Dana Point Harbor 2007-10-07 11:20:00 Dana Point Harbor
is a really nice place to spend a Sunday. There are great places to eat and shop, or just sit around and people-watch. The cool thing about Dana Point Harbor is that there are so many different little "harbor worlds" there. Shopping and restaurants at the main center of the harbor (fine dining to casual snacks. Our fav is Jon's Fish Market - great fish & chips). Then there's Doheny Beach. This is one of the very few beaches open for camping. There are firepits there (awesome!) and they hold the Doheny Blues Festival there in the May.Oh, you know what's fun? (This is mean) Go to the boat launching area and watch people "attempting" to launch their boats and jet skis. It can be hysterical at times (submerged cars, etc.) Trying to get them back out of the water is even better.Okay, back on track...Going to the opposite end of the harbor you can visit the Ocean Institute and see the tall ships. Oh, speaking of the tall ships, you really should try to make it to the Tall
My Internet Epiphany... 2007-10-06 10:43:00 I was going through several blogging sites this morning, just seeing what's out there, and it suddenly struck me how important the Internet
is. Oh, sure, there are all the obvious reasons; research, shopping, email, but one thing really struck me. How about the fact that it has virtually changed the lives of many people who would have otherwise been horridly lonely or isolated for one reason or another? I'm sure everyone has known or read of someone who doesn't blend well into their surroundings. Not blending in can be caused by many things, such as extreme shyness, physical issues, health issues, socio-economic differences, location - whatever. The Internet has now bridged the gap for these people, and given them a resource for connecting. Okay, I know you're saying that it's not really a connection, since you really don't know who's at the other end of your screen, but I disagree. As long as you surf safely (don't give out a bunch of personal info) you now have at your finger
CSUF (Cal State Fullerton) & Michelangelo 2007-10-05 12:09:00 If you're interested in great art a good place to find it is at universities.Cal StateFullerton
has a really cool display of Michelango's David, only the twist is that it is "Fallen." By "fallen," they mean literally, it fell and it broke. The pieces were donated to CSUF by Forest Lawn Memorial Park, and are now presented in such a way that you can get close up and personal. I highly recommend this, because you will certainly be amazed at the anatomical detail in this famous work of art. Just the lines of the fingers alone are amazingly accurate. I felt they could come alive at any moment, and reach out. It really gives you a new perspective and appreciation for the talent of the great Michelangelo
.Staring this closely into David's face is haunting in a way, and he seems to have an air of sadness to him. (That reminds me. Maybe a trip to Forest Lawn is in order...)It's Friday!!Keep up with me...

Huell Howser's Road Trip 2007-10-04 19:28:00 I just love that guy. I think this is partly due to the fact that he travels all over MY state and shows me cool things to photograph. The other day I caught an episode on the City of Orange, of all places. I lived there many, many moons ago (but not near the Circle) and never knew any of the details shown on "Road Trip
." I'm now planning to spend some time there soon and photograph some of the very cool areas he showed me -- er, um, everyone. While thinking about following my heart (photographically) I mentioned that I would be taking, and posting, more beach and coastal images. I've expanded this goal and have now decided to try and post an Orange County image every day. I want people everywhere to see why Orange County is such a perfect place to live. I mean, I know we have the most beautiful beaches in the world, but there are so many more diverse, and very cool, things to see here. So, stand by, and check back often for lots of Orange County images! (And, yes, especially t

Idle Ramblings 2007-10-04 01:49:00 So, today I feel like sharing some idle ramblings with you all...I went to breakfast with my friend, Rita, yesterday. It was great spending some time with her after barely seeing her for months. She's really a nice person. My husband laid down a great lead track over a rhythmn recording he got from one of his guitar-player friends.I wrote a poem! Okay, it was a dark, gloomy, tragic thing, but it was for a contest and the moodiness felt appropriate. No comments, however, so maybe it was too dark. My friend, Gayle, won tickets to Scary Disneyland and is taking me! Yay! She's trying to swap them for Knott's Scary Farm, but -fingers crossed- I'm hoping that doesn't work out.I'm going to start funneling more photographic attention on Orange County and Southern California beaches. My first love in photography is the beach, so I'm going to follow my heart.I heard from my friend, Vicki, today. She's got lots of photos on Flikr, and linked to me. I gave her my blog link. I'm
L.A. Zoo! 2007-10-03 17:41:00 I was invited to go to the L.A. Zoo
last week by my friend, and fellow co-chair of First Impressions, Ellen, and her photography class. (She's the teacher). Haven't been there in a long time, so it was fun to get out there again. We also went to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and saw THE GREAT PICTUREKeep up with me...

TTV [Vintage Style Beach Photos] 2007-09-30 00:04:00 TTV is a style of photography where you use a digital camera, but you actually shoot through a vintage viewfinder camera (I use a Duoflex from the early 1950's). I love the old look to the final product. Here are some of my beach scenes I took in Laguna Beach
a couple weeks ago...Keep up with me...

Vegas, Baby! 2007-09-29 23:43:00 Photoshop World came to Las Vegas
, and I WAS THERE! I caravaned with a couple friends of mine. Sara rode with me, and we followed Bob. It's fun to travel with friends, and we had a good, fast trip there. A little too fast, since we didn't get to stop and take pictures, but Vegas is close, so I can go again. We saw some pretty cool abandoned buildings along the way. Once there I saw another member of my First Impressions group, Mike, who had come with his wife. It's always cool to see someone you know when you're out of town. The conference was exhausting - in a good way. We got there early Wednesday and went to our first class/session/seminar from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The next few days were a continuous flow of classes by the top experts in the world.Got lots of free stuff (ooh, my fav!!) and came home exhausted and happy.Photoshop World Las Vegas was awesome!!!Keep up with me...

Long Time, No See! 2007-08-08 22:12:00 Well, it's been awhile since I last updated my blog - a bad habit I do not intend to become comfortable with.First, let me catch you up on my not-so-recent comings and goings, and then I'll fill you in on current events. In February I photographed Amber and Jeremy's wedding in L.A. It was small, but lovely, and the bride and groom looked fabulous.I was also very pleased to be asked to photograph the promotion ceremony of 1st Sgt. Brian Jackway. It was a bright, sunny day, and along with his beautiful wife and daughters, many of his friends and family were there to help celebrate his career advancement.March came along, and my friend Karen, and her husband, Paul (you remember them) had a local speaking engagement, so I was able to see her again. They are fabulous speakers, and I highly recommend her book, "If You Don't Die to Self, I May Have to Kill You" It's a riot, but has a great message, and is a must for all married couples. You can read more about her and the book on her MySp
Third Time's a Charm! 2007-02-10 14:05:00 Last night was our third, and final, reception for the first First Impressions photography exhibit, which was held at the Kornelius Schorle Gallery in Irvine. We had a very good response, and it seemed that everyone had friends, family or guests come to support them. I was especially happy to see my friends, Carol, Arleene and Sara enjoy the exhibit, and to be able to spend some time with them.Bacchus Secret Cellar Wine Shoppe & Bar in Irvine sponsored a wine tasting and appetizers, which allowed the artists to mingle and chat with the guests, without worrying about hosting details.I was very blessed this evening to have some very special guests come to our show. I thought I would fall over when I turned and saw my friend, Karen Long, whom I've been friends with since the age of three, and her husband Paul, and beautiful daughter, Katherine, standing to my side. I sent her an invitation, but did not expect to see her, since she lives a good distance away, and if you know anything abo
Two Shows Down, One to Go! 2007-02-03 11:35:00 Our shows to date have had truly great responses, and the turnout both times was wonderful. Our first show in January had hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of people, and the gallery filled quickly to maximum occupancy. The guests seemed to be really impressed with our work, and I heard from one couple, Dr. and Mrs. Teel, that "the caliber of work was exemplary" and way above their expectations. That was wonderful to hear, and seemed to be the general consensus. I'm happy about that, not only for myself, but also for all the others in our group. We all worked very hard on our series, and to know that others appreciated the quality and enjoyed their time at the gallery truly made it worthwhile. The first reception (First Impressions exhibit) was a madhouse, In a very good way, with wall-to-wall friends, family and locals. The second reception (First Fridays) had fewer people, but it was still a very good turnout, and the artists were able to spend more quality time with the guests, and ho

. Aside from having not one, but two colds during Christmas and New Year's, it was absolutely perfecto! We drove to my sister's and had our family gathering, complete with a delicious meal in a beautifully decorated setting, and wall-to-wall gifts. I have some pictures to share with you! Shows Are On! 2006-12-23 22:17:00 Class is over for this fall...almost. The actual classroom portion is finished, ending with a potluck gathering and art show at the home of one of our classmates, who very graciously opened her home to us. (BTW, her home was high, high, high up, with a breathtaking ocean view. Wow...!)This class has been an unusually fantastic learning experience. Our teacher, and fearless leader, Tom Lamb http://www.lambstudio.com, went way above and beyond, teaching us real-world skills for preparing our work in a series format, printing, matting, framing choices, publication and presentation options, and ultimately, he has made it possible for us to showcase our final work at two different galleries! Arranging for us to have a gallery show is something that we most likely would have had to work toward for a very long time. You don't just walk up to a gallery and make a reservation to show your work. There is much involved, from photographing each piece, preparing slides for submission, and prepari
Feeding My Addiction... 2006-12-23 21:02:00 Previously I mentioned that I was addicted to taking classes. It's true. While having a moment of strength and determination, I hopped on the wagon and decided to take only an online class in order to free up some more time in my life. I signed up for my online class, and was somewhat shaky in my resolve, but ultimately felt comfortable with my decision and plotted course. But then I fell off the wagon...After not signing up for the Photoshop class I had originally selected, I heard from my teacher (and pal) , Bill Agee http://www.redsilver.com/, who asked me what I was planning to do this coming semester (since I had not signed up for his class yet). I told him about my epiphany (learning too much, doing too little) and that I was planning on taking an online HTML class so I could spend more time shooting.Bill disagreed with my decision, and explained that HTML is something that I can teach myself in a few hours. I suspected this, but since I'm a school addict, I thought taking a cl Read more:Feeding
"Coastal Access" Photo Series 2006-12-13 01:57:00 I just finished my photographic series called COASTAL ACCESS.I've always lived near the ocean, and it has been a constant source of peace and replenishment to me. With this series, I'm hoping to raise awareness in my own small way that we must keep our beaches clean and unpolluted so everyone can enjoy them. A portion of this series will be shown in two different venues this coming January. More details to follow on that later. The complete series can be seen on my website: http://www.barbaragordonphotography.com, Here is an excerpt from my artist statement..."You can tell all you need to about a society from how it treats animals and beaches." - Frank Deford COASTAL ACCESS is a reminder that we are free to access our beautiful shorelines, but also that we must remain vigilant to preserve their beauty. The oceans and beaches have been a source of calming, cleansing, and replenishing since the beginning of time, and it is only with our conservancy and perseverance that future generati Read more:Access

A Beautiful Thanksgiving... 2006-11-26 15:26:00 Once again we were blessed to have a beautiful Thanksgiving
meal together as a family, compliments of my sister. She always manages to make the best food, and plenty of it, and does it with lots of love (her secret ingredient). The table was gorgeous, as usual, and although I can't prove it, it seems that she never uses the same dishes twice!I'm so thankful to have my family. With all the hustle and bustle in my life, I don't get to see them as much as I'd like, but I'm working on that. My sister said if we'd drive up once a month she'd be more than happy to make a nice meal for us so we can all spend more time together. I'm going to try and make it at least every other month (it's quite a drive). My mother has always been worried about my being a workaholic, and she said something very wise to me a long time ago; "Don't find yourself an old woman one day with no fond memories." Ever since she said that to me I've tried to take the time to live my life more fully. I keep the Read more:Beautiful
I'm Joining the [blog] Party... 2006-11-18 11:19:00 Welcome to my blog! I'm an "emerging professional" (don't you love that term??) photographer on the road to "full emergence," and invite you to join me on this adventure of mine. I'll be posting some of my photos, my thoughts on different subjects, interesting quotes, notable people, places and things I come across, and anything else I feel like sharing with you.A little about me...I've been studying Photography and Photoshop for a few years now, and just attended the Photoshop Power Tour in L.A. (which was AWESOME). I have to admit I'm somewhat [totally] addicted to taking classes; in part due to the great information I get, the fully equipped labs at my beck and call, and also because I just love the people I meet. I've gotten to know some of the coolest people at school, and while I keep in touch with some of them "on the outside," there are others I only see on campus. Hence, my "addiction" to school. That said, however, I'm opting for an online class this semester to brush Read more:Joining

Are You Right-Brain or Left-Brain? 2007-10-15 17:42:00 I took some kind of informal personality test awhile back and it really explained something for me. Why do I sometimes have a stutter when it comes to making simple decisions? Oh, the big stuff is no problem - I'm all over that, but mediocrities sometimes are a challenge. Well, mystery solved: The said personality test scored me at an even 1/2-left brain and 1/2-right brain. Balance. Sounds good? Balanced? Well, it's really a contradiction, because apparently the two sides have a "power struggle." It seems that unbalanced people, (grin) bobbing to the left or right, always use their prominent sides of the brain for problem-solving. No power struggle. No spinning in place.Ever wonder if you were right brain or left brain, and just what, exactly, are the traits of either side? Find Out HereFor me, the direction of the dancer keeps changing! Right

Today I Am Grateful... 2007-10-14 13:42:00 I always try to tell people who are having a rough patch that everything happens for a reason. I truly believe this. Even though this is very difficult to fathom while we are in the middle of a crisis, down the road, if you really open your mind, you can see how that incident was meant to be. And I'm not talking about your bad decisions, or setting yourself up for failure - YOU are responsible for these things. Own them. I'm talking about those occurrences and situations that are seemingly out of our control. For instance:The Dark Cloud: Saturday we were supposed to drive up to see my mom. I haven't seen her for awhile, and I really miss her. Well, without boring you with details, several things came up out of nowhere and the trip had to be postponed. The Silver Lining: I'm sure you heard about the horrific fiery crash that happened Saturday on the Interstate 5 in Santa Clarita? That is the exact route we would have been on. And while we would not have been in the truck Read more:Today
The Amazing Art of Phil Hansen 2007-10-13 13:37:00 "Bizarre." That's the first word that comes to mind when I think of Phil Hansen
's art. "Wow" is the second. When I first saw Phil Hansen's work and technique I was mesmerized! His artwork is amazing, but his technique is what raises him to a level that is rarely visited by us mere mortals. His tools consist of many of his body parts; hands, feet, chest, cheek, stomach, to name a few, but then in comes ink, matchsticks, teriyaki sauce, wads of paper, or his own blood, and the finished product is a real standout. His imagination is amazing, and while you may not agree with his message, the way he conveys that message through his dual-level art is brilliant. If you take a few minutes to check him out, I'm sure you'll be as amazed as I was.Phil Hansen's website: philinthecircle.comKeep up with me...

"The Real Stars" - by Ben Stein 2007-10-12 14:22:00 Okay, I'm not political, so this is not a message leaning to the right or left. I do, however, support and appreciate the sacrifice of each and every man and woman fighting our wars for us. This video clip circulated to me via the Internet this morning, and I thought it was great. Now I'm sharing. That said, let me add that I have not read this book. In fact, I just heard about it five minutes ago. I do like the fact that Ben Stein
says in the interview that he is pro-soldier, and donates all proceeds from the sale of this book to TAPS, which supports the families of our troops.Keep up with me...
