P2P Websites: Database Self-Destruct
2007-10-26 02:00:49
While reading over TorrentFreak and the whole did the Oink server database self-destruct or not, it really got me thinking on how simple it would be for these torrent website’s to protect their users! Database self-destruct. Its in-genius really, if your server connects up to another IP it auto self-destructs. Otherwise it has a set time for you to do a secret command on it or the database self-destructs. Even better if the database isn’t loaded in the correct way it self-destructs! Then the police have absolutely nothing on your website! Of course they would probably try to get you “done” for having an auto-self-destruct feature… Maybe an auto-self-destruct-database-replace [try say that five times fast..] Then again no user’s have ever gotten arrested yet as far as I can remember, but think ahead websites!

Gmail Version 2
2007-10-31 05:00:01
An interesting one via Google Blogoscoped is Gmail Version 2! Apparently there is a backend Javascript rewrite, making Gmail faster than ever! The new version also hopes to improve contact management. Here are some screenshots, as we all love inside views! Reading Email, nothing seems to have changed here! New contacts management system. Reminds me of Outlook! Another picture of the new contacts management system, you have to admit, it is looking good! Adding a picture to a contact now has the option of adding a picture straight from Picassa. Google integration at its finest! Lastly, the more actions menu seems to have a new option, “Filter Messages like these”. Overall version two is looking good, glad to see its still in Beta though! Google can only improve on it!

Learn PHP: Class Two
2007-10-30 11:07:26
Table of contents for Learn PHPLearn PHP: PrepLearn PHP: Class OneLearn PHP: Class Two Moving on to Class II after a long break! We will today cover PHP’s If Else Statements. Here is one in action: <?php if ($condition) { echo “condition is true”; } ?> Simple enough? To start with as you can see you first write the statement name, in this case “if”. Then you enclose your condition in brackets, [A condition is essentially a question you ask PHP.] then you add an opening “curly bracket”. The opening curly bracket basically defines the start of the code to execute of the condition of the statement evaluates to true. In this case we are wanting PHP to output the text “condition is true” if the condition is true. Then finally we have a closing curly bracket. In the above example the entire condition has simply been set to the variable $condition. Therefore what we are asking PHP is does the variable $condition exist, and if it doe

Google OS - [gOS]
2007-11-07 04:00:47
Is it really the Google Operating System? Nope! What the hell is it then? Well gOS is essentially what I imagine the Google Operating System would be! As you can see, the base system is exactly as you’d imagine Google Operating System to be. Lots of big easy buttons for everyone, and links to anything they own! In this screen shot you can see the Gmail icon, aswell as a list of the standard applications included! As a Linux distribution it however cannot play flash in the browser without you going through a couple of terminal commands to install a plugin. I really think this is a shame as it really would be the Google Operating System with that! Their main website is over here, and of course you can download it here via bittorrent!

Windows Live Writer 2008
2007-11-07 03:00:32
Windows Live Writer is out of beta and into “Windows Live Writer 2008“. No really amazing new features apart from easier Windows Live Spaces creation. Hopefully some interesting plugins will come out for it on the Wordpress side now! Overall I’m doing all my blogging from Windows Live Writer so I’m happy to see this, who would have known I liked blogging from a program more than the Admin Control Panel!

Wordpress Super Cache
2007-11-07 02:00:56
Donncha an Irish blogger has brought out an extensive modification of the famous WP-Cache-2 plugin called “Wordpress Super Cache”. The release article has been Dugg so I’m sure he is getting loads of testing done! You can digg it here! The plugin can be downloaded here and read about here.

2007-11-06 02:55:12
Browsing the Internet as one does I was looking for blogging events in Ireland, surprise surprise! BlogTalk will this year be held in Cork. I see Tom Raftery is Co-Chair. No Google Phone
2007-11-06 02:00:12
So we all talked about it, we speculated. Certain people were right. But it’s not happening. Via Wall Street Journal: Google Inc. announced today an ambitious alliance with 33 handset makers, wireless carriers and other technology companies to create low-cost mobile phones based on “open” technology standards. The Mountain View, Calif., Internet company said the new cellphone technology it is creating with its partners – which it calls Android – would enable faster development of innovative cellphone features. The platform includes several layers of software for phones, including an operating system, a user interface and applications. Give it ten years! Then maybe Google will turn hardware!

Learn PHP: Class Three
2007-11-09 03:00:05
Table of contents for Learn PHPLearn PHP: PrepLearn PHP: Class OneLearn PHP: Class TwoLearn PHP: Class Three Today we are going to learn all about include and require! Include and require are handy to use not only in your php applications, but in general website design for sidebar’s and what not! So.. yeah.. Moving on! Include and Require include a file within another PHP script. There are four ways of doing this: include(); include_once(); require(); require_once(); Now using them is seriously simple. Lets say you have sidebar.php with your links? All you have do do is the following: <?php include(”sidebar.php”); ?> One thing to remember is how to control directories in PHP. For instance, if my file “sidebar.php” is in a folder called includes you put in: <?php include(”includes/sidebar.php”); ?> Or to take another route of it, if my file “sidebar.php” is in the / directory and the file I want the sidebar to show on

Skype 2.0 for Linux
2007-11-09 02:00:33
Skype 2.0 for Linux is out. Video calling at last I may say! Not that I use video calling much on skype, I find it makes the call quality lower. Time to upgrade the internet line! Other than having video there has been a number of improvements made to Skype including a large amount of bug fixes and a few new options. You can read about all of them in the change log here. Of course the main thing is that it can be downloaded here! Enjoy everyone!

Who Remembers Eircell?
2007-11-08 03:00:27
Was just thinking back there to the first mobile phone I got and remembered about Eircell! Who remembers them? I remembering buying my phone in the store and actually getting to pick my phone number from a list! Deadly stuff! On the note of my first phone:   That was the one, certainly progressed haven’t we!

My Blogging Habits, Past and Present
2007-11-08 02:00:37
We all have blogging habits, some are good and some are just damn stupid or stuck from when you started off. Roughly today I will have been blogging on and off for one year. Lets have a look at a few of my past habits and my present habits! Past Habits: On the fly posting - This was actually up until pretty recently, I’d just post whenever I found something. This is possibly one of the worst habits you can get into. For instance I’d have six posts one day, one post the next day, no posts the day after and so on and so forth. Break this habit if your into it and that’s happening to you, use scheduled posting instead! Adverts Everywhere - At the start of blogging I had adverts all over the place! Ad optimization at its finest, just shove it in their face.  I have currently don’t have any adverts, but when I decide to put some up you’ll see I have learnt from this! Bad Blog Design - This is always a way to stop users from frequently coming back to y

Science Week - The Next Gadget I want to buy:
2007-11-15 08:10:01
Third day of science week! Today’s topic is, What’s the next gadget that you want to buy? This would have to be either the OpenMoko or the Qtopia Greenphone both are open source and built on a linux framework. More importantly if you get one you can develop your own appliactions for it. Since the Qtopia Greenphone is now sold out and it doesn’t look like it’s coming back anytime soon I believe I will be going with the OpenMoko once it hits Stage 2 and has Wi-fi. How I long for a phone with Wi-fi!!

Science Week: Invention of the future.
2007-11-14 04:58:48
Today’s task to write about is what invention would you want to see most in the future? For me it would have to be Free Broadband! I would love to see free DSL / Wireless [the later a more reasonable option] from companies like Google or Microsoft come into Ireland. Kilkenny are of course already thinking about it, so, hopefully it comes in and becomes nationwide!

Legal Music via Bittorent
2007-11-14 02:00:07
Music isn’t something I usually blog about, though at least 60% of my life is controlled at the moment by music. Just talking to a friend last night we got talking into the release of music via an online medium. He is in a band and is intending on releasing their next album online for free. Personally I think this is a great thing to do for any upcoming bands! Take a look at Harvey Danger and Lamount. Both bands I had never heard before, Harvey Danger has now become part of my “Favorites” playlist and I listen to it constantly, Lamount I also really enjoyed! Both have achieved major popularity and their music is now all around the world. New bands epically should consider releasing their music through an online medium, what do you have to loose? Your not going to make that much money in the first place! Ditch the record companies and start letting your music be heard all around the world, because at the end of the day that’s really what it’s about isn&rsq

Invention: The Internet
2007-11-13 17:25:36
Science week are having a great blogging competition, so thanks to being notified to Damien Mulley I figured I might aswell participate! My Favorite Invention from my childhood: The Internet The Internet was created back in 1983, seven years before I was born! Growing up I always had access to the internet and it consumed vast amounts of my time, starting with “The Computer Training Center” in Thurles, Co. Tipperary that was run by my mother. Obviously I have more than surpassed the old PITMAN qualification. The Internet has to be my favorite invention and even today it still is! One billion people use the regularly use the internet, from its origins as ARPAnet [Advanced Research Projects Agency network), a US military network it is now a worldwide communication and money making device. The first use of TCP/IP happened in 1983. The Internet is basically a worldwide, publically accessible series of interconnected computer networks! Of course where would the internet be

Pirate Bay Style
2007-12-12 05:32:36
Yesterday the Pirate Bay crew received all the legal papers over their case with the Swedish police, in typical Pirate Bay style the Pirate Bay made another little joke and bought five trees to compensate for environmental losses with the amount of paper used! You have to love these guys, they really take the piss out of anyone! Full story here.

Web 3.0?
2008-02-14 09:25:46
The website that sparked my thoughts on this is here. It’s a kinda Web 3.0 website, using this I have to admit I got hit by the immediate “this is quiet cool” thought, but after moving the Cow and trees around for a while I realised the whole thing is pointless. Which got [...]

Amazing Ubuntu Mockup
2008-02-14 09:16:27
Personally if I think if Ubuntu had some more amazing themes like this the change to linux would be quiet fast. Like just look at why people upgraded to Vista, no other reason than: "Oooh.. shiny!". But if ubuntu had this it’d be like "oooh shiny and secure". Imagine the possibilities! Then again also imagine [...]
