Notre Dame win their first, defeat UCLA 20-6
2007-10-07 00:54:43
When you’re Notre Dame , expectations are usually high.  When you’re 0-5, a bowl bid is next to impossible to obtain even if you win out the rest of the season.  The Fighting Irish, fighting through one of their worst seasons ever, won for the first time this season defeating the UCLA Bruins 20-6.  The win was their first in eight games, dating back to last season; the last time Notre Dame lost 8 straight was 1960 when they won their opener then lost 8 consecutive games. Turnovers proved to be key to the Fighting Irish victory; they knocked UCLA starting quarterback Ben Olsen out of the game with a knee injury late in the first quarter, then pressured reserve QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson into multiple miscues the rest of the game.  UCLA QB’s were intercepted 4 times. Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen put the Irish ahead 13-6 when he QB-sneaked inot the end zone with 1:53 left in the 3rd quarter.  Irish linebacker Maurice Crum made the score 20-6 when he scooped a Be

Reesing throws 3 TD’s, leads Jayhawks past Kansas State 30-24
2007-10-06 21:30:50
The Kansas Jayhawks (5-0, 1-0) on Saturday did something thta they haven’t done in the past seasons: win a football game in Manhattan, KS in their stadium, better known as the “Little Apple”.  Jayhawk quarterback Todd Reesing threw for 267 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Jayhawks slipped past the 24th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats 30-24 and upped their record to 5-0, just the 3rd time Kansas started a season 5-0 in 39 years. Kansas claimed the lead 21-14 when connected with wide receiver Desmon Briscoe for a 28-yard touchdown pass; however, the Wildcats (3-2, 1-1) pulled to within 21-17 on kicker Brooks Rossman’s 32-yard field goal in the final seconds of the 3rd quarter.  Reesing hit WR Dexton Fields with a 30-yard TD pass for a 27-24 Jayhawk lead with 6:27 remaining in the game. Shortly after Kansas took the lead, Jayhawk cornerback Kendrick Harper intercepted Wildcat QB Josh Freeman’s pass then kicker Scott Webb converted a 24-yard FG with 2:21 rem

West Virginia annihilates Syracuse, 55-14
2007-10-06 20:45:58
To atone for a dismal showing last weekend in a 21-13 to South Florida, the 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers corrected their major problem from last week (turnovers) in demolishing the home team Syracuse Orangemen 55-14.  The Mountaineers converted two deflected passes into touchdowns into touchdowns in the first half against the Orangemen (1-5, 1-1) to build a commanding 31-7 lead. Mountaineer quarterback Pat White who last week sustained a thigh bruise against South Florida, was banged up again; however, he went 12-of-15 for 148 yards and a touchdown and also had 14 carries for a team-high 89 yards and a rushing touchdown, as well.  One bit of good news for Syracuse on Saturday was that the much-aligned Orangemen defense held Mountaineer running back Steve Slaton, second in the nation with a 122.4 yards per game average, to 69 yards on 15 carries.  Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams led the Orangemen with 2 catches for 72 yards, including a 61-yard TD reception in the 3rd

Power Rankings - Volume 1, Week 6
2007-10-06 02:08:36
1. LSU Tigers (5-0), (2-0) -  This is the best team in the nation, in the best conference in the land of College Football.  LSU’s defense is simply the best and they have shown it by flexing their muscles week in and week out, as they will continue their dominance this Saturday Nite at Home in Death Valley against their rival and NCAA defending champs, Florida.  LSU has given up only four touchdowns and has held the opposition to 39 rushing yards per game!  Sure they will go up against super-rushing sophomore, standout QB Tim Tebow, and they will have to contain the blazing fast, all-purpose, versatile threat of WR Percy Harvin, but in this showdown I expect LSU to match the Gators in every aspect of the game, especially on the defensive side of the ball, where it will be a true battle between the best vs. the best and strength on strength.  DT Glenn Dorsey (Top Senior on Mel Kiper Jr’s Big Board), LB Ali Highsmith, and S Craig Steltz will be ready for the tall task a

Ohio State makes its way up to #1 ranking: 3 SEC Teams in the Top 8
2007-10-14 14:35:20
Major Shake-Up: It was the first time in 11 years the # 1 and 2 teams in the AP poll lost on the same day. Scarlet and Gray: The Buckeyes received 50 of a possible 65 first-place votes, and were not the only team to advance. South Florida, which had never been ranked before this season, moved up three spots to No. 2, jumping over No. 3 Boston College. The Bulls received 11 first-place votes after a 64-12 victory over Central Florida. BC’s unimpressive 27-14 victory over Notre Dame helped get the Eagles one first-place vote. No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 5 LSU each received one first-place vote, as did No. 12 Arizona State . Making History in the Record Books: The last time six teams received first-place votes after the first month of the season was Nov. 25, 1990. A day after the top two teams in the AP Top 25 lost, the Buckeyes jumped two spots Sunday in the media poll and became the third school this season to hold the No. 1 ranking. “We’ve improved each week but we under

LSU’s Playcalling their greatest strength and weakness in their 3OT loss to Wildcats
2007-10-14 00:01:34
The LSU Tigers (6-1), (3-1) had two double digit leads of 17-7 and 27-14 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but could not hold on for a victory at Lexington against a rallying Andre’ Woodson-led squad, that came off a tough loss (38-23) at the hands of Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks (21-15 win at North Carolina).  Kentucky (6-1), (2-1), a team known for pulling out impressive comebacks (Louisville, Arkansas), scored the final 13 points in regulation to force an overtime, after Kicker Colt David was wide left on a potential 57-yard game-winning FG.   In the first overtime, UK benefited from a roughing of the passer call en route to a 1-yard TD run from Freshman RB Derrick Locke, a replacement for their injured starting RB Rafael Little.  LSU  quickly answered back, with a fake FB, Halfback toss to back-up RB Richard Murphy, one of many talented backs that the Bayou Bengals have stacked in their program at the arsenal of Head Coach Les Miles, who has trouble ch

Grothe scores 4 TD’s as #5 South Florida throttles UCF 64-12
2007-10-13 19:01:17
South Florida once again this week is showing why they are contenders for the national title chase; Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more and defensive end George Selvie, the nation’s sack leader, led a swarming Bulls defense that held the nation’s leading rusher, Central Florida running back Kevin Smith, to 56 yards on 18 carries as the University of South Florida routed University of Central Florida 64-12. USF’s defense, for the 14th consecutive game, held an opposing rusher to less than 100 yards a game.  Selvie recorded a sack, giving him 11 1/2 for the season, and Grothe went 15-for-28 for 212 yards and 2 passing touchdowns; he also carried the ball 16 times for 101 yards and 2 rushing TD’s.  UCF’s main culprit was turning the ball over as they committed 3 turnovers in the first quarter alone.  USF improved to 6-0 (1-0, Big East) while UCF dropped to 3-3 (1-1 Conference USA East).  South Florida next travels

1. (1) LSU Tigers (6-0), (3-0) @ Kentucky - If you missed last Saturday Nite’s SEC nail biter, down to the wire finish in Baton Rouge, you missed the College Football game of the year. LSU was down and out and couldn’t figure out Tebow and the Gators, trailing 24-14 going into the 4th quarter, then comes the defense with some crucial, forced turnovers to swing the momentum, then insert the power RB Jacob Hester to help cap the comeback, coming through with a big fourth down conversion along with the game-winning score following after, and all the national title implications are at steak with a loud, full-capacity crowd at Death Valley, adding more to the intrigue, folks, you had it all in this once in a lifetime, exciting game that gave you the thrills and the chills, depending on which team you were rooting for. The senior from Shreveport was a bull and put forth a tremendous effort that will go down in history, as the LSU Tigers showed lots of guts, perseverance, heart,

NCAA Preview, Arizona vs. (10) USC
2007-10-10 09:24:44
It was not that long ago when the University of Southern California was on top of the food chain.  But a lackluster victory and an upset loss to Stanford rocked the Trojans’ world.  They hope to rebound from that setback when they host the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday. USC (4-1, 2-1 Pac-10) was a 41-point favorite against Stanford last Saturday but allowed the Cardinal to score 17 points in the fourth-quarter en route to a 24-23 loss.  The Trojans defeated the Wildcats 20-3 last season; however, it is possible that the Trojans may start sophomore Mark Sanchez at quarterback if John David Booty cannot start.  Booty passed for 364 yards against Stanford, but also broke a bone in his middle finger of his throwing hand and threw 4 interceptions after that.  The Trojans hope to have starting running back Stafon Johnson (378 yards, 4 TD’s in 4 games) for this contest after missing the Stanford game.  USC is allowing a league-low 269 yards per game goping into this Satu

Nittany Lions Facing off-the-field Problems
2007-10-10 08:48:13
It is already common knowledge that back in April 2007, some Penn State football players were involved in a fight and as a result, team head coach Joe Paterno forced the entire football team to pick up garbage the day after home games at Beaver Stadium.  Now the problem worsens; less than a week after Nittany Lion running back Austin Scott was suspended for violating a team rule, Paterno said on Tuesday that he was looking into the possibility that some players were involved in yet another fight this past weekend. When asked about the possible altercation, Paterno told Genaro C. Armas of the Associated Press, “I’ve been alerted there might have been a couple football players involved in a fight.  To what extent, to what degree, what happened, I’m not quite sure yet.”  Tyrone Parham, Penn State assistant police director, declined to comment about whether any players were under investigation; however, he added, “We can’t confirm anyone’s affil

Knights don’t take “bull” in 30-27 triumph: Rutgers protects its house, knocking off USF from the unbeatens
2007-10-20 00:50:20
Warning - UPSET Alert:  UPSET City continued a trend and was front and center once again in Piscataway, New Jersey, as Rutgers outlasted South Florida 30-27 in a tight battle.  WR Tiquan Underwood (5 catches, 114 yards, for 2 TD’s) showed why he may be the Rutgers’ MVP this season and their most overlooked star, as he made big plays when it counted and when the Scarlet Knights needed it the most, coming through in the clutch when the game was on the line in critical situations. The surprisingly 2nd ranked South Florida team, a squad who came out of nowhere, making it to the top of the football world when nobody thought they could reach a high pinnacle, were beaten by a team that’s getting good at taking out national title contenders (#3 Louisville - 2006). Third-string quarterback Andrew DePaola threw a 15-yard touchdown pass off a fake field goal to give the Scarlet Knights the lead in the third quarter and Rutgers also used a fake punt to set up an early field

Preview: South Florida Bulls @ Rutgers Scarlet Knights
2007-10-17 23:29:15
Before the Bulls can start making reservations for the Sugar Bowl in Louisiana, it will have to convincingly pass its first true Big East road test, when it visits Rutgers Thursday night, if they want to impress me and show themselves to the entire Nation as an elite team. With LSU and California - the top two teams just last week - losing last weekend, the No. 2 USF program (6-0, 1-0) will step onto the field with the highest ranking in the school’s brief history after a 64-12 home shalacking of Central Florida on Saturday. They climbed three spots in this week’s poll. The Bulls, in their 11th football season, are also second to Ohio State in the newly issued BCS standings. “I get distracted like everybody else, but I try to keep them to a minimum,” South Florida coach Jim Leavitt said. “We’ve only played one game in the Big East, and our goal from the beginning was the Big East championship. And I want to tell you something, it’s going to be

Power Rankings - Vol. 3, Week 8
2007-10-17 00:30:49
1. (2) Ohio State Buckeyes (7-0), (3-0) vs. Michigan St. - Ohio State officially has the best defense in the nation and their offensive production seems to get better week by week. This week against the Spartans (last time OSU was ranked #1 at home vs. MSU, they lost to Burress and Co.) at the ‘Shoe, the run defense will be tested big-time, as they try to stop the dynamite tandem of Ringer (lightning - at 200 pounds) and Caulcrick (thunder - at 255 pounds). The Buckeyes pass defense has been remarkable so far and it has been their best attribute/strength, with Donald Washington and Malcom Jenkins leading the way as lockdown corners in the secondary for the Scarlet & Gray. The knock I have on OSU is their health at RB with Chris Wells, though Freshman Sensation Brandon Saine is doing a fantastic job at making big plays, not just rushing, but receiving the ball also. Another thing to keep your eye in the next couple of weeks will be the play of QB Todd Beockman and how we

  1. (4) LSU Tigers (7-1), (4-1) @ ’Bama (Nov. 3) - LSU’s strength of schedule, clutch offense, and strong defense makes them the #1 pick for my Power Rankings  in Week 9.  LSU won a last-second play at home against their SEC rival Auburn Tigers on a 22-yard TD reception by Demetrius Byrd from the scrutinized, criticized, and often bashed QB Matt Flynn.  Maybe LSU has found their offense with Flynn improving, Early Doucet coming back, and Byrd stepping his play up.  LSU knows how to win the big game and did close out a victory in a great finish without All-American DT Glenn Dorsey.  This looks like a team on a mission and of destiny, they don’t win games as convincgly as some want them to, but can you blame them?  The SEC is the best conference in all of College Football and this is the best team in the SEC, so I’ll go with LSU because they are more balanced then my #2 ranked squad.  LSU @ Alabama will be a primetime, premiere game next week and I h

Thursday Nite Showdown - Most at Stake - Must See TV: #2 Boston College @ #8 Virginia Tech - You gotta like the Hokies at home in Blacksburg because the Thursday Nite crowd will be on their feet boosting Virginia Tech and they will give them a big advantage and benefit the home team in this crucial ACC game that will determine who is on top in the Atlantic Coastal Conference at the end of this one, also who will stay in the Top 5, (BC) or who will move up into the Top 5 (VT), this game has it all. This week’s match-up has the most at stake of any of the games this weekend and it will be low-scoring - the way the Hokies like it. So far this season these games on Thursday Nite have gone to the home team (ex. SC, Rutgers, Miami, and WF). Defense and Special Teams will determine the winner and those are V-Tech’s greatest strengths and assets. Matt Ryan’s Heisman hopes will fall and come to end tomorrow nite in Blacksburg to the hands of a savvy, hungry, and aggre

LSU and Oregon each advance 2 spots: Florida, USC both move up to #9, as Rankings look more stable

Another #2 arises: Will it be the 4th in as many weeks to fall? The Boston College Eagles, who were off this week, get ready to face the Virginia Tech Hokies (#8) in what will likely be a Thursday Nite showdown (Oct. 25), featuring the two top, premiere ACC teams going head-to-head in what should determine who will be in the Top 5 in next week’s polls. BC will be travelling down south to Blacksburg with a different ranking as the new #2 in the Top 25, a ranking that’s been more of a problem place for teams than a high spot where you’d like to be, as recently three teams have been upset in succession at #2: South Florida (Rutgers), Cal (Oregon St.), and USC (Stanford). - Memo to Matt Ryan and the crew: You better watch your step closely this week at V.T. P.S. Don’t forget about the Hokies extremely “special” Special Teams Unit. 1st Place Votes don’t define, nor determine much in on-the-field play: Ohio State is still #1 (Show me More!),

Sources: Spurier Set to Make Move to Louisiana State
2007-11-29 13:08:45
My sources have found that Steve Spurier, current head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, will be moving to Louisiana to take the head coaching job at Louisiana State University after Les Miles leaves that position. Les Miles was given permission by the Tigers to speak with Michigan this week about their vacant head coaching position after rumors have been circulating that he will be heading their way. LSU, currently ranked 7 in the BCS polls with a 10-2 record, has flourished under Les Miles, but a head coaching change is in line. Les Miles could be out of LSU soon after the SEC Title Game against the Tennessee Volunteers, scheduled this Saturday at 4 pm, and on his way to Ann Arbour to begin working with the Wolverines. Spurrier has a coaching resume and style that could perfectly fit and spur itself into the Tigers’ fast and athletic offense. For his on the field duties, he’s a member of the College Hall of Fame, a two-time All-American, and he’s a Heisman Trophy Win

1st Underclassman to Win Heisman: Florida QB Tebow takes home the Award
2007-12-08 23:47:34
Their was history in the making Saturday Nite in the Big Apple with the first underclassman ever to lift up the bronze, as it was made possible with Sophomore lefty from the “Chomping” University of Florida - QB Tim Tebow. The Gator took home the most prestigious award in College Football, as he finished ahead of standout Razorback RB Darren McFadden (Arkansas, Jr.) in a close race, while QB’s Colt Brennan (Hawaii) and Chase Daniel (Mizzou) were distant third and fourth place vote getters. Tebow set numerous records, even breaking good ‘ole Florida legend Emmith Smith’s mark for the most rushing TD’s in the South Eastern Conference (SEC). Along with that accolade, Tebow now holds the record for most rushing scores by a QB in Division I and the most combined TD’s in a season (51). He set high standards and started a new, exciting trend in a year that featured the spread offense more and more, being occupied by mobile, nifty QB’s under t

Buckeyes Suspend Two Players For Title Game

Already facing the tough task of playing LSU in the Louisiana Superdome for the national title, Ohio State’s challenge just got a little tougher. The “Columbus Dispatch” reports the top-ranked Buckeyes have suspended starting cornerback Donald Washington and reserve defensive back Eugene Clifford for the BCS National Championship Game due to a violation of team rules. The report indicated there were no details of the issue other than it is not a legal issue. Washington, who is a sophomore, has started every game this season and was twice named the team’s defensive player of the week.
