Art: The Real Deal Burger Cake
2007-10-05 01:37:00
Next level! Thats not shaped like a hamburger? Nope. But, there is burger within. That there is a bonifed "Meat Cake" from Black Widow Bakery. He went on to describe his ultimate wedding cake. "I hate that wedding cakes are all girly. There should be like a groom cake to go with the traditional wedding cake. A guy's cake. Like..made out of meat."That thing is filled with ground beef, layered with Worcestershire and ketchup, covered in mashed potatos for frosting, then decorated with a drawing of a T-Bone.I've never drawn a T-bone steak before. It didn't come out too bad, though there is a definite uterusy quality to it.

More like the culinary arts. Hamburger cakes are actually popular. Just check out a Google image search and you'll see. Let us know if you come across any in the Portland area already. This one is almost too perfect. It actually just might be a real hamburger disguised as a cake!Mark Allen found this thing out in the wild:At our giganternormousmegacropolisupermarket out here in “the hills,” Jim and I recently ran across a stellar display in the bakery department; tables covered with about 50 identical and freshly baked “hamburger cakes.” Each was sealed in its own clear plastic cake cover, and they were on sale for $6 a popPhotos by Bunch of Pants, Wistine, Geek2Nurse with CC license.

Hamburgers VS Halloween Costumes

Mike's Drive-In
2007-10-05 01:20:00
CondimentSpreader is still out there burgering and eating foreign objects.Just south of Tacoma St. in Sellwood is Mike's Drive In. Another old-school joint, but no longer delivering curbside on skates. Extensive menu with no less than 12 burger jump off points. I had the mushroom with swiss. Have to say it started out as one of the better burgers I've tasted, although somewhat suffering from the 'soggy bun' syndrome, which I can work around. At some point I started wondering about a mushroom that I was having trouble chewing down. Turned out to be a rather large chunk of thick plastic. (see pic)I really want to like the place, but when I informed the counterperson of my woe, she sorta shrugged it off and said, "oh sweetie, that's probably just from when they take the patties outta the pan....". Inexpensive and tasty, but still...Mike's Drive-In3045 SE Harrison St.Milwaukie, OR 97222(503)654-0131

PRESS RELEASE: Hollywood Burger Battle and Bribes
2007-10-03 23:37:00
An open letter (is that a press release?) to restaurants participating in the Hollywood Burger Battle from the Portland Hamburglers:ATTENTION HOLLYWOOD BURGER RESTAURANTSAsk yourself. Do I want my restaurant to win the burger battle? If the answer is yes then you need to get in touch. This is your chance to win the Hollywood Burger Battle. Portland Hamburglers will not be submitting any votes unless bribed.Bribes can take many forms:- Hamburgers (nice....kind of leaning towards this place)- Beer with Hamburger (thanks, I was thirsty.......I really like this place)- Beer/Hamburger/burger kitchen photos (darn, I didn't really like it, ...but I have to vote for it now).Cash is always nice too.Be warned though. Some will mope about over their in-depth two sentence review while digesting your brown biscuit (don't worry, nobody really cares that they didn't get a third glass of water or that the music is too loud, seriously, we are not that spoiled). You can even keep the prize. Yep,

Tonallis Burgers
2007-10-03 21:57:00
AmericanCheese is quickly becoming one of the more daring Portland Hamburglers out there. I don't think this place can decide if it wants to be a burger, burrito, sandwich, or breakfast joint. And it looks oddly like an Mexican A&W on the inside.I think the old adage goes, if you try to do too many things, you probably can't do one thing well. Anyway, got the bacon cheeseburger. Not bad, but not great. Yellow mustard but no ketchup on the burger? Chopped romaine lettuce? Weird.Oh, and they forgot my bacon... and they cooked it right up and brought it out to me in a hotdog wrapper. Best bacon I've ever had. Good fries, too.Tonallis Burgers 438 NE KillingsworthPortland, OR 97211(503)284-6491

The Semaphore
2007-10-03 13:48:00
CondimentSpreader gets offered to have hashbrowns and gravy on the burger....so close to finding the breakfast burger. You've probably passed by The Semaphore and not noticed it. It sits right in the parking lot of a tiny strip mall in industrial SE, but seems to have been there forever. Another "head straight for the lounge" stops. Good, straightforward burger. No nonsense. Really Cold Pabst. And they'll put an egg, bacon, sausauge, ham, hashbrowns and gravy on top of it too. I didn't step to it.Semaphore1639 SE Holgate Blvd.Portland, OR 97202(503)238-1244

Burger art action. Well, not directly, but with a name like "Hamburger Eyes" you have to give them some love. Gladstone Pub

CondimentSpreader is back on the burger trail and burgering pretty hard. Lots more from him soon.A new-ish tavern on SE Gladstone that serves craft brews. They don't open until 3pm but seem to have a much better menu than most taverns. I'd been hearing about this burger for months. Probably five different burger choices here. I went for the Jalapeno burger with fresh peppers and pepper jack. This thing was huge and can be cooked to temperature. Probably more for the "I want a good meal" crowd, and not for the grease mongers.Gladstone Pub3737 SE Gladstone St.Portland, OR 97202(503)775-3502

Shanghai Tunnel
2007-10-01 21:23:00
Vegiburger alert (vegan also available) from Portland Hamburglers "SpecialSauce" and "Snacks". Looks like the empire is re-expanding as well."SpecialSauce" and "Snacks" headed to the Shanghai Tunnel for happy hour burgers. The B.O.M.B. is their homemade black bean burger (vegan upon request). Comes with lettuce tomato and red onions. Add cheese for a buck. Comes with fries. A steal at $4 at happy hour. $6 normal. Add a Pabst for $1. Beer and a burger for $5. "Snacks" was a little saddened by the lack of plain mustard (just dijon) but is happy with any food that comes with a weapon. We didn't sample them but they also have the B.A.M.F. Meat burger. $6 at happy hour and $8 regular price.Bonus Pinball!Shanghai Tunnel211 SW Ankeny St.Portland, OR 97204(503)220-4001

News: Mark Lindsay's Rock N' Roll Cafe / Yaw's UPDATED
2007-09-30 21:48:00
Looks like Mark Lindsay 's Rock N' Roll Cafe has a bit of a problem marketing their burgers as "Yaw's" burgers. The Oregonian had this report:Stephen Yaw and his daughter, Heidi Galusha, filed a federal lawsuit today accusing the new restaurant owners of capitalizing on the family name without permission. We will be going to this establishment soon, and at the same time going across the street to the Hollywood Burger Bar for a little burger-battle action.UPDATE: The Portland Tribune gives this a little attention as well: ...and “building procedures” — which, as he explains, is “the order in which each ingredient is added” to make a true Yaw’s Top Notch Burger...Hmmm...luttuce on the top or bottom? Tough one, but then again you are reading news about hamburgers.

Le Pigeon
2007-09-28 17:48:00
Portland Hamburglers "Burgermeister" and "Hamburgler" enter the madness that seems to be the name-drop of the Portland "foodies" scene. We are not here for that though, we are here for the burgering.Seems like a lot of the great burgers in town share something in common with the Le Pigeon burger: Strawberry Mountain Natural Beef. The Slow Bar and Wildwood use it, maybe more should as well.Burger is excellent. It's nice that it is only $9.00 with potatos ($11.00 with a salad) and makes you think about how much of a jump in quality from your run-of-the-mill diner burger that is the same price with a tip. It's $0.05 more then many places around town that specialize in burger, but 10 times more delicious. [ Trying really hard not to write a "review", but it was really good. ]That dessert you see there is nuts. It's hot sizzling bacon on ice cream and cornbread with syrup. No pickle, but they get one anyways.Honorary Bonus Pickle!Le Pigeon738 E. Burnside St.Portland, OR 97214(50

So, it's in a strip-mall, but this was a lot better then expected. They actually managed to pull off having a full BBQ set-up (something I think would be hard to do in a strip mall...go figure). "Portland Hamburgler "The Human Cy-burger" had the BLTG (pepper bacon, gaucamole, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, and chilpolte mayo) for $8.95 with fries."Hamburgler" went with the sliders plate. Now this isn't burger sliders....uh oh...but three of those "other meats": pulled pork, chicken, and a beef brisket. Taps out at $6.95I'm actually wanting to check out the "breakfast sliders". Same as the sliders, but with scrambled eggs. So close to finding a breakfast burger you can taste it.What's nuts is that they open at 7am. Whoh! BBQ at 7am is pushing the envelope.Boomer 's Burgers & Ribs1335 N. Hayden Island Dr.Portland, OR 97217(503)517-2041(Its the Jantzen Beach I-5 exit)

Nob Hill Bar & Grill

Portland Hamburgler "AmericanCheese" takes a trip to the NW and keeps us in the know.Ventured to NW 23rd for some reason. Oh yeah, it's because this place has a damn good burger. Seriously. If you've never been and don't go within the next week, you don't really like burgers. First burger pic is of the "Biddy Burger". 1/3 pound patty, bacon, and a fried egg. Second is of the monster "Nobby Burger". Two patties and bacon on an oversized bun. I was full a little over half way through, but someone remarked that they wouldn't be able to take the burger blog seriously if I didn't finish it. I did, and I'm still paying for it. But in a sweet, glorious, I'm about to puke kind of way. It was well worth it. Get up to 23rd, buy some fancy jeans, and go to Nob Hill.Nob Hill Bar & Grill 937 NW 23rd AvePortland, OR 97210 (503) 274-9616Daily 8:00am- 2:30am

This place was a crowd favorite. Portland Hamburglers "HoldEverything", "SpecialSauce", "Hamburgler", and "Bun-dita" (your favorite pet food shop proprieter of Meat for Cats & Dogs) travel North to sample these brown biscuits.Large natural ground beef, grilled out on the patio for viewing pleasure with the usual suspects and chips. It was nice to have a condiments bar as well. There was some talk of something called a "Hamwallet". Have to figure it out next time.Beer Advocate seems to like the beer there as well.Bonus Pickle!Amnesia Brewing 832 N. Beech St.Portland, OR 97227(503)281-7708

Johnny B's

Established Portland diner that is more of a breakfast joint, but they have burgers on the menu so Portland Hamburglers "Pickles & Ammo" and "Hamburgler" were there. A theory about covering the chair legs with tennis balls provides optimum comfort while sitting (just don't move the tables). Don't get us wrong. They are some of the nicest folks in town, and it's nice to see blue-collar hold outs in this soon to be re-developed area (please...oh please don't call it the "Diamond District")."Pickles & Ammo" had this to say:It is the nature of a Chili-Burger to be smothered in chili...just a little over-done...but I wouldn't cast it in a disparaging light. It's a diner, so "fill-er-up" is what this is about and the "Johnny B's Hunger Cheese San" (not pictured) at $10.95 would put you in that one-meal-a-day diet. 1/2 pounder, on grilled sourdough, fried egg, grilled ham, bacon, and the usual suspects.Cheeseburger (pictured with American Swiss) starts at $6.50. Burger Art: Andy Warhol
2007-09-24 00:28:00
I dunno. It's Andy Warhol eating a hamburger. You can imagine some folks sitting around on the floor watching this quietly, then exclaiming how "genius" it is. Ugh!I know. I know. A lack of an "art" education (Rap Snacks tell us to "Stay In Skool") doesn't let some folks see some kind of statement being made about pop culture because he is eating at Burger King. Sorry. That Ray Johnson story in How to Draw a Bunny about his friend shooting a stack of the Marylin Monroe prints in the head is pretty good though.

Portland Hamburglers "RarePattie", "Plain N' Dry", and "Hamburgler" continue the quest for sliders at Plan B (formerly ACME). Portland Hamburgler Khris Soden aka "I can't think of a good hamburger alias" (get it together already!) keeps showing us why Americans basically run the burger world. Are we missing out on some secret, and stuck in European tourist burgerland? What gives? As a representative of Mostlandia I would think of better accommodations, but no. Check out Mostlandia's thing at PICA last year. Anyhow. The diplomat has this report:This "hamburger"came from a snack shop called "Lucky Hills". Snack shops are one step up from automats, but are still lower than eetcafes, which are of less quality than restaurants. This is a broodje hamburger kaas - a long way of saying cheeseburger. Anyway, I couldn't really get a shot of the pattie itself, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The stuff on top of the burger is chopped onions (you get these unless you ask not to have them - I like onions, so that works out), and a more than generous squirt of mayonnaise, and another big squirt of barbecue s

Oaks Bottom Public House
2007-10-17 00:59:00
Apparently you can't stop CondimentSpreader from eating all the hamburgers in Sellwood.Right at the intersection of Milwaukie Ave. and Bybee in Sellwood, you'll find the Oaks Bottom Public House . Not really a pub, but more of a grill with a ton of local beers. Their menu offers six burger options,(basic, with cheese, bacon) and then a few gourmet twists. Having had tried their Jalapeno burger previously, and being pretty happy with it, this time around i stepped to the 1/2 pound chevre burg. I wasn't given the option of how I wanted it cooked, and I would have enjoyed it a bit rarer, but the sheer amount of amazing chevre cheese piled high really negated any other areas I could find fault. It was a pretty damn fine sando. Recommended. Also of note was the option to accompany any burger with what I found to be the best tots i've tasted in a long time. PS: Try some of the Ninkasi brews from eugene.Oaks Bottom Public House1621 SE BybeePortland, OR 97202(503)459-4988

2007-10-15 13:00:00
This just goes to show that burgers can bring everyone together (and where is the Portland metal/burger scene these days anyhow?)Last weekend in Baltimore at the Lo-Fi Social Club there was a 2 day art show of tattoo artists, comic book illustrators, photographers, painters, and assorted other media, all coming together for some Black Metal [Wikipedia link] theme action known as Black Metal Fast Food Fight! aka BMFFF!. Oh, and of course about 40 bands, and a wrestler named "The Hamburglaress". The City Paper (Baltimores weekly) had this to say:...What began as a quirky idea of having black-metal clad wrestlers tumble through Happy Meals has become a focal point for a discussion of ugly American excess......Fast food's undeniable grotesqueness and black metal's ghoulishness give new absurd qualities to terror....Photos from Joshsisk (all rights reserved), RoxyToxic (all rights reserved), Portrait of Dave Thomas by Alex Fine (all rights reserved), Black Metal Wendy by Defekto (all ri
