McMenamin's St. Johns Pub
2008-02-29 11:45:00
PattyDaddy and HambahgaStakee take dinner at the Dome:Fresh local ingredients and consistency in presentation are the hallmark of McMenamin's establishments. Well, that and a lot of microbrew varieties. The St. Johns Pub offers a nice balcony with wrought iron railing, overstuffed chairs, a traditional bar, outdoor seating, and a dome shaped movie theater. Nice place to hole up on a winter evening.Featuring 1/3 lb. patties of Country Natural Beef, both burgers came with Tillamook cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, and secret sauce. They're served on flour-dusted kaiser rolls and come with your choice of fries, soup, or salad. My photographer friend Erio (aka HambahgaStakee) had the Cheeseburger with fries for $6.30 (top). I hit the Wilbur's Jumbo Deluxe ($7.70 with bac

UPDATE: 2/28/08BurgerMeister and the Hamburgler:BurgerMeister's thing is Gardenburgers with bacon (there is a theory being worked on about this). The Goodfoot has one of the better bar burgers in town. Fresh fixin's, solid Angus beef, and a quality price of $5.50 (fries are an extra $1.00, and extra toppings are $0.50 a pop). Them there homemade deep fried cheese mixed with jalapeno sticks will put your colon into a delicious hibernation as well.ORIGINAL POST: 8/27/07Hamburgler:This is definitely one of the finer bar burgers in town. In fact I will be back just to get another one (the garganzola and bacon has been highly recommended). I went with the cheeseburger. Perfect. The bun was buttered and placed on the grill top, the condiments were all fresh, the cheese was cheddar, and the

Tahiti: Brasserie Du Pacifique
2008-02-26 20:23:00
Hamburgler gets a report from the most remote burger to date:I'm going to para-phrase the notes passed along to me.Not technically Tahiti proper, but the island of Moorea right next door (a bit bigger then Bora Bora). The burger there costs 1500 Pacific Franc's (about $18.50 US Dollars). Most of the food there was ok, and generally not that great. Sure its easy to find a $18.50 burger (with American cheese) in the states, but probably not with the surroundings. That last thing there is a fish burger with American cheese (just thinking that cheese probably doesn't hold up to well in a tropical environment). Hamburgler and VeggiePatty started a trip to Las Vegas properly:The Portland Airport probably has some of the best airport food in the country. Sure beats the stuff you find at others like heat lamp Round Table pizza, and weird "International" wraps. Overall this burger wasn't so bad. It was around $9.00 for the Bacon Cheeseburger and of course it came on a "Kaiser" roll. Gustav's Portland International Airport

Here is a clip from Hamburger America about Bobcat Bite in Sante Fe, NM.Next up is the book Hamburger America that is set for release in April and available here:...features 100 of the best roadside stands, nostalgic diners, mom n pop establishments, and college town favorites - and tells exactly where to find them. Virginia Cafe

UPDATE: 2/24/07RareMediumRare (aka Dieselboi) checks in for the last days at the "old" location:As many of you know, the Virginia Cafe will be closing its longtime location and moving two blocks west. With that move comes an end to an era. Before the move, I had to venture in for a final burger. I'm no regular, but had enjoyed the food the Virginia had to offer in the past. When I saw the menu, my eyes immediately landed on the burger that for some would be referred to as the "end all be all" burger of a lifetime. Half pound burger with ham, bacon, an egg and all the assorted fixin's along with fries! Yep, the only thing missing was the kitchen sink. When it arrived, I dove in. I could barely get my mouth around the thing for the first bite, but managed and made that burger my bitc

RarePattie and the Hamburgler find some happy-hour treats: Does the name of this place make you giggle too? Montezuma, Tarzan, Man-zany-crazy, Manzanita.....whatever, we are low-brow. Same burger different decor, but this one has got some of those tiny burgers. Happy hour here (3:30/6:30 and 9:00/close Monday/Saturday) has some deals after the $2.50 drink requirement.1/4 pounder (bit of a stretch) is $2.95 with fries, and the sliders go for $1.50 a pop. Got some greens for $1.95 Caesar as well. 1203 NW Glisan St.Portland, OR 97209(503)248-1690

AmericanCheese was on some kind of Pee Wee's Big Adventure sabbatical (that "Just Eat It" sign in the window is magic):Grumps....It's in Granbury, TX. If you don't know where Granbury is, go to a map, find Fort Worth, and go SW. It has a lake. Apparently very scenic.Anyway, burger. It's a Jr. Bacon cheeseburger in fact.. I know, that's the "jr". It's a really good burger. Bacon, very crisp, just the way we like it. $4.95 gets you the burger, fries, and roasted peanuts in the shell while you wait?Wow, that's a deal. They even serve "Frito" pie and Blue Bell Ice Cream. Mark Lindsay's Rock & Roll Cafe
2008-02-20 11:00:00
Hamburgler:Themed restaurants always leave me salty (unless its that magical micro-refined french fry salt). They have had quite the ups and downs. Got some media hype about he return of Yaw's Top Notch Burger (think it was behind where the Fred Meyer's was across the street), but then the family that held the rights to the name gave them the duck sick. The burger was alright. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special either. More like a $4.00 burger that costs about $8.00, so you feel chumped, unless sitting around rock memorabilia makes you feel better about it . Classic diner style burger. They also have half pounders. What really turned everything sour though was the ranch sauce with the onion rings. Nasty stuff there. Mark Lindsay 's Rock & Roll Cafe4160 NE Sandy Blvd.Portl

Looks like some new burglers "CrumbBandit" and "QuesoGrande" got the Deutsch-bag meal deal:Good News; The server sold us the requested regular cheeseburger (minus the Bourbon-Bock sauce) for the daily special price of 5 bucks. Otherwise the "cheeseburger" would have been $7.95. And, a pint of IPA was 2 bucks. That's a good deal. The bun was toasted perfectly and provided a nice textural contrast.Bad News: The half pound burger cannot be served other than a tasteless, dry and grey medium well. Unless you would dare go well done. It reminded us of a burger from Carl's Jr. except that the fast food place remembers to season the beef (at least it comes that way frozen from the processor). No fries available, only a green salad or a very poorly prepared potato salad that was dressed with

Sir Burgers-A-Lot (from PDX Pipeline) beefs up:Burger Thoughts: It's a half-pounder with all the usual fixins and it comes with a sharp knife in it. Also, they give you the A-1 action since they know this burger is really steak on a bun. Go medium on that slab of goodness as well. Apparently, you can get it without bacon and cheese, but that's un-'Merican.Bonus Pickle!Belmont Inn3357 SE Belmont St.Portland, OR 97214(503)232-1998

Nevada: Fatburger (Las Vegas)
2008-03-13 14:30:00
Looks like a burgler bonanza. PicklesNAmmo, Burgermeister, VeggiePatty, and the Hamburgler splurge:Fatburger is owned by Portland based Fog Cutter Capital Group Inc. (at least its headquarters) and has a couple celebrity franchisee's like Queen Latifah and Montel Williams, but still not one in Portland to date. They have 1/2 pounders, 1/3 pounders, baby burgers, fat fries, skinny fries, and homemade onion-rings, real milkshakes, and a salad wedge. Of course you top it with bacon, egg, chili, and cheese as well. Make no mistake, this is fast food, but they do it a bit better. No complaints here.Fatburger3763 Las Vegas Blvd S. #ALas Vegas , NV 89109(702)740-8001

Hamburgler and Pickles&Ammo sneak away from work with one of them kids from North Portland's classy drinkin' spot the Florida Room (did you know one just opened in Miami Beach as well?) to put down some quickies:Normally shy away from the fast food, but vacation diets permit such extravagance (and everyone telling us we had to go there) and the mythical lore of the lords message drawing us in (there are Christian messages on some of the packaging apparently). All were pleased with this. Pickles&Ammo was befuddled since he has never eaten anything but the Double Double Animal style that there were single patty burgers at the table. The production line in this place is awe inspiring. It puts JIT inventory babble and homemade GTD moleskines to shame all with only one register. As far as

Burger Skills: Corned Beef Burger
2008-03-15 16:49:00
Just in time for St. Patty's Day. The genius' of Idea's In Food made the Corned Beef Burger :To make this beauty we diced and shredded some leftover corned beef (what can I say, we couldn't wait until Monday). We folded the cooked meat into some lean ground beef with a bit of cold, grated butter, a pinch of salt and a touch of cayenne pepper. We seared the burgers in a hot, dry pan allowing them to cook in their own rendered fats. The outsides crisped beautifully and the smell was intoxicating. While the burgers were resting we fried English muffins in the drippings and used them to cradle our patties.

California: Tee Off (Santa Barbara)
2008-03-15 00:15:00
BurgerBlogger aka has about a 1000 more burger options then us....just a lil' jealous:This place is a must when visiting Santa Barbara , they're known for steaks and fried chicken. Being that i come here often I decided to go for the burger.... A general rule of mine: a burger from a steak house is most likely good, sadly this one was just ok. The patty and cheese just didn't mash together, it was too greasy (specially with the onion rings) and the bun was standard, but it looked good, especially as shown by Kenny and her rad outfit (when you come to taste the burgers stay at Kenny and Chris's place The Presidio Motel). And when you go to the Tee-Off have their fried chicken it's much better then the burger.Tee-Off3627 State StSanta Barbara , CA 93105(805) 687-1616

BunsOfGlory brings us back to Portland:Got a milkshake (strawberry is the choice of milkshake champions) and a "Base Camp Burger" at the Elmer's Restaurant located at the Strip-Mall 205 / Gateway fringe area. Despite the oval-like bun shape (AND two toothpicks in there), I thought it was pretty tasty. Came with Elmer's "secret sauce" (that sounds gross) which is a hybrid of thousand island / mayonnaise.Put a 'lil ketchup on the "Base Camp Burger" and you have yourself a pretty darn good hamburger.Elmer's9660 SE Stark St. Portland, OR 97216(503)256-0333

They are priced well and the place is everything you could ask a burger joint to be. That first one is your basic bacon cheeseburger. The second the "Nacho Burger" with that delicious ballpark nacho cheese, yes nacho cheese (probably works like Burgermeisters theory that getting your face messy just aids in the lubrication to shove the food in your mouth). Then there is the "French Dip" burger. The result is starchy, carb-ey goodness. That special mayo or spiced ketchup or whatever it is they put on there really makes the Muu Muu burger a tasty delight. Half pound patty, two onion rings, pepper bacon, sliced jalapenos, and something called "Hades" sauce, which is just a spicy bbq sauce as far as I can tell. $8.75 with fries. Calamity Jane's

GrillMarks finds a local pizza-burger:The Pizza burger post from a few days ago made me think of Calamity Jane's. Two locations, One in Newberg and the other just east of Sandy on 26. This self stylized burger parlor has something like 30 different burgers not counting the 10 different pizza burgers. Being on the wrong end of a rain storm that canceled my hike I found my self out past Sandy and decided to swing in. Having been in the past I can say in spite of what you see and what I am going to write you should go. Many of their burgers, excluding the one I just had on my ill fated journey, are tasty, and while the place is ultra kitschy nothing beats shoveling down a monster burger after a day on the mountain. Burgers are in the $8-10 range and you get pile of fries and they are open til

Also suppose to be a cabbie bar thanks to the good old Radio Cab HQ down the street. I understand that Joe's Cellar is actually the cabbie hang out but this place is not too be missed. Misrepresented as a dive bar by the masses but really more of a good solid local than a dive bar. You may argue with me but I don't get the feeling that 50 plus percent of the crowd is there every night drinking them selves into the next life as one sees in a proper dive bar. Lots of regulars sure but they all look like they got them selves a life outside those walls. Place was friendly, decent tap selection, and
