Software and Music Piracy. How do they do it? And why? 2007-05-06 16:38:08 Software and music piracy can and do become addictive. It starts out simple enough, some music, a few program discs from a friend. Once some people learn how to do it though, on a mass scale, they become hogs, their hard drives full of programs they will never use, ever.
I personally know people with hard drives and piles of discs, a lot of programs they don’t even know how to use, let alone need. They feel the programs have some inherent value though, to who I don’t know, so they just keep collecting.
Once you understand how to use a bit torrent client, it’s not tough, and how to use a search engine, you can pirate almost anything. But why? There are plenty of good open source programs on the market for free that outdo their brand name counterparts.

Boycotting Microsoft (Microsoft products are no longer needed) 2007-03-25 14:17:37 There was a time when the average user had no choice but to use Microsoft
products, that time has passed. Due to the efforts of the open source community the average user no longer has to use Microsoft products if they don’t want to. Now there is a choice.
If you are a gamer, you’re pretty much stuck with Microsoft for now. How many people are gamers though? Most people are just average users, they surf, email, do some photo editing..etc.
Ubuntu covers everything the average user does, and more. It is faster and more reliable than anything Microsoft has ever come out with and is totally free. You don’t need anti virus software either with Ubuntu, no adware programs, no crashes, imagine…and it is free.
Making the switch is easy. Go to the Ubuntu site and do a little reading, it’s not hard to install, download it, and forget about Microsoft and Norton, Mcafee, and all the numerous ad ware programs you may have needed in the past.
Bye Bye Microsoft.

Publisher: Canonical Ltd / Ubuntu Foundation
Price: Free
Ubuntu is a relatively new distribution of Linux, if compared to old stalwarts like Mandrake and Fedora that have been around for ages. Billing itself as ‘Linux for human beings’, it’s a free download that has gained a cult following for its ease of installation and ease of use. In less than 18 months since release it has become the most popular distro amongst bit-tech readers.
Ubuntu includes the latest Linux kernel, along with a customised Gnome desktop. It also includes some key applications to allow you to get started, including FireFox and OpenOffice. It has support for desktop themes and also includes some basic image editing tools.
If Windows
died tomorrow, Ubuntu would probably be Pete’s first port of call. It does everything that the vast majority of people need from an operating system and it costs absolutely nothing. It has lower system requirements than Windows and suf Read more:Alternative

Open Source Content Management Systems - CMS 2007-10-18 15:09:14 The days of static html websites are over, and have been for awhile. Most company, organization, and personal websites are interactive. There are a number of “ContentManagementSystems
” you can buy for a whack of money, some are cheap, most are simply crap. Add to that the fact that there is very little support for a number of the paid ones.
I have experience with a couple that I bought. The biggest piece of crap “CMS” I bought was called “Siteworkspro”. I don’t know what the “Pro” in the name refers to because there is nothing professional about it. Their own website barely works. The support forums don’t work, and you’ll be lucky to get an email back in less than 48 hours if you have a problem, like I did.
Sorry to pick on one product, this is just to illustrate a point, the point being, most paid software is buggy and has crappy support. On the other hand, open source software that is free has some great support, an Read more:Source
