Chinese SMS input on the iPhone - Pinyin Enabled!
2007-10-05 22:41:35
In my previous post, I recommended the ChinSMS app. Sad to say I wasn’t able to use Pinyin. But guess what, the developers have added Pinyin input in the nifty little app! I’ve tried it out myself and give it 5 out of 5 stars. Easy to use and none of the irritating problems I found with WeSMS (another Chinese SMS input app made by the mainland Chinese guys). Seriously? Go with this app, you won’t go wrong. Click here to download the latest version of ChinSMS.

If you can't jailbreak your iPhone with iBrickr ...
2007-10-05 00:48:54
If you can’t jailbreak your iPhone with iBrickr, try running AppTapp for Windows (download link here). It will automatically jailbreak a freshly restored iPhone. This is good to know should you restore your iPhone and fail to jailbreak it using iBrickr. Anyway I find it far easier to jailbreak using AppTapp than iBrickr.

iPhone v1.1.1 finally unlockable - but it's not free yet
2007-10-16 08:37:47
IphoneSimFree.com have now released a paid unlock-solution that will let you unlock ALL iPhone s, including v1.1.1. This can be done thanks to iPhone Dev Team’s recent solution for jailbreaking the new firmware. I’m sure there will be a free unlock soon also, but IphoneSimFree deserves some credit (read: $$$) for their hard work, so if you are in a hurry just buy a licence from them.

A fellow Singaporean blogger (here’s his site) has started a very interesting project and I am one of the first to join in. I am sure you would too, if you are an aspiring Internet marketer. Read on! I quote from the site: “The goal of this project is simply to increase traffic for all the participating bloggers and try to let us break into the Top 100 favourite blogs on Technorati . Getting into the Most Favorited list doesn’t depend on any other variables like the link count over time, only the number of favorites each blog receives. In a nutshell, exchanging favorites with every other favorited blogger participating in this project will grow your blog’s popularity exponentially. But remember, you need to exchange favorites with everyone else in the project! Interested? Here’s how to participate: You’ll need to have a Technorati Account. Read this if you screwed up your sound set
2007-10-07 11:03:01
Okay, the Customize.app is cool. It allows us, in theory, to change basically every component of the iPhone’s UI. Logo, banners, icons, you name it. So I decided to give this app a twirl and change my iPhone’s sound set. As I browsed through the sound sets available for download via Installer, the “UK English Woman” sound set caught my attention. I proceeded to install the sound set and made the dumbest mistake. I FORGOT TO BACKUP MY SYSTEM SOUND SET! This mistake became all the more painful later, as I found out. I sent a test SMS to myself and true enough, the custom sound set worked. But oh did it sound awful. I mean, seriously, I have heard better custom sounds (like Austin Power’s “Yeah Baby!” or the likes of it) than a British woman sounding like she had too much to drink and forced to speak. And at this point I decided to revert the system to the iPhone’s default sound set. Er, wait a minute, did I backup my default sound set? N

Need to restore your iPhone to ver 1.0.2? Read this!

Bought a poorly-unlocked iPhone and need to lock + re-unlock it again? Did something stupid to your iPhone and you wish you could restore it to its virgin state (unlocked, of course)? Or you’re just plain bored and want to do something DANGEROUS with your iPhone? If any of the above fits your present situation, do not fear. For I will tell you how to restore your iPhones to ver 1.0.2 SAFELY. First off, you need to put your iPhone into recovery mode. Start iTunes. Turn off the power of your iPhone, place it on its dock and turn on the iPhone. When the gray Apple logo appears, press and hold the wake/sleep button and the home button. Do not release the buttons until a yellow triangle shows up on the phone. At this point, iTunes will detect your iPhone is in recovery mode. Now you will need to download the ver 1.0.2 firmware and save it on your computer before starting the restore process. For legal reasons, I cannot host this file on my site but you can Google for the file n

Proven method for unlocking + activating a new iPhone
2007-10-06 10:46:42
I have unlocked a handful of iPhone s over the past few days and found a work flow that made it quite simple and hassle-free to unlock v1.0.2 iPhones. (Actually all this information is not new on my site except they are in bits and pieces, here and there.) Anyway, let’s assume you have a brand new v1.0.2 iPhone. Wait a minute, do I hear you ask, “How do I know what version is my iPhone?” My answer to you, my young padawan, is to dock your iPhone and the version will show up on iTunes. The other easy way is to just turn on your iPhone, tap the “Settings” icon, followed by the “General” option, and finally the “About” option. Your iPhone’s version will be displayed there. If you find that you have a v1.1.1 iPhone in your hands, my condolences to you. There are no unlocks yet for the new firmware and you’re pretty much stuck, until someone comes out with a new v1.1.1 unlock. But this will take some time, since Apple has ma

Simple steps to unlock your ver 1.1.1 iPhone
2007-10-19 23:30:56
With the release of AnySIM v1.1.1 unlocker, I think it will be useful to (once again) describe in simple steps how YOU could also unlock your own iPhone s. Before we start, let me make this clear. If you have a previously unlocked iPhone and want to use v1.1.1, you need to have the baseband revirginized (see my other guide) and then update/unlock it. This guide is not for you. The goal of this guide is to downgrade a virgin v1.1.1 iPhone to v1.0.2 (in order to use iBrickr) and unlock it so as to be able to connect to any telco. With that out of the way, let’s get down to business shall we? Step 1. Download the tools that you are going to need for the unlock. For your benefit, I have mirrored them here on my site. iBrickr v0.91 PACAY.rar wiNstaller Step 2. Start iTunes on your computer. Turn on your iPhone and place it on its dock. Start iBrickr. You will get a message from iBrickr saying that you’re running iPhone firmware 1.1.1. Click on “See how deep the r

Apple planning iPhone SDK for Feb 2008, but I'm not thrilled
2007-10-18 07:00:46
If you have followed the iPhone buzz on the Internet last week, there were rumours that Apple would be offering limited 3rd party app support. Well today, it has become official. Read this announcement if you have not seen the news. Apparently, Apple has decided to bow down to worldwide iPhone hackers like you and me, and open its iPhone doors to 3rd party apps. But I am not too excited about this new prospect. First off, Apple has stuck to its guns and is not going to give up its monopolistic affiliation with AT&T (or other profiteering telcos in other countries where the iPhone has been officially released). That’s a really bad thing in my opinion. To have the open source community come aboard and develop apps for the iPhone, you got to have widespread take-up of the iPhone in the very first place. It looks to me like Apple is opening the door halfway and refusing to let the masses in - yet. Nevertheless, the more important reason why I am evidently not thrilled by t

Unlocking your v1.1.1 iPhone - Easy Peasy!
2007-11-10 03:59:46
The earlier how-to’s I had posted describe how you can downgrade your ver 1.1.1 iPhone to ver 1.0.2, and then unlock it. Now I will describe how you can unlock a ver 1.1.1 iPhone as is. That means you need not downgrade to 1.0.2, and your phone’s firmware must be in virgin state (meaning, if you have a 1.0.2 phone and would like to upgrade and subsequently unlock it at 1.1.1, you will have to revirginize the baseband before attempting this). I am not going to plagiarize other’s writings here, so I will refer you to an excellent how-to for unlocking virgin 1.1.1 phones: HERE I have personally followed the instructions there and aside from a few steps that I found irrelevant and unnecessary, the rest of the guide worked flawlessly for me. And now, I have an unlocked version 1.1.1 iPhone in my hands! Wonderful!
