*Insert whining here*
2008-04-01 11:53:01
I hate whining. I really do. But in this case, I just can’t help it. WAAHHHH! I have been working from an updated version of the couch 2 5k workout. Updated by me because I was bored stiff by the original. I run/walk 4 times per week on my treadmill while I watch The View. I have been doing great. My run portions of the workout were going very well. I felt great. Sweat my ass off but still able to function etc. By my workout on Wednesday, I was flying. Saturday morning, I woke up to a beautiful blue sky. Light breeze blowing. It was a picture perfect day. So, I decided to take my workout outside. I put on my shoes, my comfiest clothing, grabbed the mp3 player and my pedometer.  I knew when I walked, when I ran in my workout, but I didn’t know how far it was around my block.

7 Days To a Brand New You
2008-03-31 13:46:01
I wish I could take credit for this article… but alas, I do not write for .  But I totally had to share it with you.  This is for the beginners who need to get on the right track - or for those of us who have gotten off the track and need to get back on You look in the mirror one day and everything is wrong. Your hair, your teeth, your skin, your shape. Especially your shape. So you write a long list, and you make a pact with yourself that tomorrow you’ll start a new whiz-bang weight-loss and life-changing plan. According to your calculations, you will be trim, taut and irresistible in three months. Three weeks down the road, things are worse. What went wrong? Basically, you fell victim to the “END” (Everything Now Dilemma). With END you have so much on your mind

It’s Friday!!
2008-04-04 13:58:00
It’s Weigh-In day of course.  I’m down another 1.6 pounds, so I’m definitely on the right track now!  It feels good after gaining, gaining, gaining for like 3 or 4 weeks in a row.  Not that I’m anyhwere near where I want to be of course, lol, but I’m moving down… How did you all do this week?  For me, my struggle was with the left over Easter candy that still hangs around.  It’s pretty sad - my son hasn’t asked for candy in like a week but yet it is still sitting in a bag on my washing machine.  I was afraid to throw it out because I might want some.  Craziness huh!  I haven’t eaten too much of it - but enough that it slowed down what could have been a good weight loss week for me.  Today though, I’m throwing it out - all

Rethink and Re-evaluate
2008-04-03 10:57:00
I had a set back this past week. A BIG ONE in my book. I hurt myself with my workout AND the scale climbed up a few pounds. This didn’t really do much to me physically but emotionally, it killed me. I beat myself up. In a bad way. I am going to share with you readers, a few things from my experience book with regard to my set back now, in hopes that maybe someone will learn something from me. I began my journey in October. A pretty drastic journey actually. It was after much research and thought that I made these changes in my life, but I made drastic changes. I became a vegetarian after being a meat and potatoes gal for over 35 years. My lifestyle changes were not easy. Sure, I feel great. But some days, it is all that I can do to keep from woofing down a whopper with cheese. I crave

The Best New Sneakers
2008-04-02 13:42:00
I decided to expand upon Shelah’s post and help you all find the best new sneakers!  Now some of us are lucky enough to be able to be custom fitted for sneakers, but some of us are on a significant budget and are unable to do so.  For those of you who are like me, here are some of the greatest sneakers for 2008.  Prices are actually dropping, and if you are even luckier, you may live near a sneaker outlet store, or you can find great sales.  So even though they may say that they are around $100 or so, you can find them significantly lower through the internet and store only sales.  So here goes: Best Walking Sneaker - Saucony Grid Instep RT Saucony - only around $60!  Good for walkers of all speeds becaue they are lightweight and not clunky like other snea

Bumps in the Road
2008-04-08 10:50:00
You all know that I have had a rough couple of weeks in the weight loss department. Due to these bumps in my road, I sort of lost sight of what the heck I was doing this for. I forgot all the good that has been coming my way as a result of my hard work for the past few months. I forgot about dropping from a size 18 to a 12 being baggy on me. Yes. I am pathetic. Well, I was pathetic. I have given myself a once over...for the third or fourth time. I forget how many “re-evaluations” I actually have done. I think that everyone needs it from time to time. Regardless, I think I found the root of my troubles though. I hate exercise. I really hate it. It is always like a chore to me. Gotta put on the right shoes. Gotta get out the things you need..and lets not even discuss the time manageme

We’re Having a Party
2008-04-07 05:00:00
I love parties. A Bunch. Today, it feels like a big one in here. You see, Erin and I have been working our asses off to make a huge overhaul to this place. You didn’t notice? Pssshhttt. It has been a work in progress for quite some time. The past week, we knew we were getting close to launch and it was all we could do to keep from pissing ourselves silly. Since things are SO different, we decided that we should skip a weight loss/health post, just for today and give our readers a guided tour. Step onto the tram. Keep your arms and legs inside the windows please and for god sake, pay attention. There is a lot to see. Lets start with the lovely header. Made by Chica just for us. I found the artwork and knew it was perfect for our new direction. We are like two gals at a pretty beach.

At What Point Did You Give Up on Yourself?
2008-04-09 10:46:00
As I watched the Biggest Loser last night, the question asked by Ali really stuck with me… You have to ask yourself this one thing - At what point did you give up on yourself? At some point we all gave up on ourself otherwise we wouldn’t be in this position of being overweight, unhappy, and looking for a way to change our lives.  For me, I can’t remember a particular day or even year, but yet, it slowly happened over time.  Just year after year I gained a little more at a time for numerous reasons.  I was a little heavy in high school.  Probably about a size 11 in high school which by the way I would kill for today - but at the time I thought I was huge.  I knew I was pretty though and had boyfriends and so forth so I felt okay about myself.  It was

TGIF!
2008-04-11 12:58:00
Even though I don’t work outside the home, I often look forward to Friday.  It’s something that never changes no matter whether you work from home or not.  It used to be that I would look forward to Friday because it meant no more work, but now that I work the weekends so often it doesn’t count much towards that But at least now I have another reason to look forward to Friday. It’s weigh-in day!  Today I got on the scale and I’m down another 2.2 pounds!  I have been walking everyday and really watching what I am eating… at least since my breakthrough So, I expect a big loss next week, but for now I’m thrilled with my 2.2 pounds.  Now that I’ve given up my Weight Watchers subscription I actually have to manually write it down - BY HAND!

Junk Food Junkies Unite
2008-04-10 10:24:00
I am a recovering addict. No. Not drugs. Junk food. I filled my body with it on a regular basis. Chocolate, soda, fast food, chips and any other thing I could find that I thought tasted good. Junk food fueled my life. It wasn’t a very healthy choice for me. As a matter of fact, the various junk food that I was consuming were the very things that I disposed of when I started cleaning the “yuckie” things out of my life. First went sodas. Pepsi was my drug of choice. Nothing could compare. Oh how good it tasted straight from the fridge. Icy cold. Smooth and sweet. When I was stressed, I could down a whole one without a breath. I still crave them. More than anything that I have tossed out. Pepsi still haunts me. Then, I got rid of all packaged sweets. You know, twinkies, candy bars

It won’t make you pee green
2008-04-12 10:59:00
The benefits of wheat grass are amazing. I began looking into this when I was studying about Raw foodism. I have seen it on the menu at my weekend hot spot and until Friday afternoon, I was never adventurous enough to try it. Friday, I don’t really know what prompted the plunge but I took it. So did my hub. We each had a 1 oz serving. First, I have to tell you, it is GREEN. Really green. I smell everything before I consume it. Sometimes that is a good thing. Sometimes it isn’t. Honestly, the smell was exactly what I expected. It smelled like grass. Fresh cut grass. I really had no clue what fresh cut grass would taste like but I soon found out. It was sweet yet spicy. It didn’t taste like what I imagined grass would taste like. It was a bit oniony. I actually tasted mine before ti

Are we from Venus? Really?
2008-04-15 10:06:00
I know that many of you watch The Biggest Loser. I am setting here wondering what we are going to be addicted to after tonight’s finale. I also wondered up until last night, why the men seemed to be able to drop more weight than the ladies each and every week. It just didn’t seem fair to me. Well, I have solved the mystery dear readers. Please note that I didn’t actually solve it...I just hunted and hunted and found the reasoning behind this mystery. The main reason that we women have to work harder is the fact that we don’t produce testosterone. That magical hormone does two things: it supports greater muscle mass, so a man’s resting metabolism is usually higher and it promotes more muscle mass with exercise. Both of these things make it possible for men to burn greater numbe

Remember the Buddy System?
2008-04-14 12:55:00
When you were younger you may have called it the buddy system, but today we call it support.  You have probably needed support in most things you have done such as getting married, changing jobs, moving to a new town, having a baby or losing a loved one. In each of these situations, you’ve probably accepted the support of other people, which likely was of significant help as you adjusted to your new situation.  Losing weight or starting a weight loss program is no exception. Getting support for your efforts — whether through a friend, a trained professional or a group of fellow travelers on the path to a healthy weight — can ultimately mean the difference between your success and failure. Support can be emotional — a shoulder to lean on when you’re discouraged. And i

The Biggest Loser Finale
2008-04-16 11:06:00
So, if you haven’t watched the show and don’t know who won then you best skip this post If you already know then you must be so happy!!  Starting at a weight of 234 pounds, Ali lost a stunning 112 pounds to take the title of the Biggest Loser .  The first female contestant to ever win the Biggest Loser!  It was a thrill for everyone - and you could totally tell she knew it that she had won… She gets on the scale and Allison Sweeney said she had to lose 105 pounds - and she kept repeating it like she couldn’t believe that she was going to win… it was a very nice moment for her.  For us, it really shows us that just because we can’t lose weight as fast as men, we can lose more I think I might have told you - I can totally relate to Ali because I’m

Couch to 5k AGAIN
2008-04-17 10:30:37
Everywhere I turn, I am seeing things about the couch to 5k. People are all over this. Including me. I don’t know what it is either. I hate running. I hated running for PE in school when they made us do it yet here I am. Planning to run a half marathon. It’s like I have been taken over by martians or something. I also notice that many of our readers are using this program as part of their workout. I hope you all are taking advantage of the daily workouts that we have posted here. I have been doing them every single day for a week now. It’s not quite as good as Jillian but it’s a nice add to what I am already doing. In any case...back on track...Couch to 5K. I started with the 7 month program. I didn’t think I could handle the more aggressive 4 month program. Didn’t THINK

Workouts make you happy
2008-04-19 10:23:00
It is a proven fact that working out can improve your mood. Why is it then that when we are stressed out or otherwise feeling crappy that the first thing we do, is skip this vitally important mood enhancer? Yeah, I don’t know either. I learned early on, after I began my TKD classes, that there is nothing that makes me feel better than kicking the crap out of bags and other padded and protected cohorts in my class. So no matter how horrible my day has been, if I think that I can hold my emotions in check, I attend class. I work myself into soreness and ultimately, happiness. Scientifically, I really am not crazy. I looked it up. This is what I found: Exercise has long been touted as a way to maintain physical fitness and help prevent high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases.

Yep… Still Friday
2008-04-18 14:43:00
I woke up this morning praying it wasn’t Friday .  Before I figured out that it really was I was already thinking - Oh please don’t make me weigh-in - PLEASE!  But alas, it is still Friday and I weighed in.  It wasn’t AS bad as I thought but I did indeed put on 1.8 pounds this week.  Man did I screw up!  Barely any exercise, a big juicy cheeseburger, side of fries, and a salad loaded with blue cheese dressing!  (Shhh… don’t tell anyone, but I ordered EXTRA blue cheese!) Of course I put it on the side so I didn’t actually use all of it, but enough to make me very very happy - and very very regretful.  I screwed up and good - don’t get me wrong, it was delicious!  But I didn’t need the blue cheese, the burger, and the fries all at on

I have a new life coach
2008-04-22 10:44:00
She arrived on Monday for our first “assessment”. The post man delivered her right to my front door. In a cute little cardboard box labeled - AMAZON. Yep. I now have my ultimate wish...Jillian Michaels is living in my house. Well, not really living. She is more like....hanging out on my DVD shelf. That’s right. I now own “The Biggest Winner” workout DVD set. Not one but 5 DVD’s packed full of Jillian. Ordered last week from the wicked shop right here on the web site. My new workout routine looks like this, for this week: Monday -DDR for 60 minutes. Workout mode & Daily from the OWW site. TKD class - 45 minutes DONE Tuesday - Jillian, I love you day. Shape Up - Front DVD in it’s entirety. Unless of course I keel over in the midst of it. Wednesday - Couch to 5k - Week

Quit Smoking = Weight Gain
2008-04-21 15:27:00
Alright, so today I try yet again to quit smoking.  No biggie - not worth mentioning - except… The question always looms as to whether or not I will gain weight.  I have quit before, although only for a few days at a time, and have felt like I was eating more, but for the most part you don’t gain weight because of what you eat after you quit smoking, you are gaining weight because your metabolism is actually slowing down… yeah, like I need THAT to happen.  Did you know that smoking cuts 200 calories per day in a heavy smoker?  Well apparently I wasn’t smoking enough to really reap the benefits of that one.  Did you also know that Nicotine is an appetite suppressant?  No way - really?  Um, then why didn’t it suppress the 3 chocolate chip coo

The Truth About Beverages
2008-04-23 10:31:00
As we have talked about before, people are insistent that they not only eat their calories but drink them as well.  I have preached water since I gave up sodas about 2 years ago now (maybe 3?), but I am a failure at giving up one of my favorite beverages - BEER!  You may think I’m joking, but I’m not.  No, I’m not an alcoholic, but I go out and buy a 6-pack once a week to enjoy on the weekend, and I also go out with my friends or to a bar and down about 5 to 7 nice cold beers about every other week.  So basically I’m drinking sometimes 10 to 14 beers every other weekend and about 6 every other other weekend.  Does that make sense?  Wow, when I type it out it sounds like a lot more than it really is, lol.  But you have to remember, I weigh over

What exactly is 100 anyway?
2008-04-24 10:54:00
100 calories. It doesn’t sound like much does it? In fact, to most of us, it is a snack. If you are on a 1200 - 1500 calorie per day diet, 100 calories is a wonderful snack. But what exactly does 100 calories LOOK like? I did a quiz over at Women’s Health and I am sad to say...I failed. I didn’t just fail, I failed badly. My setting at my desk going “OMG, how can I screw THIS up” for twenty minutes is what prompted this post. I am giving you guys a list. The 100 calorie list. You can print it out, take it with you, staple it to your forehead, whatever you do, just learn it. 100 calorie snacks: 18 Fat Free Rold Gold Tiny Twists 5 Hershey’s Special Dark chocolate kisses 8 shrimp and 2 Tbsp cocktail sauce 1 Tbsp peanuts and 2 Tbsp dried cranberries 1/3 of a plain 4 ¼-inch bag

Friday Weigh-In
2008-04-25 13:03:00
Happy Friday everyone!  Wave your hands if you are excited about weighing in today!! *crickets chirping* Hmmm… I see no one is waving… why is that?  Lately the people who are weighing in are getting fewer and fewer but our readership is getting larger.  Why is that?  Are you not weighing in because you are “off track?” That is even more of a reason to weigh in!  We can’t help you if you don’t let us For me personally, I am NOT excited about weighing in today.  I went to a girls night in last night, and OMG, I filled up on nothing more than beer and those damn chocolate chip cookies my friend Karyn so nicely laid out for us.  Well, I did dip into the fruit salad, but not nearly as much as the Queso dip!  But that’s okay, I

Holy Wonderful Weekend
2008-04-28 10:18:00
I know that it’s Monday. I know that I am supposed to be sharing some huge thought induced weight loss advice. I can’t. I am too excited about my weekend adventure. I have to share it with you guys. I bring you: Queenie’s Weekend Diary. This past Saturday, I made plans to attend the NBC6 Health and Fitness Expo. I had never been to an event like this and really had no clue what to expect. We got up early and picked up my friend Mary. We needed to grab a healthy breakfast. Healthy Breakfast = Smoothie King. Here are Mary and I getting in gear to be health mongers for the day. This sort of set the pace for the rest of our day. From here, we had one more pit stop to make before tackling the Expo. We needed to stop at Whole Food’s so that we could pop Mary’s Wheat Grass cher

It’s Tuesday? Really?
2008-04-29 14:48:00
Given the fact that it is almost 10 and my post isn’t up should tell you all how my day is going. Also, the fact that I needed the 7 YO to tell me 4 times that it was Tuesday today...yeah...ummm. I haven’t done a full work out since Friday last week. I usually don’t do the formal stuff on the weekends. Weekend workouts consist of yard work, hiking when the family goes and then of course, the “wifely obligations” (in our house, it’s more like my hub has obligations though) I got up Monday and was just tired and really sore. I didn’t realize that I felt like crap due to my wheatgrass addiction until 11 pm last night. Another story, another time. Needless to say, I only did half of my Couch 2 5k yesterday. My shoulders were killing me so I stopped. So, what do we do when we ar

The Love of Oatmeal
2008-04-30 13:13:00
Do you remember when you were a kid and your mother would grab that big ass box of Quaker Oats - you know the one that you never really knew how long it had been there?  As you watched her heat up water on the stove and screw off the top of the old fashioned oatmeal container you would dread what was coming.  That was then… and boy have things changed!  Instant oatmeal came about, and finally we tossed those large jugs of oats out and started making breakfast more convenient.  However, with instant oatmeal came high calories and lots of sugar.  But man, was it good!  My personal favorite was the Maple and Brown Sugar… I could eat 3 packages at once!  And at 150 calories per package it sure added up.  Not to mention the 31 grams of carbs which is

Springtime and Fresh Food
2008-05-01 10:52:00
I frequently mention to our readers here that I belong to an organic produce co-op. Honestly, I don’t think I could have made my switch to a vegetarian life without it. I am lucky to also live in an area where I can snatch up fresh produce pretty much year round. Never fear dear readers. Because I have found an entire directory of Farmers Markets for you all to browse and hunt through. www.farmersmarket.com They list the locations as well as the hours and time of year the markets are open. Now, would it be worth a drive for you to pick up your fresh produce form a farmers market? Why, of course it would. Depending upon how far that drive was. Here is the low down on Farmer’s Markets vs shopping for produce at a place like Walmart. Walmart has centrally located shipping centers. All

Weigh In Day!
2008-05-02 14:04:00
I’m not going into a long huge story about how I didn’t lose weight this week.  I have failed you all :( Quite frankly I feel like a loser.  Somehow I managed to gain 2.2 pounds.  I completely was off my game this week.  No exercise except for 2 days, no motivation to skip those onion rings at Red Robin even though I got a petite burger and a side salad with fat free dressing.  I had no ability to make sure I ate my healthy snacks so that I wasn’t completely starving by dinnertime.  This whole week was a complete waste of time for my diet.  But that’s okay… as we will always tell you all the time - tomorrow is a new day!  What about you all?  How did you do this week? But I am excited about something.  Yesterday my Puritan

My New BFF
2008-05-03 15:05:00
Move over Jillian - I got a new best friend on Friday. It arrived via UPS. My cute little Bioset Sprouter. I saw this nifty gadget a few weeks ago on Martha Stewart and let me tell you, for a veg gal like me, it looked fabulous.  You see, I love sprouts. LOVE them. I make tomato and sprout sandwiches. I put them in salads. Grilled cheese and sprout sandwiches. Yum. Now, I can grow my own. I purchased the organic sprouting seeds at Whole Foods a full two weeks before my sprouter arrived. Yep, THAT anxious folks. Sprouts are a funny thing. It’s sort of like eating grass but they are packed full of yummy flavors in such a tiny package. Health benefits? Oh yeah. Sprouts like alfalfa, radish, broccoli, clover and soybean contain concentrated amounts of phytochemicals (plant compounds)

My Biggest Loser Weekend
2008-05-05 13:12:00
So about a week ago I broke down and bought the Biggest Loser Cookbook - yes I did!  As many of you know I don’t cook.  I mean never.  I hate cooking.  Sure, I heat up, I pop in, and I occasionally “bake” but I never really cook.  So, for me to buy a cookbook takes a lot of prodding.  I had bought my Deceptively Delicious cookbook awhile back and I do use that one, just not as much as I would like.  So I decided to try this cookbook this weekend.  First of all, the cookbook has a little more than just recipes.  There are actual sections to read and learn about how the Biggest Loser Diet actually works and how all the contestants lost the weight and so forth.  So, that was interesting.  But as I got into the recipes I realized
