Denpasar and Its Surrounding 2007-10-03 03:52:00 Puputan SquareRight in the heart of Denpasar
, the grassy park known as Puputan square commemorates the events of September 20, 1906, when the rajah of Badung marched out of his palace, followed by hundreds of his subjects, and faced the invading Ducth head on. Dressed all in holy white, each man, woman and chilldren clasping a golden Kris, the people of Badung had psyched themselves up for a Puputan, or ritual fight to the death, rather than submit to the Ducth colonialists' demands.Historical accounts vary, but its thought that the mass suicide took place on this square and was incited by Badung's chief priest who, on a signal from the rajah, stabbed his king with the royal Kris. Hundreds of citizens followed suit, and those that didn't were shot down by Ducth bullets; the final death toll was reported to be somewhere between 600 and 2000.The huge bronze statue on the northern edge of the park is a memorial to the Badung citizen who fought and died in the 1906 Puputan, and a commem

Denpasar Kumbasari Market 2007-09-28 00:15:00 Pasar Badung and Pasar KumbasariThe biggest and best of Denpasar
's traditional markets is the chaotic Pasar Badung, which stands at the heart of the downtown area, set slightly back off Jalan Gajah Mada. It used to be housed in a traditional three-story covered stone and brick Pasar beside the Sungi Badung, but this burnt down in 2000, so the stallholders now conduct their trade in the open air, 24 hours a day, in an impossibly packed warren of overflowing alleyways.Easiest access into the market is from the northern end of Jalan Sulawesi, though many of the most interesting wares, including sarongs and ceremonial paraphernalia, are set out on the stalls that about the western edge of Jalan Sulawesi and can be perused from the street. Be prepared to find yourself landed with a guide: local women hang out around the Jalan Sulawesi entrance and are keen to accompany tourist round market.Just west across the narrow Sungai Badung from Pasar Badung, a few metres south of Jalan Gajah Mada , Read more:Market

in Denpasar
Overlooking the eastern edge of Puputan Square on pedestrianized Jalan Mayor Wisnu, the Bali Museum (sun-thurs 7.30am-3pm, fri 7.30am-1pm; Rp750, children Rp250; turquoise Kereneng-Ubung bemo route) is Denpasar most significant attraction, prettily located in a series of traditional courtyards. The downstairs hall of the main muilding, which stands at the back of the entrance courtyard, mostly houses items from Bali's prehistory, including stone axes, bronze jeweler and a massive stone sarcophagus from the second century BC. The four black-and-white photographs of the 1906 Puputan are also well worth lingering aver. Upstairs, you'll find a fine exhibition of traditional household utensils, many of which are still in common use today. These include the coconut grater - here carved into an animal shape, complete with genitalia - and the bizarre, tiny bamboo cages for fighting. The compact First Pavilion holds some fine examples of the four major styles of Balines
South Bali Travel Guides 2007-08-23 21:03:00 The triangle of mainly flat land that makes up the south is some of the most fertile in Bali, and also the most densely populated, with more than a thousand people resident on every square kilometer. Bali's administrative capital, Denpasar, is here, and so too are the island's major tourists resorts, which have sprung up along the spectacular white-sand beaches: at Kuta and Jimbaran in the west, and Sanur and Nusa Dua in the east. Furthermore, the combination of large offshore reefs and a peculiarly shaped coastline have made this region a genuine surfers' paradise, with some of the best breaks in the world.DenpasarDespire roaring motorbikes and round-the-clock traffic congestion, Bali's capital Denpasar (meaning "next to the market") remains a pleasant city at heart, centred on a grassy square and dominated by family compounds grouped into traditional banjar districts, with just a few major shopping streets criss-crossing the centre. It feels nowhere near as hectic as Kuta but, as Read more:South
