Splogged in under a month! :O
2007-10-04 15:37:15
Nerd Culture hasn’t even been online a month yet and already it’s been splogged! In case you were wondering; splogging is when another site copies your content and uses it for their own site. Often times file links are even left intact, direct linking to your own server. This is how I tracked down this one. PSPBlenderBlog.com copied my post about Dark_AleX’s 3.71 M33 firmware release for the PSP. In doing so, they linked to the firmware file I was hosting which, of course; shows up in the referer links of my blog stats. Many sites use a custom made anti-leech system for file references on the site, but I hadn’t got around to making one for Nerd Culture yet. Instead, when I spotted my files being direct linked, I changed the filename, so now anyone that clicks the download link on their site is linked to my home page. Thanks for the free traffic PSPBlenderBlog.com! (more…)

Golden Age Collectables - Otaku Paradise
2007-10-03 20:40:56
In the heart of downtown Vancouver, right on Granville St. you can find the Nerd Nirvana known as Golden Age Collectables . These guys carry more manga, anime, graphics novels and figures than you’d ever care to know existed. When I was in Vancouver on business recently I picked up a copy of NextWave here and blogged about how awesome it is. This place is jam-packed full of awesomeness of such magnitude as NextWave. They also had probably everything Neil Gaiman has ever written, including more obscure stuff like the edition of Sandman with art from Yoshitaka Amano. For those that don’t know; Mr. Amano was the concept artist for all the Final Fantasy games up until X. His brilliant artistry and unique style is well known in Otaku dom. (more…)

Serenity - Better than Star Wars?
2007-10-02 09:03:16
Step aside Star Wars , sci-fi has a new King. This epic masterpiece from acclaimed television director, Joss Whedon, is brimming with style and attitude. A six-gun western attitude in a futuristic dystopia make this movie finale to the unfortunately failed TV show, Firefly, an extremely enjoyable adventure into rogue space. Firefly could’ve breathed some life back into the presently stagnant science fiction genre, but the show was cut before it even got a chance to build a fan base. The Space Channel apparently felt that repeats of Star Trek were more important. (more…)

Haruhi Suzumiya - A fickle God.
2007-10-01 07:00:00
For those that haven’t yet seen it, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya is a really great show about a girl named Haruhi who seems to unknowingly have the power of God. She can do absolutely anything, however; her normal human common sense keeps her from actually doing things that, to a normal human, would be impossible. This is the only thing stopping the world from plunging into utter chaos. You see Haruhi is the type of person that is easily bored by everyday things. On her first day at her new school she introduces herself saying that she doesn’t want to talk to anyone that isn’t an alien, time traveller or esper. Because of her desire to see these strange things she has actually created these things in the guise of regular humans and forms them into a school club she refers to as the SOS Brigade. She, however; has no knowledge of what they are and they try hard to keep it that way, but the problem is that if Haruhi becomes bored the world will be consumed by darkn

NextWave - Agents Of H.A.T.E.
2007-09-30 15:48:40
I apologize for the lack of updates the last few days, I had business out of town and was too busy to get anything new on the site. I’m back now though, and with lots of cool things to talk about. I had went to a business conference type thing in Vancouver so, while I was there, I stopped by Golden Age Collectibles on Granville St. to peruse their impressive collection of nerd swag when I stumbled upon a copy of NextWave. I had -coughpiratedcough- a copy of this off the internet awhile back and very much enjoyed it, but it’s so hard to find things like these, so I never managed to actually buy a copy. But when I saw it sitting on that shelf there it emanated a holy grail-esque aura that I just couldn’t help but be entranced by–though my credit card balance would disagree at this point. I bought it and decided I would talk about it on here for anyone that might care to know about it. (more…)

Eyeshine - Some great mellow Alt Rock.
2007-09-25 17:35:58
I doubt many of you have heard of Eyeshine, but some may have heard of Johnny Yong Bosch–possibly from my previous post about Eternal Sonata. Johnny is the English voice actor for Vash The Stampede from Trigun, Claus Valka from Last Exile, Gram River from Mars Daybreak, Renton Thurston from Eureka Seven and Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach. Yeah, he’s pretty big in the anime voice acting industry. Most people don’t know him for the other part of his life though; his band Eyeshine. They sound a bit like Jimmy Eat World combined with a dash of Yellowcard and the more mellow Green Day songs from their earlier days. (more…)

Eternal Sonata - The best RPG in a decade.
2007-09-24 02:11:32
Eternal Sonata is epic beyond the magnitude any role playing game has achieved in likely a decade . From the artistry of the graphics and sound to the intricacy of the character and plot development, Eternal Sonata succeeds in far surpassing everything else. When I first played the demo on Xbox Live I knew I had to have the game, but even so; I was still, with my jaw on the floor, blown away by how amazing a game it is when I finally got a hold of my own copy. I had intended on writing this review a few days ago, but I just couldn’t pull myself away from it. That’s how good it is; so good I played through it twice before managing to pry myself away from it for long enough to write a review. (more…)

Dark_AleX is back with a custom 3.71 FW!
2007-09-23 22:40:48
Big, huge, gigantic news! The great Dark_AleX, responsible for all the custom firmwares available for the PSP who claimed to have gone into retirement, is back under the name of M33 releasing a brand new custom firmware for both PSP Fat and Slim! The new firmware is barely out of the gate and is already fully hacked. (more…)

Lucky Star - An anime for true anime fans.
2007-09-18 19:08:03
Lucky Star on the surface isn’t really about anything per se. It’s the day to day happenings of 4 school girls with somewhat average lives. What makes Lucky Star great though is not the plot on the surface, but rather; all the obscure references to older anime and parts of Japanese pop-culture. If you haven’t watched a good majority of anime considered to be classic, most if the humor will be over your head. There is references all over the place–it’s like the Family Guy of Japan. (more…)

John Woo Knows how to make a video game.
2007-09-17 14:07:12
Stranglehold is John Woo’s video game sequel to his cult-hit action movie, Hard-Boiled. The game just reeks of epic John Woo project–if this game doesn’t put up a strong fight with Bioshock for game-of-the-year I will be beyond shocked. Every thing about this game is truly deserving of being called next-gen. Inspector Tequila is most certainly the most awesome action game lead in years. He has so much style and personality to him. After a cop goes missing he goes to track him down only to find out he’s already dead. The investigation turns into an all out war between crime syndicates and Tequila is stuck right in the middle with only one thing on his mind; revenge. Somebody has got his old girlfriend captive–he’s going to get her back and nothing is going to stop him. (more…)

Casshern - Live Action Anime never felt so right.
2007-10-15 11:46:44
Casshern at last comes to North America on October 16th! That’s tomorrow! If you watch one movie this year-heck, this decade-make it this. From the cinematography to the drama to the action this movie is leaps and bounds beyond anything in it’s realm. Some of the more hardcore anime fans out there may think the name sounds familiar; this is actually a remake of the hit 1973 anime Shinzo Ningen Casshân! Plus the theme song is done by Utada Hikaru…honestly, how could you possibly go wrong with her writing the theme song? Think of it as The Matrix if it was a billion times more awesome. That’s one heck of a lot of awesome. (more…)

Save Totoro’s Forest! - Miyazaki’s inspiration.
2007-10-13 13:23:39
Famed Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki has raised 73 million yen (US$620,000) to preserve a small forest local residents call Totoro’s Forest . 25 million yen (US$210,000) of the 73 million yen total came from donations from the general public! This enormous sum has been presented to the city of Higashimurayama in hopes that the historical patch of trees can remain for future generations to enjoy. (more…)

Gitaroo Man gives Acid Rock a new meaning.
2007-10-12 11:37:23
Gitaroo Man is a very odd game but is, quite possibly, the best rhythm game of all time. It is so very Japanese it hurts. I’m sure the development team we’re all tripping on acid when they made this game…it certainly feels like you are when you are playing it. The game starts off with you playing as a regular kid named U-1 having troubles with school work, girls and bullies that has just arrived home after a long and arduous day at school. Suddenly your dog, Puma, speaks to you saying that you are the heir to the legendary Gitaroo-Man legacy and that you need to learn how to use the power of Gitaroo to save the universe. You are the only remaining Gitaroo-Man, so you must journey through space battling Gravillions to take back the other Gitaroos they have taken. (more…)

September Stats - Month #1
2007-10-11 22:29:19
It’s been one month since Nerd Culture went online and I’ve been quite happy with the response so far! The site has had 599 visits and 1231 pageviews since the night of September 11th when the site went online. I’m looking forward to seeing what this site grows into! Maybe one day I’ll even rival Danny Choo for traffic. (more…)

Hayate No Gotoku - I think I might drop it.
2007-10-11 19:33:13
Hayate No Gotoku looked like a decent show, but I’m just not getting into it. I think it just feels too slow to me, it’s not a bad show if you’ve got the time to watch it, but I have plenty of other things in my list of stuff to watch. Anyone else have any thoughts on it? I watched the first 10 episodes, but it didn’t feel like it was going to start to actually get going so I’m going to put it on indefinite hold for now. (more…)

Grave Of The Fireflies makes me want to curl up in a corner and cry.
2007-10-10 15:12:45
Grave Of The Fireflies is a movie written and directed by Isao Takahata, with the help of Studio Ghibli’s animators. But don’t let the Ghibli association fool you; this ain’t no cheery Ghibli flick. This is World War II in Japan–this is hell on earth. This is the bitter tale of the relationship between two orphaned children, Seita and his younger sister Setsuko. The children lose their mother in the firebombing of Kobe, and their father in service to the Imperial Japanese Navy, and as a result they are forced to try to survive amidst widespread famine and the callous indifference of their countrymen. Even their relatives shrug them off, leaving them to fend for themselves. (more…)

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - I laughed until I couldn’t breathe.
2007-10-09 13:29:57
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi is one of the most random shows I have ever seen. It follows the Excel Saga concept where each episode takes place in it’s own unique world, but this is a much funnier show, in my opinion. This just goes to show that Gainax knows how to make good comedy. Directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi is the story of Sasshi and Arumi; neighbors and childhood friends who are soon to be separated when Arumi moves with her family to Hokkaido. Ubuntu 7.10 - Only 10 more days!
2007-10-08 12:18:39
It’s already been 6 months since the last release–time flies in the Linux community. Ubuntu , in 10 days, will reach it’s 7.10 milestone, introducing a boat load of updates. Most notably, in my opinion is NTFS-3g support. Finally, I can use my Windows external drive interchangeably and actually be able to write to it with Ubuntu! There’s plenty of great updates making this a very worthwhile download for you readers that want the stability and security of Linux with the ease of access of a Mac. (more…)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is fantastic.
2007-10-07 11:24:01
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is an artfully crafted piece of recent Anime history. The story is a well-written web of events based on the idea that the main character gains the ability to jump through time, so she tries to use this ability to make the world “better”. Throughout the events she changes she learns that when something is better for one person it’s usually worse for another. Time is not something to be messed with, even if on very minor levels. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep - A glimpse into the futu…err…past.
2007-10-20 21:26:06
It’s rumored that the extra video in the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix is a trailer of the next Kingdom Hearts game, Birth By Sleep for the PSP. This rumor actually has some strong backing based on the various details revealed at the Tokyo Game Show. Plot Synopsis quoted from Wikipedia: Birth by Sleep focuses on the story of Keyblade masters before Sora from the original Kingdom Hearts game and is a prequel, taking place ten years before the original Kingdom Hearts. Nomura has stated that though there are three scenarios, there is not one singularly important scenario or character, but that the main theme is Ven’s identity. It is also believed to be connected to the unlockable trailers at the end of Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. The story revolves around three Keyblade apprentices in search of a missing Keyblade master, Master Xehanort, and his apprentice. Their disappearance foreshadows a great disaster. The game will take place entirel

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai - Don’t watch the sequel first, like me. >.>
2007-10-19 18:03:26
So, I started watch ing Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai–I got through the first five episodes before figuring out that there was another season that came before this. Oops. Now I’ll have to go back and watch the previous season. It started out all light-hearted and then suddenly everyone was dead. I was a little confused when I looked it up a little further online to find stuff to write about on here and saw all these screenshots from what was apparently the real first five episodes and I didn’t recognize any of it. Why must animes have different names for different seasons? It’s confusing that way. >.> (more…)

School Days - Narutaru if it we’re a romance.
2007-10-18 14:51:27
School Days was a very entertaining high-school life kind of show for about the first ten episodes, then everything went bad. Not in the sense that it sucked, but in the sense that the love was dead. The last two episodes were dark and violent, especially much the final episode. School Days was very much like Narutaru in that regard in that the story completely shifted to a dark and violent finale. I kind of expected it because of what I had heard about School Days reading about it on the internet, but I didn’t know exactly what was going to happen. (more…)

Nerd Culture v2.0 - A whole new look!
2007-10-17 18:14:23
I really started to dislike some aspects of the former layout, so I decided Nerd Culture needed an upgrade. I like this one much more than the last one, it should do great for awhile yet. If anyone has any thoughts or opinions on the new layout feel free to leave a comment. I’m always open on ideas for new features or designs.

Seto No Hanayome EP 01-05 - Absurd and hilarious, an excellent comedy!
2007-10-17 16:44:32
Gonzo has once again brought us a truly epic comedy with their new series, Seto No Hanayome. So far I’ve watched the first 5 episodes and it’s definitely the best show currently on my watch list. It’s a very absurd, slapstick comedy, giving it a fast-pace that just about anyone can enjoy. You certainly won’t be bored watching this piece of comedy gold! (more…)

ef: a tale of memories - A great eroge conversion.
2007-10-16 19:44:59
Directed by , ef is a recent anime conversion of an eroge game know as ef: a fairy tale of the two. So far the Prologue and first 2 episodes have looked quite promising. This show is definitely on my watch list, Shaft did quite well on the art for this–everything is very vivid and colorful. The character designs are very well done and unique looking, with interesting personalities to match their interesting appearances. The story hasn’t gotten rolling too much yet, but what I’ve seen of it has been quite good, albeit not really anything new for the genre. (more…)

Polls, Polls, Polls!
2007-10-24 16:46:23
New feature! Nerd Culture now has polls, so I can ask you all sorts of useless questions with every post I make, including such questions as What Would Jesus Do? (Optionally, for you Pastafarians; What Would The Flying Spaghetti Monster Do?), Why Am I So Bald? and What Has Science Done? Seriously though, I plan to make great use of these polls to try and figure out exactly what it is my fellow nerds want to know about. I’m always working to make Nerd Culture better and this is just one more step toward greatness. Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.
