Why Ryanair is here to stay
2007-09-21 13:15:28
It’s an accepted fact that the North West coast of Sardinian and in particular the Alghero area have significantly benefited since the arrival of low cost airline Ryanair back in the year 2000. Single handedly Ryanair marketed the beautiful island of Sardinian to the rest of Europe and in doing so Alghero’s economy has boomed. Here are some astonishing facts: 1. In the year 1999 less than 590,000 passengers passed through Alghero Airport. We expect to see 1,300,000 passengers this year up 21% on 2006. 2. In 1999 over 80% of passengers were Italian nationals. In 2007 we expect to see international passengers to account for more than 60% of total passengers. 3. Since 2000 Ryanair have been responsible for the employment of over 400 Sardinians directly and countless thousands more indirectly in the growing hotel and catering tourism industry. The Alghero Estates team are often asked our opinion on the Ryanair factor and if they will continue flying to Alghero for the mid to

Real Estate guide to the Sardinia luxury tax scheme
2007-09-16 16:48:52
Following a number of requests from our readers todays post is all about property taxation on the island of Sardinia. Although you have probably read in the English press about the Sardinian luxury tax there is very little information on how it directly effects the cost of real estate ownership. After researching this subject extensively for the past week I was surprised to see how difficult it was to get detailed information. So without further a do here are my findings and hopefully it will give you the information you have been looking for. Background The introduced of the luxury taxation scheme is the brain child of Renato Soru, the centre-left President of Sardinia. The package of taxes which have been in effect since 2006 include second homes, private yachts (over 14 meters) and private aircraft. Mr Soru has been quoted as saying “all we are asking for is a modest contribution by those who enjoy Sardinia’s natural beauty”. Who is eligible to pay the luxury tax?

The managing director of Alghero International airport Umberto Borlotti has presented a short term expansion strategy which has been approved by all of the political shareholders including the Council of Alghero (Comune di Alghero), Sassari province board (Provincia di Sassari) and the Sardinia Region (Regione Sardegna). The major part of the airport expansion strategy is to increase the annual passenger capacity from the current 1.3 million (expected by the end of 2007) to 2 million passengers by 2010. Maria Vendone, Alghero Estates Managing Director comments “Alghero real estate prices have been influenced by multiple factors in the past year. Although the price of houses and land has increased the volume of sales has actually r

Alghero tourism hits an all time high
2007-08-02 16:50:46
Alghero airport today announced record month on month passenger figures for June and July. At today’s press announcement passenger figures raised year on year by 14% to 155,169 compared to July 2006 when 135,747 passengers passed through the airport. 2007’s increase was due to additional routes from low cost airline Ryan air and the arrival of new airline Germanwings which operates flights to Cologne Bonn. This announcement comes on the back of traffic figures for the month of June up 18% to 138,458 on the previous year. The following comparison chart show year on year passenger numbers for the first 7 months of 2007. Perhaps the real story though is where the passengers are arriving from. 2007 has seen the first decline in national passenger arrivals from mainland Italy. Flight prices are expected to be a major factor in the decrease with Ryan air unable to operate flights to Rome due to airport capacity restrictions at Ciampino airport. This decline could however balance out

Alghero airport receives multimillion euro investment
2007-10-09 17:20:49
The past week has been one to remember for the directors of Sogeaal the committee board responsible for the management of Alghero International airport . Only a few days ago the Sardinian region announced the release of 42 million euro for the exclusive use by Alghero airport. The funds were previously agreed by the region but have only recently become available. 12 million euro will be spent to cover previous investment expenses with the remaining 30 million euro to invest in service improvements and further expansion. If that wasn’t good enough today the region open the war chest again announcing a further 3.4 million euros to Alghero airport for the sole purpose of promoting the North West of Sardinia and increasing foreign passenger traffic. In the same announcement a 2.2 million euro investment was given to both Olbia airport on the East coast and Cagliari airport in the South. The funding has been in response to the successful increase in tourism to the island via the airp

What’s going on in Alghero?
2007-10-16 16:54:37
Is it me or have I missed something? Over the past couple of weeks reading through the local newspapers and online community websites there has been much reported on individual investments events such as cash for a new hospital and health care services, more cash for the airport and the recent visits from billionaire real estate investors Aga Kharn and Tom Barrack. Add all this together and you get nearly 100 million euros of regional investment and the original architect and the current chief of the famous Costa Smeralda both taking a serious look at Alghero’s potential. None of the local journalists seem to be putting all of this together and asking the obvious question. What’s going on? For sure Alghero is now in a situation of needing some serious commercial investment in tourist infrastructure such as hotels and golf courses to meet the increasing numbers and demands of foreign tourists visiting Alghero. I get the feeling that the events of the past few weeks could b

You can read the full article here which gives a journalistic view on what Alghero has to offer. The Alghero Estates team would like to thank Nick and the Financial Times for publishing such a great article.
