In the words of the dearly departed
2007-10-03 04:29:29
Ric Suggitt: Radical, rebel-rouser, purveyor of national stereotypes! Whoopee doo. We now know the identity of the World Cup quarter-finalists. But France seems a sadder place for the loss of the twelve sides that fell at the first hurdle. They gave their all, played with passion and scored some wonderful tries. So let’s hear it for the so-called ‘minnows’ - the likes of the Portuguese, the Namibians, the Welsh and the Irish. What’s more, they were as entertaining off the pitch as they were with ball in hand. Whilst the big boys droned on about taking it “game by game, one day at a time”, the tournament’s real entertainers had all the sad hacks in stitches with their take on life at the cutting edge of world rugby. Speculation grows over Inzamam’s future
2007-10-03 04:26:27
Will he? Won’t he? Reports are yet to confirm whether Inzamam will quit Tests soon © AFP Speculation over the future of Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan captain, is mounting with some reports claiming he is set to retire from Test cricket after playing in the second Test in Lahore against South Africa. Geo TV and Jang, the Urdu-language daily, both reported that Inzamam had reached an agreement with the Pakistan Cricket Board which would see the batsman play one last Test at home before bowing out - unlike many ex-cricketers in Pakistan - with some grace and dignity. None of these reports, however, have quoted Inzamam directly. (Read the full post about ‘Speculation grows over Inzamam’s future’…)

Milton warns of Bulls’ rolling ’surprise’
2007-10-03 04:24:31
Cliffie Milton - Onwards and upwards Lock Cliffie Milton has warned the Free State Cheetahs that the Blue Bulls’ much-vaunted rolling maul should not be underestimated when the two sides meet in a crucial Absa Currie Cup clash in Pretoria on Friday night. The Bulls, who shared the Currie Cup with the Cheetahs last season, are not yet assured of a semi-final place this year as Western Province have an outside chance of overhauling them (they need to make up a points difference of 104). However, a Bulls loss to the previously unbeaten Cheetahs could also see the Lions leap-frog them into third position. (Read the full post about ‘Milton warns of Bulls’ rolling ’surprise”…)

We deserved it - Ferguson
2007-10-03 04:13:13
The win, courtesy of Wayne Rooney’s brilliant 70th-minute goal, his first of the season, puts United clear at the top of their pool, and well on the way to Ferguson’s 10-point target which he believes will seal qualification for the last 16. Their second straight win was far from a straightforward affair though, and Roma spurned a string of chances before and after Rooney struck. But Ferguson refused to countenance the idea that his side had been fortunate this time around against a team they thumped 7-1 at Old Trafford in the second leg of last season’s quarter-finals. “I’m pleased with the result, it’s a fair result, we controlled most of the match, carried a little bit of luck towards the end when they started to risk to play for an equaliser,” he insisted. Ex Pacific Islands RWC XV
2007-10-03 04:07:28
One of our readers has taken us to task for producing only a Tri-Nations of Ex XVs from players at the World Cup who were born in one region and playing in another. We stand accused of doing the same thing as the SANZAR Tri-Nations which has been exhorted to expand to include Argentina and/or the Pacific Islands . We have, unlike SANZAR, succumbed to pressure and are now going to produce an Ex Pacific Islands XV. We are going to use the Pacific Islands in the same way that the International Rugby Board does and exclude New Zealand though New Zealand is made up of islands in the Pacific. Wenger happy with cool Gunners
2007-10-03 04:05:20
The Premier League leaders had the better of possession all night against a side who had never before lost to English opposition in Europe. That record, though, was always going to be severely tested by Wenger ’s men, who continue to go from strength to strength. After seeing Cesc Fabregas blaze an early chance over the bar from close range and then surviving a brief rally by the hosts, Robin van Persie struck with 15 minutes left to ensure Arsenal’s impressive opening to the new campaign continues with a ninth straight win. Wenger said: “We decided to put pace in the game and score early, but we did not manage to do it. (Read the full post about ‘Wenger happy with cool Gunners ’…)

Lucky 13 for Mils
2007-10-03 03:58:52
Mils: Surprised at his inclusion in the thirteen jersey Team selection is never easy, and nor is the prospect of missing out on a World Cup quarter-final, especially when it is New Zealand against France. So it was hardly surprising that when All Blacks coach Graham Henry headed towards Mils Muliaina in training he awaited his arrival with trepidation and even went as far as trying to ignore him. As the first choice full-back over the past four seasons Muliaina feared he was about to be informed he would not be starting against France on Saturday. So when Henry uttered just two words to him, he was understandably delighted. Those words, “Number thirteen. (Read the full post about ‘Lucky 13 for Mils’…)

2007-10-03 03:56:21
Guy Martin ’s mastery of the Oliver’s Mount circuit at Scarborough continued at full pace at the weekend when he took a record breaking fifth successive International Gold Cup Trophy. The Kirmington star was in scintillating form all weekend taking four race wins from five starts and, in addition, he also bettered his own outright lap record and clinched the David Jefferies Trophy for the first time. Riding the Hydrex Honda’s, Guy’s first race was the opening 8-lap 600cc race and the strong crowd were treated to a brilliant race as four of the best road racers in the world – Guy, John McGuinness, Ian Lougher and Ryan Farquhar – went head to head around the 2.43-mile circuit. Smith savours Lyon triumph
2007-10-03 03:54:13
Smith ’s side made it two wins out of two in a tough Champions League Group E by defeating Les Gones 3-0 with a sensational performance at the Stade Gerland. Lee McCulloch opened the scoring with a bullet header, with Daniel Cousin and DaMarcus Beasley adding the others in the first 10 minutes of the second half. It gives Rangers a genuine chance of progressing to the knockout stages - they beat Stuttgart 2-1 in their opener at Ibrox a fortnight ago - and Smith admitted he could not have asked for any more from his men. “I think it’s probably our biggest (European) result in terms of the number of goals we scored away for home,” he said. Andrew: Faith restored in English game
2007-10-14 15:22:58
Rob Andrew admitted England had “rewritten the rules” after reaching the World Cup final despite three years of upheaval and just 10 months of dedicated planning. Andrew is England’s director of elite rugby and the man charged with installing the systems and the structures for long-term success. The accepted approach was that potential world champions needed to build towards the tournament for at least four years, if not longer. Sir Clive Woodward’s preparations for England’s 2003 triumph were seen as the blueprint. New Zealand planned meticulously for the World Cup and had been the best team on the planet for the last three years. In 2005 they won the Lions series 3-0 and then embarked on a Grand Slam tour. 2007-10-14 15:12:44
Steve Davis beat Walsall qualifier Mark Joyce 4-3 to retain a slim chance of reaching the last 16 of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix in Aberdeen. The ex-world champion now has two wins and one loss from his group matches, and is still to play Ronnie O’Sullivan and Leicester qualifier Tom Ford. Davis admitted: “Unless a miracle happens, I’d imagine I’m out.” O’Sullivan notched breaks of 99, 72 and 95 as he demolished Dominic Dale 4-0 to move a step closer to the next round. Cockerill unimpressed by referee Rose
2007-10-14 15:03:14
Leicester’s Richard Cockerill blamed referee David Rose for preventing the Tigers from completing a match-saving counter-attack in the Guinness Premiership match at Vicarage Road. Tries from Kris Chesney and Adam Powell appeared to have sealed the 26-19 victory for Saracens after Richard Haughton touched down in the first-half with Glen Jackson adding a conversion and three penalties. Leicester got over the line twice - when Jordan Crane and Boris Stankovich scored from lineout drives - with recalled fly-half Paul Burke adding three penalties. But with the 80 minutes up and trailing by seven points, the Tigers launched a counter-attack from deep that saw Ireland full-back Geordan Murphy reach the halfway line before hitting Rose with his attempted pass out of a tackle. STR react with disappointment
2007-10-14 15:02:42
Toro Rosso are disappointed with the FIA Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold Tonio Liuzzi’s time penalty for overtaking Adrian Sutil under yellow flags. The 25 second time penalty cost the Italian driver eighth place in the Japanese Grand Prix. The Faenza-based team showed great promise at the Fuji Speedway only for Liuzzi to be docked his point. Team-mate Sebastian Vettel collided with Mark Webber while on for a possible podium to complete a miserable Sunday. And the team’s appeal against the Italian driver’s penalty was turned down in a Paris hearing on Saturday. “Obviously we are disappointed, but we accept the decision of the court,” Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost told Autosport. Webber: ‘We’ll keep chipping away’
2007-10-14 14:48:21
Mark Webber has lauded Red Bull’s progress in recent weeks but cautioned that there is a long way to go. Although the Anglo-Austrian constructor missed out on a bumper points haul in Japan and China, the team have started to show its potential. The Australian driver explained that the test session in Spain before the final leg of the season unlocked the secret to getting the best out of the Adrian Newey designed RB3. “Yeah, the Jerez test was quite encouraging for us because we changed the car a little it, but not a huge amount,” the 31-year-old told autosport.com. “There have been months during the mid-season where we’ve known that we wanted to try to address things that we wanted to do differently, and we’ve got those on the car, which is better for us. Hill blasts ‘ugly’ win
2007-10-14 14:42:59
Bristol may have secured their second Guinness Premiership win of the season with a 23-16 home victory over Newcastle but head coach Richard Hill was far from happy with his side’s performance. Bristol’s forwards ensured a deserved win capped by tries from Alfie To’oala and Brian O’Riordan. However, a scathing Hill said: “You have to be pleased with back-to-back home wins but the performance was very poor again. It was a bit like England have done - winning ugly is what it is called. “One or two individual performances were good but as a team at the moment we are just not functioning properly, apart from the scrum, which has been the highlight of our season. Brundle bemoans Hamilton’s own goal
2007-10-14 14:33:34
Martin Brundle claims that Lewis Hamilton ’s ‘win at all costs’ strategy has hampered his bid to win the World Championship. The former McLaren driver admits that he found the rookie’s gung-ho attitude at the Chinese Grand Prix disconcerting because there was no need for Hamilton to take risks. “I was nervous about (his) Chinese grand prix weekend from the moment I heard him say he wasn’t going to be playing the percentage game,” Brundle wrote in his column in The Times. “He led the Drivers’ Championship by 12 points with just two rounds to go - basically standing in the mouth of an open goal - and he was talking about winning the race”. Flood pays tribute to mate Noon
2007-10-14 14:30:57
Toby Flood refused to join in England’s lap of honour after they had reached the World Cup final as a tribute to his Newcastle team-mate Jamie Noon. Flood played a crucial role when he came on for centre Mike Catt in the second half of England’s 14-9 victory, joining wing Paul Sackey in a morale-boosting tackle on French talisman Sebastien Chabal. But at the final whistle, while others celebrated around him, Flood held his euphoria in check as a gesture of respect for Noon, who was forced to return home with a knee injury. It allowed Flood to fly out as replacement and he explained: “I’m trying to hold back. I’ve really mixed feelings when it comes to Jamie. No distractions for Lewis
2007-10-14 14:29:51
Lewis Hamilton has shunned the party scene and given a number of his friends the cold shoulder this week as he focuses on securing the Formula One World Championship at Interlagos. Hamilton has been determined to avoid all potential distractions these past few days ahead of next weekend’s title-deciding showdown in the Brazilian Grand Prix. As far as Hamilton is concerned, what happened in China a week ago is now firmly in the past, and all that matters is the clash with McLaren rival Fernando Alonso and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen at the Sao Paulo circuit of Interlagos. After sliding into the gravel at Shanghai on severely-worn tyres, so blowing his initial crack at becoming the first rookie to win the title, Hamilton has a four-point lead over Alonso, with Raikkonen a further three adrift.
