Golf Book Review - Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Dr. Bob Rotella

I bought this book when it came out at the bookstores long times ago. (I think about 10 years ago or so…)
Anyways, this is one of the best books on golf psychology that I’ve seen in my lifetime. Although Dr. Bob Rotella isn’t a pro-golfer, he does case a lot of scenarios with other pro-golfers such as Tom Kite among many other pro-golfers to show you the mental side of playing golf.

Golf Book Review - John Daly’s Grip and Rip It

John Daly is probably one of my favorite golfers of all time. His swing is somethin’ If you read his book, “Grip It and Rip It”, you will find that he does a lot of things that you don’t expect him to.
For example, John Daly does have one of the longest swings ever BUT he does has one of the best rhythms in golf. You don’t realize how great his rhythm is because all you are focusing on is his long swing and his distance. But look at his swing carefully and you will see a little Freddy Couples in him.
Even, Tiger’s previous Coach Butch Harmon, quotes John Daly in his book, Four Cornerstones of Winning Golf (By the way, THIS book, is way too cool…).
I used to try to copy his swing during one of my golf years and was pretty successful at it. I remember when I would read his book over and over again until couple pages decided to take lives of its own and take off somewhere in my bedroom…

Golf Book Review - Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book

Having spent more than 18 years playing golf, I’ve read a lot of golf books. (Actually, I think I read more than 95% of them, at least what’s on the bookstands..)
Anyways, I figured I could start recommending a few if you want to become a better golfer.

Penick is the teacher of the two famous golfers, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw.
In this little book, you will learn a lot about how to “play” the game, not just hit balls.
There’s a lot of analogy between Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw in this book.
For instance, one time Tom Kite was practicing too much so Harvey told him to go play with 3 golf balls on the golf course instead.
There’s a little bit of this here and there that will tremendously help you understand that golf is not just hitting the ball. You can learn a lot of golf psychology from this little book. Although I personally don’t think Harvey’s swing mechanics are upto par, golf isn’t about swing mechanics so this shou

No, this isn’t 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Although I read that book and honestly I think it’s bunch of crap but don’t shoot me for my opinions. We can settle it on the golf course. Well I take it a back, I own both Stephen Covey’s book and tapes so I am at the same time a fan. (But it has not helped my life, at least not yet)
The only book that has really helped my life (my swing) are… well… let me get into that next time, the list is like more than 100 books so…

I love Fred Couple’s swing. He probably has the most relaxed swing with such a fluid swing rhythm you can describe simple only as, “butter”.
He’s rhythm is the thing to copy. If you can watch his swing everyday and copy his rhythm, it will definitely help you.

This is kinda funny that pro-golfers have to use steroids!?! Well, I’d let them use it since steroids probably messes up your game more than it helps especially under those high pressure situations where you gotta sink a 2-footer to win. How’s steroid going to help you in that case? Maybe you will hit it with more confidence? LOL

On the same day that American Floyd Landis was banned for doping and stripped of his 2006 Tour de France Title, several golf organizations signed an anti-doping policy. Check out this trick shot you can play from your knees when your ball is close to the bunker lip and it’s hard for you to balance yourself. I haven’t tried this but it does “seem” like a good sand trick shot.
Your knees and shins give you plenty of ground support, so don’t be afraid to make an aggressive swing (flare both feet out for an even wider base). Keep your rear end and your back straight, and try to hold this position as you swing the club back and through. Don’t pick the club up — get your shoulders moving as well as your arms.
The biggest mistake you can make is bending over too much. That makes it easy to lose your balance. Use your butt as ballast to keep your posture tall and your swing in control.

Today’s Swing Keys

Today, I hit the ball like crazy. I mean, I hit the ball so good, it was like cheese melting in my mouth. I hit the ball so good maybe it was even better than sex.
Anyways, here’s my swing thoughts for the day:
On the backswing, really feel the large muscles of your shoulders turn automatically since your hand pressure is so light.
On the downswing, try to really get your shoulders and belly to turn in sync and swing slightly inside out while trying to hold your body straight.
Confusing?
Try this for beginners:
1. Grip the club very light.
2. Feel your large muscles turning on the backswing.
3. Feel like you are holding a basketball and doing a two handed pass on the downswing.
4. Move your lower body and belly at the same speed as your shoulders.
5. Use your lower body and shoulders to hit the ball, not arms or hands.

Here’s the swing keys for today on video:
1. Really feel the shoulders and large muscles do the work on your backswing. What do I mean? You can only feel this is your grip is very very light. In other words, grip light and try to feel your left shoulder turn on the backswing.
2. On the downswing, really try to feel that your stomach is controlling the arms and the hands.
P.S. I didn’t hit a good shot on the video but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a good swing key. So go ahead and try it next time you are on the range, not on the course.
On the course, you should play to score, never try to fix your swing on the golf course. If you are hitting it left consistently on the course, don’t fix your swing, simply aim more right. This might be the best lesson for today.
