Haunted Places I've Been | The Winchester Mystery House 2007-10-20 16:09:00 Our story begins in September 1839 with the birth of a baby girl to Leonard and Sarah Pardee of New Haven, Connecticut. The baby’s name was also Sarah and as she reached maturity, she became the belle of the city. She was well-received at all social events, thanks to her musical skills, her fluency in various foreign languages and her sparkling charm. Her beauty was also well-known by the young men about town, despite her diminutive size. Although she was petite and stood only four feet, ten inches, she made up for this in personality and loveliness. At the same time that Sarah was growing up, a young man was also maturing in another prominent New Haven family. [ There have been footsteps; banging doors; mysterious voices; windows that bang so hard they shatter; cold spots; strange moving lights; doorknobs that turn by themselves.... ] The young man’s name was William Wirt Winchester and he was the son of Oliver Winchester, a shirt manufacturer and businessman. In 1857, he took ove Read more: Haunted

Undiagnosed Brain Injury: 2007-10-28 16:37:00 The Hidden Legacy of IraqMoD begins study amid fears that up to 20,000 soldiers may be affected.By Matthew Taylor and Esther Addley, GuardianThe Ministry of Defence is conducting a major study into brain injury in troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan amid fears that thousands of soldiers may have suffered damage after being exposed to high-velocity explosions. The US army says as many as 20% of its soldiers and marines have suffered "mild traumatic brain injury" (mTBI) from blows to the head or shockwaves caused by explosions. The condition, which can lead to memory loss, depression and anxiety, has been designated as one of four "signature injuries" of the Iraq conflict by the US department of defence, which is introducing a large-scale screening programme for troops returning from the frontline.Defence officials were reluctant to extrapolate directly from the US experience, arguing that the science is still inconclusive and that the US and UK experience in Iraq and Afghanistan h Read more: Brain

Montezuma Castle National Monument 2007-10-26 15:27:00 Montezuma Castle
is one of a number of well-preserved ancient dwellings in north central Arizona, including the Wupatki, Tonto, Walnut Canyon, and Tuzigoot national monuments. It is probably the most spectacular; an imposing 20 room, 5-storey structure built into a recess in a white limestone cliff about 70 feet above the ground. When first (re)discovered the ruins were thought to be Aztec in origin, hence the name bestowed on them by early explorers, but they are now known to belong to the Sinagua Indian peoples who farmed the surrounding land between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, before abandoning the area. The National
Monument
: The castle is just two miles from I-17 (exit 289; north Camp Verde) at the end of a side road that winds across flat scrubland and down into the valley formed by Beaver Creek - a small stream, but a reliable source of water all year round and hence a good locality for the Sinagua to establish a home. Today there is a visitor center with a small museum
Time to Fly 2007-10-26 13:16:00 I just woke up...it's already time to go?That's exactly what it was like for me. I had such "memory holes" that it felt as if I just woke up and my boys were doing their own thing I had more memories of when they were small strangely enough. At the same time we were starting our new life here in Arizona, our oldest son had recently graduated high school and he had met a girl right before we moved. So as it was, he didn't stay in the beginning. He felt it was time for him to fly. He went back to California. It was very difficult for me.My husband has told me that before my accident I had talked about our boys getting older, and how it would be. I suppose at the time I was thinking of things differently because he confessed that I had talked about being ready for it. For the boys to be on there own and us to have our time. Now I am very mixed, It was hard when my oldest boy left. I want them to have their space, to be on their own and have things the way they want. But I'm also glad th
Tombstone, Arizona 2007-10-30 11:54:00 The Townsite of Tombstone
(a name invented by Edward Schieffelin - see story below) was laid out on March 5, 1879. At that time Tombstone had 40 cabins and 100 people. Allen Streets lots sold for $5. By June 20, 1880 there were 3,000 people in the town and by late 1881 there was over 7,000 people in town and more gambling houses, saloons, and a larger "boothill" and "red light" district than any town in the southwest. Population increased rapidly from that time, and in the 1890's it had reached a maximum of 15,000. Let's get back to how it all started...The Story of Edward SchieffelinTombstone erupted into a boom town when Arizona
was Apache Land. Geronimo, Victorio, and Nachez led their fierce warriors in raids the length and width of Southern Arizona. Few white men penetrated this barren, land and returned to tell of it.In 1877, a prospector by the name of Lewis wandered into the dry washes, coming down out of the Tombstone Hills into San Pedro Valley. He discovered several pieces
I'm Sick 2007-11-08 09:04:00 Well I had a lot of plans for this month, however now I know why I have been feeling in low gear lately. I'm sick. I have the Queen Mother of all head colds. It's actually quite a new sensory experience to have a head cold, added to a brain injury. My tinnitus is at full speed today and I feel like my head is in a vice. So this is a short post and I am afraid while I'm sick my posts will be lite.I hope everyone will please keep an open mind about gifts from my ArizonaEarthshines.com site. All orders include FREE SHIPPING through the Holidays.I need to send out a few more things and then to bed I go.I hate being sick. I'm sitting here though realizing it's not like before my accident. I used to have to drag myself to work if I were sick. Sit there all day and make it happen no matter how bad I felt. Well I have set up my whole website and blog as if it were a job with schedules and all. I think it's my way of feeling productive. However this morning I realize, I don't have to do

Taking a Vacation? 2007-11-06 15:15:00 Well since Halloween is over, I thought I should at least post that I have given myself a vacation since November 1st. I have been on the computer so much I need to give my brain a rest. So that is what I am doing, while preparing my Christmas advertising, I am taking it easy. It is not something I have a choice about really. Like right now. I have done some ad placing, some surfing for ad credits and have plans for November almost completed. The more I think the more I wear myself out. So, I thought I would be able to write about some things that are on my mind. But right this minute is a good example of how my TBI limits me. I have to stop. More Tomorrow!Just a reminder though...ArizonaEarthshines.com Read more: Taking

My mind feels wrong 2007-11-15 12:33:00 I am slowly getting over being sick. Very slowly. It really has gotten me down physically, this head and chest cold I've had. I have also been challenged with an array of emotions. My brain injury does that to me from time to time but I think it has been a combination of that and being sick? I don't really know.I believe I go through periods when I'm still learning to adjust, and I just plain have a crappy time with it. I want to walk. I want to drive. I want to quit feeling like I could cry for an hour.I don't feel right. I am going to have to break away from my schedule and just continue to take a little more time. I think I'm having some personal issues I just don't know how to talk about here. Especially when I don't know if anyone even cares if I'm posting on a blog or not.I don't think anyone I know reads it, I don't really have any friends anymore except online. I don't know if my family does.My mind just feels wrong right now. I hate having this brain injury. I'm we

San Xavier Mission 2007-11-24 13:44:00 The San Xavier del Bac Mission
is located just off of Interstate-19 at Exit 92, on the San Xavier Indian Reservation, 6 miles south of Interstate-10 in Tucson. Catholic services are held every Sunday and are open to the public. It is one of the oldest and most well preserved missions in the southwest.By Danielle CrounseEntertainment MagazineMission San Xavier del Bac is a Catholic church founded by a Jesuit priest, Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, a European spreading the word of God in a new land in 1692.While traveling to what is now known as California, Kino found a Pima Indian village near a stream bed ("Bac" means "where a stream emerges") in the Sonoran Desert. He stopped and preached to the people who were receptive to his teachings. Father Kino did not stay in this location, but visited it often during his travels. From 1692 through 1782 various priests took charge of the church and either visited regularly or were commissioned there. The services took place in a different churc
strange month 2007-11-30 09:31:00 Well, I didn't fall off the face of the earth, I'm back.I've had a strange month this November. I had plans and a schedule for my blog that I put on the back burner. I've been pretty sick for one thing, a real bad head and chest cold that has kept me in bed sometimes, and other times I'd feel a little better. Even when I felt better though, I just didn't want to right about anything. I have already opened up my own personal pity party to the world or bloggers or whoever reads...my brain injury blog. I just didn't feel like righting anything while I was "feeling" bad in yet another way.I started another blog during the times I have felt up to it. It's about other things that mean something to me and affect me. I don't expect it to be well received by everyone, but I am who I am. I've always tried to be a good human. My husband and I have always used that term to refer to people we thought were just generally a good person, good to others, does the right thing. We've alway fel
This year, the holidays came a little early for IAVA. 2007-12-13 13:24:00 Dear Shelley,This year, the holidays came a little
early for IAVA.The Senate and the House of Representatives have just agreed on a final version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2008, and its provisions make this bill one of the single biggest advances on veterans' issues in years. Here are some of the highlights, on issues that you have helped to make a national priority:Extension of VA Health Care Eligibility: After discharge, today's veterans had only two years to seek VA care or risk losing access for good. But many service-connected conditions can worsen over time, or take more than two years to become obvious - including Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Thanks to the NDAA, today's veterans now have 5 years to seek care from the VA. Pre- and Post-deployment Screenings for Traumatic Brain Injury: The care provided for those suffering from the signature wound of the Iraq war is still woefully inadequate, and this is a big

Talks Vilayanur Ramachandran: 2007-12-10 11:35:00 A journey to the center of your mindIn a wide-ranging talk, Vilayanur Ramachandran explores how brain damage can reveal the connection between the internal structures of the brain and the corresponding functions of the mind. He talks about phantom limb pain, synesthesia (when people hear color or smell sounds), and the Capgras delusion, when brain-damaged people believe their closest friends and family have been replaced with imposters...(read more)______________________________________________ArizonaEarthshines.com
2007-12-20 15:00:00 Dear Shelley,What a year. In 2007, IAVA grew faster and accomplished more than ever before. People like you continue to demonstrate that they're committed to making sure our veterans get a fair deal, and the support we've received has been inspiring.Small donations from supporters like you have added up, and we're two-thirds of the way to our year-end fundraising goal. Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution today. Now, as this year draws to a close, I want to give you a very quick look into just two of the many initiatives IAVA has planned for early 2008.IAVA Issue ReportsAs one of our supporters, you know a lot more about the issues facing veterans than most people. Unfortunately, many Americans still don't know much about PTSD, or Traumatic Brain Injuries. One of our main goals has always been to help educate the public about these issues, and in 2008 we're taking a major step towards doing just that.In January we will officially release the IAVA Issue Reports - aut

My secret 2007-12-14 15:02:00 This is just one reason I support Ron Paul. He agrees that you can't legislate your own morality. Every person has different needs. I would never hurt another living creature, I feel that I'm a good person. I am a Traumatic Brain Injury survivor. I suffer ever day as a result of the residual effects from my injury. I was offered no relief of any kind by my neurologist. There was nothing he could do. So, I have turned to marijuana which I gave up years ago when I was younger. I was not looking to be a "stoner", not at this time in my life. However, I had an opportunity and in desperation, I tried it. I was amazed and still am. It is the only thing that makes the way I feel day-to-day bearable.I have post traumatic epilepsy. Marijuana has been studied and proven to help with seizures. I also have depression due to my very changed life, again extensively studied to provide help for depression, anxiety, sleep problems. I have tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears, and I do mean const
