Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), three searchers out of four searchers in China use Baidu
as their primary search engine. This represent over 10% growth over last year results (62%). According to the same report, Google share has also changed by about 10% but on the red side, sharply decreasing from 25.3% to 14.3% over a one year period.
Below are some of the key statistics from the report:

Baidu into online gaming? 2007-09-16 20:36:49 According to some insider,s Baidu
may soon enter the fast-growing online
gaming market, with the founder of one of the leading online game sites joining the company recently.
If that was to happen, Baidu could leverage its leading position in search and the Internet market in general to pose a threat to current market leaders, if it can release games that could match what is already available.

Baidu to sell video ads 2007-08-26 21:20:38 Baidu has started selling video
advertisement through its network of 150,000 partner sites in China. The new service basically will promote floating, embedded or inserted video ads through those partners websites. The official name is Baidu TV and it will provide three additional services: video business card, business video hosting and search video (similar to Google Adwords’ video ads format).
At this point we do not know exactly how many of sites will be involved in this new scheme, the conditions these sites have to meet, or the profit-sharing terms.
Probably a move to remind Google China, who has been very active recently through acquisitions and new products launching, of who is the real “LaoDa” in the Chinese search market.

Sinovantage now offering hosting services: SinoHosting.net 2007-10-13 13:20:30 After weeks of preparation, our new site www.sinohosting.net is now up and running. The decision to enter the web hosting arena has been fostered by what we consider to be the lack of quality web hosting firms in Shanghai offering
international hosting solutions to local and foreign-owned or oriented firms, and the growing demand for companies based in China with international background (English support, foreign currencies payment etc.) to assist international firms for their Chinese hosting needs.
The new site will also complement nicely our existing SEO service, as many of our clients have been considering web hosting alternatives or new domain names acquisitions to protect their brands or to expand to new business lines.
SinoHosting.net currently offers web hosting with four choices of server location: mainland China (Shanghai, Shenzhen), Singapore, UK and the US. We plan to add Hong Kong and perhaps Beijing in a very near future. Other services include corporate email hosting (bus
Google leads Baidu in mobile search in China 2007-10-11 02:51:59 According to a report from Xinhua news agency, Baidu
trails Google
when it comes to mobile search in the middle Kingdom.
That’s one of the rare areas where Google has established its predominance in China
, a market where its reach beyond first tier cities is pretty limited and one of the few countries in the world where the global leader finds itself in an underdog position (in this case, No2 behind Baidu). Google’s position in mobile search is certainly due to the company’s deal with the major telephony operator China Mobile, while Baidu has so far been in partnership with handset manufacturers only (Nokia).
Mobile search is believed to have a bright future in China, which boosts 5.5 million wireless internet users, of which 4.43 actively use mobile services. But the true potential of this market will not be fully unleashed before the authorities make a final decision regarding the controversial 3G standards.

Yahoo Search Marketing to roll up changes in its ranking model in Hong Kong 2007-10-18 10:13:55 Excerpt from an email received from the Yahoo
! SearchMarketing
team in Hong Kong
Dear advertiser,
Bid amount and Ad Quality will determine an ad’s rank in search result beginning 24 October, 2007
Yahoo! Search Marketing is going to introduce a new ranking model
that considers an ad’s quality and bid amount. The new model is designed to help you spend less time in bidding wars and more time creating the most relevant, effective ads, which can drive better results for your business.
Here is a quick summary of this important change:
-Both bid amount and ad quality will determine an ad’s rank in search results beginning 24 October, 2007
-Each ad will have a quality index score, displayed as 1 to 5 bars, that reflects the ad’s quality
-High quality ads will benefit from a better position when compare with other ads with the same bid price.

New domain name for Google in China: G.cn 2007-11-05 03:43:20 Google China
says the new domain
will make it easier for Chinese users to remember and use its search engine. This move is probably part of the global search engine giant continuous effort to play a major role in the mobile search industry. Difficult to say at this point whether this will have any impact at all when it comes to help the company’s gain market share from Baidu in overall search.
Will any competitor follow up by using a short domain in China? We won’t be surprised to see a b.cn or similar move in the near future…
G.cn is currently redirecting to Google China homepage, Google.cn

Using sub-domains to take advantage of the new Google Geographic Targeting Tool in China 2007-11-12 03:39:31 Google Webmaster Tools (formerly known as Google Sitemaps) has seen recently the introduction of “Geograhic Targeting
” in the tools it offers to webmasters. Essentially, it allows webmasters to inform Google of which country they target, by selecting this country in their account. Country domain specific TLDs (such as .cn, .ca, .co.uk etc.) will be automatically set to the countries they refer to.
The problem is, in today’s global economy, many companies have a huge portion of their clients (and web visitors) from countries other than the ones they are based in. So, how can a webmaster or a company in China
capitalize on this new tool (that has the potential to help improve the ranking in the targeted country) without sacrificing current rankings achieved on the main Google searches and other countries?
One solution would be the use of sub-domains. Here is the example of our web hosting division website www.sinohosting.net ; currently in Google Webmaster Tools the sit Read more:Geographic

New Baidu service: Baidu Finance 2007-11-09 04:24:45 The Chinese search engine giant, Baidu
, has just launched a new service called Baidu Finance (百度财经).
Modeled after Google Finance, Baidu Finance offers links and information about China and Hong Kong stocks, mutual funds, bonds, trusts and other financial products. Real-time stock quotes and charts, listed companies news and more are also available. Of course, Baidu has leveraged on its web properties by linking to its user-generated contents, Baidu News and other services as well.
An English version is available, but still very basic and would need huge improvement to even come close to what is provided by Google or Yahoo.
Baidu Finance is still in beta mode. It can be accessed from the following link: stock.baidu.com
Google upgrades Site Targeting to “Placement Targeting” 2007-11-09 02:50:22 Google has made changes to its Site Targeting
feature in Adwords, by allowing advertisers to pay on a Cost-per-Click basis when choosing a site for advertising. Previously, advertisers could only pay per thousand impressions (CPM), the CPC option being available only on keywords-targeted campaigns. The name &ldquo
;Site Targeting&rdquo
; has also be changed to “Placement
Targeting”.
Site targeting campaigns have become very frustrating even for advertisers aiming at branding. Although CPM remains available in the new “Placement Targeting” model, it is clear that this model will be much avoided by smart advertisers because of its poor performance and lower cost-efficiency.
To put it simply, Placement Targeting (the CPC model) combines the best of both world: you choose the sites on which your ad appear (avoiding therefore bogus sites or MFA pages), but on the other hand, you only pay for clicks occured.
This can be very interesting for advertisers in China as well Read more:Google

Ask.com coming to China? 2007-11-24 01:31:19 InterActiveCorp (IAC)’s CEO Barry Diller has announced that the group flagship search engine, Ask.com, will enter the Chinese market within the next two years. The group plans to invest 100 million dollars in the middle kingdom expansion with the hope to become a major player in the country’s highly competitive search industry.
Ask is ranked fourth in the US (behind Google, Yahoo and Live/MSN). But if Google hasn’t been able to beat rival Baidu, while Yahoo and Microsoft are struggling with tiny yet decreasing market shares, what strategy will enable Ask to make it in China
and surpass local players lead by Baidu?
An acquisition strategy seems probable as it would be hard to imagine Ask to start from scratch. Maybe Ask would take a look at Sina’s iask.com, due to name similarities and the fact that iask (爱问 in Chinese) is already well known as a search engine in China (although not one of the top tier or even second tier engines)? iask.com results are curren

New service from Baidu: Brand Advertising Program 2007-11-29 21:10:34 A new service from Baidu
targets large corporations for increased brand awareness. The BrandAdvertisingProgram
will provide a prominent listing for advertisers, with multiple links and even graphic ads.
Gome (国美), the largest consumer electronics store and China Construction Bank (中国建设银行), one of the top 4 banks in China, have joined the program and you can expect more large players to get involved as well very soon. Financial conditions for participating into this program have not been revealed.
A search on Baidu for “建行” (”jianhang” the short-name of CCB) provides the picture below.
Baidu gets into the Chinese Firefox 2007-12-08 23:38:57 A deal has been signed by Baidu
, the leading search engine in China, and the Mozilla Foundation, owner of the Firefox
web browser. Baidu will be paying Mozilla for integrating its search tools in the Chinese
version of the Firefox browser.
Although that deal is very similar to the one Mozilla has with Google in the US, the impact is unlikely to be that important considering the tiny share Firefox hold in the Chinese browsing market (less than 2%). Things may change however if Baidu puts together some kind of promotion for the IE rival through its search properties…
163.com announces new search engine: yodao.com 2007-12-16 07:35:42 Netease (网易), mostly known for its popular web portal 163.com, has launched a new search engine, yodao.com. The NYSE-listed company said that it has taken 100 technicians and over a two and half years period to create the new search engine. The objective is to become the No1 search engine in China within a five years period, which is rather optimistic to say the least, considering that Baidu seems to have locked the top position for many years now, with Google trailing at the second place with less than a quarter of the market.
Netease has had a partnership with Google before, with Google being the search engine used on its portal. Now Yodao search bar has been prominently placed near the top of 163.com.
Considering the reach of 163.com and the company’s other internet properties, the new search engine should be in the China top 10 search engines right from the beginning, and has a shot to make the top 5 with proper development and promotion. China is bound to become the larg
