Welcome to "One Mom's View" 2007-09-30 12:23:00 Welcome to One Mom's View. I am by no means a political expert, but I am a thinker. I've been following politics, local and national, for several years, listening to both sides, and making my own decisions on what I believe.I also run a "mom-blog" called Real Life, where I deal with parenting, Christianity and life with sobriety and humor. I have restrained myself from writing on politics at Real Life because I see it as a sort of ministry. God certainly concerns Himself more with His Kingdom than ours, and that is my priority as well. My readers there may not want to get into politics or current events, and I don't want to change the format on them. I don't want to force them to sift out the content in their feed readers.Nevertheless, I do have so many thoughts on what is going on in our country and world, and I don't think it's right for all Christians to sit-out the debate either. My aim is not to change anyone's mind or argue, but just to get the ideas out there. My Read more:Welcome
Why Free National Healthcare is Never Free 2007-09-28 12:59:00 In this article, I'll explain who exactly would pay for Free National
ized Health Care (in money and freedoms), and highlight a better plan which counts on the generosity of Americans when given a choice.Contrary to popular politicians promises, government can't truly give you anything. In order provide anything, they must take it from someone else first! I am all for people giving to the needy, and I do. But I question is whether government is the best vehicle with which to do it. Consider this story I heard on the Glenn Beck radio show one morning:Three families live next to each other on a road. Citizen A (Alan) has 2 cars. citizen B (Brad) has one, and citizen C (Charlie) rides his bike to work every day. Brad sees Charlie's plight, and takes pity on him. While Alan is at work, Brad goes and gets one of his cars and gives it to Charlie. Would Alan say, "Well, I guess Charlie deserves one of my cars even though I worked really hard to earn the money to buy it."? NO! That w Read more:Healthcare
Are You Afraid to Disagree? 2007-09-27 11:00:00 Originally posted at Real Life*Special Assignment at the end of this post!*In the world of political correctness, I am afraid we are becoming a nation of yes-men (and women). Especially in the conservative and Christian segments of America. We are told that all religions are equal and valid. Yet Christians better not display their religion in public for fear of offending someone. We are sold the "pro-choice" position, but when someone speaks out for the choice of life, they are being hateful. If we want to secure our borders and keep our country safe, we are racist. We are told that political dissent is patriotic, and must listen to our leaders being called Naz*is, fasci*sts and liars. But when we speak out against the liberal political agenda, we are engaging in the politics of hate.A woman in one local mom's group to which I belong stated that she didn't believe we should be disagreeing with each other at all. 2007-09-11 08:31:00 Originally posted at Real Life...complacency.Today we remember thousands of Americans killed in the worst terrorist attack in US history. The civilians in the WTC and the heroes who fell trying to save them. I'm always torn on the anniversary of the September 11th attack on our country. I don't want to give the Islamic Terrorists one ounce of acknowledgment that will cause them to celebrate what they did to us. On the other hand, we MUST remember that we are in a war we did not start, and one we cannot stop by simply removing our presence from a particular country. I am speaking of the war AlQaeda and other groups are waging on us, whether we fight back or not. Even though the majority of Muslims do not support terrorism, there is a significant number who do. There are millions of people who want to kill anyone who does not conform to their religious view. Unless we become a Muslim country with sharia law, the extremists will not be satisfied. Independence Day 2007-07-04 08:27:00 Originally posted at Real Life. There is a great discussion in the comments over there. As we celebrate this Independence
Day, I was going to write a sappy post about what makes America so great. This truly is, as Michael Medved says, "The greatest nation on God's green earth." But I have a few thoughts that I just can't keep silent. These thoughts shouldn't be controversial, but some in this country think they are.I am reminded of the way our forefathers faught and died to be free from a truly Imperialist Empire, as England was at the time. At this time, England wasn't interested in helping our territories form our own government and set up a free, democratic (well, representative republic, anyway) society, and to protect us from foreigners who wanted to take us over. They simply wanted to rule us and reap taxes from our citizens. I'm not faulting England for this, it was the way of the world at the time. So when a totally new idea arose, we had to fight for it. And thousands die Read more:Independence Day

Doing our Homework 2007-10-02 07:31:00 The predator lurks in the shadows. Waiting. Waiting for the unsuspecting prey to make one wrong move. If he strays into the striking distance, the attack will be swift, with one goal: the destruction of the prey. The devouring of the carcass by the pack. With each kill, the predator becomes stronger and more respected among the pack. You might wonder why a scene from the grasslands of Africa shows up on a political blog. Sadly, this has too often become the scene in American politics. There are organizations set up explicitly to watch for attack opportunities, and seize upon them. The goal? To destroy the opposition, using whatever tactics necessary. It is becoming increasingly imperative to do our own homework with respect to those who are victims of these attacks. (Remember the 200 bodies in the New Orleans Superdome, reported on Oprah?)Media Matters, a so-called "watchdog group," is one of the most recent predators on the scene. It's The End of the World As We Know It 2007-10-14 18:58:00 The following are excerpts from a NewsWeek article (see the original by clicking the link) detailing the impending disaster we face with the onset of global climate change. It warns of large scale global disaster and the disruption of the food supply world-wide, citing increased weather-related disasters as evidence, along with other scientific findings. The article also laments the unwillingness of government leaders to take this phenomenon seriously and take drastic action to save civilization as we know it.Is it a review of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth? No. It is an article from April 28, 1975 outlining the growing threat of global cooling, and warning of the impending ice age if we don't take action now. Everyone is a "Values Voter" 2007-10-11 07:00:00 ****UPDATE BELOW****I read a recent post at The Soccer Mom Vote that I admit got my blood pumping. The title was "Values
? Really?" so I was prepared for a beating up on conservative voters. The gist of the piece was that this person thinks:religion has no place in the political debatereligiosity does not mean the person has morality, or always does the right thing. (which I agree with) conservative religious voters are hypocrites, because we don't think government programs are the best vehicle to help the poor and downtrodden. This was my comment on that post:Politicians always inject their beliefs into policy decisions. Otherwise they wouldn't truly believe them. Even if those beliefs are atheistic, Muslim, what have you. So don't be singling out the Christians as somehow being unworthy to run for office simply because they admit they are guided by their values.Every politician, as well as every voter, has values. They are always guided by these values. We disagree on which v Read more:Voter
To Whom Am I Really Giving? 2007-10-09 11:49:00 I was grocery shopping yesterday, where I paid less than half price for my groceries, and I saw some adorable pink travel coffee mugs for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. How much, you ask? $15.oo... for a coffee mug. You know I am a cheapskate when it comes to retail.Well, if they give to breast cancer research, maybe I'll splurge. Let me look and see how much goes to the cause.50%? no.25%? no.10%? no.5%?...of this inflated price? Wow! I think I'll just give my $15, or maybe a little more, directly to breast cancer research. It seems to me that large companies that really want to give to the cause would dig a little deeper. Could it be that their primary purpose is not really to help cancer charities, but to sell more stuff?Don't get me wrong. I'm a capitalist. I'm all for making as much money as you want, so you can hire my husband's company to landscape your massive yard, and maybe even add a huge waterfall! But not on the backs of cancer patients!I also think it's a great thi Read more:Giving
Obama Won't Wear the Flag 2007-10-05 10:59:00 "The truth is that right after 9/11 I had a pin," Obama
said. "Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security. "I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest," he said in the interview. "Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism." (Source: FoxNews.com)I'm not saying a candidate has to wear a flag pin to be patriotic. However, does Obama's specifically not wearing it to make a statement bother you? Is he saying that those who wear a flag pin are falsely patriotic? And if he thinks his ideas will "make this country great," does that mean it isn't great already?Just a few questions.FoxNews has an article with other candidates' reactions here. If Walker Texas Ranger says it, it must be true! 2007-10-22 11:09:00 When my first daughter was born, she had her days and nights mixed up. She would sleep during the day and want to stay up all night. Needless to say, this didn't really work for us. My doctor suggested that she would open her eyes more in the afternoon if we closed the blinds and turned off the lights. Then, we would leave the lights on while she slept, so the bright lights would make her close her eyes. It was an ingenious plan!In our sleep-deprived state, what else was there to do in our dark house than watch WalkerTexasRanger
every night at 5:00? So I have a strange fondness for Chuck Norris, since he helped us get our child's sleep schedule worked out. Also, I think he is an outstanding man and does a lot of good for disadvantaged kids, despite his mediocre acting. (But who am I anyway? I don't have my own show, do I?)When I heard that Chuck Norris was endorsing Mike Huckabee for president, my first thought was, "Well, great! Why should anyone listen to him?" Then I

A View on the California Wildfires 2007-10-24 07:56:00 My heart goes out to the victims of the California
wildfires. At this moment, many families are displaced from their homes, and many have already lost most of their possessions. I cannot imagine how I would feel if this happened to us.My compassion for these people brings me to a question. I really don't know the answer, so please help me out. It just seems like common sense, though. Every year, we watch as thousands of people are evacuated and lose their possessions.Would this situation be partly prevented with controlled burns and strategic brush clearing? I am reminded of a news story from a fire last year, and I can't find the reference. A man's house was the ONLY survivor in his neighborhood of a wild fire. Why? He broke the law, and cleared the underbrush farther from his house than the environmental laws permitted. Are we held captive by stifling environmental laws, or are these massive brush fires inevitable anyway?I found this editorial in the LA Times from April: So

The UN Has an Inacurate Study to Advance Their Political/Financial Agenda? Nooo 2007-11-20 19:43:00 Warning: The following contains a rant about the inefficient and misleading tactics of the UN. It is in no way intended to impune or otherwise speak negatively of AIDS sufferers. AIDS patients deserve truthful and accurate information. The New York Times reports: The UN to say it overstated HIV cases by millions. HIV is a terrible disease which needs attention and funds to find a cure. However, as usual, good news is often rejected for a view that fits a certain political narrative. The UN is "acknowledging that it overestimated the size of the epidemic and that new infections with the deadly virus have been dropping each year since they peaked in the late 1990s." What? We have been hearing that the disease is growing exponentially with no end in sight, and will continue unless we give the UN our money to find a cure.Another statistic is, in a strange way, comforting, because it means that effective treatment is growing: "Although new infections have dropped, the number of peopl Read more:Study
