Prothom Alo Cartoon
2007-09-21 11:26:28
Bangladesh is tagged as a "moderate" Muslim country, but how long can it hold this image? Even today the country witnessed rampages by Muslim fundamentalists in Dhaka. Anyone with a minimal IQ and sense of humour will laugh at the cartoon published on 17th September issue of Prothom Alo's supplement magazine Alpin, but the twisted minded fundamentalists has turned it upside down. The cartoon depicts a conversation between a little boy with a cat on his lap and an elderly cleric: Elderly cleric:  Hey kid, what's your name? Little boy:  My name is Babu Elderly cleric:  You're supposed to say Mohammad before a name. What's your father's name? Little boy:  Mohammad Abu Elderly cleric:  So what's that on your lap? Little boy:  Mohammad cat The cleric teaches the boy to use "Mohammad" before a name and like any kid he follows it and says "Mohammad" before saying "cat". Anyone will laugh at the mistake the boy makes, but the Saudi sponsored evil fundamen

The Search Continues...

When my friend Tanim introduced me to SETI@home back in 2001, I wasn't really convinced. Sure I did believe in the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence, but I couldn't sum up how analysing radio frequencies can detect alien life forms. I went through the entire site, read other literatures, but still didn't had a positive attitude to this project. Then on one fine January morning, Tanim challenged me to beat him on SETI@home. That is, getting more Work Units (WU) than he does. He had around 100 WU at that time, and I had none. I accepted the challenge, and that was the beginning. The poor chap was ultimately beaten, but it took me another year to do so.Later, I retired from the project when the "classic" SETI@home program was closed down. Sure the BOINC client was there, but for some reason I couldn't use it on any of my computers. Neither at home, neither at school, nor at work. After a long break I tried running BOINC this year, and it finally worked. So I started contribu

SFD Swags Arrived
2007-09-06 12:25:37
SFD ballons and stickers arrived today, much earlier then the last two times. Here's my cousin Ornim posing with a balloon: Get to know more at the Software Freedom Day website. Update: This picture has been featured on the front page of SFD website! Here's what Pia Waugh of Linux Australia wrote: That is totally cute! I've put it on the front page in a news item about how the teams are preparing :) Tell her she's now famous ;) Prothom Alo published this picture on their 14th September issue.

Tit for Tat
2007-08-31 19:58:10
August is gone, but this month will be remembered by Bangladeshi people for a long, long time. Here's a picture that I want to share with you all: It's said pictures speak a thousand words, and this one is a perfect example of it. It was published on The Daily Star last month, and to be honest I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw it! The goddamn army got a good teaching! :p

BTTB Hassle
2007-08-23 12:57:00
Changing DNS entry for any TLD is done through the domain's control panel, which takes nothing more than two minutes. However, if you want to do the same for your .BD domain, then you'll have to go through lot of hassles, and moreover you'll have to wait for more than a week! Here's what my experience was like: Day 1:  I went to BTTB's Internet services office at Mogbazar, where they told to submit a formal application to the Division Engineer requesting him to change the DNS entries for my domain. They gave me a sheet of paper and showed me to a table to sit and write. So I worte one and submitted it to the clerk. He told me that it'll be taken care of the next morning. Day 2:  I waited, hoping they are working on it.Day 3:  I waited till the last hour, when I realised that they haven't done anything yet. I called them up, but all their numbers kept on ringing. I was so annoyed at this! Finally after trying for half an hour on different numbers someone picked

Using Photographs, Legally
2007-08-22 12:16:00
Bangladeshi websites and newspapers has a nasty tendency of stealing photographs and graphics from Internet. What these ignorant people doesn't tend to realise that it's a serious offense, and they could be penalised for copyright and intellectual property infringement. Leading Bengali newspaper Prothom Alo published a creative work of mine without permission and without giving any credit. That work was released under full copyright, but they didn't bother to care. Almost all photographers in Bangladesh has a similar experience to share, where their work has been used illegally by these thieves. I no longer release my photographs under full copyright, but under a Creative Commons license which states that you're legally entitled to use my photographs for both your commercial and non-commercial needs; you're entitled to modify them anyway you want to to suit yourself; and distribute them anyway you like; provided that you put my name on the credit line. You don't have to take my

Deserted
2007-08-13 12:48:00
I feel deserted. I feel frustrated. I feel lonesome. She's thousand miles away from me, and I can't do anything about it. I'm in such a state of failure. Life is never fair, the angels I need are never there. Destiny is inevitable...

Sony Ericsson W810i
2007-08-09 12:23:00
I was about to get myself a Sony Ericsson W200i, but I changed my mind after reading all the positive reviews of W810i. Even though it's priced double my budget, I bought it today since it's rich in features and more importantly Linux friendly. Being a "Walkman" phone, the sound quality is superb, and so are the earbud headphones. The packages includes two tiny external speakers, which are of very good quality and can come handy if you want to listen to Radio or MP3s when a sound system is not available. This nifty device has a 2 megapixel camera, GRPS, HSCSD, and EGDE connectivity, infrared and Bluetooth for wireless transfers, and so on. For storage, a 512 megabyte card is included (Memory Stick Duo Pro) and supports upto 2 gigabyte. Once cool feature of this phone is the ability to use the data cable to recharge it, which can be very useful for a tech person like me.

Decoding QR Codes
2007-09-29 12:35:00
QR Code acts like a bar code, but it's two dimensional and smarter. It also has a higher capacity of handling data. While conventional bar codes can store up to 20 digits, QR Code or "Quick Response" code hold up to several hundred times more. I'm very impressed with this Japanese innovation and I'm sure you'll be too after you find out what it's capable of. You can decode QR Codes with a camera phone. VGA camera is good enough, no need of fancy 3 megapixel ones. You need to install a QR Code decoder on your phone, my favourites are i-nigma and Kaywa Reader. Here's how to get them: i-nigma: from your phone, point your browser to www.i-nigma.mobi and it'll automatically detect the brand and model. Go to the next step to download and install it. Kaywa Reader: same way as i-nigma, point your browser to http://reader.kaywa.com and follow the instructions. This reader is much more simpler than i-nigma, and I use it myself. Now that you've installed one of the above programs, let's

Gloomy Eid
2007-10-13 23:45:26
Festivals like Eid make me realise how lonely I'm. With no family and friends, I've nothing to do on this day. No place to go, and no one to hang out with. I woke up at 6 in the morning and I'm sitting idle at home. I think I'll get some sleep now, then in the evening I'll watch some TV. Simply an awful day. Listening to: Ayu - Connected.

CCNA Preparation
2007-10-11 12:48:00
Since November 6th is the last day to sit for CCNA exam 640-801, I've decided to go for it. They are phasing out this syllabus and introduced 640-802 where they have added more complicated and junk issues. I've started reading the CCNA Study Guide by Todd Lammle which has been lying on my shelf for quite some time. I hope I'll be able to finish this 700-pages book within the next two weeks. A friend of mine was nice enough to give me his spare Cisco 2501 router which I'm using to practice for the exam. Using a router is a much better choice than to use the simulators. I'm hoping to sit for the exam by the end of this month and hopefully I'll pass! Wish me luck, okay?

Water Kingdom Visit
2007-10-16 12:14:00
It was my first time at Water Kingdom in Ashulia and I really enjoyed it. With me was Sumon and two of his cousins and we had a good time together. There was a large crowd since it's Eid holiday, but we took it as an advantage as we could see far more number of "wet" girls than we could in any other time of the year! ;)

Lima's Wedding
2007-10-15 11:54:00
I usually avoid family programs, but I didn't want to miss Lima's wedding since we two have some beautiful childhood memories. It was also good to be able to meet almost all of my maternal relatives, whom I only get to see once in a blue moon. Nice Eid get together!

Armin van Buuren Rocks!
2007-10-20 12:56:00
"Worldwide trance community tuned in and locked into frequency... Stand by for the latest in trance and progressive, broadcasting across the planet to over thirty countries... This is a state of trance with Armin van Buuren." I just fell in love with Armin van Buuren after listening to episode # 320 of his radio show A State of Trance. He plays exactly the type of trance I listen to, and I loved his extraordinary remixes. This Dutch DJ is no less talented than Tiesto or Paul Van Dyke... no wonder his world ranking is # 3 according to The DJ List!

Dan Thunderbird

Lychee Lassi Concert
2007-11-04 12:56:00
Location: German Club, Gulshan 2, Dhaka Time: 20:45 onwards State of mind: Content German band Lychee Lassi started playing in 1998 and made a name for themselves with their debut EP Speed, which came out in 2000 and was named "Record of the Month" by TIP Magazine. They have gone on to play gigs all over Europe at clubs, open-airs, and festivals, and tonight they played in front of a live audience in Bangladesh for the first time. I really had a good time at this electronica-jazz fusion concert, and so did my friend Rafiq who accompanied me. Due to stupid government regulation the bar at the club was closed, so we opted for Pepsi and Fanta. It's getting relatively harder to get alcoholic beverages in Bangladesh... the scenario is pretty ugly. Anyways, here's the line-up of Lychee Lassi: Dirk Berger on guitar, Beat Halberschmidt on bass, Roland "Roy" Knauf on drums, and DJ Illvibe on turntables. They are flying to India tomorrow to perform at Egmore, Chennai, so good luck to them

Testing Your Geekiness

I just took the Are you a Computer Geek? test out of curiousity, and I scored 100! I don't know if this is bad or good, I'm just having a funny feeling. Here's the result: Step aside Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds, and Steve Jobs... You are by far the SUPREME COMPUTER GOD!!! I've no clue how their scoring system works, but just to check I went back and intentionally chose 3 wrong answers but I was still given 100. Anyway, if you guys have taken the test then feel free to share your score with me.
