Self-Care for the Caring Professional
2007-09-15 10:00:00
Taking care of ourselves when we are taking care of others can be a challenge. We often don’t think about our own needs, yet caring for ourselves can be the greatest gift we can give to others. When we fly, the safety instructions we’re given include putting the oxygen mask on ourselves before putting it on our children. How counterintuitive is that? And yet, that’s exactly what we need to do in order to ensure that we are capable of caring for our children.

Dealing With Job Stress in the Helping Professions
2007-09-13 10:00:00
Recently a former student contacted me for some consultation regarding working with clients who have a trauma history. As we spoke, I was reminded of how important it is for people in the helping professions to take care of themselves. While she had questions about specific ways to work with clients, her greater need was to incorporate ways of caring for herself into her daily routine. Some of the requirements of her work setting were actually causing her more stress than her clients were. I often tell students that I use more of my clinical skills with administrators and colleagues than I do with clients! Systems have a way of beating us down if we are not careful.

9/11 Anniversary Reaction
2007-09-11 10:00:00
The anniversary of 9/11 may trigger the feelings of fear and danger that originally occurred in 2001. Even those who have been treated successfully for PTSD may find that their symptoms are re-awakened by the anniversary. This may be especially true as the images are replayed on television and over the internet. It can be difficult to avoid reminders of the traumatic event. Some people may be surprised to have PTSD symptoms reactivated even when their original stressor was not 9/11. Whenever there is another trauma, either personal or societal, there may well be an emotional reaction similar to that which occurred in response to the initial trauma.

Got Milk, Got Scoliosis, Got Problems? Part 4
2007-09-06 10:00:00
What is the homogenization of milk? Will it affect scoliosis? Well, milk is an oil-in-water mixture (emulsion). The oil is fat particles of milk and is known as globules. To better understand, if raw milk were left to stand, the fat would rise to the top and form a layer of cream. Homogenization is a mechanical treatment of the fat globules in milk, brought about by passing milk under high pressure through a tiny orifice (hole), which decreases the average diameter and increases the number and surface area of the fat globules. Some experts in the field consider this maneuver of decreasing the fat globules size increases the leaking gut problems, inflammation and yes, possible viral infections. Once again this increases the stress of the immune system of a person with scoliosis. This immune stress has strong possibilities of increasing the curve percentage rate. Again, why homogenized milk? Several reasons. The globules (fat) in raw milk cluster and clump together. We have

Got Milk, Got Scoliosis, Got Problems: Part 3

Let’s see, does pasteurization change milk? What is pasteurization and why? The process was named after its inventor, French scientist Louis Pasteur. The first pasteurization test was completed by Pasteur and Claude Bernard on April 20th, 1862. The process begins with a large quantity of milk that is held in a heated vat at 63 °C (145 °F) for 30 minutes, followed by cooling to about 4 °C (39 °F). There are two types of pasteurization used today: 1.) HTST (high temperature/short time) and UHT (ultra-high temperature). The HTST method of pasteurization is milk in a continuous flow process, milk is forced between metal plates or through pipes heated on the outside by hot water. Milk is held at a temperature of 72 °C (161 °F) for 15 to 20 seconds. 2.) UHT, is considered the batch process. This is when a large quantity of milk is held in a heated vat at 63 °C (145 °F) for 30 minutes, followed by quick cooling to about 4 °C (39 °F). The most important que

Would you be surprised that a human mother’s milk and cow’s milk may have a different make-up? The fat, minerals, vitamins, colostrums and lactose content of a cow has different ratios than mom’s milk. Would you conclude that milk has a special DNA design from its mother for its baby to develop? Why, yes! In the last writings, milk is mother natures’ way of providing a safe food source for babies to triple body weight in 1 years time. A baby’s digestive system is not completely developed when first-born, lacking microorganisms (the good bacteria) and special enzymes. Ok. Looking at a two independent prospective, a cow and her milk, provides her baby (calf) with the proper protein and nutrition ratio. At birth the calf weighs about 97 pounds, a year later the calf weighs approximately 300 pounds.

I’ll see what you think after you review some of the lesser familiar facts. My goal is to educate the reader, and explore what, why and how cow’s milk may possibly have profound influence of scoliotic curve. The design of milk is to provide a food source for an infant to develop into three times their body weight in one year. This growth includes muscles, bones, and organs…right? Regular cow’s milk is composed of carbohydrates or sugars, vitamins, water, minerals, fats, and protein. Human milk the same but, a little closer look reveals: Ingredients Human Milk Cow Milk Protein 1.2 3.3 Lactose 7.0 4.8 Fat 3.8 3.8 Minerals 0.21 0.71 Total Solids 12.4 12.8

Death after the Minnesota Bridge Collapse
2007-08-17 10:00:00
Losing a loved one is perhaps one of the most painful experiences anyone will encounter in life, especially when the death is traumatic and unexpected. It can be even more complicated when the death becomes a national news story, such as the Minnesota bridge collapse. It can be gratifying to have the outpouring of support that comes from so many knowing about the loss, but it can be extremely difficult to see it played out on television day after day. While friends and family might be sensitive to knowing what you need and when it might be helpful to talk and when it would be more therapeutic to be silent, the media and well-wishers throughout the country cannot know that and may not be able to be respective of your needs.

Sudden Traumatic Loss
2007-08-15 21:28:35
No one is prepared for the phone call or the knock on the door telling you that a loved one has been killed. Your first response is generally denial – “It can’t be so; I just saw him this morning.” or “I just got off the phone with her.” This denial leads to a kind of numbness which is nature’s way of protecting us from a reality we cannot yet process. The numbness can help us navigate through the initial days when decisions need to be made. It can be difficult to have some of these decisions taken away. Often with a traumatic death, the coroner must keep the body until all necessary knowledge is gleaned. Even when the body is released, decisions must be made about whether or not to have a service and what should be included if you decide to have one. It’s unlikely that you have already had an opportunity to discuss your loved ones wishes in this regard. If you have – and I recommend that you do – your decisions may be less difficult to make. If not, you

Minneapolis Bridge Collapse Aftermath
2007-08-10 15:47:36
Many people wonder how life can ever be the same again after a tragedy such as the collapse of the bridge in Minneapolis . While things will never be the same for people after having experienced such a tragedy, healing is possible and life can become meaningful once again. Today I’m going to talk about how to handle the aftermath if one was on the bridge and survived. The next blog entry will address how to deal with having lost a loved one. Even if you weren’t directly affected by the bridge collapse, the principles I’ll discuss may be helpful to you should you or your loved ones be touched by difficult circumstances. There are several steps to take if you were involved in a disaster: • recognize that you will feel many emotions in the aftermath of this tragedy • reduce expectations regarding functioning • make and prioritize list of things that need to be done; i.e. submit insurance claims, make funeral arrangements, contact employer (whatever might be approp

Treatment of Vicarious Trauma in Volunteers
2007-08-08 10:00:00
The primary treatment for those volunteers who are experiencing vicarious traumatization is to temporarily have them refrain from the volunteer activities that precipitated the condition. It may be very difficult to help volunteers acknowledge that they are experiencing vicarious traumatization, but it’s essential that their supervisor and/or colleagues help them recognize what’s going on. If they continue to volunteer, their effectiveness will likely be compromised as will their future ability to help. Burnout is the inevitable outcome of unrelieved vicarious traumatization. Once volunteers have reached that point, they will be unable to be helpful and they greatly increase the risk to themselves of physical and/or emotional disorders. If vicarious traumatization is caught early, a brief break involving rest and recreation may be all that’s needed. If it has been allowed to progress, a longer period of recovery will likely be needed. During that time it will be impor

Prevention of Vicarious Trauma in Volunteers
2007-08-06 10:00:00
Vicarious traumatization may be prevented by ensuring that volunteers have adequate training and ongoing supervision. Knowing ahead of time what to expect can help volunteers develop coping strategies before coming face-to-face with difficult situations. Being told that emotional reactions are to be expected and are normal can go a long way toward freeing up the volunteers to acknowledge what they are feeling and ask for help. If the volunteers are aware of the potential for developing vicarious traumatization and are educated about the signs and symptoms, they will be more likely to be willing to take a break from their volunteer activities to allow time for decompression and rest. The supervisors of volunteers have a huge responsibility for screening, training, and providing support on an ongoing basis. Regular group and/or individual meetings between the volunteers and their supervisors can provide for debriefings and evaluation of the volunteers’ state of emotional st

Vicarious Trauma and Volunteers
2007-08-03 16:30:59
People who volunteer their time and talents to work with those who have experienced pain and loss may develop a traumatic response to what they have seen and heard. Called “vicarious traumatization” or “compassion fatigue,” the constellation of symptoms can include intrusive images and thoughts, hypervigilance, fear, numbing, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and depression. Some of the very qualities that motivate people to become volunteers may be the qualities that make it difficult for them to pace themselves or even allow themselves to recognize that they are becoming traumatized. A desire to help others can lead people to ignore physical fatigue or emotional exhaustion. Observing and hearing about the atrocities that exist in the world can lead to a spiritual crisis, a questioning of the world view that one had prior to becoming aware first-hand of the tragedies that some people experience. Some people may try to deal with these symptoms in unhealthy ways, s

What are the Symptoms of Brain Damage?
2007-07-27 10:00:00
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also called acquired brain injury or simply head injury, occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. A person with a mild TBI may remain conscious or may experience a loss of consciousness for a few seconds or minutes. Other symptoms of mild TBI include headache, confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision or tired eyes, ringing in the ears, bad taste in the mouth, fatigue or lethargy, a change in sleep patterns, behavioral or mood changes, and trouble with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking. A person with a moderate or severe TBI may show these same symptoms, but may also have a headache that gets worse or does not go away, repeated vomiting or nausea, convulsions or seizures, an

Scoliosis Short Leg Syndrome
2007-07-25 13:47:00
Have you asked your doctor why one of your hips seem to be higher than the other? Have you looked in a full-length mirror and your dress hem seems higher on one side versus the other, and you know that the dress has equal length? Have you noticed that your hip hugger jeans are somewhat slanted to one side and make you feel different? Ok, lets look into the bones and muscles of the lower torso. Please remember that one must keep a simple understanding of the structure and not make this too complex. Picture in your mind that the pelvis is made of three large bones that connect together and shape somewhat like a large bowl. These three bones are known collectively as the pelvic girdle. They are called the left and right Ilium and the sacrum. The Ilium is about the size of your hand. Next is the sacrum, again a little smaller than the palm of your hand, but shaped like a “C”, spade. Sitting on the back part of the bowl is the sacrum/spine. The sacrum is the foundation

How Does One Accept that the Abuse Has Happened and is Now Stopped?
2007-07-25 10:00:00
I will answer this question from two different perspectives. If you had always known about the abuse, then the difficulty can sometimes be related to having grown so used to it, that it's difficult to realize that it has stopped. It has always been so much a part of your identity that it can be hard to know who you are apart from the abuse. If, on the other hand, you had repressed the memories of the abuse and then subsequently reconnected to the reality of the abuse, then the challenge is to integrate the fact of having been abused into your view of yourself and your childhood. In either case, it will probably be important to seek out help from both a therapist and other survivors. You can look through some of my previous blog entries to learn about some different therapeutic approaches that may be helpful. Hope Makes Healing Possible! Patricia Sherman, Ph.D., LCSW

Helping People Understand You Have Scoliosis
2007-07-18 10:00:00
Scoliosis has a nasty way of making your body move and work differently than other people’s. “Why is it when I walk hand in hand, I always bump into my partner? People don’t understand when I walk that I some times run into things, and I don’t mean to. When I dance I just can’t do the moves quite right. I just can’t seem to play ball or computer games well.” These conditions are due to balancing problems, hand-eye coordination problems, righting reflex. To help other people understand these problems, you must first familiarize yourself with the neurological aspect of the disease. Then let them know why. “Along with feeling klutzy, I really like staying awake late into the early morning hours. Falling asleep is hard to do and I really don’t feel rested when I get up the next day.” Parents and spouses may not recognize these as symptoms of scoliosis. Arguing and screaming at them will only increase their hormonal imbalance of the parasympathetic and sympathe

Are You Kept In the Dark About Your Scoliosis?
2007-07-16 13:25:42
The disease of scoliosis renders many symptoms and side effects which people do not fully understand. The lack of understanding results in people's disregard of the symptoms. Persons who have scoliosis find that their daily functions are altered, but looked upon as everything is normal. For example, “Oh, my kid sleeps late in the morning, I can’t get her out of bed, she’s cranky, and won’t eat breakfast.” Typical teenager, right? Oh no this is not typical of normal healthy teenager. Do you typically hear this? “My back pain is becoming greater because I’m getting older. I’m so tired and I have headaches all the time, I’m told that I’m going to have to learn to live with it.” These are just a few of the complaints that I hear in my practice. The list continues from insomnia, mood swings, chronic fatigue, thyroid problems, ADD, sciatic leg pain, neck and low back pain, stomach pain, asthma and being a night owl.
