Midweek Menu- Bento Lunchbox 2007-09-26 08:01:47 After yesterday’s post about Princess’s 7 cavities, I decided to step up efforts to make her school lunches a little more nutritious. She’s so picky and we’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had the energy to deal with anything more than her standard pb&j. We did go with “hot lunch” for a week, but I went to school with her for lunch and was horrified with what they are feeding them. Even their pb&j option included a bag of “whale cheddars” that had trans fats. For real. I’ve been on the anti-trans fat wagon for years now and forgot that they even make stuff with it anymore. I usually give her a juice box (100% juice, of course) and a water bottle with a sports top. I explained to her that the juice isn’t good for her teeth and gave her 2 water bottles instead. She wasn’t too upset watching me pack it, but we’ll see what happens when she actually sits down to eat. I haven’t been sending her Read more:Midweek

LOSER Parent of the Year Award goes to THE Mommy 2007-09-25 16:43:54 Today I officially won the LOSER Parent
of the Year Award
. Princess had her first dentist visit today and has 7 CAVITIES! She just turned 5 years old. I didn’t have a cavity until I was well into my 20’s…what gives?!? This is my first child. She’s the sheltered one. The one who didn’t even know what chocolate was until well past her second birthday. The one who had whipped cream and blueberries on her first birthday cake because I didn’t want to expose her to the evils of sugar. She hasn’t even begun losing her baby teeth and her molars are rotting away. I know what you’re thinking…brush the kid’s teeth every once in a while, will ya?! She brushes her teeth every morning and evening (with her Princess toothbrush…the one that spins). She’s even recently gotten into flossing and swishing around a fluoride rinse. She has barely had more than a sip of soda in her entire 5 years and doesn’t really eat many sw Read more:Mommy
My Favorite- Field Hockey Article 2007-09-24 09:09:50 I mentioned before that I coach high school softball. My niece is a senior this year and was the starting 3rd baseman on our State Championship team this spring. She also plays field hockey and has been making the local paper a lot this fall. She’s become quite the athlete. I haven’t made it to one of her field hockey games this season. I’ve been busy with work and the kids…and quite honestly, I’m not really into field hockey. I “get” a lot of sports, but field hockey just doesn’t do it for me. I’m not sure if it’s the skirts they have to wear or the amount of running they do…neither interested me when I played sports. I recently saw an article about my niece making the winning goal in overtime against our rival school…this is by far my most favorite field hockey article ever!! (In the interest of maintaining her privacy, I’m not going to link to the article, but I’m going to refer to her as “M Read more:Favorite

Yet another Lead Paint recall. Thanks, China! 2007-09-22 09:05:58 I highlighted the “Friends of Mel” bracelet a couple of months ago. I purchased my bracelet as a reminder of the day that I donated peripheral blood stem cells at Dana Farber. I am a match for a 21 year old woman with leukemia. We’re still awaiting news on her prognosis. I’ll post an update when I find out if the stem cells “took”. I went onto the “Friends of Mel” website to purchase another bracelet as a birthday gift for my aunt and was very sad to see this. “To our dismay, we learned recently that parts of our jewelry contain levels of lead that are high enough to warrant this communication….When we learned that there may be lead in the bracelets, we took the proactive step of hiring an independent lab and sending random samples for testing. These tests confirmed that, though the beads contain no lead, the small rings have a high lead content. The Foundation had a written assurance from a foreign supplier that the bracele Read more:Paint

Midweek Menu- Open Table anyone? 2007-09-19 15:47:55 I’m at a loss for what to cook tonight for dinner. THE Daddy was supposed to be home, but (shocker!) he’ll be late. I am craving seared tuna in a BIG WAY. The closest and best place to go near us is in Portsmouth and it’s a bit too upscale to bring the kids after a day at school…especially by myself. In lieu of a recipe this week, I’m going to share a new website. Well, it’s new to me, at least. It’s called Open Table
. It offers “Restaurant Reservations: Instant, Reliable & Free.” It’s pretty cool, especially if you feel like dining upscale at the last minute. It’s very user friendly. You’re able to look up restaurants in your area, check out their menus and book reservations right online. I checked my favorite restaurant for Tuna, Jumpin Jays Fish Café, and they have tables available for tonight. Good to know. Too bad I’m not able to go! The best part about Open Table is that they offer Di Read more:Midweek
Patriots 38,000,000 – San Diego 14 2007-09-17 11:14:15 After a long week of back and forth, I finally have solidified which side of the fence I am on. Although there is no excuse for cheating, the New England Patriots
handled the situation with the same dignity and class with which we are accustomed. I am extremely proud to be a Patriot’s fan. THE Daddy was actually at the game last night. He occasionally gets tickets from his vendors at work. I paid the karma bank forward on this one because I told him that he really should take his father this time. That was before I realized that the tickets were on the 1st row…and well before all of the videogate controversy. One thing that we didn’t get to experience watching at home: a standing ovation from the fans the second that Belichick hit the field pre-game. I was there for Tedy Bruschi’s come back game after his stroke and he said it was that times 1000. I was teary eyed with goose bumps for Tedy, so I imagine it was quite amazing. THE Daddy said that Bill stared down Read more:Diego

My Favorite- Time Waster: Netdisaster.com 2007-09-17 09:57:08 This site is TOO funny. At Netdisaster.com, you can enter your least favorite website’s URL, pick your weapon from a hilarious list and watch as it destroys their home page. I haven’t tried all of the weapons, but so far my favorite is the “dog poop”. I actually laughed out loud watching a little dog walk across the screen and poop on my least favorite anti-liberal author’s face. For the record, I don’t necessarily disagree with some of her politics, but I find her approach extremely offensive and basically think she’s an insensitive bitch who cares less about her political agenda than building her “celebrity”. Save this for later if you actually want a productive Monday…I guarantee you’ll spend some time here! Share your favorites in the comments. Read more:Favorite
TGIF- On the Low End of the Teeter-Totter 2007-09-14 08:39:22 “I try to take one day at a time, but lately several are attacking at once.” There is an electronic sign board that I see on my way home from bringing the kids to school every day. They put up a new inspirational message or quote every morning and this was the one today. Some days they are funny, others thought provoking. This one struck a chord. This has been a very difficult week and I’m not even sure why. THE Daddy and I were away for 3 nights and arrived back on Sunday night. The week started with Princess having such anxiety over going back to school after throwing up in front of her kindergarten class that she refused to go to school without me. I spent a lot of time with her on Monday and she seems fine now. She was a little weepy on Tuesday and then bounced right back for the rest of the week. BamBam has been throwing tantrums every now and then, but he’s 2 and I expected a small amount of backlash from him as payback for leaving him for 3 nights. THE Da
WTF- New England Patriots Cheating?! 2007-09-13 08:15:45 If you follow football, it’s been difficult this week to escape the news coverage of possible cheating on the sidelines of the New EnglandPatriots
. I can’t believe it. I refuse to believe it even though the coach has all but admitted it by referring to an issue with the “interpretation of rules”. I’ve always said that Bill Belichick is on my top 3 list of famous people whom I’d like to invite to a dinner party…along with Jon Bon Jovi and Emeril. All three men have achieved huge success in their careers, yet fail to have developed a “celebrity ego”. They don’t forget where they came from and they use their success to help give back to society. They don’t seem to do it strictly for publicity sake (unlike the majority of celebs out there!). They seem to genuinely acknowledge that they are blessed with financial gains from their success and they are driven to share with those whom are less fortunate. They put a lot of posi Read more:Cheating

My favorite kid’s shoe?- Meet the Inchworm 2007-10-01 07:23:13 BamBam slept really well all weekend and even took a couple of 3 hour naps. While awake, he ate and ate and ate. That can only mean one thing: growth spurt! Yep sure enough, his favorite sneakers that I just bought to start school a few weeks ago no longer fit. A new Kohl’s opened the next exit away from us over the weekend, so we decided to check out their sneaker department. BamBam has bear claws wide feet and we always have a hard time finding anything for him at the bargain stores...let's just say that we rarely get to "pay less" for his shoes. I’m horrified at how much they charge elsewhere for sneakers these days. I hate the idea of spending $30+ for something that he will only be wearing for a couple of months…or in this case merely a few weeks. We found something in a bigger size on sale for $10 at the new Kohl's, so I grabbed them, but it didn’t solve the problem of needing something NOW. I went online and found these Inchworm shoes.:
Weekend Update 2007-10-01 07:21:05 The Red Sox clinched the AL East on Friday night. It looked like quite the celebration. Exciting news, but that pretty much rendered the game on Sunday USELESS. THE Daddy and I were both extremely tired, so we decided to donate our tickets to my high school to give away during Homecoming on Saturday. We made someone from the class of 1960-something very happy. I was really excited to go and would have still gone if it was the deciding game. But, I was relieved to NOT have to spend the day away from the kids. We actually got a ton accomplished around the house, which made waking up this morning much less stressful for me. Princess is home today…apparently her teachers have a workshop. Don’t get me started on that. I’m bringing BamBam to school late today so that we can go get their passports for our trip to Aruba in December. Of course, we waited too long to apply for the passports, so we’ll be paying an extra $60 each to expedite them, ouch. I can’t be Read more:Weekend

THE Daddy Scores Red Sox Tix 2007-09-28 11:11:22 Regular readers of MommyCosm know that I hate that THE Daddy
has to travel so much for work. He's currently traveling Monday through Friday and will be for about 5 more weeks. Just when I think I can't hate his job more...he cashes in on a really good perk. No, not the eat-and-drink-for-free-with-any-of-your-friends-at-any-of-our-restaurants kind of perk. I am SO over that one...but a really good one. He just called and has 4 tickets...to the Red Sox game...this Sunday!Even if you don't follow baseball, you should be able to appreciate this. The Red Sox are leading the AL East by just 2 games right now. There are only 3 games left in the regular season. Sunday's 2pm game is the last game of the regular season. It could will be an exciting one. The Red Sox haven't won the AL East since 1995. Better yet, they would be beating the NY Yankees.THE Daddy called to see if I wanted to go...DUH! TGIF- Only 5 more weeks! 2007-09-28 08:47:17 It’s been another long week with THE Daddy traveling for work. We can’t wait for him to come home tonight! I can’t believe we have another 5 weeks to go before he is done building the restaurant in Maine. This is getting old for all of us. On the bright side, his next big build will be one town over from where we live, so he’ll at least be able to sleep at home. You would think that the older the kids get, the easier it would be for them to have him away Monday-Friday. But, in fact, they seem to take it harder. They are starting to grasp time and on Monday mornings when I tell them that Daddy will be home in 4 tomorrows, it seems like eternity to them (and me!). Unfortunately, they aren’t mature enough to place blame where it belongs and I take the brunt of their frustration. I felt so bad sending them off to school this morning, they both seemed so tired. Enough ranting…this is supposed to be a happy post! SO, THE Daddy is coming home, we had show
Be careful what you wish for... 2007-09-27 13:37:47 BamBam is somewhat of a “late talker”. He just celebrated his 2nd birthday and has the vocabulary that Princess had when she was just one. I’m not really worried (yet) because I know that he understands everything we say to him. If you open up a picture book, he’ll point out anything, so the lights are definitely on. In his defense, Princess has done the majority of talking for him up until now. I was hoping that once he started “school”, he would be forced to open up and speak for himself. Be careful what you wish for! BamBam has picked up on about one new word a day. Of course, being the proud mommy anxiously awaiting words instead of grunts, I get so excited and make a really big deal. Which, in turn, gives him the green light to repeat said word over and over and over AND OVER again! THE Daddy is going to be in shock when he gets home tomorrow. Since he left for work on Monday, BamBam has started saying “NO!” (with passion), “No

Instead of filling it out and sending it to 50 of my closest friends, or else I will suffer some fate worse than chaperoning a kindergarten field trip to an apple orchard on a cold, rainy day (did it yesterday, post to follow!)…blah, blah, blah…I will put it in a blog post instead. My perfect evening... 2007-10-11 12:42:29 OK, my perfect evening
would probably involve Patriot's tickets on the first row and a hotel room, oh, and a few margaritas...but that's too much to hope for, so I'll settle for the next best thing: THE Daddy calls on Wednesday (not Friday) afternoon to say that he’s on his way home and will be there for dinner…AND he’s picking up Pad Thai along the way, YUM. He comes home in time to eat and play with the kids for a bit before throwing them into the tub. The kids are SO excited to see him. Lots of giggling…the kind that they reserve only for THE Daddy…it melts my heart. He snuggles with them until they fall asleep while I get a little extra work done. This eases the much-anticipated stress of not getting to work on Friday while I’m on an AppleCrest Farm Field Trip with Princess’ Kindergarten class. BamBam yells out for “Daddy!” in the middle of the night…and Daddy is actually there, hears him, AND beats me t
No Solicitors Please! 2007-10-10 08:30:00 That’s it. I’m finally going to post a “No Solicitors” sign on my front door. I don’t care how tacky or unsightly it might seem. I’ve had it. Let me recap my night for you: It was time to take a tub. Princess threw a fit because I wouldn’t let her sing ONE MORE SONG with her new Fisher Price Star Station Entertainment System. She is quite the little diva and loves singing while watching herself on our 42” plasma. I counted down the minutes and gave multiple warnings. I ended up turning the thing off and ripping the microphone out of her hands. BamBam hated seeing his sister so upset, so the instant I turned my back to go upstairs to get the tub ready, he took the microphone and gave it back to her, yelling “NO, MA, MA!” Love that he’s using words…remember Be Careful What You Wish For?! I was still pretty cool at this point…until he came up to me and hit me. (Note: Princess is still screaming in the backgr Read more:Please
Kindergarten: Half or Full Day? 2007-10-09 08:17:50 Princess started kindergarten a few weeks ago. Our public school has full-day, half-day AM and half-day PM. Sounds great, right? Not so much. They apparently do not have enough full-day spots for all the families who prefer full-day. Therefore, they do a “lottery” for their full-day spots. Unfortunately, we did not win the lottery and they only gave her a half-day in the morning from 8:30-11. Do the math, that’s only 2.5 hours. Once you throw in snack and recess, not a heck of a lot left for “school”. That might be fine when BamBam starts school. Princess has always been advanced for her age. She already is trying to read. She really needs a full-day curriculum to keep her interested. SO, we decided to send her to a private, Catholic school. Their enrollment numbers have been down in recent years and they saw what was happening in town with kindergarten, so they jumped on the bandwagon and offered a full-day program. It’s actually the school that I w Read more:Kindergarten
Small Acts of Kindness 2007-10-06 09:13:32 I just found out that one of my old bosses had a heart attack and passed away on Thursday. I’m incredibly sad. I’ll admit that there are many bosses I have had throughout my life who I would give a quick, “that’s sad” and might send flowers, but this boss was different. I met Terry and his wife when I was a senior in high school. They ran a local ice cream and burger joint. It was an old fashioned train caboose made into a take out restaurant. It had a lot of character and was a local favorite. His wife managed the books and scheduling and Terry was more of the front office guy. He was in the caboose all day with us kids scooping ice cream and working the grill. On rainy days, he taught me how to play cribbage. We had some fiercely competitive games that summer. Terry was there to witness an ex-boyfriend avoid my window at all costs. This particular creep dumped me for my older sister a couple of years before. After putting up with this for a number of or Read more:Small

Apple Picking Field Trip #1 2007-10-05 12:19:11 I just got home from a field trip to Butternut Farm with BamBam’s class. We went apple picking. A few thoughts: 1) What a great little farm. I was surprised by the number of different apple types. There were sheep and chicken too. I wasn’t sure if the kids were old enough to really appreciate the field trip, but they all seemed to love it. I bought THE Daddy some fresh apple cider. A nice treat for when he comes home tonight. Thankfully, the kids will miss him so much that he’ll probably crash in one of their rooms. Let’s just say that he loves cider, but it doesn’t love him. 2) There were 3 classes of 2-3 year-old kids and they were required to ride on the school bus. They leased a special bus for the day that had seat belts so that they could strap the kids into their own car seats…brilliant. That’s the number one reason why I won’t let Princess ride to/from kindergarten on the bus. It escapes me how seat belts are required BY LAW, how Read more:Apple

Presidential Candidates are Pumpkin Heads...at least they will be at our house! 2007-10-05 04:55:02 I went to The Pumpkin
Wizard to check out their newest patterns and was so excited to see these stencils for Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Rudy Guiliani and Mitt Romney! We already have 100’s of pumpkin carving stencils because we host an annual “Potluck Pumpkin Party” at our house. This is only the 2nd year that we’ve hosted, but we’ve attended one for about 5 years now. We should have about 100 people in attendance this time around. I have a few friends who are very into politics and I’m sure these will be a hit! If you’ve never used stencils to carve your pumpkins before, it’s easier than it looks. I'll try to post a "how to" post soon. I’m not sure that I would tackle these the first time around because they're a bit more advanced. There are tons that are quite simple and look impressive. Is MSG Poisoning America? 2007-10-03 12:16:27 I received this article via email about the hidden Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in our food. I had been holding off writing a post about it because I could not find the original source. I apologize in advance if this is your work. Whoever wrote this definitely deserves the credit. I figured since the article was inspired by the book The Slow Poisoning of America
and the author of the article claims to be a friend of the book’s author...we’ll call it good enough. When I think of MSG, I think of Chinese Food. I do always ask for no MSG in my food at a Chinese restaurant. It’s become such a habit, I forget exactly why other than that it’s a chemical that I don’t want in my food. I had NO idea that so many restaurants and companies were using MSG in their products. Again, I had NO idea that it is also called “Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein”, “Aginomoto” or “Natural Meat Tenderizer”. Apparently there are many other names for MSG
When You've Gotta Go... 2007-10-03 08:16:36 Joe over at joeprah inspired me this morning to tell one of my most embarrassing stories. His hilarious post involved shopping with his little ones while realizing that he, um, had to find a bathroom…like NOW.Our family has a house in Aruba. THE Daddy, Princess, BamBam and I were last there a couple of years ago. Our friends who live there have a farm and made goat soup to celebrate the New Year. Yep, they used one of their own goats. Supposedly it’s a local tradition. I’m pretty adventurous, at least I used to be, and I didn’t want to be rude, so I tried a bowl. I definitely didn’t love it…the meat on the bones kinda grossed me out. I didn’t feel so well afterwards and came down with horrible cramps and what we like to refer to as “monkey butt” (aka monkeys flying out of your butt). Come to find out, I ended up with e-coli. It lingered for over a month. When we returned to the US, I had a horrible mall incident. I was with Read more:Gotta
Update: Marker for Down Syndrome 2007-10-18 08:33:54 I wanted to update you on my previous post about my friend, the one who is pregnant with her third baby. Quick recap: she was having twins and lost one, then found out that the remaining baby had a marker for Down Syndrome
. Well, we hung out last night and I am so happy to report that they went through a TON of tests and determined that the baby girl is 100% healthy and does not have Down Syndrome. What a relief! I’m very concerned about the way her doctor handled the situation. The ultrasound tech was great and kept everything in perspective. She stressed that it was only a marker and they could do further tests to confirm or deny the results. She only mentioned Down Syndrome. She used the word “concerned” but said she was not “worried” yet. Then, the doctor came in and started talking about other things beyond Down Syndrome and stressed mental retardation, quality of life and having to make decisions about the pregnancy. My friend was about 20 weeks preg Read more:Update
Contemplating a Third... 2007-10-17 12:47:15 I am hoping that if I say this out loud, I will be able to make it go away. “I am seriously thinking about having a third baby.” I say “I” because THE Daddy has pretty much said that he is OK either way. He thinks he’s being supportive, but I see it as a deliberate way to avoid responsibility if the outcome of “our” decision is less than favorable. He was supposed to get snipped right after BamBam was born. It’s been over 2 years. If he was certain that he didn’t want more, wouldn’t he have gone through with the surgery already? There are so many reasons that immediately come to mind why we should NOT have another: 1) We already have a girl AND a boy. They are healthy, happy, beautiful, intelligent children. We are completely blessed. Why would we want to tempt fate? F*&k with Karma? 2) Strike me down, say what you want, I know this sounds awful, but I HATED being pregnant. Sure, it had moments when it felt completely mira

Loving Half-Day Kindergarten 2007-10-16 09:14:54 Yesterday was the first half-day for Princess at her kindergarten. I mentioned before that we were struggling with the half or full day option. She’s so ready to be at school full-days, but we were unhappy about the lack of curriculum in the afternoons. We decided to give her a little of each and dropped her down to half days on Mondays and Fridays. Tuition was reduced $475, score! My morning went a little smoother. I was able to get the kids ready without having to pack her a lunch. It saved me about 10 precious minutes. We actually got our “good morning” call into THE Daddy before getting into the car. I hate having to pass off my cell phone and translate “BamBam Speak” via speaker phone while trying to drive. I was a little worried that Princess would be upset when she had to leave, but it was quite the opposite. I’m not sure who was more excited when 11:45 rolled around! I was able to get in 3 hours of work while she was there for the morning. Kn Read more:Loving
