STEVIE NICKS 2007-09-25 14:22:17 Ok, we made the decision to have TWO dogs. Of course it needed to be a Sheltie for the newcomer. Hunee is absolutely the most loved AND pampered Sheltie on the face of the earth for the past 10 years, we felt . Needless to say it was a tough decision to have another, although wanted by the parents, another dog of any persuisian was a possible threat to the only child and heavily pampered Hunee…….
BUT after meeting Stevie Nicks, and her calm, even forgiving demeanor, we realizied this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Stevie is now in her new home and seemingly is very very happy. It didn’t take long. Stevie immediately staked her claim at bedtime, plopping in between the two of us, licking, seemingly unending for hours, in the middle of the bed til we awoke. Stevie slept in the bed the entire night with nothing but love.
After 2 days we are so in love with Stevie Nicks and Hunee has been the trooper of all troopers after 10 years of being an only Sheltie. It too
New Girl…Sarah…Is She ALL Sheltie? 2007-09-25 10:57:32
On Sunday we spent almost an hour trying to decide if Sarah
is a Sheltie mix or all Sheltie. She’s very sweet and we thought we knew who the perfect, recently available, foster Mom would be for this shy girl…Char Pierce. Char does great things for the shy kids. They feel safe and secure with her and it show in their increasing confidence. In the end we took Sarah into Sheltie Rescue and posted her on Petfinder.
What do you think…is she full Sheltie, part Sheltie, or something else entirely?

Who’s In Charge At Your House? 2007-09-23 14:59:01 Dorothy Christiansen, National Sheltie Rescue coördinator, sent the Sheltie Rescue list a wonderful article about making sure that the right individual(s) is/are in charge in a house shared by humans and dogs. The immediate topic of the article is ensuring that your dog(s) are more relaxed, knowing that you are firmly in charge of the pack, and that he or she doesn’t need to worry either about the pack not having a leader or about having to fill that role himself/herself.
You can find the article at “Nothing in Life is Free“. After you’ve read the article, click on the “Home” link; on the home page, you’ll find links to several very useful articles that can help with a variety of behavioral issues with dogs. (Yes, surprising though it may be, even Shelties sometimes have behavioral problems !)

Pictures of Stevie Nicks! 2007-09-22 21:17:20
I don’t know if this is going to look like a photo for real or not…I see the code but not the image - there’s the photo! This is a photo of Stevie
Nicks and Jackson. This entry has turned out to be more of an experiment in uploading photos than anything else. Jackson is either a Corgi/Sheltie mix or a fluffy, which is a Corgi that is an embarrassment to its breeder because he’s got a major fault of a very long, Sheltie-like coat. He’s adorable though…like Stevie! More photos of Stevie tomorrow!

Adoption Day: Stevie Nicks 2007-09-22 17:52:30 This afternoon, Stevie
Nicks went to her new home – her forever home. Stevie arrived her only a couple of weeks ago, but she’d become a wonderful addition to the pack. She had this great talent of interceding calmly and quietly when any of the other dogs got into a spat. She’d just gently insert herself between the two squabblers and gently, but physically, move one of them away. Stevie was also one of the great cuddlers that go through our program every now and then.
Her new family is just delighted with her. Stevie will be a companion for their older Sheltie, as well as a very-much-wanted family member. As they left our house with their new Sheltie-daughter, I opened my arms to give Stevie a big hug and she looked at me like “Sorry, but you can’t have me back…I’ve got a new family” And off they went to PetCo where Stevie was going to be allowed to shop for her own toys and treats!

Therapy Dogs 2007-09-20 16:12:44 I was reading the post about Tommy, and how Barbara and Jim have hopes that he might be able to serve as a therapy dog at some point in the future. I just couldn’t resist sharing my own experience with my rescue, Twist. He is a 6 year old Sheltie who came into my life about 3 years ago. In that time we’ve enjoyed doing obedience, agility and a little herding. We recently had the privilege to take a vacation to a place called Camp Winnaribbun in Lake Tahoe which is designed just for dog lovers like us. Among the huge variety of activities available to the campers was the chance to prepare for and then take a test to become a certified therapy team. I jumped at the opportunity! What a great way to be able to work together with your dog and bring happiness to others at the same time! I’m proud to say that Twist and I passed our test, and we are looking forward to this new adventure. I would really encourage anyone who have even casually considered this to look i Read more:Therapy
What is it? 2007-09-20 16:12:01 Okay…so is Jackson a Shorgi (Sheltie Corgi mix) or is he a fluffy (a Corgi with a fault…that being his long, fluffy coat). You decide! Oops!!! Have to figure out how to get his photos here… - Barbara
Welcome to SheltieTales 2007-09-16 19:50:00 SheltieTales is a blog about…well, Shelties, of course. On occasion, we will no doubt blog on other topics, based on what’s going on around us and occupying our thoughts.
The Sheltie community and the rescue community are made of really, really nice people. Sure, there are going to be people with whom you have bad chemistry, but I promise you that anybody who gives of their hearts and souls like these two communities’ members do is a Very Good Person. So be nice. No name calling, no flame wars, and as little sarcasm as possible. (Remember that book that was popular a few years ago: “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten“?)
We sincerely hope that some of what we write is interesting to some of you and that you’ll care enough to comment on or rate entries that catch your eye. Even moreso, we hope that you’ll participate by writing your own blog entries on subjects that seem (to you, of course) relevant to the subject(s) at hand.

Adoption Day — Snoopy 2007-10-01 20:10:03 About a week ago (Sunday, 2007-09-23, actually), this very nice couple came over to meet Snoopy
, one of our personality-plus rescues. Snoopy’s this great little (by comparison with most of our rescues, little!) girl who’s about 4 years old, but acts more like a 1 year old. She’s great and we really liked having her around. Well, except for her habit of letting us know loudly when she wanted her dinner, or out of her crate, or…
The couple brought their newly-adopted senior Sheltie, Gilley, to see if everybody was comfortable with everybody else. It was clear right then that there was a lot of compatibility, but Barbara and I are reluctant to complete an adoption on the first date. So, we suggested that they foster Snoopy for a while to see whether things were really going to work out.
Shoulda known…by Friday, they’d already called to ask if they could set up an adoption date “as soon as possible”. So we made an appointment with them for Read more:Adoption
Adoption Day Stories 2007-10-01 19:55:04 Earlier in this blog, I posted “Adoption
Day — Stevie Nicks“. Since then, it occurred to me that we do enough adoptions that we’re going to have a ton of posts on the general subject of “adoption day”. Being an engineer, I hate to waste energy. Naturally, my first thought upon realizing that was “Aha! Let’s have just one blog post called “Adoption Day Stories
” (yes, I realize that this post has that very title) and tell each adoption day story as a comment on the post.
But that dog won’t hunt (sorry!). After all, ever one of our adoptions is a special event, no matter how many we have done. Stevie deserved her own post, and so do the rest of the kids who find their forever homes. Besides, it takes exactly the same amount of disk space, screen space, and effort to do the Right Thing as to do the comment bit.
So, my policy is that each dog gets his or her own adoption day post and any comments on that post will be relevant to
Playin’ catch-up 2007-10-01 19:48:39 Wow! Time slips by, doesn’t it? I’ve been meaning to write about several things recently, but the day job (gotta bring home the kibble, ya know) has been intense, and I’ve spent evenings debugging various little things on the blog and trying to get some advertising going.
When I do something to this blog (other than “mere blogging”), I check to see what it looks like in the two browsers that I use: Firefox (version 2.0) and Internet Explorer (version 6.0. And both of those are installed on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. I can (and soon will) install Opera (version 9.21), but that’s about as far as I can go.
If any of you readers out there use other browsers — or operating systems, such as Apple’s or Vista or Windows 98/ME — please use them to look very closely at various pages on this site and please report anything that doesn’t look right to you. I’ll do my best to fix them.
The good news is that the site validates wh

That’s where we put links to other peoples’ blogs that we think might interest our readers, as well as the occasional link to other sites that might be interesting.
Today, I’ve added a link titled “Artificial Turf…for Pets”. This is our very first paid advertisement! Although I had not yet said so on the front page of this blog (or even on our About page), all advertisement revenues are used solely and exclusively for Sheltie Rescue of Utah — to pay for veterinary expenses, buy food and supplies, transport dogs from relinquishers and to adopters, and the like. None of those advertisement pennies and dollars will ever go into the pockets of individuals associated with this blog.
Please click on the link to let our advertiser know that it was worth his effort to get us to place the link. You can access a blog entry at the

Indy, a very special boy 2007-10-12 20:08:05 A few months ago, we rescued a little Sheltie boy named Indy (Independence) and a little Sheltie girl (Gracie) at the same time. Gracie was placed very quickly and settled into her new forever home quickly. But I just liked Indy so much that I didn’t want to hurry him out the door. We hung onto him for a few weeks and I really couldn’t quite make up my mind. After all, we not only have a constantly changing house-full of rescue Shelties, we’ve got our own three (Isaac, who is 15½, Sly, who is 12½, and Star, who’s about 3½). Adding another permanent dog to the household just seemed unfair to Isaac, Sly, and Star.
So, while I was off on a business trip, Barbara sent Indy off to be fostered with one of our Sheltie Rescue family, Shannon. Shannon was a great foster mom for Indy, but she has some problems getting around and Indy was just a little too active (and noisy), so she asked if we could take him back. Which we did…happily.
This time, Indy stayed wit
Advertising. Or, Why We Need This Blog To Succeed. 2007-10-12 19:47:44 What is a blog for? For some people, I guess, it’s an artifact of their egos: I’m so important that everybody will want to know what I’m thinking. For others, it’s a genuine effort to belong to and participate in a community, or maybe a sincere desire to offer expertise, support, or just joie de vivre. And, for others, it’s clearly pecuniary and nothing more.
We want this blog to be in that middle category. I am just not that interesting, so I have no illusions that you’re all waiting out there with bated breath to discover my latest brain drool. And I like to believe that I’ve got higher motives than “Gimme da cash. Now!” I think that we who participate in this blog really do have some useful things to offer to the dog, Sheltie, and rescue communities and I hope that we might say something interesting or beneficial on occasion.
But we gotta pay the bills, too, which is why we’ve decided to “monetize” the blog. (I& Read more:Advertising
Didn’t you notice? 2007-10-12 19:31:53 Nobody’s commented on the “bullets” in the sidebars of this blog! I worked a long time on those. Of course, they’re only 16 pixels wide by 16 pixels high, so the resolution isn’t very good. But each and every one of them is a tiny little sable-and-white Sheltie head with nose pointing at the item on its right!
OK, if nobody notice
d, maybe that means that it’s impossible to figure out. So, you tell me (or else I’ll start a poll!): should I keep them just like they are, should I try again (maybe making them a little bigger), or should I just get rid of them because they clutter up the page?
Oh, and if your browser pays attention to things like the favicon, there should be a little Sheltie head icon in the address bar of your browser (that’s the box that contains the URL at which the page you see is located). I can’t make those bigger (I think) ’cause they’re limited to 16×16 pixels.
Food. It comes. 2007-10-12 19:25:11 You know what superstitious behavior is, don’t you? For me, it’s channel surfing past the USA Network channel on satellite every night because 10 years ago they used to have good late night movies…I keep expecting, against all evidence to the contrary, that I’ll find a good movie “tonight”.
For our dogs, it’s a little more immediate. We feed them in their crates (and everybody knows his or her own meal-time crate), so they naturally associate their crates with food. Once in a while, we neglect to close the gate into the feeding room — we’ve turned over the dining room in our house to the kids. And, once in a while, we’ll look into the room only to see one of the dogs sitting hopefully in his or her crate…hoping that food will come!

BAH! (Big Awkward Headline) 2007-10-12 19:20:58 Sorry about that big, hot pink, ugly headline up at the top of the home page for this blog. It’s there because Barbara’s trying to win a digital camera from a rescue organization who’s looking for ideas about “how to let people know that video is coming to [that organization]”. It’ll be gone in a week or so. In the meantime…well, we all suffer for our passions

Missing the kids 2007-10-10 20:15:57 Sigh…I’m sitting in a meeting room on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, where I’ve been for the last three days, with two more to go. The meetings are going just fine, but I really miss the Shelties and my darling wife Barbara. I’ve been a road warrior for decades now, traveling more than staying home (seriously…I normally travel about 60% of the time). It’s always hard, and I get really grumpy the day or two before I have to leave on a trip — longer trips imply grumpier feelings, too (poor Barbara, having to put up with it).
Oh, well, at least I’ll be able to go home on Saturday morning, but only for overnight. I leave AGAIN on Sunday for a 1-day trip, returning Monday evening. Then (hooray) I’ll be home for a whole 6 days, leaving again on the following Sunday for yet another week-long trip.
Sly and Star, in particular, get all upset when they see my suitcase sitting by the door. They go into super-cute mode, hoping that they can Read more:Missing
Introducing Michelle - Sheltie Socializer and More! 2007-10-10 20:00:31 Hi, We’ve been really lucky to have been contacted by Michelle
Baksh who had a beautiful Sheltie-girl named Penny that she lost about a year ago. She and her husband live in a community where their current dog puts them at their limit so Michelle needs to look elsewhere to get her “Sheltie fix”. We here at Sheltie Rescue of Utah are more than happy to welcome Michelle and give her that opportunity because what she offers us and our rescue Shelties in return is truly invaluable…socialization and interaction with our rescued Shelties. Especially those who are very much in need of this kind of support like Simone, Tommy, and the ever suspicious Polly…who is suspicious because her senses are failing her as she ages.
Thanks, Michelle!!

Evie and the Praying Mantis 2007-10-06 17:34:59 Before I moved to Utah I’m not sure if I’d ever seen a Praying Mantis
…just knew about it from science class and photos and such. Here in my own backyard I seem to trip over them all the time. What is it about Utah and the Praying Mantis — do we have an abundance of bugs that make the Mantis a very happy neighborhood bug? Evie was out with me in the yard with several other dogs. We were just finishing up our going potty routine when I noticed Evie was sniffing at something on the ground like it was alive. I figured it was a leaf, blade of grass, or something like that. After watching her for a moment and seeing that her interest didn’t let up and that in fact it looked as though she might even be following something…I had to check it out. Wow! Evie had found a green stick that moved! Gently using her paw she tried to steer the green stick and move it closer to her. The green stick didn’t want anything to do with the giant furry thing
Thoughts about Laddie 2007-10-05 21:40:39 Laddie wrote a few thoughts a couple of posts back and that prompted me to share some of my thoughts about Laddie and other dogs like him.
When Laddie came to us, I think it would have been fair to say that he had the potential to be a mild fear-biter. By that, I mean that he felt threatened fairly easily, especially by open hands raised near his head. Perhaps he’d been slapped by previous owners — I don’t know. When he felt threatened, he would threaten right back, baring his teeth, lifting his lip, growling, and turning as if to bite. He did make contact a few times, so it wasn’t an empty threat. Interestingly (and unusually), he seemed to do that more with Barbara than with me, leading me to believe that his previous family had a fairly assertive man and a fairly passive woman. If the man was gone much of the time (e.g., to work) and the woman wasn’t sufficiently sure of herself, Laddie was quite willing to fill the power vacuum and be the boss of the woman
Today’s chuckle 2007-10-17 16:29:43 The following was sent out on the SheltieRescue list by Brenda Lux:
