Sugar’s rescue story 2007-10-16 15:25:16
I want to share with you my website about a recently rescued Sheltie named Sugar
. She is our second Sheltie but our first rescue. The website is called Sugar’s Blog.
You’ll find lots of pictures as well as Sugar’s rescue story
and also an ongoing blog from Sugar’s perspective. I hope you’ll enjoy it.
Shelties I Have Known: Merlin 2007-10-14 21:47:31 In 1969, the woman to whom I was married at the time acquired a Sheltie. I’d never even heard of the breed before then, but I immediately fell in love with them. The woman was a bit, ummm, un-centered and did some really weird things to force the poor little guy to prove that he loved her more than me. This relationship didn’t last very long, but I “puppy sat” for this Sheltie for a few years until my ex got her act together and demanded him back.
Shortly afterward, in 1975, I got married again and got my first Sheltie from Connie Hubbard’s Astolat Kennels in northeastern Pennsylvania. Connie and I became friends and stayed in touch until her death a number of years later. When we went to her house to meet her recent litter, there were only two puppies remaining. We wanted to work our new “kid” in Obedience, but didn’t trust ourselves to make a choice between the two, so Connie recommended that we take the boy, whom we named Astolat&rsquo Read more:Merlin
Adoption Day: Laddy 2007-10-18 17:43:35 Last night, Laddy’s new mommy and daddy, newly-married and newly-honeymooned, came over to complete the adoption. When I brought Laddy into the room where the couple were waiting, his face lit up like a kid at a birthday party. I’d been telling him all day that “Today’s the day, your new mommy and daddy are going to come get you”, and he looked over at me like he was thinking “You weren’t lying…here they are!”
Barbara and I sat and talked with them for well over an hour as we did the paperwork (adoption contract, checking Laddy’s microchip, etc.). I spent a solid 10 minutes talking to them about Laddy’s particular “issues” and educating them on the best ways to respond to situations where Laddy gets frightened and thinks that he needs to warn somebody off, threaten somebody, or (highly unlikely) defend himself. They “got it” immediately, and were applying the things I told them while we were all Read more:Adoption

The Ellen Show, or Rescue Organization Policies 2007-10-22 16:13:29 Disclaimer: I did not actually see the episode of The Ellen
Degeneres Show that has created such a controversy in the dog rescue community. My observations about those events are thus based on what I’ve been told. That, however, doesn’t really affect the principal thoughts in this blog entry.
Background (about the Ellen Show episode): Apparently, a Ellen Degeneres adopted a dog from a canine rescue organization (nameless in this blog, so I’ll call it “CRO”), then determined that she wasn’t going to be able to give the dog the home that it deserved and gave the dog to her (Ellen’s) hairdresser (I think). That violated a provision of the adoption contract that Ellen had signed, so the CRO went to the dog’s new home and recovered it. According to reports I’ve been given, Ellen ripped the CRO a new one on one of her show’s episodes.
So the question being debated is: Who’s right? Was the CRO within its rights to recover the Read more:Rescue

When it rains, it pours 2007-10-22 15:49:00 I’m currently in Vancouver, BC (CAN) on a business trip.
When I left the house (I always have to qualify my answer when somebody asks me “How many dogs do you have now?”), we had 11 dogs in the house. Before I got to Vancouver, we had 13! In fairness, one of those 13 is a former rescue named Ritzy who’s at “Camp Sheltie” for a few days while her adoptive dad’s out of town.
We have a new girl with us. Her name is Gigi and she’s a really sweet, cuddly, somewhat overweight sable and white girl who’s actually not too much over size. She was released to us by her family with the warning that she was not at all good with cats. Well, she’s been very nice to our cat, exhibiting no problems of any sort. She’s going to be very easy to place. In fact, Barbara’s taking her to another foster home (probably today), where we think she’s very likely to be adopted
And, sadly, we have an earlier rescue back with us. Poor She Read more:rains
Sheltie stolen from Kansas in 2002-still missing-have you seen Racer? 2007-10-30 14:23:58 My name is Katie Roberts-Gilliam and I am still desperately looking for my blue merle Racer
. Our 3-yr old boy was stolen
from our ranch in September 2002 in Overbrook, Kansas
. He was intact, had 2 piercing blue eyes, full white collar, had a Home Again microchip registered with AKC. We have no idea where he was taken, could be in any state. His picture is on his breeder’s website: www.royalhillshelties.com under the “performance” category. There is a large reward for his return or information regarding his whereabouts. If anyone has any information, please contact me at: (785) 331-9925.
The Joys of Puppyhood! 2007-11-03 16:25:40 A week ago Sunday, I pulled a Dad and seven puppies from a local dog control pound. Mostly in rescue, I have dealt with older dogs and even when I’ve had a puppy or two, they came singlely. After getting them home, and carrelling them in the kitchen, I realized that I had a gang of juevenile delenquents on my hand!
Sheltie Stolen By Tourist On Mothers Day! 2007-11-03 16:17:45 Please help us find Mya! This is her story.
My name is Mya, I am the most important thing in the world to my Mom and I know it! On Mothers
Day 2007 my mom was out of town. While she was gone my Dad was in charge. He let me out in my 6 foot privacy fenced backyard to potty. Dad wasn’t paying attention. The neighbor’s bird dog dug a hole under the fence because he was bored and his Mom and Dad let him run loose in the neighborhood. I wanted to see what he was doing so I joined him on the outside. A man and woman came up and offered me some food. I didn’t know them but I visit people at the nursing home all the time (I am a therapy dog) so I thought it was ok. But they took me and put me in their SUV. The SUV is black or dark green with TN plates and a Stone Mountain GA tag holder. The people who took me are a man and woman. I was at the BP station on AL HWY 59 in Foley AL when they took me (Foley is near the beaches). However, someone thinks they might have seen me in t Read more:Mothers Day

Three happy adopters and four happy Shelties! 2007-10-31 19:07:53
We are so lucky to have some of the world’s best Sheltie adopters. They send us photos of happy Sheltie Moms and their Sheltie kids! This is one of those great photos taken by Bobbie’s husband, Todd Blackley. From left to right are Bobbie Pyron and her rescued, handsome Sheltie-boy Teddy , Linda Broussard and her rescued Sheltie-boy Shep and beautiful Sheltie-girl Abbey, and two courageous survivors, Susan Hamada and three-legged rescued Sheltie-girl, Cloudy. To be complete I feel the need to include a photo of Bobbie’s Boo-girl. Aha! I’ve found two that I really like….hope you all like them too. - Barbara

Evie and Jackson - Partners in Crime! 2007-10-31 10:40:03 Evie is very happy these days to have another youngster here as curious and as intrepid as she is when it comes to investigating the unknown. Thanks to Evie, Jackson
is learning that when Jim enters the room it’s cause for running and barking at the top of our lungs. Sound the alarm! Things are going to happen! If Evie starts to check out a leaf outside, Jackson will go up to it and sniff it slightly less cautiously than Evie. Did I mention that Evie is part cow? Outside she delicately nibbles on a variety of greens. I spend a lot of time watching this activity and trying to keep it to a minimum. It’s evident that she enjoys tasting leaves and grass blades. Now…thanks to Evie…Jackson will take the lowest hanging leaf on the lowest hanging branch of a weeping birch and start munching on it. This boy has shown no interest in eating grass but he saw Evie pulling leaves off of this tree and he just had to try it too!

Google Page Rank 5! 2007-10-31 01:03:27 I guess I’m exposing my inner (and outer!) geek, but I just have to brag a little. This blog has finally received a Google
Page Rank, which is a number from 1 to 10 that indicates how “popular” a web site is. The rankings depend on many things, like the number of “hits” a site gets, the number of other sites that link to it, the page rank of sites that link to it, and a whole lot of secret sauce.
Well, we just found out that SheltieTales has a Google Page Rank
of 5! I’m amazed…and very pleased. One reason we might have such a high ranking so soon is that a good friend of mine put a link on his site to SheltieTales — and his site has a Page Rank of 9!!!
You’ve got to go look at his site. Not only is it nice to visit his site as a way of thanking him for linking to us, but his site is very…umm, interesting. It’s gorgeous, eclectic, dynamic, and, well, gorgeous. Called DeviantArt, it’s unusual but not off-putting. The
That darned cat! 2007-10-31 00:54:32 I’m allergic to dogs, and even moreso to cats. Naturally, we always have about a dozen to 18 dogs around. (Hey, what are allergy medications for, anyway?!) Years ago, when Merlin died, his Sheltie-sister (cousin, actually) Ellie was really lonely. I worked about 18 hours a day (some things never change!), so I knew that another puppy was out of the question. As a compromise, I got Ellie a cat, a wonderful orange tabby named Cassie. Cassie was a really great cat to have around, very good with all of the dogs (taking no crap from any of them, either) and served as a very nice way to screen rescue Shelties for cat-related problems…and train the dogs out of those problems!
When Cassie was a bit over 18 years old, it became obvious that her quality of life was slipping rapidly, so we made that terrible decision that we animal lovers face when our furkids get old and sick. Because of my allergies, we agreed that we would be catless, although not happily.
Well, about a year ago,
Too funny! 2007-10-31 00:38:52 Here’s another laugh-’til-you-cry story from Hondo at the Wild Bunch (as always, unedited, just as John wrote it), told from the viewpoint of a stray dog:
I was walking down the road and it was raining. I have spent many a day and night walking on the road since I’ve been a stray but not on a cold stormy night. This car slowly pulled up and stopped and figuring it was someone that was feeling sorry for me I jumped into the car through the open window. I looked over toward the drivers side of the car and there was nobody sitting there and I can tell you I was scared but that was nothing to how scared I was as the car slowly started moving again down the road. I was just about to jump out the window when I seen I was slowly coming up to a curve in the road. Just as I got there a hand appeared through the window and turned the steering wheel. I froze just as the hand disappeared just as quickly as it appeared. I went just a little further down the road in this car when
Adoption Day: Gigi 2007-10-31 00:34:57 Sometimes, things just come together.
A week or so ago, we took in a new rescue, a pudgy little sable-and-white girl named Gigi. This adorable year old was a bit overweight (but not obese) and needed a dental, but she was sweet as could be and loved to cuddle. We assumed that she’d be easy to place.
But we had no idea just how easy.
Barbara’d been talking to Peggy, a long-time Sheltie and rescue enthusiast here in the Salt Lake Valley, for several weeks (maybe a few months, even) about possibly fostering a dog for us. Peggy was mostly interested in a blue merle, which we didn’t have in the program. But a few days ago, Peggy talked to Barbara and said that she just needed a Sheltie fix and no longer cared about the color.
On Sunday, 2 days ago, Barbara and I loaded three dogs up into our Nissan Pathfinder and drove over to Peggy’s place — a great acre of land on which she keeps two horses and has loads of fully fenced backyard for the dogs to play in. We took Read more:Adoption
Grab your credit card — new shopping opportunities 2007-11-07 15:00:58 Yup, it’s holiday shopping season again, and we’re proud to announce several new products just put up on the Sheltie Rescue Mall. Our very own Fientje Allis is instrumental in our being able to offer these products, so I want to publicly thank her for this major contribution.
A product that we expect to be very popular (partly because you can use it all year ’round) is a line of greeting cards (which we call PhotoCards™) featuring photos of and stories about rescued Shelties and their friends and families. At the moment, we’ve got about a half-dozen cards posted, but more are on the way (as soon as I have the time to process the images and upload them).
Another product of which we’re particularly proud is a collection of unique, almost all one-of-a-kind, jewelry designed and created by the Native Elders of the Navajo nation. If you buy a piece of this jewelry, you will be simultaneously helping two worthy causes: the Native Elders and their families, and Read more:credit
It oughtn’t be like this 2007-11-06 21:47:56 As I mentioned in another posting, I’m currently in Boston for a business trip. While I’m travelling, I anticipate that one of our rescued Shelties (Shelby) who was recently returned to us because of her skin problems, is going to be placed with a new foster home where we anticipate that she will be adopted and stay forever. Shelby was one of those delicious little girls when she first came into the program. I’ve long forgotten the details (although I’m sure that Barbara will recall them), but I do remember that she was incredibly sweet, very private, and quite cuddly. When she came back to us, I was out of town; but, when I entered the house upon my return to SLC, her eyes shone and she virtually leaped into my arms, wagging her entire body. (What an ego boost, eh?)
Well, it’s almost guaranteed that she’ll be off to her fantastic new foster home (and most probabably her forever home) before I et back from this trip. I won’t get to see her agai
New products! 2007-11-06 21:37:43 Sheltie Rescue of Utah has just started selling two new lines of products on its web store, SheltieRescueMall.com. We are particularly proud of these products. One is a line of greeting cards with original photographs of rescued Shelties (and friends of rescued Shelties) on the front and a short tale about those Shelties on the back. The photography is done by friend of Sheltie Rescue and rather amazing photographer Fientje Allis. Any Sheltie lover will love these cards.
We have also started offering Navajo jewelry, produced by Navajo elders and share with us through the Adopt An Elder program. The Navajo elders and their families receive full price for their jewelry (which, if I do say so myself, is pretty awesome!), while Sheltie Rescue of Utah adds a small markup to cover our expenses. Anybody who buys one or more pieces of this jewelry will not only be getting a lot of value for their money, but they will also be simultaneously helping two worthy causes: the Adopt And Elder program
Freedom is just another word… 2007-11-06 21:30:58 I’m really depressed tonight. I’m in Boston tonight for a business meeting tomorrow, and I phone Barbara a couple of hours ago before I headed off to dinner (at a very nice Afghan restaurant) with a friend of mine. Barbara told me that she’s increasingly concerned about Isaac, our last remaining “planned” dog. Isaac is just about 15¾ years old (he’ll be 16 in early March) and he’s been doing pretty well until recently. But he’s having increased mobility problems. His rear legs are so weak now that he cannot stand up from lying down most of the time, and it’s getting to the point where he can’t really stand on his own any more. Barbara and I are headed off on Saturday to the Tampa, FL area where we’ll work on and sail our 40′ sailboat. Barbara’s unsure whether Isaac will be in any sort of condition to leave him with our (very reliable, I must say) petsitter, Amanda. It’s not that Amanda would ever negle Read more:Freedom
Wild Blue Yonder 2007-11-23 10:30:28 It’s one of those mornings that depress me the most. I’m leaving in a couple of hours for the airport. Today, I’m flying to Frankfurt, Germany, where I’ll hire a car and drive about 170 km south(ish) to a village named Jagsthausen where I’m attending a 5-day technical meeting. I’ll fly back home on Saturday, 1 December, but leave again on Monday to fly to Australia.
There, I’ll spend two days in Canberra (their capital city) giving seminars and meeting with my employer’s customers, then the weekend doing a bit of exploring in some near-outback town where there are caves, then two more days of seminars in Sydney, flying home on Wednesday, 12 December.
But that’s not all! After one day at home (again), I fly to the Netherlands for the weekend. “Why?” I hear you ask. Well, I’m otherwise going to be about 8,000 miles short of achieving super-elite status (so-called “1K”, meaning “100,000 miles the pre

eBay Auction: Help Rescue and Find a Great Christmas Gift! 2007-11-22 11:46:16
This link will take you to see our listing on eBay where we’re auctioning off this really striking turquoise and hematite necklace made by a Navajo Native Elder.
One of our Sheltie Rescue
volunteers also volunteers for the nonprofit Adopt A Native Elder program (www.anelder.org). This program supports Native Elders in the Oljato and Monument Valley communities in Utah and in the Leupp and Big Mountain communities in Arizona. One day, we were admiring some beautiful turquoise jewelry that our volunteer was wearing. She told us that the jewelry came from the Navajo Indian communities where she volunteered. We wondered if Sheltie Rescue could contribute to the support of these Native American communities by purchasing their jewelry and simultaneously help Sheltie Rescue by selling it in our web store. After some research and lots of work, we’re very excited and proud to present these beautiful pieces as an initial test of this concept. If it works, we look forward to a three Read more:Auction

Sable of West Sussex - Beautiful UK Sheltie-Girl 2007-11-22 11:12:12 A customer of our webstore to support rescue, http://SheltieRescueMall.com was kind enough to send us a photo of their beautiful Sheltie-girl Sable. Sable is eleven years old. I just love this photo of her. Colin, her Dad, ordered some Planet Sheltie Bath Towels. I asked him how he found the towels and our webstore. This is a bit convoluted and I think best explained in Colin’s own words so here’s what he had to say…”
As to how I found the web site it was as follows:- a friend at work showed me phototgraphs he had posted on the site www.flikr.com where people can post their photograghs for the public to see or can restrict viewing to relatives or friends. I did a search under public photos for “Sheltie” and “Shetland sheepdog” and came across a picture of a sheltie that I guess was at one of your fund raising events … I made out sheltie Rescue in the background. Isaac: There's a new star in the sky tonight 2007-11-21 21:33:02 I can’t believe it. Isaac
’s gone. This afternoon, we decided that we couldn’t let Isaac deteriorate any further, knowing that it was our responsibility to do what’s right for him, regardless of our pain.
Isaac was the last of our “planned” dogs. We’ve still got two Shelties that we’ve adopted ourselves (Sly and Star), but Isaac was planned. He was with us from just a few weeks old, and stayed around for 15 years, 9 months, and 18 days. When he came to us, he was the happiest puppy imaginable and brought us tremendous joy. His breeder had given him the name “Isaac” and I dislike changing a dog’s name.
But Barbara and I had to figure out a registered name for this great kid. The Hebrew equivalent of Isaac is ??????? (Yitzchaq or Yitzach), which means “he laughs”. That was so appropriate for this beautiful blue boy, so we registered him as Scherzando Prophet of Joy. (Scherzando was his breeder’s kennel&rs
The Black Spool - Beautiful Embroidery for All Reasons and All Breeds! 2007-11-20 16:11:08 Hi, I wanted to share with everyone the information on Jackson’s new Mom and Dad’s business — also daughter Tabitha’s business —The Black

Jackson Finds a Home - Maybe? 2007-11-20 15:13:01 I have a very, very soft spot for the exuberant and loving nature of Corgis. The fluffy Corgi who ended up with Sheltie Rescue of Utah seems to have accidently found himself a home while we were out running errands together on Monday. With our Isaac boy needing special care and attention I decided to take the most outlandish member of the household, Jackson
, a Corgi whom I love dearly, with me while I was out for several hours on errands. One of my errands was to drive up to Clearfield and pick up some newly embroidered towels from our ourstanding embroidery shop and rescue supporters - Blackspool Embroidery. I was looking forward to seeing our newly embroidered towels, Vanessa and Tabitha (Mom and daughter who run the shop), and their dogs who usually hang out with them at the shop. Their yellow lab mix, Jack, was there and ready to say hello as soon as I walked in. Jack is only 3 years old, also somewhat exuberant, but significantly slowed down by being very overweight. Kisses in the Night! 2007-11-28 22:51:20 We have a little black and white female named Simone that came from a puppy mill along with another Sheltie, named Ritzy. Both are very shy but Simone has some very funny little habits that only seem to get funnier as she opens up to life here. Ritzy in the meantime has found a forever home with a wonderful Dad. She doesn’t like the dominant dogs in the house although she’s happy to play a bit with a dog that’s not too intimidating. Other than that and knowing our routines really well, Simone spends an awful lot of time curled up in a corner hoping nobody will notice her. But the exceptions to this are growing… At meal times if I’m slow to get the dogs into their dining room (which used to be a human dining room) she will look for an opening between the dogs that are trying to bug me into feeding them and creep over to me and quietly put her forepaws on my knees and she looks up at me — into my eyes.
