…But Evil Don’t Look Like Anything 2007-09-25 13:43:58 The Sala Rossa feels like a second home these days and this weekend I shared my second home with Damien Jurado and Okkervil River. I heard Dukes of the Archipelago were there too, but I only got to see them leave. Damien Jurado’s opening performance was breathtaking. His songs tell sad stories. So sad that my girlfriend was almost in tears. I was blown away. ryantheduke had this to say (which is far more articulate than what I’m saying)&hellip
;…
Back in the Napster days, when I was downloading at 4.8kbps, I was focused more on individual songs than on albums. I would get obsessed with many songs, many that would now make me cringe, but some that had a real long lasting appeal. “Ohio” by Damien Jurado fits in here. I’ll say with no doubt, that this is one of my favourite songs out there. The lyrics are simple and the delivery very sincere. A combination that reminds me of a young Dylan performing “Moonshiner”. I was excited as hell
Trying to Find a Peaceful Song To Sing When Everything Goes Wrong 2007-09-21 13:07:28 It’s sad to say, but a Ryan Adams show is a big gamble these days. You can really never tell what you’re gonna get. It could start off really strong and then he could have a minor meltdown and storm off stage. As much as I love the guy, he sure can piss me off sometimes. The first time I saw him, he was just starting to tour for the Cold Roses album. That night in Toronto was one of those bad nights. Ryan & the Cardinals came on stage, launched into this new song, I hadn’t heard called “Magnolia Mountain”. Wow. It looked like we were on our way to a mindblowing show. Well, shortly after that, Ryan finished his first bottle of wine. Then some aborted songs followed, lots of sound problems and tuning, then bitching at the audience (if you are a fan of Ryan’s this must sound very familiar). Although, through the lows, he could still bust out a great tune, it wasn’t enough to salvage the night. So that was my introduction to R Read more:Peaceful

The Fookin’ Boss!!! 2007-09-17 09:36:40 Just a small update. We just spent our unborn children’s money to ensure that we bring you the best coverage possible of the Springsteen show at Ottawa’s Scotiabank Place on October 14th. Be sure to check back with us for videos and mp3s.
That was the best last minute decision I ever made.
His upcoming album, Magic, is certainly not his best, and there is some filler, but also a handful of classics. Here is one of those.
mp3: Bruce Springsteen - Terry’s Song (from Magic)
edited to add: Brock and I are not lovers, as much as that first sentence would lead you to believe.

Beirut has been working closely with Vincent Moon of Blogotheque to create some beautiful videos, all in anticipation of their new album, The Flying Club Cup. In fact, if you go to www.flyingclubcup.com you will see that they will eventually have the whole album in these great little videos (there are 2 right now). “Nantes” is the opening track on the new album, and what a way to start it. Check out the video on that site of them walking down the stairs in his old apartment building in Brooklyn. The song builds and they descend to the basement… It’s beautiful. Then be sure to head over to the take away show from a few months ago.

Osheaga 2007 Is Old News 2007-09-11 11:04:08 The Osheaga weekend is over, the dust has cleared, and there were no cheese fights. I was so lucky to have scored free tickets for the Saturday show, my day of choice of the 2 (Thanks again Nancy). We got there during the start of The Editors set, they were my favorites of the day. I love their energy and their raw power. Next up, was the The Veils. The Veils, according to my Osheaga itinerary are from Auckland, New Zealand. These guys held their own, and are worthy of checking out. “Nux Vomica” is the name of their new album, and Brooklyn Vegan has a lot more to say about them here.
Back over to the main stage to check out Blonde Redhead. I love Kazu Makino’s voice, she has such a different style that works so well with the rest of the band. Their setlist was mostly tracks from their new album “23″, my only complaint was that Kazu’s perfectly soft voice was a little low in the mix, and the guitar was too high (see common problem for sound engineers) Read more:Old News
Trendwhore’s Acoustic Hour Pt. 1 - Todd Snider 2007-09-09 22:25:36 This summer in Ottawa, we were treated to a mind-blowing Bluesfest lineup that included amazing acts such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison & The White Stripes. Naturally, I was very eager to see these acts, but at the same time, there were numerous artists, unknown to me, that I wanted to check out. At the top of this list was Todd Snider. I had heard talk of him for years. Being a Dylan nut, frequenting message boards, you get to know a lot of people’s favourite songwriters, and because of this I was introduced to many new artists. However, sometimes I was so busy listening to Dylan, some artists went under the table in my “listen to at some point in your life” pile. And here sat Todd. I always knew I’d get around to him someday, but it took seeing him live to hurry my ass up.
To get an idea of his sound, picture John Prine and Robert Earl Keen, now put them in a blender and add a dash of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark (The grandfathers of this good shit w Read more:Acoustic
And It’s Your Party, But I’ll Die If I Want To 2007-09-06 22:46:41 Wow, not much going on here at Trendwhore that last couple of days. ryantheduke is back at school and I’m lining up the fall concert schedule. Today, I’d like to introduce you to a band that I have fallen in love with over the past couple of months, Los Campesinos. If you haven’t heard of these guys yet, they are a 7 piece band from Wales and they offer the best indie pop I’ve heard in ages, and I challenge you to prove me wrong! Back in 2006 you might have seen these guys open for a small time group Broken Social Scene. Yesterday I got the You! Me! Dancing! 7″ and We Throw Parties You Throw Knives 7″ from www.recordstore.co.uk and low and behold You! Me! Dancing! was signed! If you are looking to buy more Los Campesinos (which is Spanish for ‘The Farmers’) look here, here, here, or here. One of Montreal’s up and coming artists sent me a link to the following video. Taking Heartache With Hard Work 2007-09-03 22:22:14 Sorry for the lack of posts, folks. I meant to get something up this weekend (no penis jokes), but a last hoorah of drinking before school starts got in the way.
Tonight on the menu is an old Modest Mouse show. If you are a fan of the band, you have no doubt heard from the music snobs that they have done no good since before “The Moon & Antarctica” was released. This is an attitude that, unfortunately, many people have adopted. The truth is, “The Moon & Antarctica” is a fantastic album that shouldn’t be slagged, and “Good News For People Who Love Bad News” is mostly very good, but the latest release “We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank” came out a bit flat. It was with the popularity that fans of the “old” Modest Mouse came out screaming foul. I still laugh at some of them listening to “Float On” and just tearing their hair out. The band just put a different spin on their songs. Instead Read more:Taking
Stars & Kevin Drew - Signed CD’s 2007-08-30 16:52:36 Newbury Comics has been pretty boring in the way of signed cd’s lately, but there has been a resurgence of good shit.
The new Stars album “In Our Bedroom After The War” is the latest of the list of hand scrawled gems. The band did something really interesting with this and leaked the album themselves through their record label, Arts & Crafts. In the times we live in, it’s nearly a certainty that your album will leak, so why not leak it yourself? I think it’s smart. Fans will hopefully download the album through the band, and be so thankful they will gladly buy a hard copy when it’s released on September 25th (especially if it is signed!) Order it here.
And to save a few bucks on shipping, you can also get Kevin
Drew’s new album, “Broken Social Scene Presents: Spirit If..” signed. Check it out!
Unfortunately, I can’t pass judgment on these albums, as I haven’t yet given them good listens, but 2 signed albums fo Read more:Signed
When You Die, You Can Stand Up For Me 2007-08-29 23:39:48 The Wolf Parade long weekend is over. I attended the last show on Monday, however forgot to load my memory card into my camera and thus I have nothing from Mondays show, but a wise man once said something like ‘….don’t be sad, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad’. Anyway, as most of you know by now, the current set list contains a lot of new material which can sometimes be bad news for some fans, this was not the case. Upon hearing Stevie, Language City and Fine Young Cannibals at Fridays show my anticipation for the new album rose ten fold.

As Did I, We Drink To Die, We Drink Tonight 2007-09-30 01:40:39 Our latest trek to La Sala Rossa was to see wonderkid, Zach Condon. We got out of the house a bit late tonight, so unfortunately we missed Alaska in Winter & Colleen. If I had known the former was playing, I would have made a better effort to get there early.
However, no complaints! La Sala Rossa had a strict curfew running tonight, so at 8:30 Zach walked on stage, followed by about 9 friends who happen to be extraordinary musicians. Things kicked off with “The Penalty” and continued with one beautiful melody after another. The crowd response was amazing (as I’m finding a lot at this venue); silent when they needed to be, and very loud when the songs were sung.
Before the band could even leave the stage, the crowd was stomping like hell for them to stay. They didn’t make us wait long and performed an encore to remember. We snagged the setlist from the stage and saw that the only word for the encore was “Gulag”. Awesome enough on it’ Read more:Drink

But Nobody Cares When It Gets In Their Hair 2007-09-29 17:03:36 This will be a quick post. I attended the Andrew Bird show last Wednesday at Le Tulipe. Andrew’s vocals were strong, and the show was phenomenal, even though I wasn’t in the mood to be there. Here is the show, sans the encore. ryantheduke and I are heading to Beirut, expect that show up here tomorrow. As for the Okkervil River videos, don’t hold your breath, they are pretty dark and will need some touching up.

Underline Everything, I’m a Professional 2007-10-10 16:13:20 As part of the wonderful Pop Montreal festival, The National were nice enough to come to town this past Sunday. I missed seeing them in 2005, because when their tour with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah crossed into Canada, The National were nowhere to be found. This time around they were here, and very grateful to be here. Matt and the rest of the band were grinning all night at the crowd reactions, especially when the whole crowd was singing along (hear: Fake Empire) and also when the entire crowd made the “awww” noise at the sound of “Daughters of the Soho Riots”.
The set comprised of mostly all Alligator/Boxer material, to everyone’s delight, and the fans familiar with their older albums were treated to “Cold Girl Fever” in the encore. The best song of the night, in my opinion, was “Squalor Victoria”, a song which they “have no idea what it’s about”, according to Matt.

Oceans Never Listen To Us Anyway 2007-10-09 22:52:51 I’d like to thank the CBC Radio 3 for bringing such a great show to Pop Montreal. The lineup was Lightning Dust, Oakley Hall, Sunset Rubdown, and Black Mountain. From what I heard, The Lightning Dust set was great, I missed it because I was still hungover from the Dr. Dog show. Oakley Hall didn’t hold my attention at all. During their entire set I was pondering why the CBC Radio 3 would set up a show that wasn’t 100% Canadian, isn’t that their whole shtick?!? I mean that with no disrespect, as I have a man crush on Grant Lawrence and I listen to his podcasts weekly. It was great seeing Spencer Krug hammer the keyboard again. The sound was great in Le National, even though the mp3’s don’t do the show justice. You’ll be happy to know that the entire show was taped and will be on the CBC Radio 3 website sometime this week, but remember this… Trendwhore beat CBC to the punch (hear that Grant!?). But It’s Just A Sweet, Sweet Fantasy, Baby 2007-10-08 21:54:59 Thursday night marked the opening day of the Pop Montreal festival and was my second time seeing Owen Pallett’s, Final Fantasy. The first was in the tiny Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec, and that was the smallest venue I’ve ever been in with about 150 people. This time, it was at a much larger venue, The Ukrainian Federation in Montreal, it was here I saw the Arcade Fire earlier in the year, but that is another story. Aside from the size of the venue and the set list, the 2 shows were the same, stellar! Stephanie Comilangs performs an intricate slide show on an over head projector that accompanies the songs and the show perfectly. Owen Pallet has the uncanny ability to make his shows very intimate. During the Wakefield show he did a great cover of Bloc Party’s “Modern Love”, last night he chose to do an odd, but great rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy”. I didn’t know the names to some of the songs, if you know please post th Read more:Sweet

I Was Tryin’ To Find My Way Home But All I Heard Was a Drone 2007-10-16 10:55:52 Sunday night was amazing. As a casual Springsteen listener I was hesitant to shell out $120 for Bruce tickets, mainly due to the increase in shows I’ve taken in as of late. From the second Bruce took the stage til the moment he left, the money that I spent seemed irrelevant. The way that he captivated the crowd left the young and the old in utter amazement. It wasn’t only “The Boss” that made this show, a lot of credit goes to The E Street Band. Mind you, I haven’t been to (or seen) a show where Bruce has played without the E Street Band Band for comparison, but for me their presence and musical talent was incredible. Max Weinberg is a phenomenal drummer and The Big Man brings so much style and talent to playing the saxophone.
I’d like to thank all those who attended on Sunday. A good crowd can add so much to a show and the Ottawa crowd was hot for Bruce. The cougar count was through the roof. You could tell Bruce and co. enjoyed themselves, especia Read more:Heard
Win & Regine Join Springsteen on Stage [VIDEO] 2007-10-14 23:01:41 You heard it first here, folks.. ok, maybe not.. those pitchfork guys are just too fast (but you’ll see it here first!).
Unreal moment in Ottawa tonight as Win and Regine from Arcade Fire joined the boss on stage in the encore to play “State Trooper” and “Keep The Car Running”. It was quite hard to film in there, but we did get the songs recorded. They will be up tomorrow when Brock gets back to Montreal.
brockmasterflex update:
I’m back in Montreal and uploaded the videos. I think we are the first to get them. There is a lot of camera movement (I’m sorry, I was in the pit) but the audio dynamite!
The MP3s will be up tonight, and more footage of the show (sans Arcade Fire). Stay tuned!

I Was In The Drop D Metal Band We Called Requiem 2007-10-18 01:19:26 The last 2 days have been a roaring success for Trendwhore, we were mentioned in Spin, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and Pitchfork. ABC emailed for permission to use our video footage on a program called “What’s The Buzz”, how cool is that? Well, now that the hype is over, its back to doing what we do best, poorly written reviews and shaky footage. Today I have coverage from the Spoon show at Le National last night. They were great, but I believe in my heart of hearts the show could have been better. Britt Daniel mentions that this wasn’t their best show before coming out for the encore, however the crowd were hot all night. The set list was a good mix of their back catalog (which is massive) with their new. I was crossing my fingers for “Japanese Cigarette Case” and “Sister Jack” but no dice. My girlfriend had a blast and noticed that most songs (especially the new) where played much faster live (see “The Underdog” and &ldquo Read more:Metal

You Can’t Kill Something That’s Already Dead 2007-10-23 21:54:39 We are pretty late updating this week, ryantheduke has been busy with school and I’m just not picking up the slack like last week. I took an impromptu trip to Ottawa on Friday to check out The Jimmy Swift Band at Mavericks. If you have ever heard of JSB, they are a jam band with a heavy mix house music. It was a good show for the 70 intense fans that showed. My footage was shit so I got nothing.
Since it was the Dukes sister’s Birthday weekend, my girlfriend and I chilled til Sunday so we could take in Wintersleep at Barrymore’s on Saturday night. Great show and great venue. If you are in Ottawa and have a chance to see this place, do it, even if Hedley are playing! Barrymore’s has a western showroom style with giant mirrors on each side, making it easy to see the band and giving the illusion that the venue is massive. Wintersleep has a great sound and Paul Murphy’s voice is very haunting. I’ve been listening to the new album, “Welcome To The
So Now We’re Drownin’ In Birthday Cakes 2007-10-29 09:01:02 I had a really great weekend (for those wondering). I celebrated my 25th year of being alive. Shit, I’m old. OK, enough thinking about that, today I have an old show from my archives. Modest Mouse, live at the Metropolis back in April (04.25.2007 to be exact). Man Man opened that night, but unfortunately I only got to catch the last song of their set. This tour is still going across North America (with Love As Laughter).
This was back in the day of my 1Gb card so I had to pick and choose songs (those where hard times). I remember that this show didn’t have the great acoustics I had come to expect of Metropolis shows. I also remember that Johnny Marr didn’t bring much to the show, except maybe some out of key backing vocals. However, Dan Boeckner (of Wolf Parade) came out played during Dramamine which made the show, in my opinion.

The Highway Is Alive Tonight 2007-10-24 18:42:10 My concert schedule has cleared up a little bit, and truthfully, it’s a welcome break. There’s nothing I’d rather spend my money on, but well, I need money to spend on it. So, to entertain you, our lovely oink-less readers looking for new places to download high quality material, I have dipped into my archives. I’ve been on a steady diet of Bruce since the show last weekend, and though the show was mind-blowing, I keep hearing friends talk about how good his tours were “back in the day”. Which got me thinking about my favourite tours of all time… Now, most of my list would be dominated by Dylan (’66, ‘75, ‘80, Fall ‘02), but if those were my top 4, Bruce would fit in the top 5 with his Ghost of Tom Joad Tour, which spanned from ‘95 to ‘97. These shows were mostly all solo Bruce, and the tour produced some of the finest audience recordings I have ever heard, and this one must be at the top of the list. Read more:Highway

……And The Winner Is? 2007-11-02 09:38:17 2007 was a great year for Canadian music, but who specifically reigned supreme? Well, according to 30 of the best damn Canadian bloggers in the world it’s Leslie Feist. I had my money on Arcade Fire but she was my second choice. Her new album was played over and over by my girlfriend and to reach total indie-hipness (I threw up in my mouth a little there). 1234 was used in the latest IPod ads. How much bigger can you get? However, she didn’t play with The Boss, now did she. Anyway, I’d like to thank Matt for allowing me to voice my opinion. Check out the list over at I (heart) music. God Asked Noah If He Wanted To Die, He Said “No Sir” 2007-10-30 22:05:08 2007 has been a bad year for punk rock. Its seems punk rock is something that is bought and sold these days, and usually you can get good deal at Hot Topic. The Thermals are a breath of fresh air for punk rock. This trio from Portland, Oregon has done so much with so little. Far too many times these days you see bands with needless instruments trying to be the next Beirut or Arcade Fire. You don’t need much to make great music, case in point with The Thermals. From a distance, the band is nothing more than a bass, a guitar and a set of drums but come together to make some of the best punk rock of this century (its only 8 years in mind you). Before the demise of Oink I was lucky to grab More Parts Per Million and The Body, The Blood, The Machine, both of which I’ve been listening to daily as I pound keyboards at my day job. I convinced a friend of mine to tag along, partly because I thought she’d enjoy the show and partly because I owed her some money (now less 12 dol Read more:ldquo

Have To Stop Myself From Climbing On The Table Full Of Empties 2007-11-07 16:09:14 John Samson is one of Canada’s best songwriters. After leaving Propaghandi in 1997 to start a publishing company, Arbeiter Ring Publishing, John went on to form The Weakerthans. Their latest release, Reunion Tour, has been generating a lot of positive Internet buzz (My preorder is still in the mail *sigh*). What keeps me listening to The Weakerthans is Samson’s unusual song writing. It’s elegant, illustrative and uniquely Canadian. Their show last Friday at Le National was nothing less than exhilarating. The audience was captivated from start to finish and what a finish it was, they did three encores! For a mellower sounding band, their live performance mannerisms were pure cock-rock even though my meager video footage doesn’t do justice. The Replacements cover was a little unexpected but amazing. I managed to tape the entire show, the MP3’s are linked below.

I’ve Been A Better Lover With Your Mother 2007-11-04 22:44:35 I just picked up tickets for the Attack In Black and Ladyhawk show at Sala Rossa on November 22nd. This got me to thinking of the first time I saw Ladyhawk when they opened for Tapes ‘n Tapes at Le National back when the weather was warmer. Only 45 people got there early early enough to see their opening set. Their loss! They got such a great ‘garage band’ sound (similar to Dinosaur Jr.) which I can’t get enough of. Their debut record is solid, so do yourself a favor and pick up tickets to see them!
Back to the Tapes ‘n Tapes, some news spread regarding the new album that ryantheduke passed along from an email he got from their mailing list,

He Starts To Speak And Then He Goes To Pieces 2007-11-12 20:13:24 Hey, you little trendites. Yeah, yeah, the ghost of me lingers. School is brutal this term and brock has thankfully picked up my slack and kept the site going. Many thanks to him.
Last month, in the midst of many smaller club shows, My girlfriend and I took a one day trip with some friends to Albany to catch the Elvis Costello/Bob Dylan show. Amos Lee actually opened the show, but after hearing him several times on a Dylan tour in ‘05, I knew to stay away for fear of falling asleep.
Let me start off by saying that Dylan was just shit that night. I have seen the old man over 20 times now, so I have grounds to say that. Of all those shows, he has only disappointed on a couple of nights, but they have all been recently. Back in ‘02, when my Dylan tour days started, he was on fire. Back then he really fed off his amazing band, which consisted of Larry Campbell, Charlie Sexton, Tony Garnier and George Receli. That was his best touring band since.. The Band! However, they
It’s Looking Like A Limb Torn Off 2007-11-11 12:21:46 I was a reading concert review of Band Of Horses at Lee’s Palace back in 2006. The review was not in their favor. The reviewer had two issues with the performance, the first being that there wasn’t enough “ferocity” displayed by BOH and that the opener wasn’t very inspiring. Before the show at Le Tulipe last week I looked up the word “ferocity” so I could see if I understand where the review was coming from. Ferocity is defined on dictionary.com as ‘a ferocious quality or state; savage fierceness’. I’m a fan of Band of Horses but that noun should be saved for bands in the same genre as Slayer. As for an inspiring opener, The Drones were that and so much more. Gareth Liddiard’s stage style similar to that of Dan Boeckner or Joe Strummer. However, the rest of The Drones lived up to their name, and could have used some on stage ferocity! I recommend The Drones, they are my new favorite Australian band (take that Men At Work
