Am I A Horse? Am I On Fire? 2007-11-14 09:42:20 I was watching some spirit crushing TV over the weekend and caught the new Apple IPod Touch commercial. To be perfectly honest the commercial caught my ear because the song promoting this beautiful device was “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” by Cansei de Ser Sexy. Back in June a co-worker got me hooked on their self-titled debut record. At first I thought it was ok, but it grew on me like a fungus. It didn’t take long for the lyrics (that upon first listen seemed to be pure cheese) to get stuck in my head while walking to work or taking a shower! It was also by fluke that on the same month that I got exposed to the album, CSS played Le Tulipe here in Montreal. The show was a breathtaking orgy of pop culture references and sexual innuendo. The leading lady, Lovefoxxx, twists, dances, and exudes so much sexual energy that I’m reminded of Iggy Pop. There is no doubt that CSS is having a phenomenal year, first getting signed to Sub Pop Records and now having a song in an Read more:Horse

I Sleep Light On These Shores Tonight 2007-11-18 13:45:50 For me, “Marquee Moon” by Television is one of those albums I’ve always heard raved about, but never got around to listening to. I finally forced it into my ears a couple weeks ago and the ears did not resist. It’s a great album from start to finish, so I see why it makes all those “best of..” lists. Throughout the album I heard traces of the Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown sound, which piqued my interest, but my ears really perked up when I was listening to “Elevation” and realized that Dan and Spencer may have borrowed from this song. The whole tune sounds like it could be a Wolf Parade song, but there is one part in particular that makes me think the boys are Verlaine fans. It’s from a new song, which is called “Crazy Horse” at the moment. (If you are new to the blog, and haven’t seen their live stuff yet, check the links below. Their new album is going to blow shit up!)
Anyway, have a listen for yourself.. t Read more:Sleep

Punk Rock Warlord 2007-11-28 15:04:57 I had never really taken to The Clash as a kid, so I didn’t know anything of them or Joe Strummer until 2003. I was studying music (I say studying…) back in Newfoundland and almost every night, for a long stretch, we would go to my friend’s place to play crib/guitar/chill and the music of choice always seemed to be Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. I became hooked on them very quickly and I was excited about this band that Joe Strummer was part of… this very multi-talented collection of people that made up The Mescaleros.
“Bhindi Baghee” (from Global A Go-Go) was the song that I really liked to hear in those crib sessions. It’s a conversational piece of music that starts off with Joe talking to a stranger along the high road. The stranger is looking for something to eat and wonders if they might have Mushy Peas around these parts. Joe says “Nah, but we do got…” and then he rapidly fires out a bunch of things superior t Read more:Punk Rock
Splashing Around In The Muck And The Mire 2007-11-25 21:50:07 I was hoping to have the Ladyhawk/Attack In Black post ready today, however there were some complications involving long file uploads and Sunday napping that slowed down the process. Check back later this week for some notes, mp3s, and video from that show. I was actually disappointed with that evening as a whole, but if you want to read a more favorable review of the same show, different night just go here. For todays lazy Sunday post I’ve dug (yet again) into the archives and found some juicy footage of the Cold War Kids to share. This show took place April 2nd, 2007 and was my virgin mission into La Sala Rossa since my arrival to Montreal 5 months prior. The CWK performance consisted of an old piano, a bass player with a terrible hat, and an absolute perfect sound. The setlist was mostly songs from their ‘06 debut release Robbers And Cowards, however the crowd was also treated to outstanding cover of Tom Waits’ Dirt In The Ground as a prerequisite for Hospital Beds
And I Never Cared About Henry Rollins 2007-12-13 23:04:53 Personally that lyric cannot be further from the truth, however since I have some news concerning Mr. Rollins
I thought that it would be fitting. Last week I had a chance to check out the Los Campesinos live at Le National opening for Kevin Drew. Up front I want to say that I didn’t stay for Kevin Drew, frankly my nerves were shot from work, my girlfriend and I were feeling less than 100% and I don’t like Spirit If much. If you want a great review of KD’s show check out The False 45ths opinion here. The Los Campesinos have been a great addition to the music of 2007, like a already said months ago here. I heard they stole the show in Toronto the day before, which doesn’t surprise me, they gave the crowd at Le National everything they had with the style and energy of a headlining act. These guys are the personification of fun, changing my sour Montreal winter mood to more pleasant one. The set list was what I expected, mixed with some tracks I haven’t heard Read more:Henry
Buck 65 Signed CD Contest 2007-12-09 17:06:32 Thanks to the folks at Warner Music Canada, we offer you our first contest; a signed copy of Buck 65’s new album, Situation. We thank them and we thank you for reading.
Check out this quote from Mr. 65:
“When writing a song, considerations of hip-hop or street credibility never cross my mind. That being the case, no point of view, emotion, or instrumentation is off-limits for me. If I find an idea, memory, or emotion interesting enough to want to write about it, I just try to turn that into music in as clear and honest a way possible.” - BUCK 65
Download one of the singles from Situation, “Dang” below… It’s a catchy one!
Buck 65 - Dang (from Situation)
Email me (address in sidebar) with the subject “Buck 65 Contest
” for your chance to win a signed copy of Situation. I will accept entries until next Sunday, the 16th of December and I’ll announce the winner in this post on Monday. Read more:Signed
Black Is The Color Of A Strangled Rainbow 2007-12-06 09:50:54 Where have we been? Its been a week and no updates! I apologize with all my heart. The weekend was longer than expected and my new Wii has been sucking up most of my free time. My new years resolution in ‘08 will be to make sure something like this will never happen again. You’ll be happy to know that even though we haven’t been updating the site, the camera has still been rolling. Today, I have the MP3’s of the Elvis Perkins show last Thursday, and in the next little while expect some Bon Iver and Stars action with some Los Campesinos! thrown in for good measure. Now that the apology is out of the way on with the show.
Elvis Perkins In Dearland surprised me with all the new material last week at Le Studio Juste Pour Rire. I was expecting mainly 80% Ash Wednesday with a booming rendition of “Doomsday” to close the show. However we got a lot of new material that I enjoyed more then most tracks off Ash Wednesday. “Weeping Pilgrim”, a J.P. R Read more:Black

The Eyes of Dumb Animals Shining Their Light 2007-12-18 20:38:07 The happily married duo, known as Handsome Furs set out on their little holiday tour of Ontario last night in Ottawa. They were slated to play at Club Saw, but then moved to Mavericks for capacity issues… and after seeing Mavericks, I can’t imagine how small Club Saw must be. We arrived at about 8:15, and met Dan and Alexei outside who were also on their way in after SEVEN HOURS of driving from Montreal, which is normally a two hour drive. Dan jokes about that and Quebec’s inability to cope with large amounts of snow in his always entertaining stage banter.
They have been touring for quite a while now, so there were no new songs played. We were treated to incredible versions of the album songs, as well as the non-album track “Heaven” and their cover of Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky”. For lack of new songs, Dan said he was adding in some new lyrics, which was a nice bonus. “Snakes on the Ladder” and “Dumb Animals

Yellow Is The Color Of Charity 2008-02-26 19:42:58 Though it may not appear so, we at Trendwhore are working. Slow and hard. When The Moon Hits Your Eye 2008-02-15 14:25:40 That Vincent Moon sure gets around these days. The brain behind La Blogotheque made a trip to the USA last year to record Beirut in different settings; one video for each song on the The Flying Club Cup. Now, he has emerged again, in a big way. Seems like R.E.M., who are [...]
In 2080 I’ll Surely Be Dead 2008-02-14 00:59:17 Sunday night was a sold out house at La Sala Rossa. The lineup was Valleys (formerly There Were Valleys), MGMT and Yeasayer. “All Hour Cymbals” has been on shuffle for the past couple of weeks and had I got my hands on it last year it would have made my “Best Of” list of 2007. The Bruises On The Face Don’t Bother Me At All 2008-02-09 09:30:28 Two weeks ago I got to check out one of Sweden’s finest musical exports, Peter Bjorn and John. They were billed for Osheaga last summer but instead canceled to attend some poorly judged music awards show. Anyway, they didn’t win and they came back. I caught their show at Le National back in May of [...]
I See You Standing All By Yourself 2008-02-05 21:43:53 We here at Trendwhore are ecstatic for the opportunity not only to have our first interview, but to have it with the one, the only, Henry Rollins. There’s a Hole in the Roof & The Rain’s Comin’ In 2008-01-21 21:32:45 There’s way too much bad music being released these days. The reason, as I see it, is that bands (and their money-sign managers) keep trying to produce albums that sound exactly like other formulaic albums of the time. As far as the music goes, we are generally stuck in a time of [...] Read more:Comin
Saw Your Dark Eyes Shine Like The City Skyline 2008-01-15 15:06:58 Victoria B.C.’s Ladyhawk have been making some headlines across the intertubes the past few weeks as they prepare to release their “Pinkerton“. I gave my ears an early listen of the upcoming album titled Shots and I’m thrilled with it. I’ve spent many days with their 2006 self-titled release on repeat and I’m sure Shots [...] Read more:Shine

2007 In Review : Best Albums [brockmasterflex] 2008-01-03 20:55:00 I’ve said it again and again that I would never let the blog slip, but the holidays kept me ever so busy. You Better Watch Out You Better Beware 2008-03-25 20:55:13 The Wipers are a band from Portland Oregon, currently on hiatus, that formed in the late 70’s by Greg Sage and were a huge influence on 80’s and 90’s punk/grunge movement they were very much ahead of their time. There Is Nothing I’d Like To Steal 2008-04-07 22:12:00 Seattle’s Throw Me The Statue played at Zoobizarre last night. The venue holds about 80 people uncomfortably and is probably the smallest venue I have ever seen a show in. Dan Griffin and The Regrets opened first. They are a folk/alt-country band from Toronto. Dan reminds me of Jeff Tweedy live. They are currently touring [...] Read more:Nothing

Tapes n’ Tapes Pay Their Fare 2008-04-07 15:30:20 OK, I admit, it’s been a while since I listened to a record start-to-finish. I’m guilty of plucking songs from good albums for my Top 100 playlist – we’ve all done it. But the latest effort from Tapes

He’s Just A Compromising Fool 2008-04-10 10:28:24 Montreal is in such an electric mood these days. The Habs are making a playoff run and Toronto isn’t. Montrealers can’t be happier. The Dodos Cause Power Surges 2008-04-11 12:17:32 The Dodos are a San Fransisco guitar-drum duo who are nothing like The White Stripes.
