Sandwich Edition Sloppy Joes Oh I know, everyone has a family recipe for Sloppy Joe's and I'm sure ours aren't all that unusual, but they are a favorite here and considering that we always are pressed for time these are also easy! Makes them a huge hit in my book. Also, I cook up the ground beef ahead of time and put it in the freezer all I need to do is thaw in the microwave and add the rest

Thirteen Books On My List for Fall into Reading 2007 Katrina's Fall into Reading 2007 challenge begins on September 23rd and ends December 23rd. For the Spring Reading Thing I may have gotten a little carried away. I put sixteen books on my list and then went around and visited many other readers and got a few too many ideas. I thought for this fall a baker's dozen would be manageable, giving me

A Hideous Beauty
2007-09-19 21:11:00
I received a copy of A Hideous Beauty today in the mail from Glass Road Public Relations today. It has some really nice reviews and looks to be an exciting read. I am putting it on my Fall into Reading list and will give my opinion after I read it. For now here is the publishers promotion and an interview with the author. Award-winning Jack Cavanaugh engages readers in his latest release, A

Works for Me Wednesday

Picky eaters can be a pain. My kids aren't really fond of Oriental cooking, but can be persuaded to try different tastes and textures if given chopsticks!! What other ways can you think of to make the menu interesting that doesn't have to do with the actual food? Good china? Have a picnic? Candle light? I'd love to hear some of your suggestions. For more Works for Me Wednesday ideas visit

Prairie School by Avi Recently Boo read Prairie School by Avi for his Silent Sustained Reading (assigned reading), but this would also make a wonderful read aloud book. Nine year old Noah has come with his parents to the Colorado prairie. Noah loves his life, his work and his freedom on the prairie, but his parents want more for him. His mother’s sister travels by train from the east coast to

Menu Plan Monday
2007-09-16 21:22:00
Fall is around the corner and the race is on. There is no way I can "land" at home near 7 each night and just "throw something together" (my favorite method). The seat of my pants is going to get a rest and I am going to start planning menus again. With all the activity we will need to have balanced menus to stay healthy. So I am picking up again with Menu Plan Monday with the help of Laura and

Grains of Gratitude

The calendar says it is still summer, but the weather this week said, “FALL!” And I love fall. The forecast predicts we will be returning to warmer weathers, but I am grateful for this little break. Sometimes the weather can readjust our attitudes and focus us forward to the upcoming season. I am grateful to live where the season changes are so obvious and most often dramatic. I complain about

My "Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad" Thursday Thirteen 1. I couldn’t think of thirteen anything to string together coherently—so you are stuck with this. 2. The boys are both sick. Still. 3. And we still HAVE to go somewhere tonight. 4. I’ve had a headache since yesterday. Which means I am likely to get sick. 5. School has not been normal since before…well before mid-August. 6. I am

I didn’t post as much as I thought I might last week. Life seemed to require a lot from me and while I tried to catch up on my bloggy reading and commenting I didn’t get to visit everyone I wanted to and I really didn’t post much. But it was again a week filled with wonderful things to be grateful for. The boys went back to dancing. I try not to boast often but I am incredibly proud of my young

Children's Book Monday--Frances
2007-09-02 23:09:00
We've had these for a long time. And truth be told they are not politically correct. And of course my children quote the least PC line of the book Bedtime for Frances, “Whack and smack. Whack and smack…” which is followed IN THE BOOK by, “made Frances think of a sp@nking” but no………my children will run around and giggle and hysterically laugh, “Sounds like a sp@nking to ME!!!” Leading people not

Landing— I feel like I have returned from another planet. And I feel like I have been gone a lifetime. So much happened in such a relatively short period of time. There were times when I thought five or six hours had gone by and was surprised that only twenty minutes had passed. Other times I was sure that I had only been somewhere for a moment and hours had gone by. My computer sat untouched

Grains of Gratitude

What a difference a week makes. To quote another cliché, life changes in a blink of an eye. One breath you have both feet on earth and the next breath can be drawn on the other side, hopefully in heaven, meeting the LORD. My mother changed her address this week from a shell on earth to glory in heaven. I am grateful for the life she led and I hope I can learn from her example. After over three

Amazing Satisfaction

Homeschool catalogs can be my downfall. They can confuse me with their wonderful & tempting book list. They can convince me that if I use their method of teaching my children will become “more educated” even though their educational style does not mesh with my children’s style of learning or my style of teaching. Most of all they make me feel like I need to spend more money. That said, I love to

What is it about fall that makes me feel like baking, cooking and most of all eating? Flavors are so important, what would food be without them. How thin would I be if eating didn’t have such appeal—note to self, “quit using flavorful food & flavorings.” No, that’s not right…I just need to learn the ever so important word—MODERATION. So I give you: Thirteen flavors with which I wish I did not

Progressive Apple Peeler Well, really it works for Grandpa (my dad). The last few days we've been blessed with a visit from Grandpa. The boys have been hitting balls at the driving range, visiting a historical farm, and making apple pies. Grandpa wanted to make pies with his boys! So he figured we'd have what he wanted in the big city to make them...well all but one thing--he packed his apple
