Tokyo Motor Show 2007: 37 Models Premieres by Toyota, other Automakers
2007-09-22 04:27:51
Sept. 20 (Bloomberg) — Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and other automakers will unveil a total of 37 car models at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, aiming to stem drop in sales in the world’s third-largest auto market. The number of world-premiere vehicles was released in a statement by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association today. Japanese carmakers plan to use the exhibition to stimulate auto demand in their home market, where sales slumped for 17 months through August. The Tokyo Motor show, one of the five biggest international auto exhibitions, will feature both passenger cars and commercial vehicles at the same time for the first time in 10 years. Domestic sales of cars, trucks and buses may fall 1.9 percent to 5.63 million units this year from 5.74 million in 2006, the auto group forecasts. That’s down 28 percent from an all-time high of 7.78 million in 1990. The tally fell 7.4 percent to 3.63 million for the first eight months of this year, according

BMW Concept CS Heading to 2007 Australian Motor Show on Sydney
2007-09-19 10:29:56
BMW’s sleek and stunning Concept CS is confirmed for October’s Australian International Motor Show at Sydney ’s Darling Harbour. After wowing audiences on debut at the Shanghai Motor Show in April, the BMW Concept CS will be a headline act at the 2007 Sydney  Auto Show, where it will be making its first Southern Hemisphere appearance. Concept CS will be the centerpiece of BMW’s stand, where the much-anticipated new generation M3 Coupe will also make its Australian debut. Australians are rarely given the chance to see BMW’s concept cars. The last one to visit this country was the Z9 Convertible in 2000. A four-door luxury sports tourer, Concept CS is predominantly a styling exercise, but what show-goers see will likely be reflected in BMW’s production models of the near future. “Concept CS is a further development of our design language,” said BMW AG Chairman, Dr Norbert Reithofer. “With our last leap in design a few years ago, we

Lotus 2-Eleven Track Star To Debut At Sydney Show 2007
2007-09-19 08:49:48
Super fast and easy to drive, the Lotus 2-Eleven track racer is coming. The light, lithe and wickedly fast Lotus 2-Eleven will make its Australian debut and officially go on sale at the 2007 Australian International Motor Show in October. As the fastest production Lotus ever, the 2-Eleven has been confirmed as the centre-piece of the Lotus stand at the Sydney Show. This will be the Australian public’s first chance to see the halo car for the Lotus brand. This car will also be the first public production 2-Eleven to come from the UK factory, where Lotus plans to build 100 of the 2-Elevens annually. Lauded by the English press, the Lotus 2-Eleven’s power-to-weight ratio of 3.9kg/kW not only puts it on par with 1960s Formula One cars, it compares and eclipses many current supercars up to five times its price. The 2-Eleven produces 188kW at a high 8000rpm combined with a low weight of just 745kg. Here’s what’s already been said about the 2-Eleven: “A very,

2007 Tokyo Motor Show Preview: Mazda’s Rotary Coupe
2007-09-19 00:11:40
Word from inside the pages of an unnamed Japanese auto mag is that this Mazda ’s concept-inspired rotary coupe car will debut on the Mazda stand at this year’s 2007 Tokyo Motor Show next month. The coupe is obviously inspired by the trio of concepts that Mazda debuted on the auto show circuit last year: the Nagare, Ryuga and Kabura concepts. While we don’t know if these pics are official from Mazda or merely renderings produced by the magazine, we can tell you that at least the head on shot is a touched up version of a Kabura sketch. In fact, the entire car looks mostly like a production version of the Kabura Concept, though it features cues from all three concepts. Though it’s not known whether it would be front- or rear-wheel drive, the article is reported to mention that it would be powered by the next generation of Mazda’s rotary engine, the RENESIS(2), which itself will incorporate the first increase in displacement of a Mazda rotary engine from

FRANKFURT SHOW: Brilliance Quietly Spread Around Europe
2007-09-18 11:27:16
While controversy reigned briefly last week at the China Automobile stand, Brilliance, the other Chinese auto maker at the 2007 Frankfurt motor show, quietly continued to tick all the right boxes. Following a well-received launch at Geneva in March, Brilliance has now started selling cars in Europe and launched a fourth new model, the BS2, at Frankfurt. The company has also overcome its first setback - a poor showing in crash testing for its first model, the BS6 sedan. This gained only one EuroNCAP star but Brilliance has rectified the situation by ordering a rapid redesign. Independent tests suggest the car will now gain three stars, something that pleased Hans-Ulrich Sachs, head of Brilliance’s European distributor HSO Motors Europe. Sachs knows the car business - he launched Hyundai in Germany in 1991, he’s been a senior brand manager for Volkswagen, and he’s been CEO of Germany’s largest Ford dealer. Brilliance is BMW’s assembler in China, and signed

Mitsubishi Show Its Tokyo Motor Show Concepts
2007-09-18 07:15:36
The world seems pretty engrossed with the Frankfurt auto show right now, so much so that another major international auto show has been completely overshadowed. The 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, which is set to go on in less than a month will see the introduction of many new and important concepts and models that will predict what’ll be on the roads of the future. So, let’s take a break from Germany and have a look at what Mitsubishi will be showing off to its home market. The first big introduction will be the Concept-ZT. It’s a striking looking sedan that takes inspiration from the Lancer sports sedan, a car that is really helping to give the brand a true, defined image. At 194.9 inches long, with a wheelbase of 110.8 inches, the ZT is quite a large car, which might be a hint that this could be the replacement to the Galant, or perhaps even the introduction of a new large sedan that would take the spot of the defunct Diamante.   The Mitsubishi ZT is powered by a brand ne

Frankfurt Motor Show Spy: Nissan Mixim Concept and Micra
2007-09-18 06:13:42
2007 Frankfurt Motor Show Spy shot series: Nissan Corp. Nissan has hinted at its future intentions with details of a shorter, lower take on the small city run-around, to be shown at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Aimed at younger drivers and based on a production chassis, the Mixim concept weighs 950kg and features some design features normally associated with supercars. Inside, the concept has a seat layout as found on the McLaren F1, with the driver positioned centrally and two heavily sculpted passenger seats either side. The car also boasts gull-wing doors which, although unlikely to ever make production - as is the car itself (according to Nissan) - still look the part. The Mixim has several ‘diamond’-shaped design cues found on air intakes toward the rear and the impractical yet entirely concept-like rear windows. Nissan has also fitted two ‘Super Motors’ to drive the front and rear axles, making the car four-wheel drive; most likely a technological exerci

2007 Frankfurt Spy: Bentley Continental GT
2007-09-17 12:19:08
2007 Frankfurt Motor Show spy shots series: Bentley Continental GT . It’s not as though the ’standard’ Bentley Continental GT is underpowered - far from it. But Bentley has seen fit to enhance the car’s specification further, offering a new ‘Speed’ model with 600bhp from its W12 engine. Bentley’s Chairman and CEO, Dr Franz Josef-Paefgen, speaks modestly of the new model, but must be just as excited as the rest of us: “The Continental GT is a modern-day Bentley icon. The new GT Speed, with its harder-edged character and sportier driving experience, builds on this success.” The GT Speed is said to be inspired by the ‘Speed’ models first introduced nearly 85 years ago. Even then, W.O. Bentley, the company’s founder, knew there would be no shortage of takers for a very high performance derivative of a successful existing model - that hasn’t changed, even if the owners have. Bentley’s latest model retains t

The Audi A1, which will come in coupe and speedster forms as pictured bottom, is predicted to make its first public appearance at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show 2007, later this year. 2008 Lexus GS 460 and 450h Hybrid Official Release
2007-09-07 19:53:08
As Lexus updated the 2008 Lexus GS a few days ago, but Toyota has released a slew of official high-res images and all the specs on its midlevel luxury sedan and hybrid counterpart. For 2008, the GS 430 has been cancelled and replaced with the GS 460 sporting a 4.6L V8 producing 342 hp and 339 ft-lbs of torque. The bigger motor is also mated to Lexus’ eight-speed transmission. The GS 350 retains its 3.5L V6 that produces a still respectable 303 hp and 274 ft-lbs. of torque. While all-wheel drive is available on the GS 350, it makes do with a mere six-speed auto. As we learned a few days ago, the Lexus 2008 GS line has received a minor refresh that focuses on its front end. Specifically, a new lower bumper with different air intakes, new grille with chrome surround, and sharper styling for the inset driving lights have been added. The interior has also been updated with a dash that appears much simpler with which to interface. That new nav screen at 800×480 pixels is partic

2007 Frankfurt Auto Show Preview: Renault Laguna Coupe Concept
2007-09-07 19:21:53
The Renault Laguna Coupe Concept  is expecting to be unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show next Tuesday. It’s based on the new Laguna platform that’s already spawned a Laguna sedan. We are going to see the production version of the sedan in person for the first time in Frankfurt Auto Show 2007, and the Coupe Concept, which is also likely headed for production, will be right beside it. There’s no official press release from Renault yet, so we can’t tell you details like power and fuel economy numbers about this Laguna coupe concept, but we can comment on the car’s design. The Laguna Coupe Concept sports extremely clean sheetmetal with character lines that flow uninterrupted around the whole vehicle. The surface detail is subtle but there, hidden by the color of the car until revealed by a contrast of light and shadow. No doubt a simple design, the Laguna Coupe Concept is still refreshing in its minimalism. One could argue, however, that it’s also

In addition to announcing that it will invest roughly $100 million in a new facility in Herndon, Virginia, the company is expected to outline plans to develop more models for the U.S. market, the story said. The move is part of a broader effort by Europe’s largest automaker by sales volume to revitalize its money-losing U.S. operations and be closer to its traditional customers on the East Coast. + Ford Kuga 4×4 Hits the Road Spy Shot + Frankfurt Motor Show 2007 Preview: BioConcept Mustang GT RTD + 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show Preview: Mercedes-Benz S300 BLUETEC Hybrid + 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML 450 Hybrid come to Frankfurt + Volvo’s 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show Car:ReCharge PHEV Concept + 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show: 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML 450 Hybrid + Porsche Cayenne GTS Official Image for Frankfurt Motor Show 2007 + Aston Martin V8 Vantage N400 and DB9 LM j

Ford Kuga 4×4 Hits the Road Spy Shot
2007-09-07 13:31:30
Ford’s sensational SUV has blasted off – and we have the first pictures and full details. It’s here at last – Ford’s new 4×4 has broken cover. These are the first official pictures of the Focus-based off-roader, the Kuga, which is set to go on sale early next year. Following on from the exciting Verve – the stunning replacement for the Fiesta, which we revealed in last week’s issue – and the sleek new Mondeo, the sporty SUV shows that style really is at the top of agenda at Ford. Initially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September last year as the Iosis X, and later with some official sketches, the showroom-ready Kuga is every inch as attractive as the original concept. With its bold, twin-split trapezoidal grilles, huge headlights and lower protective metal tray, the Kuga has plenty of visual presence. That’s complemented by chunky wheelarches, large alloys and a raised ride height. The rising waistline forms distinctive angular C-pillars, while at

Mitsubishi Three Concepts For Tokyo Motor Show
2007-09-07 12:27:27
As all the concern surrounding the next week’s 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, we were a little surprised to see this announcement from Mitsubishi revealing its lineup for next month’s 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. Mitsubishi will have three new concepts on show, the first being a new electric vehicle labeled the i MiEV Sport. Based on the current i MiEV, the new sports concept features in-wheel electric motors and the carmaker’s trademark S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control). Other modern features of the concept include its aluminum space frame construction, lithium-ion batteries and LED details. The car features two 20kW motors up front with a combined torque of 250Nm and one motor up back churning out 47kW and 180Nm of torque. Top speed is a claimed 180km/h and the car’s driving range is rated at 200km. The next show car is the Concept-ZT sedan, powered by a 2.2L clean-diesel engine mated to the new dual-clutch SST gearbox. The new diesel engine develops 140kW and maximum torque of 400 Nm. Th

Frankfurt Motor Show 2007 Preview: BioConcept Mustang GT RTD
2007-09-07 12:04:39
The 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show is a strange place for the unveiling of a biofuel powered American muscle car but that in fact will be the case when Germany’s FourMotor presents its new BioConcept Mustang GT RTD at next week’s 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. Though labelled a concept, the car has been raced in the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race by former DTM driver Thomas von Löwis and is scheduled to continue competing long after the Frankfurt show closes its doors. Powering the car is a 280hp (206kW) 2.0L four-banger developing maximum torque of 500Nm on pure bio-diesel, which is enough for it to reach a top speed of 245km/h. The car’s chassis is based on a Ford Mustang but the panels have been replaced with a new plastic shell derived from natural plant fibers developed in co-operation with Germany’s center for air and space travel. Also on display will be a bio-diesel Volkswagen Beetle that was tested doing speeds of up to 230km/h around the Nürburgring. + 2007 Frankfurt Aut

The luxury unit of Nokia has started selling a phone designed jointly with Ferrari for about 18,000 euros ($25,400) at its stores in London, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore, it said on Thursday. The Vertu unit produced the Ascent Ferrari 60 phone to celebrate Ferrari’s 60th anniversary. “We worked very closely to develop this limited edition of 60 phones. Volkswagen wants American drivers to know about diesels. Especially its clean diesels and how they can help the environment. To spread the word, VW begins its Dieselution Tour today, pulling an educational trailer around the country and setting up shop at environmental events. Inside, computer screens and displays showcase the benefits of diesels and ask visitors to take a “sustainability quiz” or measure their car’s carbon footprint. The message is far from subtle: Clean diesels can help the environment and save you money. “We want to show Americans that today’s clean diesel technology is a quantum leap from the powerplants introduced nearly 30 years ago,” said Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen of America. Toyota’s Lexus May Add More Powerful Hybrids
2007-09-28 07:16:50
Toyota Motor Corp’s Lexus , the top-selling luxury brand in the U.S., is planning to build more high-performance gas-electric hybrid models to reach newer customers, who want some sporty vehicles while being environmentally friendly. Lexus may build such gasoline-electric models to reach “enthusiast groups” outside its core market, General Manager Jim Farley of Lexus said this week. More-powerful Lexus hybrid models may help Toyota extend its hybrid dominance in the United States, with 78 percent of the market. The world’s biggest maker of hybrids helped boost 2007 U.S. sales of the vehicles by 44 percent through August, based on data from Bloomberg and Autodata Corp. Lexus sells about 20,000 hybrids annually in the United States, including the RX 400h SUV as the image below.   “There is a huge opportunity for a luxury-car company to be seen as a solution provider in terms of getting away from carbon pollution and heavy reliance on oil,” said Farley,

Ford Delay F-150 Truck Production For Short of Logistical Supply
2007-09-26 10:08:58
As a vital supplier’s logistical problems, resulting in the short of needed parts to make trucks, Ford’s Dearborn truck plant had to stop the Ford F-150 Truck production, and workers at Dearborn truck plant were sent home yesterday. Suppliers are the lifeblood of the auto industry and automakers, automakers can do little without the parts produced by supplier partners. The workers of Ford’s Dearborn truck plant were told not to return work until Thursday, which would leave Ford with about two days of lost production of its best-selling vehicle. Ford’s Kansas City assembly plant has also been affected by the parts problem. The F-150 disruption has little to do with the GM strike, and due to the soft truck market, the lost production probably won’t hurt as badly as it would have a year ago. One thing is for certain, however: it must suck to be the supplier that caused this gargantuan screwup. + Maserati Granturismo Sports Coupe Lightening on Australian Motor

Auto Green: Volkswagen Offer Hybrid Entire Lineup
2007-09-24 11:43:51
Following the Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen is going to offer a hybrid option on its entire future lineup including both mild and full hybrid systems. In addition to its hybrid onslaught, VW also plans to expand its range of ultra-efficient BlueMotion diesels and could one day have it as an option for its full lineup as well. There’s even talk of an all-electric vehicle based on the recently revealed up! minicar concept. The news comes from VW’s product development Chief Ulrich Hackenberg, who spoke recently with Automobilwoche. According to Hackenberg, VW’s new rear-engine small car will enter production in 2011 and will be offered “in both a full and mild hybrid.” As for the BlueMotion range, Hackenberg revealed the next car to get the clean-diesel treatment will be the upcoming Tiguan SUV (pictured) and possibly the Eos convertible.
