Three Jewelry Designers from London Fashion Week 2007-09-20 13:25:02
Walking around the accessories section of the London Fashion
Week show over the last few days, a noticeable trend of delicate jewelery caught our attention. With long chains, floating butterflies, intricately wrought wood and metal, beautiful combinations of materials and ethereal detailing, each piece seemed to have a romantic story of its own, as though they were born from fairytales. Known for her wonderful combinations of words and imagery, this season of British designer Amy Anderson’s Comfort Station line explores the concept of poison. Anderson embraces an ornate Victorian style with darkly beautiful lockets, chains and laser-cut wood. (Read the full post about ‘ThreeJewelryDesigners

Ugly Shoe of the Week: “Why, God, Why?????” Edition 2007-09-20 11:52:01
Ugly Shoe
of the Week: &ldquo
;Why, God, Why?????&rdquo
; Edition
Ok. I get it. Ruffles are in. But Marc? Mr Jacobs? Are you listening? This time you’ve gone too far. Now, I’m all for high fashion footwear, but this is ridiculous. I’m begging you, Marc, stop producing such ugly boots! I thought you’d take heed after our last few chats, but it seems that tact is no longer in play here, and now it’s time for some tough love. To be blunt: your ’suede ruffle boots’ make even a “size zero” mannequin look disproportionately chunky and disfigured. Surely you realise that any sensible woman wouldn’t embellish a basic (but fabulous) pair of platform heels with… a… well… suede attachment thingamajig?!? Shellys appear to have taken inspiration from Chloe with these ‘Wonder’ flats 2007-09-20 11:45:09 Shellys appear
to have taken inspiration from Chloe
with these &lsquo
;Wonder’ flats
The designers at Shellys certainly seem to have been inspired by designer fashion with these ‘Wonder’ strappy flats, because they seem remarkably similar to the triple strap flats worn by Kate Bosworth a few months ago, which were by Chloe. The similarities? Round toe, three straps (one an ankle strap), available in tan and involving gold buckle detail. The differences? Well you can also buy the high street version in black and, erm, blue snake, and they’ll cost you just £30.

Stella McCartney floral print wedges on sale 2007-09-20 11:40:41 StellaMcCartney
floral print wedges on sale End of season clearance usually spells horror for me. I used to be a total sale junkie, but now I find no inspiration from the dregs of past season. Call me a snob, but it’s often a futile endeavour. My saving grace while trawling the Net-a-Porter clearance stock, however, came in the form of these pretty wedges from Stella McCartney
. These are very gorgeous, a perfect pair of wedges. They won’t suffer too much from season crossover either thanks to the monochrome colours. Designer shoes always come at a price, and the sale doesn’t make too sizeable a dent unfortunately. This pair can be yours for £220.50. Purple patent heels by Celine at Zappos 2007-09-20 11:33:30 Purple
patent heels by Celine
at Zappos Something about these patent purple offerings by Celine make me think of a wrapped Christmas present, all glossy and shiny and finished off with a bow. $589.86 (why not just $589?) may seem like a lot of money to part with for a pair of shoes…in fact, who am I kidding - it is! But who wants to be practical about things when you’ve got thousands of gorgeous shoes (and a few ugly ones chucked in for good measure) to gawp at? Nope, in the land of beautiful footwear, close to $600 dollars seems more than reasonable to spend on these beauties. Right, who’s up for lending me $579.86? The slouchy, heeled ‘Bianca’ boot by Banana Republic 2007-09-20 11:26:13
The slouchy, heeled &lsquo
;Bianca
’ boot by Banana Republic
So Shoewawa’s Orla isn’t a big fan of slouchy boots or heeled boots… but I am! (Sorry, darling, I love the knee high flats you posted still!) I daresay I own a pair of boots almost exactly like these - with the western cut upper, slouched middle, pull-on fit, stacked three inch heel… in a yummy shade of dark brown. Sometimes they’re quite a pain to pull on, but once I’m putting together my outfit (yes, I dress from shoes up too, girls!) I think the versatility that these boots offer makes the initial hurdle absolutely worthwhile. Jeans, tee, cute bomber jacket…done! Out the door. US$138 (down from US$198) for this ‘Bianca’ boot by Banana Republic. (Read the full post about ‘The slouchy, heeled ‘Bianca’ boot by Banana Republic’…)

Hands up if you’re still wearing cowboy boots 2007-09-20 11:15:22 Hands
up if you’re still wearing
cowboy boots Cowboy boots were absolutely massive a couple of years ago, and while they’re still on the shelves of many a popular shoe shop I’ve not seen them on a foot in quite some time. So, are you still an avid fan? I’m certain there are people out there who wore them before the fashion surge and still continue to do so. Where are you? This is your chance to defend the humble cowboy boot. While my dislike of boots is now common knowledge, these are a design I’m willing to let live. I never owned them when they were ‘high fashion’, but that doesn’t make them any less of a design classic. If you’re still sporting them you can update your wardrobe with this pair from Office for £85. (Read the full post about ‘Hands up if you’re still wearing cowboy boots’…)
Woman Within’s plus-size calf boots - no more sore legs! 2007-09-20 11:07:49
Woman Within’s plus-size calf boots - no more sore legs! Knee-high boots are the bane of many a woman’s life, because as if it wasn’t hard enough to find styles to fit your feet, you suddenly have to find yourself some boots that fit your legs, too - and that can be easier said than done. For anyone who’s ever turned blue in the face from the effort of pulling up a zip that just. won’t. fit, Woman Within’s range of plus-size calf boots could be manna from heaven. There are a few different styles to choose from, (the ones shown are from the Via Accent range, where prices are from $49.99 - $64.99) all with calves which either stretch to fit or come in different widths to suit different leg shapes. How much care do you take of your feet? 2007-09-20 11:05:28
How much care do you take of your feet? While browsing through the photos of shoes at London Fashion Week I couldn’t help but notice the truly awful state of some of the models’ feet. Callouses, broken toenails, chipped nail polish - and that was just one model! Of course, catwalk models have a harder time than most (no, really) when it comes to shoes, because they don’t always have the luxury of a perfect fit, and sometimes have to force their poor feet into whatever size is available. The rest of us, though, have no such excuse, and so I’m wondering: how much care do you take of your feet? Personally, I’m a big fan of the pedicure, even if it’s just a DIY one at home. Stuart Weitzman’s ‘Just So’ brown slingbacks with platform sole and peep toe 2007-09-28 17:01:58 StuartWeitzman
’s &lsquo
;Just So’ brown slingbacks with platform sole and peep toe Ok, so admittedly Stuart Weitzman
’s ‘Just So’ brown calf platform slingbacks probably aren’t the most practical choice of footwear in the world as we head towards winter, but these are so gorgeous that they’re worth buying and saving until the weather is more suitable. Priced at US$171 from Bluefly, they’re mid brown in colour with slingback detail and calfskin uppers. Go on… you know you want to! Menswear inspired shoes: Belle by Sigerson Morrison stiletto heeled oxford booties 2007-09-28 16:27:59 Menswear
inspired shoes
: Belle
by Sigerson Morrison
stiletto heeled oxford booties The menswear inspired shoe trend continues, and thus far this Belle by Sigerson Morrison stiletto oxford (US$295) is the most feminine incarnation I’ve seen. I’m quite fond of the black version, but I feel that the visibility is somehow lacking, and that the cute design isn’t as apparant as it could be. In the gray version, however, the suede and laces, sleek lines, contoured shape all complement each other quite well. The soft color and delicate shape are unmistakably feminine, while the top laces and oxford design are quite cutting-edge trendy. Stuart Weitzman tries and fails with his Patent Cutout Booties 2007-09-28 16:12:03 StuartWeitzmantries
and fails with his Patent
Cutout Booties It’s never long after a trend comes along that designers who didn’t get there first start chopping the crap out of it. In my experience, this rarely trumps the original and that pretty much sums up my feelings on Stuart Weitzman
’s Patent Cutout Booties. He appears to have taken the classic brogue/oxford boot and given it a bit of sass and originality by firstly making it patent and then making odd cutouts. I’m afraid it really falls down in the style stakes for me. Mixing genres like this basically Victorian inspired shoe with modern twists is a tricky business. I think Stuart should go back to the drawing board. (Read the full post about ‘Stuart Weitzman tries and fails with his Patent Cutout Booties’…)
Anglepoise Play 2007-09-28 14:23:27
Among the newest, hottest creations in town at the London Design Festival this year, we happily noted that others were taking time to celebrate an old classic—albeit in new ways of course. Anglepoise, a lamp that’s required little tweaking in the over 70 years it’s been in production, is one of the brands that’s found ways to playfully reinterpret their classic design as of late. At 100% Design, Anglepoise presented two new versions of the lamp by British designer Kenneth Grange to celebrate 70 years of the original. Type1227 subtly reinterprets the original, while Type1228 adds a handsome green shade, showing how effective subtle changes in form and color can be. (Read the full post about ‘Anglepoise Play’…)
Kakawa Cocoa Beans 2007-09-28 14:10:22
With the look of fossilized dinosaur eggs, Kakawa CocoaBeans
represents chocolate in five different delicious forms. Covered in layers of white, milk and dark chocolates and finished off with a dusting of velvety cocoa powder, the roasted whole Criollo/Trinitario cocoa bean (some of the best in the world) in the middle provides a satisfying and needed crunch. We like the way you can really taste the different types of chocolates in waves of distinct flavors. Authentic, rich and with great contrasting textures, the Kakawa Cocoa Bean is available for $28 per 12 oz. bag from Cocoa Puro. (Read the full post about ‘Kakawa Cocoa Beans’…)
Marc by Marc Jacobs - for the woman who needs wellies 2007-09-28 09:46:05
Marc by Marc Jacobs
- for the woman
who needs wellies If I’m going to have to buy a pair of wellies this year (which I strongly suspect I will) then it’s going to be a posh pair. No cheap wellies for this shoe lover! This nice understated pair is from Marc by Marc Jacobs
, and though I’m attracted to pink boots with hearts (or similar) I think I’m grown up enough for something plain. The colour is fog and they cost US$190. (Read the full post about ‘Marc by Marc Jacobs - for the woman who needs wellies’…)
Versace’s zipped bootie pumps, available from eLUXURY 2007-09-28 09:38:44
Versace’s zipped bootie pumps
, available
from eLUXURY As has been reported a couple of times recently, it seems that the current boot du jour is Versace’s zipped bootie pump available at eLUXURY. Priced at nearly US$2000, they’re made from leather and feature a rounded toe, silver zipper with logo-engraved pull, leather lining, metallic leather sole and a 5.5 inch stiletto heel. Far out of my price range and probably impossible to walk in, expect to see them on the feet of the likes of Mrs Beckham sometime soon! Sergio Rossi loves zips and rubber, as shown by these black high heeled ‘Farisa’ court shoes 2007-09-28 09:27:06 SergioRossi
loves zips and rubber, as shown by these black high heeled &lsquo
;Farisa’ court shoes
When I first saw these I thought they looked a little odd. I couldn’t work out what the heel and sole were made of and I really couldn’t decide on the decorative zip. It turns out the heel and sole are rubber and I’ve learned to love the zip. Of course, that fact that they’re the ‘Farisa’ from Sergio Rossi
helps. If Sergio Rossi wants to use rubber and zips then that’s okay with me, but sadly I don’t have US$693.95 to spend on them. (Read the full post about ‘Sergio Rossi loves zips and rubber, as shown by these black high heeled ‘Farisa’ court shoes’…)
Boots with bows on the toes - why Anthropologie, why? 2007-09-28 09:11:23 Boots
with bows on the toes - why Anthropologie, why? I couldn’t wear these boots. They’re a great colour, the heel’s a nice height and the calves look quite roomy (a requirement for me!) But what’s with those bows on the toes? They’d drive me mad. I know I’d just be able to see them from the corner of my eye and keep wondering what was stuck to my boot. The bow aside though, I do like these ‘Keepsake’ cocoa leather boots, US$288, from Anthropologie. (Read the full post about ‘Boots with bows on the toes - why Anthropologie, why?’…)

’ red daisy rain boots ‘m rarely attracted to wellies, but these I’ll have to make a special exception for. I’m quite taken by the bursts of red petals on the off-white background, which is somehow kept from being too messy by a neat black and white striping effect at the soles. An extremely practical buckle at the top of the boot allows easy adjustment to calf-size fits, and looks quite smart, too! Waterproof, of course, just in time for some rainy weather dregs, even in sunny California. US$125 for the kate spade ‘Riley’ red daisy boot. (Read the full post about ‘More wellies! Britney Spears Believe ~ fragrance review 2007-10-03 11:25:46
It’s an aspirational thing–consumers can buy into the celebrity’s lifestyle by wearing their fragrance. They can feel and smell like celebrities. — Mary Ellen Lapsansky of the Fragrance Foundation, quoted in Celebrities fill up the fragrance counter. That’s the standard explanation for the widespread appeal of celebrity fragrances, but I’ve always had a hard time with it. Your average “celebrity lifestyle” seems more likely to stand as a dire warning to be very careful what you wish for, or as an illustration of the age-old adage that money doesn’t buy happiness. Whatever your stance on the subject, BritneySpears
, whose latest fragrance, Believe, is currently launching in stores, may have a hard time finding buyers for her lifestyle at the moment. (Read the full post about ‘Britney Spears

Apple sued over $200 iPhone discount 2007-10-03 10:52:12
It was bound to happen sooner or later. A lady from New York named Dongmei Li, who bought her iPhone
three days after the official release on July 29 is now suing Apple
for $1 million because of the $200 price cut from last month, accusing Apple of discrimination, underselling and deceptive actions. Apparently, she thinks that the iPhone is now too cheap, saying that the $599 price was a more reasonable one. Obviously, she has no idea what’s she’s talking about and that she’s only suing to get some money. Steve Jobs offered iPhone buyers a $100 Apple store credit after the announcement of the price drop and a $200 refund for those that purchased the phone within 14 days of the price drop. SOPHIA KOKOSALAKI 2007-10-03 09:20:50
Scan Sophia Kokosalaki’s show, and you will find—if you’re keeping up out there—a collection punctuated with pieces that are spot-on for the Spring agenda. Working backward, first isolate her diaphanous, white tiered crinkle-pleated gown—an Aphrodite apparition that could propel an event-bound nymphet to a moment of quiet glory. Note, too, Kokosalaki’s attention to pants. Flared may be the general way to go this season, yet few have come up with a trouser as optically flattering as the sharp, long-leggedy pair she put under her lean, skinny tank. Casting around for a jacket with an emphatic shoulder? Or a loose T-shirt dress? She had those figured out, too. (Read the full post about ‘SOPHIA KOKOSALAKI’…)
VIKTOR & ROLF 2007-10-03 09:07:25
“Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near? Just like me, they long to be close to you.” With Karen Carpenter on the loudspeakers, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren sent out a Harlequin Romance of a Spring collection…but not in the damsel-in-distress-with-her-corset-coming-undone paperback-novel-cover kind of way. It was the myriad double-entendre possibilities of their concept that engaged the surrealism-loving duo, and it made for a charming show. After opening with a white duchesse-satin jacket with a Pierrot collar and matching ultrawide pants, and working through several more monochromatic ruffled looks, out fluttered a clue: a long baby-pink dress with diamonds of black lace near the hem. (Read the full post about ‘VIKTOR & ROLF’…)
ANN DEMEULEMEESTER 2007-10-03 08:54:45
Ann Demeulemeester, to the relief of her many followers, is by nature a trend refusenik. She carved out her aesthetic—that slouchy, layered, definitively Belgian thing—long ago, but still, there’s always something subtly permeable about her parameters. This Spring, there’s a floppy flowiness to her masculine-feminine design that picks up a sense of the thirties, and plays on bold stripes, fringing, feathers, and languid washed satin. All this, of course, happens within the established template of Demeulemeester’s tailoring—monochromatic soft linen coat jackets, elongated vests, and pants. COMME DES GARÇONS 2007-10-03 08:43:55
Rei Kawakubo is one of the very few living designers who can command the rapt attention—even the adoration—of the inner fashion crowd by doing something deliberately demented on a runway. To describe: A projection of naïve anime cartoons was playing on the floor; a jerky soundtrack of circus whizbangs, rock ‘n’ roll, the theme from the James Bond films, and traditional Japanese tunes filled the air. Then a girl walked out, made up like a clown, in a pink patchwork pantsuit apparently created from square, synthetic ruffle-edged drink coasters. (Read the full post about ‘COMME DES GARÇONS’…)
TAO 2007-10-03 05:21:36
In a season of toga and tribal, Tao Kurihara offered her own expressive takes on the two. The lights went down and out streamed five girls, all wearing elegantly sculptural braided headpieces, all in lacy, frilly white cotton tops and bottoms or dresses, wrapped and draped and tucked around their narrow frames. The swaddled silhouette thus established, she moved on into florals, a sweet butterfly print, and rucksack browns and indigos. Dresses with floppy ruffles down the front, big puffy sleeves, and billowy skirts came to a focal point at the back, which was often bare. Other times, a long-sleeved shrug that barely grazed the shoulder blades topped a button-down blouse tucked into exaggerated bloomers. (Read the full post about ‘TAO’…)
BALENCIAGA 2007-10-03 05:08:03
“I’m exploring new territory, within the references of the house,” said Nicolas Ghesquière before the show. “I’ve done prints before, but I never went to the flowers.” So this was Balenciaga in full bloom: a splashy riot of hyper-gorgeous hydrangeas, pansies, peonies, daffodils, and anemones—some of them Cristobal’s own—but compressed into another of Ghesquière’s short-sharp revolutionary essays-in-couture technique. The shapes, with their standout shoulder lines, hand-span waists, and belled (almost panniered) hip volume, marched in on vertiginous knee-high woven-leather gladiator boots.
