Loving Bali Surf & Yoga 2007-10-20 06:34:10 We are still here and absolutely loving Bali! Alie went to a yoga workshop today and had the best time. I was going to go but when I read the description it seemed more about meditation and breathing than it did about working out; so I opted out at the last minute. When she got home she talked about how they bounced their energy balls. Sounded like I made the right choice. I was supposed to get wet today and take my first surfing lesson but it rained most of the day and I held up in our room watching dvds on the laptop and reading. Hopefully I can get the surfing thing going tomorrow but everyone says it will still be raining. Anyway, no sweat, even with the rain this place is awesome!
Check back soon as we have just finished working on the first Hobos in Love T-shirt! It is looking sweeeeet! Sure to be a killer piece of gear for any wardrobe. We are trying to think of a contest idea to give a few away. Taking suggestions. Also we are hoping to post some of our latest photos from Bal Read more:Loving

The sunset was a perfect cap to a fantastic day. The day was awesome because the Hobos had their first surfing lesson! It went great to say the least. Both Alie and I stood up and rode our first waves. Some of the waves were actually a bit tall, maybe 3 or 4 feet (not bad for true beginners) Our teacher was a local guy named Roy. He was super patient and very helpful. I was amazed because a few of the guys that ran the surf school said I did an excellent job and asked me if this was really my first time surfing! Take it from a chubby, not really athletic kid, this put a super-wide grin across my face and left it plastered there well into the night. Infact, the corners of my mouth are still slightly up-turned. I was pu
Hobos getting restless 2007-10-30 00:11:45 So we have been in Bali for two weeks and we are starting to long for the road again. It has been an amazing place to visit and the people here are super friendly. Yet as with any journey this part must come to an end. Alie and I are thinking that we should head North to China. It is our plan to fly back to Bangkok and spend a few days in the city sorting out our Chinese visas. Hopefully we will not have any problems getting back into Thailand courtesy of the large “overstayed visa” stamps in our passports! The immigration officers at the airport in Phuket said it would not be a problem if we wanted to come back but you never know.
I am looking forward to China as I think it will be much cooler and just maybe I will not be sweating every frickin’ second of the day! Our goal is to take the train across China and end up in Nepal. This is something that really excites me and I am majorly stoked to see the mountains and the temples. It has been a bit of a bummer that the
So long Bali… 2007-11-04 05:39:00 Tomorrow am the Hobos leave Bali to head back to Thailand, this time to explore Bangkok and it’s many wonders. We didn’t expect to go back to Thailand on this trip, but it makes sense because we want to head into China. We are thinking of taking the train up to Northern Loas and then from there head into Cambodia and then ride the rails through Vietnam. From there, head into China. We are happy for new sights and sounds. Bali has been a wonderful experience, from surfing and sunning in Kuta to exploring the many workshops in Ubud and the sea temple, Tanah Lot. It has proven to be a great place to visit for three weeks. But, as with any part of a long journey, our Balinese experience must come to a close. The people of Bali have been warm and the food is spicy and full of flavor. Some of the Hobos’ highlights include; Eating at Queens Tandoor Indian Restaurant and Sana Restaurant, Surfing at Kuta Beach and the sunset at Tanah Lot Temple. We are flying to Bang Read more:hellip

Hobos head to Laos 2007-11-07 01:06:05 We arrived in Bangkok after two short flights, one from Bali to Jakarta and then from Jakarta to Bangkok. We flew Air Asia again because it’s a great low-cost airline, the total trip cost about $150, which is very reasonable when you consider the distance we traveled. We got to our hostel which was part of the Hostel International Chain, the check in was very easy and the room was clean and bright. No pictures on the walls, which was a little ‘prison like’ but, the beds and pillows were exceptionally clean and comfortable. We even had a TV! It was nice not to have watched any TV in the last 3 weeks while we were in Bali. We relaxed for a few minutes before heading back out to explore the city and get some food. We were staying in a pretty commercial area and quickly found a restaurant and chowed down. As we were heading back to the hostel, we were shocked to see that a young elephant was walking towards us. Here we were in downtown Bangkok in front of a Lex

We are hoping to go back a little earlier to get some others. There were many young trainee Buddhist monks walking around and it would have been nice to get a few more pictures. Rich took the 3 best photos of the day though. Yesterday the weather was grey as we were under the threat of rain, so we stayed indoors most of the day. I don’t think either of us has really caught up on our sleep in the last week of heavy travel. Last night we both had a great sleep and are excited about moving on in the next 3 days! We captured some great video of the Vientiane market two days ago, which of course we hope to get up ASAP. Thanks to everyone who has written us on our travels so far!

There are not many other tourists and the prices are very low. Here is a picture I took with the little Sony cam. We walked past this monk on our way to finding the Chinese embassy. I saw him coming towards us for awhile and I had the camera ready to shoot as soon as we both passed each other. I am really happy with how it turned out!

The mountains we flew over were amazing and rarely did we ever see any buildings. I am not a huge fan of flying to start with and this plan ride was probably my least favorite to date! The turbulence on that trip was crazy! Also, the landing on the rain-soaked runway in China was the worst part. Glad to be here right now and blogging this!!!

City Streets, Kunming China

It was a cold stormy and rainy day as we set out to explore the large city of Kunming. We walked around excited to be an another country and also because the weather was much cooler than any where else we had been. This is a side street we stumbled upon and it was so perfect because it looked just like we thought China would. We must have walked for about 4 hours before finally finding a little pub to warm up and have a few beverages. There is no central heating here so the barman puts coals into a large pot and lights them up. It’s interesting because we were the only Westerners in the pub and everyone else was huddled around the glowing coals!
Rainy & Cold in China 2007-11-18 00:51:27 After a sleepless night in Vientiane, the Hobos were up at 4.30 am to catch a taxi to get to the airport on time. We arrived very early for our 6.30am flight so we had a cup of coffee and went through immigration easily. We walked around the small airport while we waited to board our plane. When we saw the ‘crop duster’ we were about to fly over the mountians of Northern Laos and into China
, we were both a little sketched out!! The pilot took no time in taking off and we have some great shots of the plane! Scary kiddies!! The plane had about 72 seats but only about 62 were occupied. The Hobos were 2 of 3 Westerners on board. We arrived after a very frightful landing because it is cold, rainy and blustering wind outside! We went through customs with no problems and arrived at our hostel about an hour after landing. We have spent the day walking around in the rain exploring Kunming which is in the southern province of Yunnan. We are getting many stares especially f
Ordering food in China with no english 2007-11-23 09:11:16 We ventured out from the Hump hostel for dinner. Yes, there was a McDonalds near but both of us wanted an adventure so we headed down the alley and stopped when we came to an interesting looking eatery. Here is a short clip from our funny night at the restaurant in Kunming. No one that worked at the place spoke a word of english and we were directed to order quickly from the all-chinese menu placed on the table. Ended up being super fun! Hope you enjoy the video!

This is a picture we took today of the Forbidden City in Beijing China. It was the most amazing feeling being in a place over 600 years old! We have just seen a movie about an Emperor that lived in the Forbidden City, so it was especially neat to be in the exact places where the Ming Emperors lived and died. Beijing was clear but cold today, maybe about 50 degrees F! Cold and biting wind didn’t help matters! The full moon came up around 4pm and it was a wonderful end to an amazing day of sightseeing. We first went to the Temple of Heaven where we explored the many temples and sacred wings. Then we took a rickshaw through a Hutong and ended up at Tiananmen Square. Tiananmen Square is south of the Forbidden city, which has 9,99 rooms and can not possibly be seen in just one day! We were bombarded by people who wanted to sell us hotel rooms, hostels rooms, taxis’ and gui
Flight from Lao to China 2007-11-23 08:22:33 Here is the video we did on the flight from Lao to China
. It was indeed a very scary turbulent flight! It couldn’t have been that scary because I slept on the way there, but I think that was mostly because we hadn’t really slept much in the 48 hours prior to leaving. We haven’t been sleeping well lately, so ‘waking’ up at 4.00am wasn’t really a problem. We were surprized at the airplane that we were about to take over the mountainous terrain. The take off was ok, the flight was bumpy but, the landing was the worst! It always is I think. The runway was wet and slippery and it was blowing wind very hard! I hope everyone enjoys our video!

We arrived just before sunset and climbed the steep stairs just in time to snap a few photos. We then walked back down and had dinner with our guide and another photographer from Australia. We ate local food and drank a few very cold beers. We slept in an original turret on the Great Wall. When we headed to bed, the Hobos were both worried that we were going to be freezing all night because the wind picked up and the temperature dropped to -10c. Our host put together two sleeping bags for us each, which ended up being more than adequate. In fact, Alie ha
