4 Step to get releif 2007-11-06 09:46:00 1) Saying things that help. For some reason when I'm alone with someone they quite regurarly start talking about their problems, and a lot of people tell me afterwards that what I said really helped, and even that I've really changed their lives. It's really weird since I feel so screwed up myself, but I guess it takes one to know one. I've considered studying to become a therapist. It's just I really hate studying. 2) Making stuff up = creative fiction. Top 10% easy, maybe even top 1%. Unfortunately my attention span is too short for anything but roleplaying, which has no money in it. 3) I can tell good from bad, even in things I don't know much anything about. 4) I listen to a LOT of music.
Importent Advice 2007-11-06 09:44:00 Capitalism rewards things that are both rare and valuable. You make yourself rare by combining two or more “pretty goods” until no one else has your mix. I didn’t spend much time with the script supervisor, but it was obvious that her verbal/writing skills were in the top tier as well as her people skills. I’m guessing she also has a high attention to detail, and perhaps a few other skills in the mix. Probably none of those skills are best in the world, but together they make a strong package. Apparently she’s been in high demand for decades. At least one of the skills in your mixture should involve communication, either written or verbal. And it could be as simple as learning how to sell more effectively than 75% of the world. That’s one. Now add to that whatever your passion is, and you have two, because that’s the thing you’ll easily put enough energy into to reach the top 25%. If you have an aptitude for a third skill, perhaps business or public speaking, develop
Career Advice 2007-11-06 09:27:00 For every person who studies something specific, such as the law or medicine, and actually ended up in that sort of career, I think there are five who let chance pick their careers. That works out more often than you’d think, but you can’t recommend it as a career strategy. Instead, I recommend a general formula for success. Allow me to explain. If you want an average successful life, it doesn’t take much planning. Just stay out of trouble, go to school, and apply for jobs you might like. But if you want something extraordinary, you have two paths: 1. Become the best at one specific thing.2. Become very good (top 25%) at two or more things. The second strategy is fairly easy. Everyone has at least a few areas in which they could be in the top 25% with some effort. In my case, I can draw better than most people, but I’m hardly an artist. And I’m not any funnier than the average standup comedian who never makes it big, but I’m funnier than most people. The magic is that few Read more:Career
The Visualization Technique 2007-11-14 11:13:00 The use of mental visualization can be extremely helpful in preparing for your interview. You can, by visualization, experience your coming interview, including a rehearsal of how you would react in specific situations. Many great athletes prepare for competition through visualization. And many of the great feats of history have been accomplished first through visualization. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to scale the heights of Mount Everest, was asked by a young reporter how it felt to be the first man to touch the peak of Everest. Hillary replied that it felt exactly the same as each of the previous times. What the puzzled reporter failed to see is that Hillary had already successfully scaled Everest many times through visualization. In preparing for the interview, go through the motions in your mind. Anticipate the questions that may be asked. Visualize yourself as confident and self-assured. Not cocky, just confident in your background and the benefits you can provide the em Read more:Visualization

Raspberry Fudge Swirl in a Plain Vanilla World 2007-11-23 00:08:00 Even though you have probably already gone through this exercise in the self-evaluation phase of your career planning, it’s important to go through it one more time: know how you measure up against your competition. And this time take very specific note of your competitive differences. Don’t go along with the mistaken impression that you can sell based only on your own personal value—remember our discussion of product-driven marketing versus customer-driven marketing. Know what your specific advantage is for each specific employer. Be ready to articulate that advantage in very precise language.Success in interviewing involves being fully prepared. But it’s more than that—you must stand out in a world of plain vanilla job candidates. What particular strengths make you uncommon? What makes you unique? What is your competitive differentiation? The Interview Psych Technique 2007-11-23 00:06:00 The night before the interview, spend some time with a friend or family member, telling them why you would be the best for the position. Use superlatives galore! The purpose is to put you in the right frame of mind for the interview, so that you truly believe you are the best possible candidate for the job. Why is this so vitally important? See the next item. Read more:Psych
Whom Would You Believe? 2007-11-23 00:01:00 Before you can possibly convince me as the interviewer that you are right for the job, you have to believe it yourself. It’s amazing how many candidates seem tentative and reluctant to express confidence in their own abilities. Remember, you are all alone once the interview starts. No one will sell you if you don’t sell yourself. How can I believe in you if you don’t believe in you? I am not here to sell you on our company until after you sell me. Once you have sold me on you, I will sell you on the position and the company, but not until then. So don’t expect the interviewer to tell you why you are right for the job. That is your job.
The Pygmalion Technique 2007-11-21 07:33:00 There is still a way for you to prepare yourself mentally for the interview. Remember Pygmalion? In Greek mythology, Pygmalion sculpted a beautiful ivory statue of a woman that was given to the king of Cyprus. Pygmalion believed so strongly that the statue was real that it was eventually given life by the goddess Venus. If others tell you that you can do something, and tell you this long enough, you will eventually come to believe it yourself and live it in your life. To see a simple example of the power of this technique in action, notice what happens to you when you smile for an extended period of time. Think of something (or someone) pleasant or amusing that makes you want to smile. Right now, as you are reading these words on this page. And hold that smile until you finish reading this technique. The end result will be that your body will react to the smile in a very positive way. You will eventually feel like smiling naturally without having to consciously think about it. And, in
