You will need copies to send to creditors, collection agencies, banks, credit bureaus and others. Request free credit reports from each of the three major nationwide credit bureaus. The reports are free because you believe they contain inaccurate information due to fraud. Go over each report with a fine tooth comb looking for accounts that you did not apply for, did not open and for inquiries that you did not authorize. Request that each credit bureau block the reporting of items related to identity theft on your report. In order to do this you will have to provide the credit bureaus with proof of identity theft which amounts to supplying the police report you filed. This action blocks the creditor from sending the account in question out for collection. Contact all of your creditors including utilities and banks to find out if your a

To Ignore or Not Ignore Your Creditors? What a Silly Question
2007-08-23 01:35:34
In Hawaii there is a nice little saying, “No rain…No rainbows.” It happens to everyone. A little rain falls and all one can see are the clouds, the gray sky, the driving raindrops. But on the other side of the storm is a rainbow, bright sunny skies and bursts of color. When the rain falls on our economic lives there appears to be no escape, no where to turn. When the phone rings we jump and check the caller ID. We don’t know what to do if it is the bill collector one more time. The worst thing that one can do is ignore the caller if the caller is one of your creditors. Ignoring the creditor does not make the problem go away. It does not change the situation. It does not cancel the debt. There are any number of reasons that you have decided not to pay any particular bill at any given time: You may have a legitimate dispute with the creditor, one that needs to be settled so that the bill can be paid. You may have come upon unexpected expenses that have temporari

2007-08-22 04:22:35
At first it seemed like a honeymoon with your credit card. You enjoy a 0% intro APR with a no annual fee credit card. You go out shopping without any concerns of paying the interest. It’s just like shopping with cash and paying it back on an installment basis. Like most of the common 0% intro APR credit cards, you will enjoy this interest-free for about six months, and if you have a good credit rating, you can even have it for 15 months. Then the problem sets in when the 0% rate expires. Little did you know that the balance from your last month’s bill will be transferred to your current rate, and you have to live with a rate of more than 15%. From 0% to 15% is big money considering the things that you paid for with your credit card monthly. You try to pay the credit card company, but all you end up paying is the interest rate, and the charges will just pile up every month. In the end, you are swamped with the payments, and you’re forced to declare bankruptcy. You don’t have

A recent survey of a random selection of people from across the US consisting of about 5000 people resulted in a very surprising discovery – almost half of those surveyed had no idea of what their credit score is or even what range it fell into. Even more surprising was the discovery that more than a third of those surveyed said that it had been more than five years since they had even seen a copy of their credit report. Such news is both surprising as well as showing that there is a distinct lack of knowledge amongst most consumers as to why knowing one’s credit score is important information. One of the most important roles a special finance manager can have is that of “Credit Counselor’. Most of the time, we talk about counseling your “no sales” or turndowns, in an effort to hold on to them and possibly sell them a vehicle later on, after they have “refreshed” their credit. A proactive approach to this concept is taking on the role of credit counselor in order to sell these customers a vehicle now, during the sales presentation. Doing so will help you control the process, keeping the customer focused on the “credit decision” and away from the “product decision” until you are ready to do so. Taking a credit counselor demeanor with these customers will also help set and keep their expectation reasonable. (more…)
