2007-09-18 15:48:37
We had a play like this in little league too, but never ran it. Very creative and shows that you always need to be ready even as coaches.

The One Play to Not Teach A Quaterback
2007-09-18 15:44:05
I was at a game this past weekend and the two teams made it into a slug fest. The final score was 6 to 7. That is not what I wanted to talk about though. The team that was behind had a chance to win the game on acouple of opportunities, but they kept runn the worse play to teach a quaterback. This passing play is called flood pass. Now the basic premise of the play is to have the quaterback roll out to either his right or left and then have him through to the receivers that have rolled with him ot the same side of the field. Now on paper the receivers are on various levels down the field and looks as if this will give the quarterback several options to get rid of the ball. Well the problem lies in the fact that receivers also bring the defense with them when they roll. Besides that the receivers usually do not run the right depth of routes. SO what ends up happening is just a bunch defenders and receivers waiting for the ball. Why…Oh Why? Know when the only passing routes that y

Planning a Rivalry Game
2007-09-15 09:45:36
Last night I went a local high school game. It just so happened that it was a rivalry game of epic proportions. These two teams have been rivals forever and to put fuel on the fire the Head Coach of team A use to be the Head Coach for team B just last year. Geographically, the teams school districts border each other with cousins sometimes playing against cousins. The question that I pose is in the is day an age with the escalting violence at schools and the younger generations lack of attention span, how does a school put on a rivalry game which will live on in local lore as much as the happenings on the field? Planning- Most rivalry games are a yearly event. meaning that they are ont he schedule, usuualy the sameweek, every season. So planning for the eventis that much easier. Meetings should be held with the Athletic Director, Head Coach, field maintenance staff, Band Director, and cheerleading/ dance team coach. Basically the heads of all the in-house elements that you utilize

The Secret to a Successful Running Game in Football
2007-09-12 12:26:07
Coming from a power running background from when I first played the sport, I felt that this was the best way to win a game. Well It is and isn’t. Early on I was put into various coaching roles that no one else wanted, one being Passing Coordinator. That experience was great seeing that I had never really bothered to learn the passing side of the offense being an offensive line coach. Many coaches view the passing game as more of a hindrance then asset. Like they say four things can happen: 1) Interception 2) Competition 3) Sack 4) Incomplete Pass Three out of four of those actions are negative. Especially at the Minor league and Semi-pro levels time to implement an effective passing game is tough. With any level of football it is tough to get the time you need to run the routes and get the timing down. Now it doesn’t matter if you run power I formation with two tights or if you run a single back field, you have how to throw the ball to keep the defense from loading up the b

Looking for an Underdog?
2007-09-07 12:45:20
As coaches we are always looking for an inspirational story or moment to motivate our teams to greatness. Well look no further then to last weekends University of Michigan and Appalachian St. football game. ASU was looked upon to be a nice “pre-season” opponent when they were penciled in a couple of years ago by the Michigan higher ups. Over the years, ASU has gotten better and were even riding a 15 game win streak into the game last Saturday. If you don’t know, ASU is a D1-AA and when comparing the d1 to D1-AA is seen as the leftovers or the ones that could not play at the highest level. Well on 9-1-07, the playing field was leveled and the chink was found in the armor of D1 football. Great job to all the coaches and players on that team. They believed and played thier hearts out. That game will live on for decades if not forever, just like the Stanford Band running on to the field episode, the hailmary from Flutie or the one from Kordell Stewart.

Off the Field Support Wins Football Games
2007-09-05 12:37:22
For some of us week 1 or even 2 of the football season is in the books. I hope all is well with your squads and hope for nothing but future success. Something I wanted to talk about was relationship between the support that your football team gets off the field and the impact that it has on the season and your program in general. I have been apart of both types of programs, ones that have the parents and/or fans behind the program and on the other side of the fence where parents/ fans hardly volunteer or support the team. When you have a fan base and/ or parents behind the team many great things can happen, the biggest being that feeling of “home field advantage”. We all know the 12th player on the football field are the fans. They can disrupt the opposing teams by noise and by creating that overall feeling of intimidation though banners and apparel, like in the endzone at the Cleveland Browns games or the Oakland Raider Games . Both sets of fans are rabid about their teams

Tendencies… How much is too much?
2007-09-04 12:12:10
So I wanted to touch on the subject of teams breaking down film and figuring out an oppenents tendencies. I am all for breaking down film and figuring out what is going to happen and even get to the point predicting what will happen in the football game, but where do you draw the line as a coach and begin to just prepare for the game. There are so many factors that dictate a win or loss such as injuries, suspensions, weather, overall health of the team, etc. that how much time spent on studying your opponent should be somewhere in the middle or to the bottom of the priority list. Breaking down film and figuring out what your are going against in the coming week(s) is very important, but i have been on staffs where that’s what they eat breath and sleep. Instead they should be focusing on the development of their team and preparing them in on the football field to understand the overall game rather the  situations. I have had players that I have coached on the minor league level

NFL Harvesting Homegrown Talent
2007-08-30 13:40:07
So I was noticing a common practice in todays NFL with drafting players from or have played their college ball in the same region as that NFL franchise. Most recently it was Brady Quinn who was drafted by the Browns which are very close to where he played college ball, Notre Dame and where he grew up, Dublin, OH.  I had this same concept when I was in college when I was doing my senior project on a minor league system for the NFL. I seems that the NFL would get more out of their fan base of individual teams if they drew as much talent from colleges within the same region. This would create an instant fan base and allow loyal fans of the colleges and of that individual player to follow the athlete to the next level with very little effort. If teams began to do this practice, the draft system would become very different then what we know of it today. College football players would have a better idea of where they would be drafted. There still would be the opportunity for other teams oth
