Family Prayer Request
2007-09-17 13:24:00
This has been a stressful week-end. One of our teenage daughters is having some health issues. We just returned from the doctor this afternoon. She had a fainting spell this week-end and are now waiting for several blood tests to come back. She also has a what the doctor believes to be a lypoma, a fatty tissue tumor. We are awaiting a referral to the surgeon for a biopsy within the next week or two. If you feel so led, please pray for our daughter and her health.

Protestant, What Are You Protesting?
2007-09-17 13:20:00
Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary: protestantPROT'ESTANT, a. Pertaining to those who, at the reformation of religion, protested against a decree of Charles V. and the diet of Spires; pertaining to the adherents of Luther, or others of the reformed churches; as the protestant religion.PROT'ESTANT, n. One of the party who adhered to Luther at the reformation in 1529, and protested, or made a solemn declaration of dissent from a decree of the emperor Charles V. and the diet of Spires, and appealed to a general council. This name was afterwards extended to the followers of Calvin, and Protestants is the denomination now given to all who belong to the reformed churches. The king of Prussia has, however, interdicted the use of this name in his dominions. In our Sunday sermon this question arose: Protestant, What Are You Protesting? All throughout my church going years the definition of protestant has always been addressed simply as "not being Catholic". When one really looks at the root o

Library of Our Dreams

It is a dream of my husband and myself to one day have a beautiful library. When we have our dream house built, it will have a library with dark wood and floor to ceiling bookshelves. Maybe even a beautiful mural on the ceiling. Until that time, far in the future, comes...we can still dream.I stumbled across this page today with some of the most beautiful libraries!Librophiliac Love Letter: A Compendium of Beautiful Libraries

Abram's Daughters
2007-09-16 18:19:00
Several months ago, my husband's grandmother gave me some books she was finished reading. They were books I had often thought looked interesting. I had just never brought myself to purchase them. There are five books in this particular series and I am currently in the midst of reading the third. Set during the time of World War II, this is a story of an Old Order Amish family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Ebersol family has several courting age daughters. During these years the Amish allow for what is called rumschpringe, the running around years. The youth often find a spouse and decide on joining the Amish church but sometimes it is a time given to sowing wild oats. Parents are not involved in this process and most is done under the cover of night. This series follows the family of Abram Ebersol and his daughters. Their lives take several different paths and secrets are uncovered. This series also gives some interesting insight into the culture of the Amis

17 Years Ago Today
2007-09-15 07:20:00
Here is a photo of my senior prom, the day my beloved husband and I were engaged to be married! We were married approximately 5 months later. Now today we are celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary. We have been through ups and downs as all married couples have and we are stronger. He is still my knight in shining armour. We have come such a long way from where we were in this photo, at times I wonder if we are even the same people. It seems like a long time ago and at the same time it only seems like yesterday! To my dearest friend, my beloved husband, my knight in shining armour......... I LOVE YOU!

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation
2007-09-15 07:08:00
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty , the King of creation!O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near;praise him in glad adoration.Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth, shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!Hast thou not seenhow thy desires ever have beengranted in what he ordaineth?Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.Ponder anewwhat the Almighty can do,if with his love he befriend thee.Praise to the Lord, who, when tempests their warfare are waging, who, when the elements madly around thee are raging, biddeth them cease, turneth their fury to peace,Whirlwinds and waters assuaging.Praise to the Lord, who, when darkness of sin is abounding, who, when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding, sheddeth his light, chaseth the horrors of night, saints with his mercy surrounding.P

Stages and Phases: Excuses For Sinful Behavior
2007-09-14 08:44:00
I have often heard it said; it is just a phase or just a stage, when a child misbehaves. I used these terms a few times when parenting my first child while I was still a teen myself and a baby Christian. Over the years I have grown in my understanding of Scripture and my responsibilities as a parent. God has taught me and is still teaching me through His Word and His own discipline upon my life.Stages such as the terrible two's, the trying threes, and being a "teenager", or phases like "I refuse to eat any vegetables", simply put; are just excuses for sinful behavior. These stages or phases do have a name but it is not terrible two, teenager, or the like, it is called sin. Children do not "grow out" of it, in fact, they grow more and more into it. Sin only breeds more sin until it has been disciplined.Parents tend to expect to little from their little ones, but they really do understand. If a child can understand that their wrong behavior is getting them what they want, they l

Children's Spiritual Growth
2007-09-13 07:55:00
It is such an amazing blessings when you are able to see your children's spiritual growth. When you are allowed to see that all of your efforts in teaching them have not been in vain. When you are able to see the fruit of your labors. Even more amazing is seeing that they have grown in an understanding beyond where you as a parent taught them to where the Scripture and the Spirit have taught them.Last night when coming home from AWANA our daughter said that she noticed her leader saying some things that were just not correct according to the scriptures. This of course, led to a big discussion. We were in agreement with her and were trying to explain to her, though incorrect as they were, the thought process this individual (and others who believe the same) tend to use. I tell you, this daughter of ours was quoting scripture after scripture(in context)that showed the inconsistency and contradictory aspects of this thought process. We decided to have a bit of fun and play devil's

1828 Dictionary
2007-09-12 06:33:00
Homeschool Weblink WednesdayNoah Webster wrote the first American dictionary. Over the years our English language has changed again and again. In many instances the definitions have become corrupt and no longer are defined as they once were. Noah Webster used the Bible as the foundation for his definitions. The American Dictionary of the English Language is in my opinion a great resource. I have yet to purchase one but there is a searchable version online which can be used free of charge. Here is an example of the difference in the definitions:1828 Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language"Marriage"The act of uniting a man and woman for life . . . Marriage was instituted by God himself . . . "Marriage is honorable in all . . ." Heb. 13.1981 Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary"Marriage". . . man and woman are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family . . . an intimate or close unionDo a few comparisons

I have not posted much on the area of politics. I really am struggling with that since we no longer have cable news, or even local for that matter. I do feel a bit behind on what is happening in the world. I am typically, what I lovingly classify as a Fox News junkie. I am still having withdrawl symptoms and we haven't had cable since May! Teaching to the Heart
2007-09-09 07:45:00
Teaching to the heart is something that my husband and I have learned along the way in our parenting adventure. When we were newly married and raising our first child. I was 19 and hubby was 22 when our first child was born. We married at 18 & 21. We really had not talked about how we would raise a child. We simply followed examples around us and did what was expected. As we have grown as parents and in our relationships with the Lord, a lot of things have changed.I truly believe that some of the difficulties we have faced, and not too many, were because we focused more on the outer behavior than on the heart. Especially with our first child. Outward obedience was the main goal. Please do not misunderstand, outward obedience is extremely important but should not be the main or ultimate goal.Have you ever seen an obedient child full of resentment and disrespect for the parent or any authority figure for that matter? It also leads to a "it is okay as long as I don't get caught

Psalm 139Search Me, O God, and Know My HeartTo the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.LORD, you have searched me and known me!You know when I sit down and when I rise up;you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying downand are acquainted with all my ways.Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;it is high; I cannot attain it.Where shall I go from your Spirit?Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morningand dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me,and your right hand shall hold me.If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me,and the light about me be night,"even the darkness is not dark to you;the night is bright as the day,for darkness is as light with you.For you formed my inward parts;you knitte

Challies is giving away some of the Reformed Commentary Series. These commentaries as you may have discerning from the title, are consistent with the Reformed creeds and confessions. They are biblical (committed to comprehensive exposition of the text), doctrinal (committed to the Westminster Standards), redemptive-historical (committed to a Christ-centered view of the Old Testament), and practical (committed to applying the text to people today). Individual volumes are endorsed by a wide variety of Reformed pastors and theologians.

Train Up A Child--True Modesty
2007-09-06 11:45:00
This subject has been on my mind lately. Modesty seems to be a newer theme these days. A good theme at that to be teaching our children. I am in whole hearted agreement on that fact. It seems to me that maybe even as adults, we need a lesson on what true modesty is as well. In having discussions with my children on this issue there is one recurring thing that comes to mind. There are many people who are teaching their children outward modesty only. Their children may not have short shorts, mini skirts that leave nothing to the imagination, or bra straps showing, in fact they may even be pretty well covered, but is this what makes one modest? It is definitely a step in the right direction and is most definitely a part of modesty but this in and of itself does not make one modest. Webster 1828:MOD'EST, a. [L. modestus, from modus, a limit.] 1. Properly, restrained by a sense of propriety; hence, not forward or bold; not presumptuous or arrogant; not boastful; as a modest you

13 Things That Scream "Go To The Grocery Store!"

Thirteen Things That Scream "Go To The Grocery Store !"Last payday, 2 weeks ago, you only spent a fourth of your regular grocery budget. You are rationing toilet paper squares.Except for the soy sauce and balsamic vinaigrette, and the little mustard packets you swiped from Subway, ALL of your condiments are gone. You sliced your last 4 cheese sticks to stick in a casserole. You used cans of evaporated milk to make breakfast. You run out of the plastic grocery bags you usually save to line the bathroom trash cans. When asked what's for dinner, you say, I don't know, I just threw stuff in there!Celery is supposed to be rubbery, right?Children open the refrigerator door and stand there longingly with the look of death by starvation on their faces. There is water or water or water to drink. The only thing in your freezer is ice and that old box of baking soda.Sugar, what is sugar? When your children ask, "uh mom, when are you going shopping again? I'M STARVING!!!!"

The Big Giveaway: A Full Ballantyne Christian Adventure Library
2007-09-25 20:46:00
My friend Kim over at Life in a Shoe is hosting a giveaway of Vision Forum's exciting new adventure series, Ballantyne books.Inside sources say these books are everything you would expect from Vision Forum. They are well written, fast paced, with a rich vocabulary and exciting storylines. The characters are strong, courageous, virtuous, principled - except for the bad guys, of course. :)And the Christian worldview is inextricably woven into the book, from cover to cover. I am a firm believer that one's worldview shines through in all that one does, and Mr. Ballantyne was a Scottish covenanter of the 1800's. You will know that when you read his books.
