T13- Similarities Shared by Toddlers and Teenagers
2007-10-11 06:29:00
We are blessed to have in our home toddlers and teenagers at the same time. As we watch our children grow my husband and I have noticed several similarities between the two.13 Things Toddlers and Teenagers Have in CommonThey can both throw great tantrums. They both think, "I can do it all by myself!"They both need to be reminded to brush their teeth and comb their hair. (usually the boys)They both are a little stinky in the morning. (again, usually the boys)You still wonder if the bedroom has a floor, it is always covered with toys and stuff. They are still your little baby! They both eat more than you think their stomach can hold. They both need to know how much mom and dad love them. They both need to know they are a gift from the Lord. When you are in a hurry they can never find their shoes. They can sleep anywhere! They both like to use the word "mine" too often. They both require too many accessories.

Wednesday Hero

This Weeks Hero Was Suggested By BethHer name is Holly Holeman. Her job is working at a flower shop. And her mission to make sure soldiers are never forgotten. Which is why she's out at Arlington National Cemetery every week putting flowers around the headstones. She usually does this alone, but on a bitter cold day in February of 2007 she was met with family members of fallen soldiers buried in Section 60 of the cemetery who helped her to place the roses. To read the rest of Holly's story, you can go here. These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. Teach a Child How to Think
2007-10-09 07:44:00
This is a new addition to our schoolroom this year. I have wanted this book for many years but considered it an "extra" and never purchased it. Well, this was the year I spent the extra money and have been kicking myself ever since for not purchasing it sooner! I love this book and so do the children. It is great when you are sitting at the table for dinner and amongst the chatter you hear one of the children yell out, "RED HERRING!".So what is a fallacy?A fallacy is an error in logic – a place where someone has made a mistake in his thinking. The Fallacy Detective contains thirty-six lessons on how to recognize bad reasoning. The book is fun to use and self-teaching. The lessons cover logical fallacies and propaganda techniques. They also explain how you can spot fallacies, and there are exercises to stretch your abilities for detecting fallacies. The book includes a game and many cartoons as examples of the fallacy being covered. The cartoons include Peanuts, Dilbert, Calvin

Biblical Patriarchy
2007-10-08 08:49:00
Biblical patriarchy is just one theme in the Bible’s grand sweep of revelation, but it is a scriptural doctrine, and faithfulness to Christ requires that it be believed, taught, and lived. This includes the biblical model of the family, the very meaning of fatherhood and motherhood, masculinity, femininity, and the parent and child relationship. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of biblical patriarchy, not because it is greater than other doctrines, but because it is being actively attacked by unbelievers and professing Christians alike. Here is a great article that spells out the Tenets of Biblical Patriarchy.

A Psalm of Confession
2007-10-06 07:44:00
This past week my middle children have been studying about the Psalm s. Next week we will focus specifically on Psalm 51. This is a Psalm of confession. David confesses here his sin with Bathsheba and asks for forgiveness. This Psalm gives us a great example of confession as well as reminding us of our loving, gracious, and forgiving Lord. Take a moment and read Psalm 51.Psalm 511 Have mercy on me, O God,according to your steadfast love;according to your abundant mercyblot out my transgressions.2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.4 Against you, you only, have I sinnedand done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your wordsand blameless in your judgment.5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.6Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;wash me,

You Thought Patting Your Head & Rubbing You Tummy Was Hard!!
2007-10-05 08:12:00
I received this from my daughter via email but I laughed so hard. I am embarrassed to say that it was a source of entertainment in our home for far too long. :o)It is from an orthopedic surgeon. This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's preprogrammed in your brain!1. While sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right Hand. Your foot will change direction.

Updated Prayer Request
2007-10-04 11:52:00
A couple of weeks ago I posted a prayer request for one of my daughters...HERE. I am very thankful that we pushed the primary care doctor for the biopsy referral. We went in to general surgery today for an assessment. Apparently, what our daughter has is not typical of the diagnosis given from the PCP. Not only that, but this growth/tumor or whatever it is, is three times larger than we realized. Instead of being about the size of a nickle the doctor could feel a mass about the size of 5 centimeters. We go back next week for an MRI because, "they do not want to start cutting without knowing what they are dealing with and how deep it is". (doctor's words). Please continue to pray for our daughter's healing and wisdom for the doctors.

Humility: T13 & Train Up a Child
2007-10-04 07:18:00
Since it went over so well with my readers last time I combined my Thursday Thirteen post with my Train Up A Child post, I decided to do it again. Enjoy!HUMIL'ITY, n. [L. humilitas.]1. In ethics, freedom from pride and arrogance; humbleness of mind; a modest estimate of one's own worth. In theology, humility consists in lowliness of mind; a deep sense of one's own unworthiness in the sight of God, self-abasement, penitence for sin, and submission to the divine will.2. Act of submission. With these humilities they satisfied the young king.In today's culture humility is often a virtue that is frowned upon. It is also a virtue that is hard to maintain. Humility is a fleeting thing. The moment you think you are humble you have ceased to be so. Ironically, according to scripture those who are humble are the ones that receive honor. There is great reward to the one who has a humble spirit. Humility is a virtue that adults should pursue as well as model for and teach to our child

The Ultimate Gift
2007-10-19 08:06:00
This is the absolute best movie I have seen in recent months! This movie produced by Fox Faith, is the story of Jason Stevens, a man who was raised on a trust fund. When his grandfather (played by James Garner) dies, Jason must pass a series of life-lessons (or gifts) in order to receive his inheritance. This sends him on a great journey, one he would never have chosen to take, and he is forced to determine what truly matters in life: money or a love for others.

Praising the Healer
2007-10-18 13:07:00
The Lord has heard our heart's cry and answered with His healing hand! Our daughter had her appointment today to go over the results of her MRI. The surgeon said it is indeed just a fatty tumor. It has some odd characteristics but that it is nothing to be concerned about. No surgery is needed! Thank you Lord for taking care of our daughter! We have a few things to keep an eye out for but other than that everything is fine.Jeremiah 17:14Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.Thank you, to all of those who have been in prayer for our daughter and our family.

Children Need Limits & Parents Who Enforce Them!
2007-10-18 07:27:00
What are we teaching our children? Sitting at the hospital this week, I watched a mother deal with a son. The situation is one I have witnessed often. It is a sad story to be true. Her son was a wild one for sure, running, jumping and punching walls. She would yell at him, he would grin and continue on. She would threaten him, he would grin and continue on. She would drag him into the hall and tell him out there to stop, he would return with a grin and continue on. She would set him in time out, he would get right up and continue on. Time out again only presented a repeat performance. Finally, she asked him......"you don't think I am serious do you?" His reply to her shock (not mine) was.."NO!" accompanied by a laugh. Why should she be surprised not only at his behavior but also by his response? As a parent we must make sure we mean what we say and say what we mean. Empty threats and unenforced discipline is of no value. Children need limits. They also need to know tha

ADHD....of the Christian Kind
2007-10-17 06:25:00
Homeschool Weblink WednesdayWhat is ADHD . . . of the Christian Kind?It is an acknowledgement that Christians -- adults and children alike -- may have ADHD and related disorders including depression, anxiety, sensory issues, Tourette's Syndrome, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and that these challenges truly do exist. This site is an acknowledgement that those who face these challenges are not unspiritual, backslidden or living in sin, although they might be depending on the condition of their relationship with the Lord just like anyone else. There is great hope in the Lord for the grace to deal effectively with these challenges, that He can bring peace, as only the Lord can to a situation, and that He can guide us to the answers we need for our children, our families, and ourselves. This site is designed to give you hope and support right now!(summary copied from ADHD of the Christian Kind)Having a child with ADHD and related issues and a child with a learning disability, I am glad

The Importance of Sound Doctrine
2007-10-16 06:50:00
More and more God has been showing me the importance of sound biblical doctrine; Christian teaching free from any mixture of error or worldly influence and interpretation. Titus 1:9He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.Within the church today there is a lack of teaching about the importance of sound doctrine. In fact, in many instances, doctrine has become a thing to try to avoid. I have heard many statements in the past few years that attest to this.Comments such as:I don't send my children to church to learn doctrine, I send them to learn the Bible. We don't need to get bogged down with boring stuff like doctrine, all we need is Jesus. Those who study and get caught up in doctrine are caught up in head knowledge rather than heart knowledge. It doesn't matter if we disagree on doctrine, we just need to get people saved.Without sound biblical doctrine we are at risk of

Children Blessing the Congregation
2007-10-15 07:53:00
At worship yesterday, the children had a small presentation (preschoolers through sixth grade). We have only been attending this church for the last few weeks but it was easy for my children since they already knew the material; we cover it at home. Now it wasn't a cute little skit or play and it wasn't sweet little songs, but we were blessed beyond measure. The children recited answers to the catechism for the church. It was a great blessing to see and hear the children blessing us with the truths of scriptural doctrine. They are learning about God, who He is, and what pleases Him; then they are sharing it with others. What more could someone want??
