A lot of going on for many moms right now!Just in case you have missed a few great blog contests, fun sites and news, here is some cool links for you to consider.Check out the Learning tower giveaway at Superdumb Supervillain. I have always wanted one these for my kids - we love baking together and this would make it so much easier and safer!Small Magazine autumn edition has been out for a while, if you haven't read it yet - what are you waiting for? I was so happy to notice that they featured play food - my kids' favorite! And even the Twinkle-Kids felt cakes we have in store! You know about the toy recalls, the poisonous dog food, and the lead scares. Is "Made in China" making you nervous, even scared? This is something I have been thinking a long time, not just while the latest toy recalls. One of the reasons I wanted to open my own store was to offer safe alternatives (like

Decorating ideas from my corner of the woods
2007-09-16 12:54:00
We literally live in the woods, and if I could walk right now, I'd get a camera and take a photo of the mountain view from my window. All I see is rocky mountains, green trees and blue sky. (and my kids running around the yard collecting sticks and bugs). I'll actually wait with my photo until I can see the beautiful colors of the fall and the whole mountain is filled with yellows and oranges. The effect the real trees have on me is so deep that I would love to share some treetastic finds with you. These natural decorating ideas will appeal to the modern treehugger in you too - perfect for city appartments as well! Shawn Lovell Metalworks tree bed. What are you wearing?
2007-09-15 13:50:00
My friend Sansku tagged me to "Vaatehaaste" meme - what I'm wearing right now. I wrote last week about what most Durango Moms like, and now I'm revealing my own Mommy Uniform... Please play along and write about Mom Trends in Your Neighbourhood!Even though I love to try everything new, there is one classic brand that I just love... Ralph Lauren. It's just excatly my style. This might tell something of me: the only item I have ever bought for myself from GAP is a fisherman's hat a decade ago. It's classic, and I still have it, but I'm not too big on buying anything that everybody else has. Except when it comes from Ralph Lauren. And I even admit this. My Ralph Lauren clothes come from the RL Factory Store. Ralph himself has his mountain ranch close to Telluride, so he wanted to offer us a treat, a cozy store nested close by the historic train station, and I can't wait that the weather cools and they start burning fire in the fireplace in the store again. The salespersons know m

It was 1956 when the mother-daughter design team Maija and Kristina Isola designed Kivet-print for Marimekko. The unsymmetric mod dots, like big chunky rocks, were the hottest print of the late 50's. Over fifty years later, and these mod dots rock more than ever! Finnish Marimekko Classics like the Kivet-print and the dot shirt Pallopaita have inspired many other designers as well. Update on my internet rehab
2007-09-13 09:27:00
Now this ”internet rehab” is getting ugly. Now I’m totally immobilized. Don’t take me wrong. I have enjoyed my break, and the living in the mountain side is a new experince we have been embracing with the every bit of us. We made a fire in the front lawn last weekend and made s'mores. We hosted our first BBQ party. Me and kids were camping out last weekend.I have been environmentally even more conscious, and have been drying our clothes on a clothesline on the backyard. We’ve never had a clothesline before, so I have been so excited about having my laundry smelling like fresh mountain air. Little too excited actually. Let me tell you, being environmentally conscious can be costly sometimes. We use cloth napkins (save the trees!), and while we were starting to eat dinner on the other day, I realized that our napkins were still drying out in the clothesline on the backyard. I decided to go and quickly get some napkins for us and ran outside... and stepped off the backporch ste

Mom Trends in My Neighbourhood - Durango, Colorado
2007-09-07 10:42:00
My post for "Mom Trends in My Neighbourhood ", read more below and read what moms in other places write too!Ok, my own style is Euro-American classically trendy, and influenced by several countries and states I've lived in. I guess you could call me a Colorado Mom at the moment, even though I don't know if I qualify for any other reason but my current home address in the Rocky Mountains. The style in the South-West Colorado is outdoorsy, combined with hints of good old hippiness. Comfortable, practical, and no-show-off. The jewelry is semi-precious stones, made by local artists, the shoes are something you can wear for hikes. Moms drive 4x4 station wagons, and drop their kids off at school wearing bicycle outfits - on route for a mountain ride. Moms in Durango demonstrate for war and Wal-mart, and happily shop for their organic milk at the several natural food stores in town, rather than in large chain stores. Nursing two-year-olds is common, and so is babywearing. Moms drink chai tea

I'm in the internet rehab.
2007-09-05 09:32:00
Really. I am. This is just a short peak from a local coffee shop. The photo is from outside - I don't want to look like a tourist and take one from inside. The Steaming Bean coffee is freshly roasted, but a tad too strong for me, and the rows of laptops on the mornings are as inviting as the coffee and the excellent croissants. I've come to notice this week, that there are many other locals too who like to avoid their offices first thing on the morning and do some work from the Bean. We moved last week, and we still don’t have internet access at home. We have tried to get one, but since our new home is in the valley of some mountains, the options are limited to one ”guy who does it over here”. He still hasn’t called me back, after leaving messages to his voice mail. The thing is that I’m OK. I thought this would be disaster, my work and my business is internet. I keep contact to my friends and family via internet. Most of my best friends I have met in the internet! I normal

I still haven't seen the Morning .htm">Good Morning Texas TV show, in which they interviewed jewelry artist DeAnna Cochran, and featured our signature Spread Sunshine necklace.I have gotten several e-mails telling me how wonderful the show was - and why wouldn't be with such an amazing person as DeAnna! Here are some photos of the show, taken of the huge screen on the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. See the close up of our necklace..?! I'm so excited, this was Skimbaco's first TV appearance! (See how confident I am that there will be a second one..? There will be, with all the wonderful support I'm getting from all of you!). I am so happy that our charity program, with such an important cause is getting media attention. I am hoping we are able to help Hope International to spread not just sunshine, but real help for children in orphanages around the world. Subscribe

I'm still here...
2007-08-29 22:19:00
I haven't been able to post as much as normally this week. It has been totally insane. The kids' schools started last week and it has been getting used to the new routines, fixing the pack-lunches on the mornings, and hurrying to pick up the girls from the school on time... Really, that crazy. We are moving this week, and while trying to keep up with my business, I've been packing and shuttling from old home to new home, and to the new warehouse and back. We are saying goodbyes to our close to downtown home on Friday, and moving to the scenic mountainside house with a lake close by (and bears and deers on the backyard). We'll be pretty much the only people in the neighbourhood, who will not have horses in the back yard (or front, like I saw today), but we got our share of warnings of the black bears who like to visit often. Not sure that I like to idea, but I do love the nature, and we have already set up a good "bear watching" seating by the upstairs' windows. Anyway, busy times,

Jewelry Artist DeAnna Cochran Spreads Sunshine
2007-08-27 01:00:00
I had a chance to talk with jewelry artist DeAnna Cochran , after she had just gotten an invitation to a TV interview on ABC for a show called Good Morning Texas. Tomorrow's morning show will highlight her jewelry line and her focus on "making a difference". DeAnna Cochran was my role model to start my own company, and she designed our signature Spread Sunshine charity necklace, benefiting Hope International, a non-profit adoption organization. Katja: When did you know you wanted to be a jewelry designer?DeAnna: I've had a love for jewelry since I was a child playing with my grandmother's collection of vintage costume pieces. I studied Jewelry Design and Metal Work in college but it wasn't until the birth and loss of my first son Jackson that I pursued a life as a Jewelry Artist . Katja: I am so sorry for you loss, tell us more about your son.DeAnna: Jackson was born in 2004. He was born 4 months premature and we lost him shortly after his 3-week birthday. We were blessed with anothe

Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Garner and others love Valentino
2007-08-25 20:30:00
Angelina Jolie was spotted at the Central Park in New York City today, where Maddox, Pax and Zahara got to drive the carousel and eat some popsicles. I love how they all were matchy-matchy with white shirts and while I'm usually scoping what clothing the children are wearing, this time the item that really caught my eye, was the amazing bag Angelina had. The photo from Celebrity Baby Blog and see more pics of Angelina wearing the same bag later today with a stunning white outfit. The bag is Valentino 's Histoire from the spring and summer collection, and the red patent leather version has been spotted on Jennifer Garner and Nicolette Sheridan this summer. I have to say that even though red is by far my favorite color, I love the ivory one. I've never been a big fan of patent leather, and the ivory bag is just stunning. The braided leather detailing are fabulous and also gives a nice nautical feel. Both available at Neiman Marcus for around 1700$. Subscribe

Stokke Sleepi Mattress recall
2007-08-25 19:31:00
One of my favorite children's modern furniture companies, Stokke, has recall ed the mattress for their Sleepi crib. The crib mattresses are not properly sized, creating a gap, posing an entrapment hazard to children. Luckily this was noticed before any injuries happened. If you purchased one of these cribs between September 2006 and March 2007, contact Stokke for replacement. Only oval shaped Sleepi cribs with foam mattresses sold under the following model numbers are the subject of this recall: 660321, 660320, 660301,660305, 660318, 652268, 652269, 652246, 652247 and 652248. The cribs were sold in a variety of colors, including white, walnut, natural, cherry and whitewash. The model number can be found on the packaging and underside of the crib.If I was in the market for cribs now, the Sleepi still might be one of the top two or three options. It is just so versatile, and works from bassinet to a junior bed. Subscribe

8 jobs I have held
2007-08-24 19:34:00
Jane at Pinks & Blues blog did this meme, and tagged "anyone", and since Stacey just did it too, me too! I'm in!So here are 8 "careers" I've ever had. My lifetime career is being a mom and wife, but here are 8 jobs I've held.1. Store owner - I figured that nobody is going to come and hire me from changing diapers for a big corporate job I always dreamed of, so I started my own corporation and made myself the president, just for kicks. Best of course is to do everyday what I love the most - help other moms to find products for their children, and work from home. 2. Worker at electronics factory assembly line was my first summer job. I made parts for satellites, and got promoted to the office floor after two weeks to deliver mail and take copies part of the day. I was so proud of my "promotion"! More electronics on other summer job when I was already at college studying production management. I was actually making high quality loudspeakers in this company. I got the biggest kicks when

Cool new back to school products!
2007-08-24 14:05:00
A few weeks ago I wrote about Havins Originals tees and Four Peas backpacks - well, guess what? Now both of those are available at Skimbaco! Havins offers now tees also with long sleeves and Four Peas offers a lot of new styles this fall! Like the motorcycle backpack, and also messanger bags and lunch bags arriving in October. My favorite is still the Funky Monkey, and me and my girls were excited to see that it was also just featured in Every Day with Rachael Ray magazine, we are huge fans of Rachael here!I love to personalize my kids' bags and lunch bags, so I decided to offer FREE PERSONALIZATION for all Four Peas bags! It's just so neat to see how proud children are when something has their own name on it. My son can't wait for cooler weather and use his long sleeved Havins Originals airplane tee, and I can't wait those beautiful fall colors, all matchy-matchy to his orange tee. Subscribe

School started
2007-08-23 09:29:00
The schools started here yesterday, and Isabella was so excited that it easily got everybody else excited too. Today it was a different note though. Gabriella started Kindergarten today. The school wanted to make the first day easier and had just the boys start yesterday and girls today. This is her first school day ever. I really thought that I had it all in control, I had gone through this once before with her sister, and had just written my tips (mainly for myself) how to survive the separation anxiety. But is was so hard to leave the school, and leave her there surrounded by people she didn't know. Even though the teacher was super nice and funny, and the class room was full of other little girls (who all looked so small to me today). I know she is going to have fun, and it is good for her to learn to be apart from me. But it's tough. I am so thankful for all those people who made orders from my store last night and this morning, I know I'm going to have a busy day. But I still

Time Traveler ~Throwback Thursday~
2007-09-26 19:46:00
One of my favorite books is “The Time Traveler ’s Wife.” It’s about this guy named Henry who involuntarily slips in and out of time, sometimes waking up several years ahead and sometimes waking up several years behind his present life. A couple of nights ago I took one of my students from Still Creek Boys’ and Girls’ Home to see “Grease.” One of the dances in the play was “The Stroll.” In the 60’s, we danced the stroll, did the gator, and rock and rolled with the best of them. The play brought back memories of cheerleading, dancing, and high school romances, -- good times. One crazy and dangerous game we often played was “running the box.” Someone would tie a long rope to a box, we would place it on the side of the road & wait for someone to come by, stop their car, or truck, to see what was in the box. Then the fun would begin. We would pull slowly on the rope, the person would figure out the joke, get in their vehicle & leave, while we laughed hilario
