KITCHEN TO IMPROVE
2008-03-11 04:46:00
Kitchen. The ultimate priority for homemakers, an afterthought for the rest who rarely pick up the pan. But the truth is, everybody wants a good-looking kitchen - even if they step into it only once in a blue moon - to complement their home decor. So I thought this would be useful tip for home owners who wish to revamp their old kitchens inexpensively.Stan

SPACE SAVING KITCHEN CONCEPT
2008-03-09 09:29:00
Turkey's Fevzi Karaman has come up with a superb kitchen concept which looks funky, yet saves much needed floor area in tiny apartments. And it comes fairly well-equipped for its size. Cooker hob? Checked. Sink? Checked. Concealed storage? Checked.More truth to the saying 'good stuff come in small packages'?Stan

CABBAGE CHAIR
2008-03-09 01:12:00
I usually like furniture that has more solid forms and contours. So it comes as a surprise to myself I actually find this Cabbage Chair by Japanese designers Nendo likable. Made of waste paper from the pleated fabric industry, the chair is essentially a roll of pleated paper peeled away carefully from the outside in, layer by layer.Didn't I tell you in my earlier post the Japanese have a way with papers?KUS

HONEYCOMB LAMP
2008-03-08 07:57:00
The Japanese are famed for their use of paper in furniture and furnishings. Think shoji screens, light shades, cushions and futons made using paper. Honeycomb Lamp from Kyouei Design's Kouichi Okamoto is made from denguri paper, a local product of Shikoku region in Japan, and comes packed flat in a slick paper box (yes, I'm a sucker for nice packaging).Taken out of the box, it easily folds out into the form of a table lamp, enveloping a small bulb in the middle to create a lantern-like shading effect. The stretched folds give it that honeycomb pattern, hence the name.At $48 from Unica Home, I think it's not a huge price to pay for a little piece of innovation.KUS

PLAY!
2008-03-07 10:00:00
We grown-ups hardly play with tile puzzles anymore - not that I expect today's kids would - but we sure know what a good toy it used to be. So somebody took the same premise, apply it to a coffee table and came up with PLAY!, which is, in my opinion, equally a joy to use too.Stan

Rajiv Saini + Associates' take on the contemporary Indian style for many of his commissions is both refreshing and inspiring. Venturing away from garish color overdose and excessive embellishment, most of his designs have a timeless quality to them and look equally at place in India as in any other cosmopolitan cities around the globe.Stan

BATH & BEYOND CHAIR
2008-03-06 11:35:00
Israel’s Reddish Studio “helps objects feel better about themselves” by using them in totally unexpected ways. The Bath & Beyond Chair was borne out of an old bathtub that was cut, bent and fitted up with steel legs. And the result is, surprisingly, comfortable.Stan

HOME REJUVENATED!
2008-03-06 09:22:00
It always an ego boost for me to have home owners telling me how much they love the new look I've created for their homes. But what makes me happier in this case is the process of turning every corner from messy and dingy to neat and sparkling. To be able to banish one more cluttered home from the surface of this earth for good.Oh, how I love my job.Living/ Dining areas - beforeLiving/ Dining areas - afterKitchen - beforeKitchen - afterPowder room - beforePowder room - afterMedia room - beforeMedia room - afterKUS

HYBRIDMATTER
2008-03-04 06:56:00
Singapore designer Yao Chin Leng's flair for fusing East and West elements is evident in his body of work. His firm HybridMatter showed the Qi and Asia coffee tables during last year's Platform, a show held annually in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair Singapore and ASEAN Furniture Show (IFFS/AFS), and wowed the crowd with its clean-cut designs.Qi's form is clearly inspired by the Chinese chess pieces of weiqi. Asia is a collection of coffee and side tables that re-interprets the Oriental traditions using contemporary materials in sophisticated new ways. But my vote still goes for Dusk, a dark-stained Oak table which evolved from the image of a setting sun. Eclipse, on the other hand, was conceptualized from the phenomenon which we call the lunar eclipse. At this year's Plat

To nurture design talents, the Singapore Furniture Industries Council organizes the annual Furniture Design Award (FDA) to provide a high profile avenue for Asian designers to express their creativity and gain recognition in the industry. The theme for FDA 2008 – 'TENSION' – encourages participants in the Students and Young Designers categories to explore the element of tension in their design concepts, challenge their creativity to the hilt yet allow them tremendous f

10 CHIC THERAPEUTIC SPACES
2008-03-02 07:42:00
All of us are bombarded daily by the pressures of work and relationships. We really hate to go back home after a hard day's work to find even more distractions from noisy TVs, kids and neighbors. In short, we just want to forget the mundane stuff and switch our minds off totally - even if it's only momentarily.Interestingly, there's an increasing demand for spaces that seek to 'purify' the soul. Whether it's a room for practicing yoga or a quiet area for reflecting upon oneself, home owners are surely - and definitely - realizing the importance of keeping the mind off the constant intervention of the outside world. When it comes to the establishment of therapeutic rooms, there is no one way to direct someone on how to customize a 'sacred' space. Designing a room for meditation is much like

RETHINKING MATERIALS
2008-03-01 23:28:00
Designers act like scientists in some ways. We like to constantly experiment with the use of materials in unexpected ways. And we like to think we have done mankind a great favor when we turn the mundane into high art in those successful cases. Ha, what wishful thinking...But seriously, even if these following examples will not change the world in a huge way, they'll at least have you walk away going "Why didn't I think of that before?".Well, that's how design works, right?Magazine racks and seating can be made out of old carpet samples.Books For Books is a a bookshelf made out of books. Yes, you'll need plenty of old ones.Water bottles can be used as screens and partitions.Even old bicycles are not entirely worthless.Stan
