SHORT TAKES 2007-10-21 07:49:00 What a weekend! Since we posted the poll results of the '10 most influential design bloggers' on this blog 2 days back, we've received another tonne of emails from enthusiastic bloggers and readers recommending or directing us to their blogs. That's a lot for our minds to take in right now, so allow us to run through the entire mailbox over the next 2 weeks before we decide what to do with them. And in the meantime, do kindly refrain from emailing us. Thanks a lot. Dezeen profiled this residential project by Romanian architects A.A. Studio not too long ago. The interior design of this three room apartment, as described by the architects, "combines elements from the pop-art age, from the aesthetics of the years ‘60-’70 and from the contemporary minimalism, all under the influence of white, used so predominant as a manifest against the impure context where the habitation takes place." From the many less-than-encouraging comments on the blog, it's very clear - need we be remi
LESSONS FOR CREATIVES 2007-10-25 02:26:00 The creative line, though enjoyable, is also a highly stressful one which requires meticulous time organization (then again, which job doesn't?). 3 QUESTIONS THAT MATTER: PART 3 2007-10-24 02:43:00 We've come to the last part of our series of interviews with some of the blogosphere's most influential design bloggers. This session's guests are Grace Bonney (GB) from Design*Sponge and Irene Hoofs (IH) from Bloesem.Home Rejuvenation: What made you decide to write a design blog back then?GB: I was pretty lost when it came to my career in 2004. I had just graduated from college, left an unstable job with a record label and was trying to figure out what to do next. I knew I loved design and fine arts but wasn't quite sure what to do with the skill set I had. Nothing I wanted to do seemed to fit into a traditional job category so over brunch one day my boyfriend suggested I start a blog to warm up to the idea of writing about design, rather than creating my own. I started by posting some of my favorite iconic pieces (Eames chairs, Van der Rohe sofas and Bouroullec designs) and just sort of talked about designers I liked and my local design scene in Brooklyn. At the time, th

3 QUESTIONS THAT MATTER: HOLLY BECKER (DECOR8) 2007-10-28 09:23:00 This is an interview we thought will never see the light of day. We are so very happy it did.Our good blogger friend Holly Becker from Decor8 has been so busy the past few weeks, and finally came back yesterday with her replies to our interview questions. Thanks for taking the time out to do this, Holly!Home Rejuvenation: What made you decide to write a design blog back then?Holly: When I started decor8, it was long before the bevy of design blogs that exist today, before advertising, before "top 10" contests such as this one, before all the hype I guess you could say! :) Back then being a blog held NO clout. Not that it does now, but at least when I tell store owners or magazines that I'm a blogger, they don't ask me "What's a blog?" or "Oh, that's nice" and walk away discrediting my work.So I have to say that what drove me to start decor8 was that I only knew of two other female bloggers and felt like, though I liked them both very much, neither were thirtysomethings like me wit
SHORT TAKES 2007-10-28 07:38:00 How far can one go to make the neighbors stand up and take notice? Probably this. It's blooming season as and when you like it! LinkAccording to The Gazette, "Ordinary just doesn't cut it anymore". Design has truly hit mass-market.I'm no book critic, but I sure know an interesting book when I read one. The book Apartment Interiors celebrates some of the world’s finest contemporary interiors - every one of them being a spectacular source of inspiration. These diverse living spaces share many similar qualities that we find most appealing in the home: the creative yet restrained use of materials, colour and texture, the clever use of space, and superb attention to detail.(Above images lifted from the book Apartment Interiors by Carles Broto)Stan

HOT! FINDS 2007-11-19 12:26:00 KNQ Associates scours the net for beautiful objects for the home!1. The beautiful Around the Roses tables from Moroso depict posies on digitally printed fabric embedded in acrylic. The table tops range in hues from white and pink to violet and blue, and the varnished steel bases come in three heights with black or white lacquer finish.2. The top cover of this fireplace/ table slides from side to side, exposing either a flue-less EcoSmart burner, or a recessed ice bucket fit for a bottle or two. We think this piece is set to be an instant ice-breaker at cocktail parties - hopefully not because someone’s skirt caught fire. Link3. Instead of stashing away your shoes into the closet, consider giving those shoes a Ferris Wheel ride on the Shoe Wheel by Rakku Designs. This funky little product gently holds in place your flats - 30 pairs to be exact - via elastic bands, and offers the flexibility to adjust the size of the pockets, the tension or change the rotation speed to suit your needs.
SHORT TAKES 2007-11-30 09:56:00 Located in central London, Olivomare is a new seafood restaurant that features an eye-catching mosaic wall of laminated plastic fish. I know we're not about to see anything fishy like this going on in your own home, but it sure looks interesting enough to share with you people here. These candle holders scare me - it's amazing what people can think of these days. LinkWe usually shake our heads in disappointment when those shelves bend under the strain from our book collection after some time. Flexi is an unique case where bending is celebrated. On an ending note, we are currently working on our new company website, and are about to roll out the new look soon. HOME REJUVENATED! 2007-12-07 04:12:00 A Bukit Timah condominium apartment to be put up for sale is given a long-overdue rejuvenation in 4 short days. We take you through the transformation.Living area - beforeDining area - beforeMaster bedroom - beforeBedroom 2 - beforeThe original 2-bedroom unit is dim and dated-looking (does it always have to look this way before a revamp?). Creating an essence of calm and spaciousness in this apartment is hence a prerequisite, as is a need for it to be low-maintenance. Mirrors were utilized in certain areas to create the illusion of larger spaces while fabrics and furniture in neutral tones were chosen to create a timeless look with an Asian flair. Accessories such as the patterned sheer curtains and pebble washed wallpaper add texture and colors to the look. The decorative light fittings are a highlight in this home. THE PERFECT GIFT IDEAS? 2007-12-18 01:01:00 Christmas is just around the corner. Having a hard time finding the perfect gift for your loved ones? We've rounded up the most ideal gifts for the occasion.1. Coat racks just seem to look better and better (remember those olden days when coat hangers sit like a tree in the corner?). This impressive Frame hanger, though a tad over-sized, will get the nods from the ladies.2. Which lady could possibly do without a mirror? Especially not when you are talking about the Narcisse mirrors from Domestic. Dress up and party away!3. Ah Mr Wanders, how thoughtful of you to have come up with the Boutique sofa for those fashion-conscious - and maintenance-phobic - ladies. You'll be much loved.4. A design masterpiece as a Christmas gift will most certainly impress (sorry about the big hole burnt in the pocket though). But at its price, the receiver's got to be a very special someone indeed.5. WEBSITE REJUVENATED! 2007-12-14 22:23:00 After 2 months of slog, I'm happy to announce that our website finally got a new look! Packed with highlights of numerous home interiors we've rejuvenated over the past 4 years, we hope this newly designed 'book' will offer the public a better insight into our works and design process.Though we're pretty pleased with the look of things on the site right now (yep, we know it won't win us a Webby yet...), that doesn't mean we won't continue to improve upon it. We especially need you folks to kindly offer any feedback on how we can do this thing better. So, do let us know, please! In the meantime, happy reading.Stan
SHORT TAKES 2007-12-13 10:47:00 With conservation the focus of attention everywhere these days, it's hardly surprising to find out that many designers are doing their bit to help. SHORT TAKES 2007-12-23 06:36:00 I've always wondered how it really feels like to live in an igloo. Call it a childhood dream, but I'm sure a lot of you folks out there share the same dream. But what's more intriguing about an igloo is the way it's constructed. Granted, we can't exactly term an igloo 'home', but I thought it's kinda fun to know more about it - even if you're not an Eskimo.I personally admire the works of contemporary Japanese designers like Torafu Architects and Takashi Sugimoto of Super Potato. Many Japanese are such creative people, no doubt about it. This foldable seating system is further proof of that. By the way, should you not find the piece of furniture interesting, there's a chance you might still be entertained by the designer's antics. Call it creative antics. The recently concluded Lightouch design competition, held in partnership with Flos, saw many bright ideas coming from designers in Singapore, China, New Zealand and the U.S etc. Do you love vintage stuff? With a twist, I me

SITSCAPE 2007-12-20 07:29:00 This somehow made me think of my Legos from years back.Hackenbroich architekten recently designed a system for a lounge landscape which is configurable to fit individual needs. Digitally cut laminated wood are connected together via aluminum spacers and metal thread rods to form the whole structure - the prototype is 6 meters long. Even the seat cushions can be connected in various ways to cover those favorite zones.I know it's not going to beat that cushy leather sofa of yours in terms of sheer comfort, but the idea that not many people own a 'sitscape' at home is, well, quite comforting.KUS
