Hoosiers in solid standing with Tyler Zeller
2007-09-14 12:19:02
Many of you who’ve read ITH since it launched in June may remember a post in early July talking about IU and their chances to land Washington (IN) big man Tyler Zeller. At the time, it was uncertain whether IU would even make Zeller’s final list, but I said not to count the Hoosiers out just yet. All of the buzz at that time was pointing Zeller in the direction of Purdue. Since that time, Zeller trimmed his list of schools to four as he eliminated Kansas and Kentucky among others. Zeller then visited IU to meet with representatives from the Kelley School of Business and his friend and AAU teammate Matt Roth committed to the Hoosiers. And now we have a report this morning, according to Jeff Rabjohns of the Indianapolis Star, that Zeller now plans to major in business rather than engineering. I’m no brain surgeon, but all of these factors seem to add up to the presumption that IU is in very good shape with Zeller. Tyler will begin taking his official visits this weekend

2009 forward Derek Elston talks IU commitment
2007-09-13 16:02:28
Tipton’s Derek Elston is first member of Kelvin Sampson’s 2009 recruiting class. Inside the Hall recently caught up with the 6′8″ forward for a quick Q & A. Inside the Hall: Why did you decide that IU was the right place for you? Derek Elston: I wanted to stay close to home and my friends and family. I just knew that playing for the Hoosiers was the place for me. ITH: What was it about the way IU recruited you that set them apart from other schools? DE: The coaching staff, definitely. They treated me like I was already there, like I was already a Hoosier. ITH: Position wise, how do yourself fitting in at the college level? DE: I’ll probably play the 3 or the 4, like a wing man. If I get any bigger I’d like to play in the post, but 3 or 4, definitely. ITH: You’ve visited Bloomington several times. What do you like most about the campus? DE: I really like the area and it’s probably the best campus I’ve ever seen. It’s really

What are realistic expectations for Eric Gordon?
2007-09-12 12:09:12
I caught a bit of flack for not including Eric Gordon on my preseason All-Big Ten team and quite frankly, I expected it. That’s what is so great about us, the IU fanbase: we’re passionate about our love for the program and the players. I wasn’t saying that Gordon won’t make the All-Big Ten team because it’s certainly a possibility that he will. I just didn’t agree with handing out preseason accolades to a player that hasn’t played a single minute of college basketball. So that got me thinking, what are realistic expectations for EJ? I’ve talked to people who think he can come in and average 18-20 points per game right off the bat. I’ve talked to others who think he could struggle early on adjusting to tougher defenses. The most optimistic of opinions I’ve heard on Gordon’s impact include comparisons to the impact Kevin Durant had at Texas last season. I bounced this question off of Dave Telep of Scout.com the other night

Bud Mackey tidbit and Bill Lynch on the Zonebusters
2007-09-11 21:25:21
- There was an interesting piece from our good friend Jody Demling’s blog regarding 2008 recruit Bud Mackey earlier today that caught my eye. Rick Bolus, best known for his “blue chip” basketball camps he’s held since 1980, has ranked Mackey as the top player in Kentucky’s 2008 class. Most national recruiting services rank Mackey below Mason County and UK recruit Darius Miller as well as University Heights and Mississippi St. recruit Scott Hopson. That’s not the case with Bolus and I’m guessing a lot of that has to do with the fact that Mackey was the best player on the best team in the state last year. I’m really not sure if Bud is the best of the three players, but it makes for an interesting debate nonetheless. - A quick note: IU football coach Bill Lynch will appear Wednesday just after 2 p.m. on a new Louisville based radio show with Demling and Courier-Journal Sports Columnist Rick Bozich called the Zonebusters. Those of you in the

Hoosiers targeting 2009 standout Dexter Strickland
2007-09-11 12:12:23
St. Patrick’s High in New Jersey, under the leadership of coach Kevin Boyle, has produced quite a bit of talent over the years. Current NBA stars Al Harrington and Samuel Dalembert both immediately come to mind. This past season the school sent Corey Fisher, a consensus top 25 player, to Villanova. However, the best talent yet to come from the school may be in the form of 2009 standout and IU target, Dexter Strickland. And even better for Hoosier fans, he’ll get a chance to check out Bloomington when he attends Midnight Madness on October 12th. Strickland has the eye of just about every high major program and currently holds offers from Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Rutgers, Villanova, Arizona, Florida and IU. So what is it about Strickland’s game that makes him so highly sought after? We went to the expert, Dave Telep of Scout.com, to get the lowdown on Strickland. “He’s one of the best guards in the class of 2009. He is extremely smooth and

Dave Telep on Derek Elston’s commitment to IU
2007-09-10 21:19:55
I just got finished talking with Dave Telep, the National Recruiting Director for Scout.com, about a variety of IU recruiting topics. I encourage you to check out Dave’s work at Scouthoops.com. Over the next few weeks I’ll have quite a bit of information and quotes from my talk with Mr. Telep, but for now, here’s what he had to say about Derek Elston’s commitment to IU: “We don’t have a tremendously long book on Derek Elston, but in the limited viewings that I saw of him I liked that he was a guy that was willing to stick his nose in there, fight for rebounds, had enough skill where he could play facing the basket and just really had the look and feel of a solid Big Ten prospect. He made our Top 75 and we’re talking about a guy who had great rebounding numbers, solid scoring numbers and you expect both to go up in his junior year. He clearly was a priority recruit for a lot of Big Ten programs. I think its a very good commitment and I’m g

Hoosiers land 2009 forward Derek Elston
2007-09-10 09:42:06
According to Dave Telep of Scout.com, IU has picked up a commitment from 2009 forward Derek Elston. The Indianapolis Star has confirmed the news as well. Elston, from Tipton (IN) picked the Hoosiers over Purdue. Telep has Elston ranked as the No. 75 player in the class of 2009. Elston’s father, Darrell, played for North Carolina and the Tar Heels had also shown interest in the junior-to-be. I had the chance to watch Elston at the Kentucky Hoop Fest back in July and was very impressed with his game. Here’s an excerpt from my take on Elston: Front and center for Elston’s performance for SYF were Purdue head coach Matt Painter and Indiana assistant Rob Senderoff. Elston showed off nice footwork, a knack for loose balls and above average quickness for a big man. Unofficially, the Tipton native scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the contest I saw. You can read my full report from that event by clicking here.

Optimism, and not about Eric Gordon
2007-09-09 19:39:03
Thanks to the Big Ten Network, I can’t watch IU football (an issue that will be resolved, as God is my witness, before basketball season arrives), but I can tell you what you already know. After week two, the Hoosiers are 2-0. The Michigan Wolverines, and the Notre Dame Fighting Touchdown Jesuses, are 0-2. There is sincere, genuine, unabashed happiness at this news, because it combines the best of both worlds: the defeat (however indirect) of our enemies, and our own success. Does it get any better? In all seriousness, though, this little batch of success might add up to something. I know, I know: I say this every year. I said it in 2005, when I covered IU, and when a trip to a bowl game meant an expenses-paid trip for me to, like, Detroit. In college, that sounded spectacular. But there is reason for optimism, because the Hoosiers aren’t barely squeaking by the teams they used to struggle with; they’re winning big and easy, the way decent D-1 teams should during the

Bruuuuce loses an assistant and a recruit
2007-09-07 11:31:47
Under the category of “I’m glad that didn’t happen to IU” comes the news that Mason County (KY) wing Darius Miller has committed to Kentucky. Miller had been heavily recruit ed by Illinois and their former assistant coach, Tracy Webster. At one point there were rumors that Illinois was leading for Miller. However, a funny thing happened this week when Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie poached Webster from the Illini and then received a verbal commitment from Miller just two days later. Our good friend Jody Demling from the Louisville Courier-Journal breaks it down: His commitment comes just two days after news broke that UK is planning to hire former Illinois coach Tracy Webster as its third assistant coach. Webster was a key factor in Miller’s interest in Illinois until recent weeks. “I think that was a factor,” Brian Miller said. “But also he really liked and felt comfortable with Gillispie and his staff. He just felt very comfortable.” So yeah, not only

Eli Holman: Is no news…good news?
2007-09-27 20:35:41
As we sit two weeks away from Hoosier Hysteria, there’s still no confirmation on whether Eli Holman will be eligible for the upcoming season. T-Hutch from the Indy Star talked about this topic in-depth just over a week ago and since that time, all has been quiet on the Holman front. Most of the comments I’ve read about Holman seem to indicate that he will qualify and I remember Holman telling Jody Demling of the Louisville C-J back in early August that he’d already been cleared to play. Since that time, we’ve been told that he hasn’t been cleared and in early September he was unable to travel with the team on their trip to the Bahamas. So the facts are what they are at this point: Eli is in school, attending classes and working out with the team. He is not, however, cleared to play by the NCAA. And Coach Sampson has refused to comment on what will happen if he doesn’t get cleared. For our purposes, which is to analyze (and do it well by the way), I

Lance Stephenson will attend Hoosier Hysteria
2007-09-26 17:17:16
The list of prospects that will be attending Hoosier Hysteria in a little over two weeks continues to grow and the biggest name yet to be announced was confirmed today by Adam Zagoria. Lance Stephenson, from Lincoln High in Brooklyn, NY will Hoosier Hysteria on an unofficial visit. Lincoln is the same school that has produced Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair. Stephenson is regarded as one of the top five juniors in the 2009 class by nearly every recruiting publication. He’s 6′5″, 195 pounds and is regarded as an athletic freak with an NBA-ready body. NBAdraft.net compares his game to Gilbert Arenas. I’ll definitely check out Stephenson in December as he’s scheduled to play in a game at Freedom Hall with his Lincoln teammates. For now, I’ll leave you with an incredible putback dunk from Stephenson via YouTube.

Hoosiers offer 2010 wing Reggie Bullock
2007-09-26 08:31:07
Both Dave Telep and Bryan Hanks have confirmed that IU has offered a scholarship to 2010 guard/forward Reggie Bullock . Bullock is out of Kinston high school in North Carolina where last season he helped lead the Kinston Vikings to an appearance in the Class 3-A state championship game. Kinston fell short of a state championship as Bullock scored 10 points in 18 minutes in a reserve role. You can view the boxscore from that game by clicking here. Kinston coach Wells Gulledge told Hanks that the Hoosiers followed Bullock closely over the summer and liked what they saw enough to extend an offer on Tuesday. Bullock is a 6′5″, 175 pounder who is also being recruited by North Carolina, North Carolina State, Texas, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Zeller talks IU visit, staying coy about recruitment
2007-09-25 06:46:07
If you’ve got any doubt about how big the recruitment of Tyler Zeller is getting, just take a look at the sports section on the Indianapolis Star’s website. Embedded on the right side of the page is a special section called “Chasing Tyler.” Zeller visit ed IU this past weekend and by my count talked to three media outlets after the visit. And unlike most recruiting stories where a kid will give some clues to where he’s leaning, Zeller is giving no indication on which school is leading the race. Take notice, courtesy of Jeff Rabjohns of the Indy Star: “I’m definitely taking everything in,” Zeller said. “I haven’t written everything down, but I’m trying to figure out, this school has this, but this other school has that. This school is better than that one in this, but this other school is better in that. One day, you’re going to wake up and it’s going to be, ‘I’m going there.’ I’m just

Ebanks, Mackey land in Rise Magazine Top 50
2007-09-24 06:44:51
Rise Magazine recently announced their list of the top 50 players in the class of 2008. And luckily for Hoosier fans, there’s some IU flavor prominently displayed. Devin Ebanks checks in as the No. 15 player in the class and Bud Mackey is the No. 41 player. Washington (IN) big man Tyler Zeller, who visited IU this past weekend, is slotted in at No. 18. Kevin Jones, who will reportedly visit IU on October 12 for Hoosier Hysteria, comes in at No. 37. Rise will release full biographies for the top 50 players in a publication called Hardwood that will be released in late October. Also of note, here are the top five players on the list: Samardo Samuels (Louisville), Greg Monroe (undecided), Tyreke Evans (undecided), Jrue Holiday (UCLA) and Brandon Jennings (Arizona). {HT: C-J Recruiting Blog}

Confidence behind Zeller’s rise to five-star status
2007-09-23 13:44:08
As someone who follows recruiting very closely, the rise of Washington (IN) big man Tyler Zeller to a five-star prospect caught me a bit off guard. Earlier this year, most recruiting services viewed Zeller as a three-star or a four-star prospect. Many would have argued for East Chicago Central’s Angel Garcia or Warren Central’s Walter Offutt as the top 2008 prospect from the state of Indiana. However, after an off-season of improvement and strong AAU play in the spring, Zeller shot up the charts and became a high priority for several schools. Scout.com put him in their top 20 and Rivals.com put him in their top 25. His play has also made him a firm favorite for the title of Mr. Basketball. So what was behind Zeller’s rise as a prospect? His confidence finally caught up to his potential. “The biggest factor was, and Tyler and I’ve had conversations about this, he simply wasn’t ready,” Scout.com National Recruiting Director Dave Telep said. &ldqu

A video interview with Derek Elston
2007-09-21 12:05:03
Thanks to Chris May of HoosierAuthority.com, we’ve been treated to a video interview with 2009 recruit Derek Elston and his father Darrell as part of the Indiana High School Sports Show. Check it out: Additionally, Inside the Hall had a Q & A with Derek shortly after he committed to the Hoosiers. You can check that out by clicking here.

There’s no place like home
2007-09-20 19:41:19
One of the story lines that I’ll be watching closely is the 17-game home court winning streak that the Hoosiers will take into the 2007-2008 campaign. My interest in this statistic was piqued by my co-worker, who is a huge Kentucky fan. In his defense, he’s the only tolerable UK fan I’ve ever encountered. I know, that’s a shocking revelation, but for those of you who are forced to deal with obnoxious fans of other programs, there’s hope for you yet. We like to talk hoops frequently and he’s convinced that UK is going to come into Assembly Hall with a new coach, a mediocre front line led by a freshman and walk away with a victory. My initial reaction was to tell him that we don’t lose home games. Then to back up my claim and out of curiosity, I looked deeper into the numbers and found that our current streak ranks 10th in the nation. Among the notable streaks ahead of IU are Memphis at 32, Ohio St. at 25, Wisconsin at 22, Notre Dame and UCLA at

Dave Telep talks Ebanks, Mackey and Roth
2007-09-19 18:04:54
As you know, Inside the Hall recently caught up with Scout.com National Recruiting Director Dave Telep to talk IU recruiting. We asked Dave for the lowdown on the 2008 recruiting class and here’s what he had to say. On Devin Ebanks: “Ebanks is special. He’s 6′7″ or 6′8″, can handle the basketball, he plays on the perimeter and he’s just a really, really big wing player. He has a chance to be a special player that can make money at this game.” On Bud Mackey: “He’s really an intriguing prospect. He hasn’t defined himself as a point guard or a shooting guard just yet. He’s a talented kid. He’s got one of those live, wiry bodies. He’s got a big ceiling to get better and he’s pretty good. As good of a player as he is, he’s probably the same level prospect. On Matt Roth: “I’ve always thought that college basketball tries to imitate and copy each other when people have success. I

More on Pritchard commitment and Tuesday links
2007-09-18 18:01:17
- I’ve noticed a few comments on this blog and on various IU message boards across the Web asking what effect, if any, Tom Pritchard’s commitment to IU will have on Tyler Zeller and Kevin Jones. First off, I don’t think Pritchard’s commitment is a sign that IU isn’t going to land Zeller or Jones. I’m not saying that they’ll land either guy because I think it’s still totally up in the air. But I think some of the comments trying to link the Pritchard commitment to the sentiment that we’re not getting Zeller or Jones are off base. Rest assured, both guys are at the top of IU’s wishlist. As far as the scholarship numbers go, the Hoosiers appear to be fine in that department. D.J. White, A.J. Ratliff, Mike White and Lance Stemler are all seniors. You’ll also have Kyle Taber’s scholarship freed up after the season. (Taber has Ben Allen’s scholarship for the upcoming season.) And one has to think there’s a go

Trio of 2009 guards to attend Hoosier Hysteria
2007-10-02 19:59:27
With the unfortunate news regarding Bud Mackey surfacing last Friday evening, the attention of the IU staff shifts to the class of 2009 to lock up another guard. Let’s face it, most of the 2008 talent has been spoken for and it’s most likely far too late to get in on the available talent still left on the board. We’ve already told you that Dexter Strickland (pictured) and Lance Stephenson will attend Hoosier Hysteria next Friday night at Assembly Hall. Various reports now indicate that Nolan Dennis, another highly touted 2009 guard, will also attend the festivities. Just to give you an idea of how well Strickland, Stephenson and Dennis are thought of, consider these rankings by Scout and Rivals: - Strickland: Scout (No. 1 PG); Rivals No. 16 - Stephenson: Scout (NO. 1 SF); Rivals No. 4 - Dennis: Scout (No. 6 SG); Rivals No. 21 Landing any one of these guys could help ease the pain of the Mackey news. Landing two of them would greatly diminish the pain. All three and yo

Report: Bud Mackey brought crack to school in his shoe; admits to delivering it
2007-10-01 19:57:14
Some more details have fluttered out about promising IU recruit turned Just Another Sad Story Bud Mackey. And, it looks as if he’s admitted to school administrators he was delivering the crack cocaine he was caught with to someone. According to an arrest report, Jonathan “Bud” Mackey, 18, entered Scott County High School with 1.6 grams of rock cocaine in his shoe and $29 in cash. The rock cocaine was broken into five small pieces, and Mackey told school administrators he was delivering it to an unidentified person, the report said. And later: Mackey, a senior, has been suspended initially for 10 days from all school activities and prohibited from entering school grounds, principal Frank Howatt said. The district will review whether Mackey will be expelled. Not much more to say here that hasn’t been said. (I’ll direct you back to E’s more in-depth look at Mackey’s situation.) And furthermore, if Mackey is admitting to school administrators he had an in

Vitale on IU, Eric Gordon and the Mackey situation
2007-10-01 14:51:09
I caught ESPN’s Dick Vitale on the radio this afternoon with the Zonebusters on 1570-AM in Louisville and here’s what the Vitale Bald Dome Index (VBDI) had to say about IU, Eric Gordon and the Bud Mackey situation: “Eric Gordon, I think could be the guy on the perimeter like Kevin Durant. I think he’s going to really have people going bananas down there at Indiana. I think Sampson’s recruiting class has been phenomenal. They just got a tough blow with the kid out of Kentucky who got in trouble for next year. It’s just sad when you hear those situations. It really breaks your heart when kids have such an opportunity. He’s certainly innocent until proven guilty, but you read about so many athletes today who just don’t make good decisions in their life and that really bothers me because I love the game so much. I think Indiana will be a major, major factor in the Big Ten.” Wow, Kevin Durant? The same guy who just won player of the year

What to do with a problem like Bud
2007-09-30 19:04:13
Like any good, crazed IU fan, the first thing that ran through this head after hearing that Bud Mackey had been arrested with crack in his backpack was “Well, there goes that.” (OK, that was the second thing; the first thing was: “Man, crack? Not even, like, ecstasy or something? Seriously? Crack?”) The immediate reaction was devoid of legal considerations; whatever happens to Mackey, just a brief dalliance with freaking crack cocaine makes him Undesirable No. 1 even in the seedy world of college basketball recruiting. To allow Mackey to come to IU, regardless of what happens legally, would stink of hypocrisy on IU’s part. At least, that was the first thought. But is that all there is to it? Is Mackey officially done with IU basketball, convicted in the court of public opinion, opportunity to don the candy stripes lost forever? I’m not so sure. Ditching Mackey entirely — essentially giving up on him and cutting him loose — is the exact op

CBS Sports has lofty expectations for Hoosiers
2007-09-30 09:52:36
While making my rounds through Borders last night, I noticed a third college hoops publication on the shelves and it was that of CBS Sports . For the most part it looked like a solid magazine, sans the presence of Gary Parrish. I took a quick flip through and here are some of the notable things from the IU standpoint: They’ve got IU ranked 11th in the country, two slots behind their Big Ten favorite Michigan State. Eric Gordon is listed as the No. 3 newcomer behind Derrick Rose of Memphis and Michael Beasley of Kansas State. D.J. White and Gordon are both listed as first team All-Big Ten. They’ve selected Drew Neitzel as the conference player of the year. Gordon is the newcomer of the year in the Big Ten. White is listed as a third team All-American. Gordon is listed as a second team All-American. Obviously, the word is out on EJ and everyone already knows, yes he is THAT good. They’ve also given D.J. a very solid billing and rightfully so. He’ll be the captain

Bud Mackey arrested on drug charges
2007-09-28 19:24:46
(9/30, 6 PM Update: The Georgetown News-Graphic has details on Mackey from his high school coach, Billy Hicks) (9/30, 9 AM Update: The Georgetown News-Graphic, Mackey’s hometown newspaper, provides details on the charges.) (9/29, Noon Update: The Herald Times in Bloomington reports that Mackey was released on $10,000 cash bond and has a hearing scheduled for October 16.) (9/29, 9 AM Update: The Lexington Herald-Leader has new details on Mackey’s arrest. The World Wide Leader has also picked up the story.) There’s a headline tonight that you never like to see and in this case, it’s the news that 2008 recruit Bud Mackey has been arrested and charged with trafficking in crack cocaine. Here’s the latest, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader: Bud Mackey, considered one of the state’s top basketball prospects in the class of 2008, was arrested at Scott County High School about 5 p.m., according to officials at the Scott County jail. He has been charged wit

Unraveling the latest Sampson debacle
2007-10-14 16:48:03
First, a preface: I like Kelvin Sampson at the helm for IU. I think he is a good, smart coach who’s been around long enough — he’s heading into his 25th year of coaching — to know the ins, the outs, the ups and the downs of basketball at the collegiate level. That being said, there were two major qualms when Rick Greenspan announced he’d be taking over the head coaching position. The first being: could this guy actually step into a “big-time” program and succeed? I mean, who the heck was this Kelvin Sampson guy, anyways? I think the answer to that is a decisive “yes” at the moment. Yeah, we have a small sample size to go on, but so far so good, right? Second, and perhaps of equal importance for some IU fans: people were worried about the sanctions, the impermissible phone calls and whether or not Kelvin Sampson would waltz in here and strip away our supposed high ethics and clean program some out there are very proud of. But hey, th

New sanctions to be imposed on IU coaching staff
2007-10-14 10:26:49
The following press release was issued by Indiana Media Relations: The Indiana University Department of Athletics today announced that a series of recruiting sanctions and corrective actions are being imposed on men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff. The new limitations on recruiting efforts, which include loss of a scholarship next year, were imposed by Athletics Director Rick Greenspan after he determined that Sampson and his staff last season had exceeded certain NCAA limitations on telephone calls to prospective student-athletes or their representatives. “We determined that the impermissible calls occurred because some staff members did not fully comply with the sanctions they were operating under,” Greenspan said. “We are addressing that problem, and we are voluntarily extending these limitations on recruiting for another season to ensure that the full effect of NCAA restrictions on recruiting is realized.” Greenspan also announced that Sampson has volunt

Hoosier Hysteria kicks off the season
2007-10-13 08:39:47
Nearly 13,000 fans packed Assembly Hall Friday night to kick off what many of us hope will be a season that leads to San Antonio. In short, here’s what we learned: DeAndre Thomas should be given a big hand. The man has dropped 58 pounds since arriving in Bloomington and his ultimate goal is 275. Amazing. Expect a lot of “Er-ic Gor-don” chants this season. Armon Bassett can shoot the rock. He knocked off Gordon to win the three-point contest. But don’t be fooled, Armon said he thinks Gordon will lead the Big Ten in scoring this season. Jordan Crawford is an athletic freak and can jump over a ball rack with ease. The Hoosier fans love NY area recruits. A prominent sign appeared in the Hall that said “IU loves NY” and had the names of Lance Stephenson, Dexter Strickland and Kevin Jones. Eli Holman is good to go and we heard it straight from the mouth of Kelvin Sampson. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts from Hoosier Hysteria . Which player i

Eli Holman cleared by NCAA
2007-10-12 18:46:13
Multiple sources are reporting that IU freshman Eli Holman, whom we’ve talked about a great deal in recent weeks, has been granted clearance by the NCAA to play for the Hoosiers this season. Not a big surprise as we expected this news after talking to a member from Holman’s school board in California earlier this week. Nonetheless, congrats are in order for Mr. Holman and Hoosier fans have to be excited about the prospect of seeing the big lefty shut down the lane in Assembly Hall.
