Update on Eric Gordon from Coach Sampson 2007-12-04 12:10:00 Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson
was on the Zonebusters with Rick Bozich and Jody Demling moments ago and had the following to say about Eric Gordon
’s injury status:
He’s doing a lot better today. That was a nasty fall. I didn’t really see it. I was blocked out when he fell, so I didn’t realize how bad it was until after the game. He didn’t come down directly on the tailbone, it was more to the side.
It was a really nasty fall. We’re not practicing today, but he couldn’t practice today if we were. Hopefully he’ll be able to go on Thursday.
Sampson added that he expects Gordon to be ready to go on Saturday against Kentucky. Read more:Update

The Morning After: Tennessee State 2007-12-04 07:34:34 There’s not a whole lot to say about this one. Tennesssee State
, not unlike Chicago State last year, comprised a bunch of skittish guards and guys who put the small in small forward. (Zing!) Undersized and underskilled, they were never really a challenge to an IU team that didn’t play particularly well, and didn’t have to. So if there’s anything to be learned from a game like this, it doesn’t outweigh what we saw at Southern Illinois on Saturday. Instead, let’s talk about Lance Stemler.
– Before getting into this, let me make myself clear: I’ve got nothing against Lance Stemler. He seems like a nice dude, he plays hard and with effort, and he is genuinely invested in the success of the team. All of these things are positive. That said, I am consistently baffled by the unfettered love he is shown by broadcasters and the occasional sportswriter. Last night, there was one particularly egregious example.
In the second half, after a couple of Read more:Morning

D.J. White sets career high in IU’s 84-72 win against Tennessee State, Gordon hurt 2007-12-03 20:24:02 D.J. White
came out with the hot hand Monday night in Bloomington, hitting the first eight shots he took on the evening — most on dunks and his patended turn-around baby jumper en route to IU’s 84-72 win inside Assembly Hall. For the night, White finished with 29 points, setting a career high. He also snatched 13 rebounds on the evening. (This, I must admit, was quite encouraging to see.)
It looked like the Hoosiers were set to roll in this one, but after some sloppy defense and equally sloppy offense against
a TennesseeState
full court press (one that IU just couldn’t figure out) in the second half, the Tigers battled back and cut the lead to as little as seven at 65-58 with about seven and a half minutes to go in the second half. IU finished with 23 turnovers on the night. A good lot of Tennessee’s offense was aided by guard Bruce Price, who knifed through the IU defense all night for easy buckets and hit a few threes to boot. He finished with an impressive 3 Read more:Gordon
Hoops Weiss on EJ, Dickie V takes a leave from ESPN 2007-12-18 18:14:51 - Dick “Hoops
” Weiss of the New York Daily News appeared on the Zonebusters today on 1570-AM in Louisville with Rick Bozich and Jody Demling and offered up the following on our boy, Eric Gordon:
“I think Eric Gordon is very special and NBA scouts think he’s special. For some people, the game comes so easy too. (Gordon) is one guy that has the NBA scouts salivating. When the draft comes I’m not sure he’ll be the No. 1 pick but I would take him.”
If there’s a better player in college basketball right now than Gordon, I’d love to see him. He’s a unique blend of speed, power and finesse that we may never see again in an Indiana uniform. The NBA mock draft sites are starting to take notice as well. NBAdraft.net recently moved him to the No. 3 slot just behind fellow freshmen Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose.
- ESPN’s Dick Vitale announced today via his Web site that he’s taking a leave of absence after surgery to have
Is the non-conference schedule too soft? Yes, it is 2007-12-17 20:44:04 When Indiana’s non-conference
schedule was released, two games stood out to me as possibilities for the Hoosiers to get a test. The first was the winner of the Xavier/Kent State game in the Chicago Invitational Challenge and the other was at Southern Illinois. Now that I’ve watched the meat of the non-conference games play out, I declare the following: This is one of the worst non-conference schedules I can remember.
The wins against Georgia Tech and Kentucky look solid if you’re judging them on the names of the respective programs. However, Georgia Tech is inexperienced and Kentucky is in the midst of a transition period. Both will struggle to earn a NCAA bid and neither win will impress the NCAA Selection Committee come March.
Take a look at the current RPI rankings of some of IU’s “scheduled victories”: Chattanooga (147), Longwood (296), UNC Wilmington (133), Tennessee State (282), Western Carolina (292). Coppin State (191) and Chicago State (217)
The weekend that was: Robert Vaden edition 2007-12-17 05:00:19 - The Hoosiers played a laugher of a game Saturday night as they whipped Western Carolina, 100-52. Coach Sampson thanked the fans (including me) for braving the elements to watch a blowout. The only important thing we learned from the game is that Eric Gordon is back and ready to go. Gordon looked to be 100 percent and showed no signs of the lower back injury that kept him out of the Kentucky game.
One other thing that impressed me was how unselfish the team was with the ball. There were signs of a structured offense and the Hoosiers had a season low 10 turnovers. And by the way, if you have any pictures of Eli Holman in his red suit, please send them our way. PostmanE is Eli’s biggest fan.
- One of the more exciting games of the weekend took place at Freedom Hall in Louisville as former Indiana coach Mike Davis and the UAB Blazers beat Kentucky, 79-76. With his team down 12 at the half, Davis had this to say to his team: "I told our guys at halftime that we’re 15 points Read more:Robert
Hoosiers crush Catamounts, 100-52 2007-12-16 08:33:37 Eric Gordon scored 26 points and D.J. White added 21 points and 11 rebounds as No. 13 Indiana beat Western Carolina 100-52 Saturday night in Assembly Hall.
The Hoosiers played without Armon Bassett (suspension) and Eli Holman (wrist). Guard A.J. Ratliff is expected to return next weekend against Coppin State.
The win moved Indiana to 9-1 on the season.

Know Thy Opponent: Western Carolina Catamounts 2007-12-14 07:00:25 The WesternCarolina
Catamounts travel to Assembly Hall Saturday night and if you’re looking for the Hoosiers to get a test, look the other way.
Western Carolina is 2-5 and has a RPI of 315. Of their five losses, two are downright awful: UNC Asheville at home and at Elon. (Note: Western Carolina is 3-5 if you count a win over non-DI Methodist.)
Sophomore forward Nick Aldridge was the leading scorer for the Catamounts in their first four games, but he’s no longer on the team. Aldridge averaged over 18 ppg a season ago.
Western Carolina coach Larry Hunter offered the following remarks regarding Aldridge in a statement released on November 28:
“Nick Aldridge has made a decision to no longer be a part of our basketball program. Nick had some issues that we felt were detrimental to the development of our team and we have for some time been trying to help him work through those issues. He has chosen not to work with us any longer. Bottom line, he quit our team. We are movin Read more:Opponent
Highlights from Sampson's weekly presser 2007-12-13 15:40:35 Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson
addressed the media earlier today and gave us an update on Eric Gordon’s injury, Armon Bassett’s suspension, A.J. Ratliff’s return and an injury to Eli Holman. Here are some highlights of Sampson’s comments. The full transcript of the press conference is available here.
On the status of Eric Gordon:
“Eric has been good in practice this week. I fully expect him to play. He had not done anything to break a sweat since Monday night (vs. Tennessee State). I don’t think he went full court Tuesday; yesterday he went full court pretty good. It is just a matter of time. There were no broken bones. It was more discomfort and a really, really deep contusion. I think the more muscular you are, the more those hurt you.”
On the overall team effort in practice this week:
“Jordan, Jamarcus, all our guys, everybody has been practicing well. It will be interesting to see how we practice today and tomorrow because we have not w Read more:Highlights
Nick Jezierny isn't a fan of the Cream and Crimson 2007-12-12 12:04:39 First, a preface on polls in college basketball. When it comes down to it, they’re meaningless. Unlike college football, where the polls have an influence on determining who will win the national championship, the polls for college hoops really don’t determine anything. Now, onward…
ITH reader Benjie sent along a tip that a voter from the Idaho Statesman was leaving Indiana off of his Associated Press ballot. I did a little digging on pollspeak.com and confirmed that the individual in question, Nick Jezierny, has not voted Indiana in his last three AP ballots.
Of the other ballots available on pollspeak for Week 6, only seven other voters had Indiana ranked lower than 15 and no one had them ranked below 19.
Here are some other oddities with Jezierny’s latest ballot:
He ranked Texas A & M No. 24. That was the lowest of any AP voter. The Aggies are No. 14 in the AP Poll and No. 12 in ESPN/USA Today Poll.
He ranked Vanderbilt No. 11. That’s the highest Read more:Cream

ITH Podcast No. 2: What A.J. Ratliff's return will do for the 'skod' 2007-12-12 09:22:00 It’s that time again … here’s another podcast. Not as horrible as the last time, but certainly not without many faults, including but not limited to: mic and volume levels, misspoke words (indicated in the the title there) and I still, you know, say you know a million times. I need a shock each time I say it next time around, maybe that will cure me.
Anyways, on the podcast we talk about Coach Sampson’s suspensions and what that means for his general control of this team as well as what A.J. Ratliff will bring to the Hoosiers with his return. (Hint: It’s just not his defense.) Also, don’t miss our Bob Knight sound bite! Give it a listen if you’d like. Read more:Podcast
Ratliff's return will provide defensive boost 2007-12-11 12:22:44 About a month ago, I penned a post wondering where A.J. Ratliff would fit in the Indiana rotation. Since that time, we’ve watched the guards on this team struggle with their perimeter defense. At times I would characterize our perimeter defense as terrible (see the first half of the Chattanooga game). At best, judging it as an entire body of work, it’s been average.
Enter A.J. Ratliff. While he’s primarily a streaky shooter on the offensive side of the ball, he’s probably the best perimeter defender that Indiana has on its roster. And he’ll return (assuming his grades come in as expected) this Saturday against Western Carolina.
We’ve already seen enough of offense from this team to know they’ll be able to put up the points to win games. The Hoosiers don’t need Ratliff for his offense. They need his senior leadership and his tenacity on defense. Two seasons ago, he held Adam Morrison to 5 of 17 shooting in IU’s second round NCAA Tour

Hoosiers overcome slow start in rout of Coppin State 2007-12-22 13:10:39 It was a tale of two halves for No. 14 Indiana Saturday afternoon in Assembly Hall.
The Hoosiers (10-1) shot just 28 percent in the first half and led 28-26, but started the second half on a 20-4 run and coasted past Coppin State
, 73-46.
“The first half was a lesson,” Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson said. “The second half I thought we were really good. There were a lot of positives in the second half and in the first half, a lot of lessons learned.”
The game was the second in less than 24 hours for the Eagles (3-10). They arrived in Bloomington at 5 a.m. following a 89-42 loss Friday night at Marquette.
D.J. White led the Hoosiers with 21 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field. White added eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
“We had to pick it up. First half, we came out slow. Coach got on us in the locker room,” White said. “I think we just came together. We didn’t have a good defensive possession until the second half. That’s on
Indy Star reveals names involved in three-way calls 2007-12-22 10:18:09 Through a public records request, the Indianapolis Star has obtained the names of the parties involved on the impermissible three-way phone calls
with Kelvin Sampson. The original report had the names omitted, but the Star requested the report again with the stipulation that only the names protected by law be omitted. Here’s a summary of the findings:
DeAndre Thomas and the mother of star recruit Devin Ebanks told investigators Kelvin Sampson participated in three-way phone calls that violated previously imposed NCAA sanctions against the IU basketball coach. The second version of the report revealed those involved, except Thomas. However, the circumstances in the report make it clear he was the player interviewed.
Four calls involved DeJuan Blair, currently at Pittsburgh; one involved Dele Coker, currently at St. John’s; one involved William Buford, a high school player who has signed with Ohio State; and one involved Yancy Gates, a high school player who has signed with C

.
There are two things you need to know about Michigan in 2007-08. The first: They have a new coach in John Beilein, a system-oriented coach known for maximizing his overmatched teams’ potential. The second: His new team has very little potential to maximize.
The Wolverines are almost entirely new this season. Not only do they have a new coach, but their starting five is 80 percent new; only Ron Coleman returns. That means no Courtney Sims, no Lester Abram, no Dion Harris, and none of Brent Petway’s occasionally brilliant highlights. That also means no Tommy Amaker, whose inability to turn last year’s senior-laden lineup into anything better than a marg Read more:Super

Come to think of it, we really should have assigned Iowa to PostmanE, seeing as the Quad Cities were his home base during the developmental years. But alas, here I am typing this for you guys. So yes: the biggest and boldest news out of Iowa before this season started was the departure of Stevie Alford and the entrance of Todd Lickliter. Lickliter brings with him quite a resume over from Butler — although, when Alford came to Iowa, he looked like a pretty darn good coach, too — including a Sweet 16 appearance last season. (IU’s loss to Butler up in Indy at the start of last year was perhaps the single most frustrating game I’ve ever seen.)

Matt Roth is "everything as advertised" 2007-12-19 11:26:24 Matt Roth turned in another stellar effort Tuesday night and inched closer to the Illinois state record for three-pointers made as Washington beat Normal Community, 81-42.
Roth scored 34 points (including eight three-pointers) and his team moved to 8-0 in the process. He now has 354 three-pointers in his career and looks to be a lock to get the 18 additional treys needed to break the record.
Normal Community coach Dave Witzig offered the following comments on Roth to the Peoria Journal Star:
“We didn’t want him to have any easy shots, but if he got his 20 to 24 points, he couldn’t beat us by himself. His 34 points is the most any individual has scored against us in my nine years here. We wanted to make sure his teammates didn’t get offensive put backs, but they did. It started out as the Matt Roth show and then spread to the entire team. Matt Roth is everything as advertised. “
