Its not your Mom's Apron
1970-01-01 00:59:59
O.k., today I found these hip little aprons from a designer in the Boston area. http://www.sweetpeahandcrafts.com/ I'm all about hip aprons and who can tell me that they honestly wouldn't use one if they had it. Cool little pocket to carry stuff around (M&M's come to mind). They have lots of designs, very affordable and such a unique holiday gift to boot!

Art Galleries
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Today I remembered that I've forgotten to share some of the artists and galleries that are truly inspirational for me. I think art whether it is fashion or paintings is all a form of self expression and these are places I go back to again and again.1) A gallery in Bethlehem, PA called Monsoon Gallery - www.monsoongalleries.com is run by a guy named Ranjeet who is super nice, very commited to bringing contemporary art to his community and his space is really beautiful.2) Hang Art in San Francisco, CA - www.hangart.com is for Bay Area emerging artists who are looking for a wonderful place to show their work. At one point Hang had a gallery in Palo Alto too and that is where I found my favorite contemporary artist, Fain Hancock. If you ever get the chance to see one of her paintings in person you really should. The layering and craftsmanship is truly amazing. She is represented by Hang and can be found under Artists on their website.3.) Lastly there is an organization called Art-o-Mat an

Oh, Goody New Jewelry
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yeah! Today I spent the day uploading new jewelry to the website which is an extension of the butterfly collection. So many wonderful pieces and so little time.A couple new styles include beautiful German Filigree butterflies. The necklace to the left uses the German butterfly with a hand woven krinkle chain in varying colors of Sapphire. The sapphires are so small and delicate and really add to the feminity of the piece and come in shades of blue, pink, yellow and green. There is also a new charm bracelet thats been added on a vintage soft golden bar chain. The charms are a combination of gemstones; pink chalcedony, natural pearl, Peruvian opal and the golden charms are a vintage lady silhouette, german filigree bead with Swarovski crystals, Fleur de lys and lastly a beautiful butterfly. And with all Charming Sam pieces each new collection incorporates a new charm at the clasp. Summer 2006 was a sea shell, Fall 2006 a pinecone and with the new Butterfly Collection the charm at the cla

Just because I can't resist
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Up until a year ago I wasn't much of a purse person. Honestly a purse was purely utilitarian and I really didn't get into the style and preferred to carry a back pack. I had this great back pack from Kenneth Cole for at least five years that I carried everywhere. Back and forth across the ocean, lay overs in many a airport and drug it around the streets of Europe. Mmm...I love Paris!!Anyway, I've decided I like purses. I like purses almost as much as shoes. I was/am a huge fan of Cole Haan but as you probably know they are owned by Nike these days and if I want to stay true to my Indie sould then I've got to find a new purveyor of shoes and handbags. With all that said I've found a couple of purses that I just love and of course they are from some great indie designers. This is a cableknit bag with a pretty bow. Comes in various knits and ribbons. The designer is Margaret Nicole and you can find her pretty bags at www.margaretnicole.comJack Blue is the name of this company. Each ba

Shameless Self Promotion
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Someone define this for me? Does that mean I am promoting myself or if I am promoting my business is that still shameless self promotion? What is the difference between me paying someone to do it or doing it myself?Off to another subject, make sure you look at the new butterflies at charmingsam.com.Lastly today...Chanel nail polish. O.k., Chanel is not indie I realize that. Sixty years ago Chanel was indie...in a very french sense. Anyway, I scored a bottle of the black nail polish from Chanel. In my attempts to "shamelessly self promote myself" while I was on a board seeing if there was anywhere to post anything semi interesting I ran across a little boutique in Santa Monica who had just posted that they'd received a shipment of bottles. I was on the phone in a hot second. Yes, I will paint my fingernails and toenails in black. And to top it all off I'm dying my hair black. I'll be fashionable for the holidays! Envious?ciao.

Back from Feria Urbania
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yesterday was Charming Sam's first Feria Urbania in San Francisco (http://www.feriaurbanasf.com/). A hip little trunk show with about 20 different types of designers at Canvas Gallery (http://www.thecanvasgallery.com/) selling their wares to a sometimes unsuspecting public. Canvas Gallery is this great space right off Golden Gate Park and 9th Avenue with a coffee bar, sweets and what looks like some killer salads. All very San Francisco and I had tons of fun selling to everyone that came in. It was also great to meet Danielle, the artist extrodinaire behind Girly Whirly (www.girlywhirly.com) . She does these great cards for EVERY occassion and she is very nice too. Looking for holiday cards then you definitely need to check her stuff out. Remember...buy INDIE!Danielle was also nice enough to turn me on too another show in San Fran that I applied to last night called Appel & Frank (www.appelandfrank.com) I'll let you know when I'm going to show there but it looks very fun!I have a

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Guess what? They are back together! Yes, after almost 16 years they have decided to record a new album and are on the road as we speak and I saw them last night in concert. They are FABULOUS!They are now with a small label in LA and are really working to get things going again. I don't think they are leading the glamorous life one would expect thus why I'm talking about them here. A group of guys and gal doing what they love regardless of the sacrifices to family, lifestyle, etc.Check out the new album, give it a listen and buy it! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FO0AO2/sr=8-2/qid=1150907426/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-9931909-6243010?%5Fencoding=UTF8

A Mom's Wardrobe
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I would never have believed how much my wardrobe would change unless I'd had my own child. That doesn't mean that I still don't own those fancy suits, dresses, blouses and things. However, I now wear t-shirts even more then ever and I have to be willing to get them covered in glitter glue, paint, clay, food, milk..cheetos. Honestly, anything is fair game when it comes to my daughters continued exploration in this world and 1/2 of all explorations somehow end up on my husband or I.So that brings me to my newest article of clothing that is a must have but I'm not willing to settle for the freebies I use to get when I was in the software industry. Yes, I've become a t-shirt (tee) addict and for those of you not paying attention there are A LOT of t-shirt designers out there. T-shirts can also be very pricey but in some cases well worth the dollars. In other cases I think some indie designers under value their work and thus...inexpensive but very fashionable! Here are some of my favor

Thinking about design.
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I think I am becoming obessesed with the concept of design . I do the same thing when it comes to my art work so it should really be no surprise to me that now I've become obsessive about jewelry design.First lets just say I am completely self taught when it comes to art and jewelry. That may not surprise some of you and may surprise others of you. Either way I can't seem to take a breath anymore without thinking about the shape of an earring, how to change that one little thing on a necklace so maybe it hangs better. Or what is a new interesting and unique shape that can be incorporated in to my designs.I look at a lot of other designers work. If you are a designer and you say you don't study others work or if you are an artist and say you don't look at others work then well...I just don't believe it. We all do, we all try to learn from those around us and hopefully share our knowledge with each other. I'm always disappointed when other artists are unwilling to share simple techn

DIY (Do It Yourself)
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Here I am a post "Trading Spaces" addict who can't get enough of "Project Runway" and on the DIY bandwagon with the rest of Amercia. I blame Trading Spaces for the current DIY everyone is on these days in the fashion and design world.Five years ago Trading Spaces was a new concept, we all watched it and we all re-covered at least one chaise or repainted a room. Now we are all bitching and stitching, glue gunning our way to dried flower bliss and in my case....covering canvases in anything I can get my hands on and wiring tiny stones around each other to make an earring.Where am I going with all this? There are a million beaders and jewelry designers in the world these days and cutting through the noise is becoming tougher and tougher. I've been spending a lot of time lately thinking about how to make Charming Sam exceptional and somehow cut through the noise. What I've come up with is that in the world of design and art it is a combination of craftsmanship, luck and uniqueness. Unf

Another beautiful artist...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I like a lot of different kinds of art but I find contemporary mixed media usually is a category I can really get in too. I love the old masters and am fans of many types of art work.I found this interesting piece today on Etsy and wanted to share with you."Original Art Object by S. Scott. Mixed Media Collage on Paper6 7/8" x 5". Signed on reverse. This is a collage incorporating carefully scavenged bits of paper and original doodles. The paper peacock was a recent find at an estate sale. In his former life he was meant to grace a cocktail glass. Other peacocks may appear in future pieces as I have a few more where he came from." You can see this beautiful piece in its full glory at http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=484217I highly recommend checking out this artists work, very beautiful and most interesting.http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=88030

Wickedly Chic - Indie Style Zine
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I'm so excited. Sometimes the things that are right in front of your face are the things you totally miss. I've been working with Liz over at WickedlyChic.com for several months now and L-O-V-E her and the site. First let me say that Liz is fab to work with BUT she also has one of the most loyal reader bases of any zine I've come across on the web for indie products. Which means you have to check her out at www.wickedlychic.com .I could go on and on about how wonderful I think the site is but I'd rather you just hop over and visit Liz.

Sam's November Picks
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Here we are the end of November , 2006. How did that happen? Sam will officially be 3 in April but is already a pro at shopping and I swear I had very little to do with it. It must be genetic somehow because she's been a shoe conniseur since we took her to buy her first shoes. Ever since "she" picks out her own shoes. Last time she got a pair of purple hiking boots and a pair of VERY traditional cowboy boots (just like Jesse & Woody!).Anyway, she sat down with me today and picked out some cool finds for our end of November list. She's got great taste what can I say?5.) A very cute shirt from a indie company called Mary Michele http://www.mary-michele.com/ "This cute top buttons down the front and has a rounded neckline. Sleeves are gathered at the cap, and slightly at the wrist and finished off with a bias trim."4.) Dog toy. Dogs are very big in our house so anything that relates to a dog is very cool. Sam found this very cute doggy toy from a company called Paperbird www.paperbird.ne

I just put some brand new earrings up on Etsy. They are very pretty with Iolite and Swarovski crystals. You can see the full listing here; http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=5011280I've been trying to work on some one of a kind pieces for the holidays so people have more options. Also, many of the pieces in my Etsy store are priced lower because they are not part of my regular collection at www.charmingsam.comI've added a couple charm necklaces this week with just a simple chain and pretty charm. When I was in NYC a few months ago I bought a bunch of single charms from my manufacturer so I could do one of a kind pieces. There is a dragonfly, a cute little kitty will be up in the next couple of days and there is a very pretty heart on a double chain of gold and charcoal. My Etsy store has a new look because Etsy just finished upgrading their site so all kinds of new ways to shop and view items from all the artists. My Etsy store is www.amysteinberg.etsy.com

Mass Production - I just can't take it anymore!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In preparing for the upcoming holidays I've been forced out of my studio and into the real world. Generally, I try to keep out of the real world - it just makes my life easier to be in the studio. I'll go into all that another time.I did however get to meet Mimie of Mi-Spa yesterday as I helped her out in SanFran with the Association of Craftswomen's holiday craft show. Great show and I enjoyed meeting Mimie and she has some killer products. Remember my lotion thing? Well, here we go again. This time though its Shea Butter (mmmmmm!) The Mi-Spa "Body Butters" are so amazing that they melt into the palm of your hand when you first put them on. I'm not kidding, they are amazing and the scents are killer.DO NOT ever buy from the grocery store, the bath store, the department store for this stuff. First all of Mimie's products are 100% natural and second you are contributing to the work of an indie business...AND let me pull my AMERICAN card here. It is American made, in America. You ar

Paper, Fabric it is all cool
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Tomorrow I am going to talk about some new designs I am working on and I "may" even review a couple of Ready To Wear shows for spring 07. We'll see.In the meantime though I wanted to share some graphically interesting things.First, Amy Butler Designs. She designs awesome fabric. Yes, if you've never really thought about it there are designers/artists out there who spend all their time designing fabric. Then they sell their designs like Amy Butler or in some cases they license their designs to manufacturers. If you are interested then Google "surtex", it is a show in NYC for graphic designers of all types including fabric designers. As for Amy Butler her fabrics make me want to learn to sew so I can make myself cool things. However, while I've taught myself to do lots of things over the last few years I just don't see sewing being in my future. So, for you craftier girls and boys out there if you make something from any Amy Butler fabric let me know. Now for paper. I love paper, almos

Work in progress
1970-01-01 00:59:59
While I have always talked about my jewelry art here, today I am going to talk about my other art. My painting. I've had some ideas in my head for months now and just finally couldn't stand it anymore so started to work on them. I've learned one thing from making jewelry...you have to be a perfectionist. Something I'm afraid I wasn't very good at in my painting .. that was until now. I told myself six months ago I wasn't going to do any jewelry that I wouldn't wear or buy and I made a decision at the same time that I am not going to rush my art. In the past I've had to meet deadlines for shows or galleries for my artwork and I really don't want to put myself in that position again. I think my art suffers for it and I can be the perfectionist I really want to be with my painting. If you've never checked out my paintings before you can see me at www.amysteinberg.com. I haven't updated it in awhile but I will here with the new stuff as soon as I am done.Today I thought I'd sh

I love hand lotion, body butter, etc., etc.
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I get excited about lotion . That hasn't always been the case but over the last ten years I've become somewhat of a lotion snob. I can tell the difference between petroleum based, essential oil and water based lotions. Maybe this isn't a special gift and lots of women feel this way about lotion but I am also very particular about the smell of lotion and have in the passed always loved a really good Lavender lotion. I was using a name brand lavender lotion until my daughter was born and then well...I got tired and the baby lotion was right there. So, for the last two years its pretty much been baby lotion for me. At least until last week. Then I had a lotion "experience".I found a company based in Columbia, South Carolina and met the owner via email. After reading her website I decided to order a sampler box and guess what? I'm never going back to mass produced lotion or body products. Follows is an excerpt from her website, I think you will find it very interesting.Founded in late 2

Sam's Picks for Thanksgiving
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Since this is going to be a short work week for some of you Sam and I got together and thought we'd come up with some fun picks just for the Thanksgiving holiday.3.) Is it an owl? What is it? Definitely a bird ... and his name happens to be Romero. Check out LuckyKitty designs. 2.) Every girl needs a tank with a Sailor on it. You get that and more at Ship to Shore where the dresses are one of a kind but you can also customize a tank just for you. With a very retro Sailorman for girls who like a man in uniform or for those of you more inclined to go for the sweet little birds they have them too.http://www.shiptoshoreshop.com/Tanks/tanks.html1) From artist Christine Mason Miller (aka Swirly Girl) is this beautiful little piece. Sam likes the hopscotch and butterfly and I like the overall composition. If you aren't familar with this artists work please take about 20 minutes to go through her different sites. She is diverse as just about any artist I've ever seen and I love all types

Indie Sweaters
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Tonight as I am cruising the internet looking for interesting things, updating my Etsy store, uploading new products to charmingsam.com and various other things I came across an indie designer in Germany. OH MAN! What beautiful sweaters, coats.... and everything else. It just reminds me of how badly I need to redesign my website. I made a decision two months ago not try and redesign right before the holidays. Maybe I should have anyways... (?) Either way, this website is amazing and how I visualize my jewelry to be worn.First you have to visit the website just to watch the opening film. Yes, there is a film and it is worth the :60 seconds of your life you will spend watching it. The music is rapturous (word?), the imagery with the textile background, the perfect model and then the clothes. If you don't want to buy the clothes just because they are beautiful and amazing - then after you watch the film you'll want to buy them for the way they make you feel. (Now, that is good advertis

Louis Vuitton aka Marc Jacobs
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yes, I realize Louis Vuitton(LV) and/or Marc Jacobs (MJ) are not indie designers and instead float in the stratosphere of "high fashion." However, I think its important to talk about a few of the Spring '07 ready to wear shows. Not couture, I said "Ready to Wear'. That means us "poorer" folk can hope to buy the pieces shown on the runway, unlike the couture lines which are seriously made for the love of the art form, the "uber" rich and as promotional pieces. I'll get into couture another day.Back to LV & MJ. Marc Jacobs has really out done himself with the Spring 07 LV line. Not only is it feminie, pretty and wearable it is simply a beautiful show with beautiful ACCESSORIES. Here we are, accessories...someone actually included more then shoes and purses in their spring show. (For those of you who haven't been paying attention jewerly on the runway has been just about non-existent for almost a year, maybe a bit more.) MJ not only shows some very fun jewelry (necklaces & bracele

Fashionable Fabric

Feeling a little crafty today? Want to whip up your own wristlet, scarf or maybe even for you more daring girls a cute little skirt? Well, I've found another site with fabulous fabric and all kinds of other little finds. First checkout purlsoho.com. They have just about everything for knitting, sewing, patterns, notings, crafting and whatever else you might want to do. Great site, fun fabrics. Extra cute for Spring '07 is the Liberty of London Tana Lawn line. So, why am I on a fabric thing lately? I'm working on some fabric covered beads for another release of spring '07. Here is a little sneak peek! Of course I don't know for sure if this design or any of the other fabric one's will make it into the line, these are just prototypes. Once I get several designs and put the whole collection together to make sure if flows will I then make the final decision of what is in or out.Sorry so short today but I'm off to work on some marketing campaigns to drum up more business for the holi

Gotta Have It...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Today is a rushed day but I wanted to share some of my favorite Charming Sam pieces. These are things I wear every day or nearly every day.I call these my Door Knocker earrings. They are very dainty but somehow they just reminded me of an old ornate door knocker. The stones at the bottom are wire wrapped around each other making for a very pretty contrast in colors with the dark green tourmaline, lavender chalcedony and the Carribean Blue Swarovski crystals.I actually wear several other earrings often including these lovely turquoise, and also these emerald earrings. I like the simplicty both offer so I can wear them anywhere. One of my favorite everday necklaces is called Cherished & Worn. I wear it with t-shirts, blouses, sweaters...just about anything. It's made from beautiful blue peruvian opals that have been hand wired together with a very delicate gold filled wire. The necklace is very light weight but the colors are so pretty. It's so hard to choose just a few things for me

Company Branding
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A significant portion of being in business is spending time on things such as branding, marketing strategy, ad campaigns and about a thousand other things similarly related. I've been thinking a great deal about how Charming Sam is perceived by our customer base and how to appeal to new customers. Much of that is figuring out who your core demographic is and then inserting your company into places where that demographic frequents. I can say with confidence that Charming Sam has sold items to many types of customers from all walks of life, economic status, age and personal style. However, I think after spending hours and hours analyzing where people are clicking through to my site I can say with confidence that I am getting closer to my core customer. And she is me. Or should I say, she is I? Either way you look at it the places I enjoy on the Internet, the magazines I read, books I buy and things I do are extrodinarily similar to what is developing as my core customer. With 2007 I

Pin Cushions
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Yes, that's right "pin cushions"! These aren't the old tomotoe cushions your mom has in her sewing basket but instead a lovingly highly crafted little pillow of luxury for your pins and needles. Why am I practically oozing with love for a simple pin cushion? Because the designer of these lovelies I bought at Etsy makes the most amazing pin cushions. At first I thought they were a little pricey for a tiny pillow but I'll eat my shoe now! Each cushion is about 5" in diamer and probably 5+" high. Hand sewn with PERFECT stitching and absolutely beautiful! They would sell in a gift shop for twice what you are paying in her Etsy store. Seriously! Her store is http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=3988 and the name is "loosestring". I personally own a birdy cushion but she has some lovely owls, leaves, ladybugs and if you look in her sold items you'll see some wonderful flowers that are so detailed you won't want to actually stick a pin in them. Quick go buy one, you won't regret it! Oh
