Lessons, tips and observations from a busy dad... This is not a diary blog, nor is it an expert blog. Far from it. I consider it a random “dad” thoughts and best practices repository. Granted, it’s more “practice” than “best,” but my hope is that fello

Mom, I'm Not Gonna Tell You What It Is...
2008-05-10 10:28:10
"... but it's made out of Legos, has petals and a stem. That's all I'm gonna tell you."While Fury hasn't yet mastered the art of the Mother's Day gift hint, he does know his way around Legos. Better than I know my way around how to get a proper Mother’s Day gift, that’s for sure. Lucky for me, Joeprah was there to save the day. He advised me--Ok, so I straight up copied his gift (with his permission and blessing of course). I know this post on Mother’s Day ideas is last minute, but I know kids and I know guys. If I posted this any earlier, it would have been forgotten by now. By timing it this way, someone may actually use some of these ideas. Desperation spawns action. So go on, click. I’m even giving away stuff.

What Are YOU Doing on Tuesday at 1pm EST?
2008-05-12 02:30:21
Well, I'll tell you what you WON'T be doing. You won't be stuttering and fumbling over words and discovering firsthand that being witty is ten times harder when you don't have the luxury of a backspace key and submit button. But you COULD be listening to me do that. LIVE on Soapbox Radio. Many of you are already friends and fans of Soapbox Mom. And you probably know that she's been doing this inte

W8 Loss Wednesday #6 - A Ride-Along and a Movie (plus bonus!)
2008-05-14 09:26:21
This was a light week, which meant I got heavier. I have to first read the Buff Dad book before I can apply it, right? So that's all I did up until Sunday. I started the Buff Dad program in earnest on Monday. That means Fury saves the day again by producing his own movie for your enjoyment: Playmobil: The Ultimate Battle. Don't forget to check out my W8 Loss Wednesday buddies: PG @ AnnoyinglyBo

I've Officially Lost It...
2008-05-16 02:13:41
Gone off the deep end. Bought stock in Yahoo. Converted my video collection to HD DVD. Signed Bruce Willis to a 3-album deal. Invested in a Segway dealership. Whatever you want to call it. I am doling out advice. Yes, the dad who thinks that this... this... this... this...  and this... are perfectly normal activities for a kindergartner. The only thing that makes this

I Can
2008-05-17 18:38:25
I can stay up all night consoling a sick child.I can make him feel confident and secure with the person he is.I can teach him to tie his shoes. I can get even get him to eat five servings of vegetables a day. But I CAN'T. WRAP. FOR. $H1T. Butcher paper and a grease pen would have done this Wii game more justice.

Do Parent Bloggers Exploit Their Children for Personal Gain? Yoouuu Betcha!!
2008-05-19 00:23:00
d Wife suspected it when we watched Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day and I did not complain.d Wife confirmed it the day she suggested we watch Enchanted on pay-per-view and I said "Sure! ok!" and got off the computer right away without a fuss."You totally crush on Amy Adams, don't you!""What? No, no, she's pretty, I mean, she does look like a Disney princess and all... but n

BusyDad Radio Interview - Take Two, 1pm EST TODAY
2008-05-20 09:56:27
I would have included a graphic, but I have no idea what those things that directors use to signal "take one/two/three" are called, do you? Those scene thingamajigs are something you've seen and known about ALL your life, but never bothered to name. Isn't that odd?Anyway, if you tuned into my last radio interview, you will remember all the exciting things I didn't say. Well, I said them,

...it's scary how much he just gets it.[Behind a painfully slow driver on a one lane street]Me: Duuuude!! Why go gotta be driving SO SLOW!!   Fury:  Dad, why don't you throw something at him. There's no police around.... it's scary how much he just doesn't get it.  [Getting ice cubes to munch on after playing with the dogs]Me: Your hands are dirty. Make sure they're clean

If Jeopardy Were Written by Parents
2008-05-26 00:56:15
I used to be really good at playing along with Jeopardy . Not so much anymore. I think it’s because my brain has slowly become parentalized over the years. I’m convinced that the writers over at Jeopardy are young single folks, because if they were at all like me, the game would play out much differently. It would go a little something like this here game, already in progress...

W8 Loss Wednesday #7 - The Goofus and Gallant Edition
2008-05-29 02:50:26
Sometimes it's more effective to show you how NOT to do something. At least that's what I tell myself when I fall off the wagon. But cut me some slack. I was at a conference all last week, and it was Memorial Day Weekend too. But I've got a good one for you this week. There's a personal thank you to one genuinely awesome friend, blogger and radio host extraordinaire, Soapbox Mom from Fury, and I

So kids, did you hear about the super excellent prom carnival going on over at MommyTime’s place? Yes, our proms are coming back to haunt us. Click over today to read prom stories from all your favorite bloggers. As much as I love MommyTime, I wasn’t going to participate. My prom story isn’t funny, nor is it inspirational, nor did I get laid. Really not the stuff proms are made o

Distinguishing marks, that is. I'm covered in 'em. And honestly, I had no idea so many of you were too. But thanks to Sunshine from And the Pursuit of Happiness, we're doing a little showing off today. Sunshine is hosting a tattoo party over at her place and invited all of us inked bloggers to submit our tattoos to let all her readers try to match them with their owner. We kept them guessing a few

W8 Loss Wednesday #8 - No Pain, No Gain
2008-06-06 03:22:29
I know, it's Friday...This week, Fury helps me illustrate the concept of "No Pain, No Gain." This is also the last W8Loss Wednesday that I will be doing for a few weeks, because I'm off to China on business until the last week of June. I'd love to do an on-location edition, but the government bans all video hosting sites (it's quite sad to know that 1 billion people are deprived of the d

Well folks, I'm about to get on a plane for China. For two weeks! Before I go, I wanted to tell you a bit about my trip, talk about Sesame Street and give away some toys. Did I mention my blog is banned in China? Did I mention how cool I think that is? Me? Subversive? Hot diggity!

A Postcard From China
2008-06-14 15:30:23
Dear Friends, Wish you were here. Fifty cent beer. ‘nuff said. Some quick tidbits from my 2-week China business trip so far…  Crosswalks exist for decorative purposes only.  Busses are harder to dodge than they look. National pastimes: ping-pong and hocking loogies. If you have a shaved head, people stare at you. In China, only inmates have shaved heads. Inmates

My dear readers, may I present to you my pièce de résistance! Two weeks in the making, 3 days in the production room, and I even learned how to use real editing software that I had to pay for (Magix Movie Edit Pro 12). All in an effort to properly bring you my China experience. This video captures all (well, almost all) my adventures in China, from everyday scenes in Harbin, to dining, working

You Want the Food? You Can't Handle the Food!
2008-06-27 12:01:03
Hey you! Put. Down. The. General Gao's Chicken. Lemme lay some real Chinese cuisine on you. My China trip was an eye-opening experience on all levels. Especially the food part. I really thought I knew Chinese food. Sadly, even the authentic restaurants here give you but a watered-down version of what's available in the motherland. You know how after a while all Chinese food tastes the same? Should

The Little Things
2008-06-24 09:21:33
It’s great to be sober home! I hope you all had a great two weeks while I was gone. I tried to update my sites more and visit your blogs, but it was a losing battle with my crazy schedule which consisted daily of work and conference activities during the day, official banquets with government folks at night (where much drinking ensued), followed by unofficial but essential business-building

I Must Really Like You Guys

...because I was planning on taking this recipe to the grave. Or put up a website and start a business around it. Turns out I'm over the 50 lb. weight limit for netherworld luggage and I'm simply too busy to even register a domain name. "Blog about it" was choice #3 (come to think of it, that's choice #3 for pretty much everything that goes on in my life). So, my friends, I present to you the New

Better Than Legos??
2008-07-07 12:25:56
“Dad, I wanna read the book instead of playtime tonight.” I wish I recorded that. I will never hear that again. We play with Legos during his pre-bedtime playtime. Nothing trumps Legos in Fury’s mind. As far as book reviews go, that says it all really. There’s nothing I can add to lend more credibility to this book, but I’ll try. For those of you who visit this b

Always Late
2008-07-25 14:49:41
By now, you’ve already seen and heard all the highlights, lowlights, gossip and blackmail pictures floating around the internet regarding the hugfest that was Blogher 08. And in true BusyDad fashion, I’m contributing way after the fact by simply saying “yeah, what they said.” Plus this: This is how I originally was planning on going to Blogher 08: Courtesy of Maria And I totally partied it

Still Reeling
2008-07-19 15:25:00
I still can't believe I made it to the Blogher conference (ok, so I just went to the party...). Did I really get to meet these "blog friends" of mine in person? People whom I've viewed as both celebrities (after all, I do stalk them on a regular basis) and as friends? If my camera serves me correctly, I did. But my brain isn't as quick on the detox these days (you know, I'm literally getting older

Damn These Newfangled Phones
2008-07-17 11:53:22
I'm a dial-and-talk kinda guy. I probably have all sorts of cool functions in this phone that I'm paying for and not using. And I swear I saw a "popcorn" button the other day. But will somebody please show me how to retrieve this? My neck's feeling a little stiff today...  [Editor's note: you all crack me up. I'm not THAT inept. Read the screen on my phone carefully, making sure to
