Orkut….A New Youth Icon 2007-08-25 05:05:12
Several months ago MTV India called to tell us that nominees for the 2007 Pepsi and MTV Youth Icon award included Abhishek Bachchan, Rang De Basanti, Multimedia Cell Phones and, of course, You. After thousands of votes, we recently learned that we won — and we just couldn’t wait to tell you! Aside from this accolade being a great line to drop at cocktail party, being the Youth Icon confirms that orkut is important to India’s youth — and that makes us feel all warm inside We were overwhelmed to see such wonderful support from all of you who have always cheered us on. And with such close competition from fabulous co-nominees, we are pleased and humbled to be chosen as the Youth Icon of 2007.

AOL re-launches Truveo video search 2007-08-19 04:38:49 From TechSpot:AOL wants to enter the realm of user-generated video
, stepping into a world currently dominated by YouTube. A little over a year and a half ago, AOL scooped up a small video search company called Truveo. For a long while, nothing much has come of it, and AOL’s exact plans weren’t known.
Now, they have re-launched Truveo, turning it into an experience similar to YouTube. What’s the catch? AOL claims they are fully incorporating both amateur and professional video into the site, giving it an advantage over other video sites in terms of the type of content available:
“While today’s popular video sharing sites offer a wide variety of user-generated video, they rarely give users the opportunity to find professional, mainstream video. The new Truveo.com solves this problem, so whether it’s a dog riding a skateboard or the latest episode of The Daily Show, Truveo.com is the one-stop site for finding videos from across the Web.”

Google Takes on Viacom 2007-07-15 06:46:49 From Tech2: Google
Inc. on Friday took a swipe at media conglomerate Viacom
Inc. which is suing for $1 billion over “massive copyright infringement” by its video sharing Web site YouTube.
Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, speaking with reporters at a hotel bar at the 25th annual Allen & Co. moguls meeting, said litigation was the foundation of the company that owns the MTV Networks, Paramount movies studio and video game developer Harmonix.
“Viacom is a company built from lawsuits, look at their history,” Schmidt said on early Friday.
“Look who they hired as CEO, Philippe Dauman, who was the general counsel for Viacom for 20 years,” he added.
Viacom has demanded that YouTube takes down thousands of segments from its popular programmes including The Daily Show with John Stewart, The Colbert Report and South Park.
The two sides have failed to reach a settlement ahead of the case, which begins in earnest this month.
Schmidt alluded to Viacom&rsqu

ICANN approves .tel as TLD 2007-10-03 07:38:02 From arstechnica: After years of controversy, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN
) has officially reversed its approval of a proposal that would have established a .xxx top-level domain for use by the pornography industry. Initially proposed by ICM Registry in 2000 and resubmitted in 2004, the .xxx domain faced strong opposition from politicians and conservative groups.
After the second .xxx proposal was approved in 2005, the Family Research Council (FRC) mobilized its forces in an all-out crusade. Claiming that the creation of a .xxx TLD would allow pornographers to “expand their evil empires on the Internet,” the FRC urged its supporters to express opposition to the proposal. The Department of Commerce alone received nearly 6,000 letters expressing concern on the subject. The Department of Commerce eventually requested that ICANN spend more time considering the implications of the proposal before reaching a conclusion. A few senators apparently

Yahoo and Adobe to Put up Online Ads in PDFs 2007-11-29 22:53:22 From PC World: Yahoo
and Adobe
will partner to allow publishers to run dynamically generated ads on PDF files posted on the Web or distributed via e-mail, opening up a new frontier in online advertising.
Until now, publishers have been able to embed only static ads on PDF files, but Yahoo and Adobe are developing a system to make those documents display contextually relevant ads delivered on the fly from Yahoo’s inventory at any given time.
The companies tomorrow will announce the initiative, called Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo, and launch a limited beta program that they hope to open up more broadly later.
The inclusion of pay-per-click text ads on PDF (Portable Document Format) files will give publishers another revenue-generating option for the content they have in this popular Adobe document format, said Kurt Garbe, entrepreneur in residence for advertising at Adobe.
As the practice of charging for content continues to dwindle industry-wide, publishers need to monetize
