Short and Sweet
2007-10-09 09:14:24
I hope you guys will excuse my lack of posting. With Mom being here and the visit going so well, I really am enjoying spending time with her and watching Mom and Cara interact. One thing that Mom just suggested that has me excited is the prospect of Tucker and me buying my grandparent’s house. My grandma died two years ago and my grandpa is 80 something. The house is a three bedroom two bath ranch style with a huge backyard. My main concern though is that Mom’s brothers and sisters (there’s six of them) will have an issue with us updating the house. Also, Grandpa would live with us until he dies. I know some people might completely balk at the idea of their grandpa living with them and their new family. But, the way I see it is that would give Cara the opportunity to bond with Grandpa the way that I did. Lord knows he’s not going to live forever. Anyway, we’re going to eat at Panera’s for lunch and do some running around, so I must go shower my

Free Basil and Thyme
2007-10-08 10:50:29
I joined VocalPoint a couple of weeks ago in an attempt to win a Roomba to raffle off to some lucky reader. While I like the fact that I can take surveys to let companies know what I think about their products, I really like free stuff. I just went and checked the mail and I found a coupon for a free box of Kashi TLC Party Crackers…and $5 worth of $1 off coupons! Also, there was this neat looking paper note from Kashi talking about their new crackers. The paper has a really cool texture to it and looks like the paper that you spend $5 a sheet on at the stationary store. I was pleasantly surprised when I flipped it over and read this: Tear up this card Plant it under a very thin layer of soil in a sunny area Water it thoroughly and daily Soon you’ll be growing basil and thyme! Is it bad that I’m more excited about getting free herbs than about getting coupons?

Mom’s Here
2007-10-07 08:53:47
With Mom’s impending arrival creeping closer, I found myself getting more and more nervous about the visit. The last time Mom was here, I was pregnant with Cara and Mom flew in on my “due date”. I was supposed to have Cara on the 26th of October; Cara didn’t show up until the 3rd of November. Mom and my relationship had been strained for several years and being pregnant and past due didn’t help things. Once Cara was born, Mom ended up leaving early because the whole situation had only gotten worse. So, to make a long story not as long, I was dreading this visit. But, Cara is Mom’s granddaughter and I wasn’t going to deny either of them the chance to get to know one another. So far, things have been fine. Mom hasn’t made any snarky comments. She hasn’t fixated on Cara and Cara took to Mom like Cara has known Mom for Cara’s entire life. I’m not sure if Mom is chilling out and becoming more”normal” or if I&rsq

She’s Ten Miles Away
2007-10-06 09:57:13
My mom is ten miles away from my apartment! Even though I said that I didn’t care what the apartment looks like, I have spent the last four hours cleaning and throwing crap away and I am officially sweating like a pig. Oink.

Anticipation
2007-10-16 06:41:53
The prospect of finding him dead did not appeal to her. She had seen death before. She had watched her uncle take is last breath. She had checked his wrist and then his carotid for a pulse. But, that didn’t meant that she was prepared to do the same with her grandfather…the man who had done the majority of her raising. Would everyday be preparation for that inevitable moment? Would she wake every morning with the thought that he might be dead? How could anyone truly function with hat worry hanging over their head? In some twisted way, she accepted that burden. She understood that finding him dead or dying would be her atonement for all of the year of selfless giving that he had afforded her.

A Jazillionaire!
2007-10-16 05:45:02
If I could bottle my energy and mood I would be a jazillionaire. [is that even a number?] For some reason, when we went to bed last night, I couldn’t go to sleep. I ended up back in the living room on the computer. If I’m not absolutely dragging ass by 8 pm, then I know that a mood swing is coming. Great news for me since my productivity/creativity goes through the roof. Bad news for you and anyone who comes in direct contact with me and expects to have a linear conversation. So, just take a deep breath, refill your coffee and ride it out with me. This usually doesn’t last longer than a week.

I am Random
2007-10-15 10:44:13
I have had this post [or one like it] in my head for quite a while and I just can’t hold it back any longer. In the past couple of months, I’ve read several posts/articles about what the content of a blog should be, how you should handle comments and how often you should post. From what I can gather, readers expect article type posts; they want to learn something from what they read. While I have written stuff like that, I’m sorry guys but every post that I write isn’t gonna be a “lesson”. My brain may contain a plethora of useless knowledge but writing “articles” everyday is not only taxing, but I get bored doing it. Some days all I got is random bullshit. Take it or leave it; that’s me. If you think my blog entries are random, you should try talking to me on the phone. If articles are more you reading style, every Thursday I have an article at GNMParents. You can find the first paragraph or two here along with a link to the ar

Your Mom’s a Gamer
2007-10-22 12:43:48
The stereotypical image that most people have of gamers is either a plump and pasty teenage boy surrounded by empty Mountain Dew cans or the image of a plump and pasty middle aged guy who lives with his mom. [I’m not talking about you of course] Slowly, but surely, this stereotype is being turned on its head. Not only are chicks now playing games at an increased rate, some of those chicks are Moms. [gasp!] Heck, I’m one of them. With the advent of the Wii and the industry’s increased focus on casual gaming, even the most “normal” mom can delve into the world of video games. But, don’t despair, dear reader. Some moms are as “hard core” as the next pimply teenager. There’s just something about being able to pick up my PS3 controller and forget about being a mom for hours a second. [Thank God for understanding husbands.] So, while the gaming demographic hasn’t radically changed, it’s definitely becoming more diverse. Keep

Book Report

The Reincarnationist is one of those books where the reader has to take a “leap of faith” to enjoy the book. The title in-of-itself serves to weed out readers who aren’t willing or able to take such a leap. The story centers around Josh Ryder who was a victim of a bomb blast while he was taking photographs in Rome. This blast seems to have unlocked memories of his past lives and leads Josh on a quest to explain his memories. When Josh ends up at an archaeological dig in Rome and sees the mummified remains of a woman, his “memories” intensify to the point of being uncontrollable. …more.

Stupid Molar
2007-10-21 09:25:08
Cara has gotten in her first molar. Bottom left. It’s through the gum and nice and sharp. Tucker was the one who noticed the thing…I thought Cara was just being a pain in my ass for the general fun of it. Last night was horrible. Cara was down by 8pm. We didn’t hear a peep out of her. Since her mood had been crap for the whole day, I figured that we were finally getting a reprieve. Nope. She was just saving everything up until midnight. I normally get up with her twice during the night; midnight is around the normal first wake and then she will wake again around 6 am. Last night she was up at midnight and midnight thirty. 1:30 am, 2:00 am, 2:45 am, 4 am and then finally 7:20 am. She’s going down for a nap very, very soon.

From Here to Maternity
2007-10-20 08:18:44
Cara was thrashing the book case again today and found this gem. It was one of my step-mom’s old pregnancy books that she gave me right when she found out that I was pregnant with Cara. This book is horrible. The only thing it’s good for is a laugh. Gotta love those maternity outfits!

Aggressively Inarticulate
2007-10-26 05:46:34
I found this guy last night and started watching him on YouTube. I’m hooked. Plain and simple. His slam poetry is accessible and smart and best of all, he makes you think. And, considering my post from yesterday concerning personal convictions, I figured that this video would be a nice follow-up. So, grab your cup of coffee and settle in for three minutes and three seconds.

I Got Homework
2007-10-25 05:39:33
I got “homework” from my shrink [Hi, Dr. Fox!] yesterday. Can you believe that? Homework ! Not to make a long story too long, but my task is to compose a list of thing that are true for me. A list of things that are constant no matter what anyone says. Let me explain. You see, I have this problem where I take just about everything that anyone says to heart. Here’s a scenario for you: You just got your hair cut and colored. You know that you look H O T. You’ve got a bounce to your step and you’re shaking you ass just a bit more than you normally would. [You sexy thing you] On your way home, you stop into your local liquor grocery store to pick up some rum milk. As you’re paying for your booze milk, you overhear two assholes cashiers talking crap about your rockin’ hair. What’s your response? I figure that most people would shake off the comment and go on with their hot selves. Or, some might confront the brats but still know that they a

Not So Wordless
2007-10-24 09:48:39
You knew I wouldn’t be able to just do a “Wordless Wednesday” post and leave it at that. Wordless? Me?! That’ll be the day. I’m sitting here debating if I should go ahead and put Cara down for her morning nap. For the past couple of months, she’s been trying to give up the morning nap. Because of this, life has been interesting to say the least. Normally, I would just let her terrorize the kitten for a while and then chunk her in her bed. But, I’ve got a doctor’s appointment at 1 pm. I really need her to take a nap so that her head doesn’t spin around while we’re at Dr. Fox’s office. Decision made. I’m going to toss her in. This is most definitely not my favorite part of the day. As I’m typing this, Cara is in her crib screaming at me. It’s not a sad “Mom, where did you go?” kind of scream. It’s more along the lines of a very angry “How dare you leave me in here? Get

Family Time

My in-laws are here for a week. They got in last night and poor Cara just couldn’t hold out for them to get here. I just have to say that it is very odd to be typing this with everyone sitting in the living room with me. I’m sure we’re going to go get some lunch here soon. With lunch will hopefully come something interesting to read. If today’s offerings are boring you, might I suggest my gaming blog or perhaps you might try my archives.

Kids Are Americans Too
2007-10-30 04:00:12
I don’t like Bill O’Reilly. I used to be a huge fan, but now he just annoys me. That being said, I strongly believe that I am able to suspend my personal opinions to give a fair review of this book. Parent Bloggers put out the call for parents of all political leanings to review Kids Are Americans Too. When I read that Kids Are Americans Too is about kids knowing their legal rights, I was intrigued. You can read the entire review here.

The Golden Compass
2007-10-29 09:00:21
Some back story for you. Last year when Tucker and I drove home to Arkansas, we rented a book on CD. The book we rented was The Golden Compass . We loved the book. Anyway, I was at This Eclectic Life today and saw a purty lion at the bottom of her page. “The Golden Compass” was written next to the lion and I figured that it was just some sort of personality test…I LOVE personality tests. [I hadn’t made the connection yet with the book…I need more coffee] I searched “The Golden Compass” and kept getting hits for some movie that’s coming out in December. Out of frustration, I finally clicked on the “official” website. And then I realized what an absolute tool I am for not putting everything together and realizing that we had “read” the book already. [I told you I need more coffee] I’ve embedded the movie trailer. The casting looks freakin’ awesome and I can’t wait to see the movie. If you h

My Guard Dogs
2007-10-28 05:25:54
I’m a work-at-home mom. Everyday, Tucker goes to work and Cara and I stay at our apartment while he’s gone. Granted, we’re not shut-ins or anything…but we are home for most of the day. For the most part, we live in a decent part of town and crime isn’t a big issue. So, I’ve never really been that concerned about staying home by myself. Until Thursday. I got a memo from our apartment complex. The heading read: IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! Truthfully, I was expecting a notice about picking up dog poop or about the importance of not leaving trash bags in the breeze way. I was wrong. Apparently on Wednesday of last week, a man was held at gun point and robbed. In our apartment complex! Also, that same day, a man was caught climbing into someone’s window. The guy ran off once he realized that the people were home. Scary stuff, huh? It’s times like these that I’m really glad that I have “scary” looking dogs. Case i

When I Tried To Be J-Lo
2007-11-02 12:37:05
When I started college, I had been dating the same jerk guy for over two years. Like most high school romances, this one wasn’t meant to weather the turbulence that is college. I know that now, but when I got dumped, I thought my world was going to end. I wrote horrible poetry and wore dark clothes and generally felt sorry for myself. My best friend was a hairstylist and decided that what I needed was a new hairstyle…something totally different. At the time I had long dark hair and she convinced me that blonde was the way to go. “Like J-Lo?” I asked. “Exactly like J-Lo.” My friend replied. Off we went to the hair supply store. We bought bleach. We bought developer. We bought honey colored toner. I was ready for my “transformation”! My friend cut my hair in a funky stacked bob with a razor; I was looking H O T! Then came the bleach. After the first twenty minutes, she checked my hair - now a lovely shade of pumpkin orange. More bleach.

Somebody Stop Me

Man, oh man. My weekend is officially screwed. I have avoided all of the Guitar Hero games like the plague. I have serious games to play; I don’t have time for frivolous games like Guitar Hero. [cough] Unfortunately, all of my efforts were for naught. The husband has officially undermined my authority and has brought the damn game home. Bastard. The cute little guitar is sitting in the corner right now…mocking me. To read the rest of my rant, CLICK HERE.

Buy Her Wood
2007-11-09 08:16:45
As I might have mentioned once or twice, Cara’s birthday was last weekend. In preparation for the blessed event, my mom and in-laws had been quizzing us on what presents they should buy for the rugrat. Initially, [as in several months ago] we said, “Get her anything! She really likes kitties, but we figure she’ll like whatever you get her.” What more could a grandparent ask for than carte blanche permission to buy their grandchild whatever they wanted? And then Dora and Boots were recalled. [See! I told you they were EVIL!] Every time I turned on the television, something else was being ripped from the shelves due to excessive lead levels. Hold on. Time out. Am I the only one who thinks that any level of lead is excessive?! I feel better now. Back to the story. I meticulously picked through Cara’s hodge podge of toys. Most are stuffed animals and books with the occasional block tossed in for good measure. None of her toys were on any of the recall list

I Don’t Want To Fall Back!
2007-11-09 04:54:18
Am I the only Mom living through “fall back” hell?! We had our schedule down. We were like clockwork. Up at 7 am, morning nap at 10 am, lunch by noon, afternoon nap at 2 pm, bath by 7 pm and then in bed no later than 8 pm. Clockwork, I’m telling you! Then Cara started “giving up” her morning nap. When did I give her permission to do that?! No big deal. Move the afternoon nap up to 1 pm and we were doing ok. Not great…but we/I was coping. Then. Then! Then this stupid “daylight savings” bullshit had to kick in. WHY?! Read this: “DST’s clock shifts complicate timekeeping and can disrupt meetings, travel, billing, record keeping, medical devices, and heavy equipment;[6] they also serve as twice-yearly fire safety reminders.[7] Many computer-based systems can adjust their clocks automatically, but this can be limited and error-prone, particularly when DST rules change.[8]“ How is this a good idea?! Now poor Cara is st

The Daring Book for Girls
2007-11-08 08:41:45
“For every girl with an independent spirit and a nose for trouble, here is the no-boys-allowed guide to adventure.” The Daring Book for Girls hit me like a ton of bricks…but in a good way. I had heard about The Dangerous Book for Boys on NPR, and the idea that Buchanan and Peskowitz had written a chick version really excited me. Maybe this makes me shallow, [oh well] but the first thing that I fell in love with was the cover. It’s glittery and sturdy and it made me want to open it up and see what the book was all about. Also, there’s an “old school” feeling to the book. I can imagine this book on a 1950’s teen girl’s book shelf. The point is that it’s wholesome and that’s not a bad thing. It’s actually refreshing. Have you always wanted to know how to whistle with two fingers? Check out page 25. Want to know how to build a campfire? Page 127 please. Buchanan and Peskowitz also included Robert’s Rules
