Calling all GFI Anglers 2007-08-28 22:49:47 Come and take a look at our new website for GFI anglers at garyezzo.net
Carolina Fishing from Grandpa’s Dock is a little corner of my world. I am by no means an expert or guide, nor do I aspire to those titles but ever since my first fishing experience as a four year old, the anticipation, hope and sometimes the trill of the catch has never left me. I realize our new site will attract those intrigued by the rich variety of sport fishing along the South Carolina salt water marshes and fresh water ponds and streams.
Most of my fishing is done from our back yard and dock on the Wando River (or shrimping in Bulls Bay.) While I can’t promise a posting every day or every week, I am hoping to keep the site relatively current and active. We’ll see how well I do. Take your time, browse through the various articles and photos. Have fun and enjoy the reports. Here’s is one late afternoon adventure from my journal.

Perfect Sleeper Wakes Up 2007-08-09 21:59:33 Question:
“Help! After 10 days of “I’m the perfect eating/sleeping/pooping baby” …. our son has become ‘awake’! His main issue this week is going down for naps. He either: a. cries really hard for an extended amount of time (haven’t been able to stand it for longer than about 15 min.), we go in, pat, check diaper, etc. then it starts over - and he never naps or b. lies contentedly in his crib (awake) for over an hour and then sleeps the last 30-45 min. We’ve been working really hard not to over stimulate him (10 min. wake max) but we can’t seem to find the right balance.”
Answer:
“Yes, they do wake up! You didn’t mention how often you are feeding. Since he’s been so laid back the first 10 days, you may need to monitor the timing of feeds, keeping it fairly close to the 2.5 to 3 hour mark. But also, check your diet - dairy, yogurt, carbonated drinks which would include carbonated water, spicy food Read more:Perfect

Two Week Old Champ at Sleeping 2007-07-24 05:34:36 Question:
“My daughter seems to be a champ at sleeping. She is two weeks old. After the late evening feeding, is it OK for us to let her sleep until she wakes (approx. 4 hrs.) for the middle of the night feeding. The rest of the day she is on a 2 1/2 - 3 hr. schedule and really thriving.
All of her growth indicators are right on and healthy - so I’m not so much worried about that, just making sure I’m giving her (and my supply) the best start possible.”
Answer:
“We would suggest not allowing her to sleep longer than 4 hours at night for the first three weeks. After that you can let her wake up naturally. You are doing a great job in monitoring her using the Healthy Baby Growth Charts and do want to make sure your milk supply is well established.”

The No Cry Baby 2007-07-17 07:01:12 Question:
“I know it shouldn’t be a concern, but our son doesn’t cry. Not sure if he was born with the “I’m super laid back” syndrome or what, but we’ve only heard him really cry 2 times in the past 8 days. When he is hungry, he whimpers and sucks his hands/ smacks his lips, but doesn’t cry. He doesn’t cry when he goes down for his nap. He doesn’t cry when he’s wet/dirty. I’m hoping he’s just a really good baby .. what do you think???”
Answer:
“Crying is tied first to: temperament, second, to hunger or comfort need, third to ailment, (reflux, colic, pain). If the second and third ones are not issues than temperament becomes the dominate force. Therefore if he is passive in his crying, good news bad news. The good news is he becomes a self-soother early on, the bad news, you need to watch him more closely because his contentment may turn into complacency when not feeling well. Make sure you are fee
Growing Kids God’s Way ~ New Look 2007-09-13 20:33:10 The new Growing
Kids God’s Way student workbooks are available for the 2007 fall classes. We trust the new look, along with some structural and content changes will deepen the student’s class experience. Our long time instructors will first notice the removal of the Foundations Chapter found in previous editions. To relieve any potential concerns, much of the content was relocated to other chapters, transferred to an appendix, or will eventually be moved to this website for download access.
Second, the appendix section has also changed with the deletion of some titles and addition of others. We added Let Them Play (Appendix Two which documents the important developmental role ‘play’ has in the life of a child), and Appendix Five, The Growing Kids Topic Pool. This appendix consolidates a number of topics into one location to better serve the student. All the appendixes, including those found in previous editions will be moved under the Class Facilitator’s Page of this
Playpen/Room time Re-training 2007-10-22 23:50:51 Question:
“Playpen time used to be my son’s favorite time of the day. Admittedly, I haven’t been consistent with it for the last few months. He is now 16 months old and is having difficulty re-adjusting to his play time. I couldn’t find a solution to my dilemma in Babywise, is there anything I can do to help him readjust?”
Answer:
“Your Babywise II book has lots of information on this very issue in the Waketime Activities chapter. It is very common for all kids to go through times when a little re-training is needed to get them back into playpen time, room time, saying please, thank you, coming right away, cleaning their room, remembering to put the toilet seat down!! Anyway, you get the point. Re-training will be a regular part of your life as a mom, but you are in good company.
As with most re-training, often the best way to go about it is to step back and start again with small steps and then just gradually increase things as they get better.

You are never going to know it all! 2007-10-19 18:56:49 Attention all Mums who LOVE being a Mum but sometimes need encouragement to know that they’re not alone on this tiring, wonderful, often thankless, most rewarding journey of a lifetime called PARENTHOOD. This blog is for you.
My goal is to endeavor to share with you things that I’m learning on my own journey as a Mum of 4 children. If I hear of any interesting tips or things that help to make our task a little easier, I’m planning on sharing them here in this blog. One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given about parenting was that ‘You are never going to know it all’. That’s probably true of most things in life but I have remembered that often over the last 10 years I’ve been a Mum and so figure I’ll keep trying to learn as much as I can along the way and share it with as many people as I can too!
Let me introduce myself: My name is Charissa and have been married to an amazing man, David, for the past 14 years. We have been blessed with 4 precious children, Benj
Parenting – the Spiritual Factor 2007-11-01 05:15:29 I have been amazed at the way God moves! Even more, I am amazed at how God has transformed communities and even our nation throughout history. With this in mind, I look to a brief overview of spiritual awakenings.
Spiritual awakenings, whether in biblical or Church history, manifest patterns that are similar, often strikingly so. While all of the following elements may not be present in each instance, for the most part awakenings progress through a cycle whose phases include these various aspects of God’s working. 1) Awakenings are usually preceded by a time of spiritual depression, apathy and gross sin, in which a majority of nominal Christians are hardly different from the members of secular society, and the churches seem to be asleep. … 2) An individual or small group of God’s people becomes conscious of their sins and backslidden condition, and vows to forsake all that is displeasing to God. … 3) As some Christians begin to yearn for a manifestation o Read more:Parenting
Anne Marie’s wisdom 2007-10-29 21:15:07 Hello again. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Charissa and I am married to David and together we have 4 beautiful children ranging in age from 5 up to 10 years old. As promised last time, I thought I would share with you some of the amazing wisdom Anne Marie
Ezzo shared with us while we were with them in South Carolina recently.
Our family had the privilege of spending 5 weeks this summer with the Ezzos in their home in Mount Pleasant. Now, I say ’summer’ but as we come from Australia, it was actually our winter! The fact that we got to miss the coldest, wettest part of our winter was blessing enough but having the privilege of Anne Marie’s wisdom ‘on tap’ for 5 weeks was an even bigger blessing!
So, on the morning before we left, Anne Marie & I were having our morning swim and I ‘took the plunge’ and asked her one of the scariest questions I could think of! I asked her ‘Now that you have spent 5 weeks with our f
Day/Night Confusion 2007-11-06 02:01:12 Question:
“My newborn sleeps great all day, but is up almost all night. What can I do to get this turned around?”
Answer:
“This is very common during the early weeks and is addressed in Babywise under Problem Solving. Fortunately it is also a pattern that, with a little consistency, can be corrected within a week or two. If you have a little one who wants to conk out after 6:00 pm or so, resist the urge to just let him sleep until he wakes on his own. If he starts his “long sleep” at 6:00 pm, he’s likely to wake for his “middle of the night feeding” at around 10:00 or 11:00 pm, and then go down for the rest of his long sleep only to wake up, well rested and ready to start the day at around 2:00 or 3:00 am!!! Yikes! Or you may have one who wants to get his deep sleep during the middle of the day, and party all night. (double yikes)
The key is to keep the feedings consistent throughout the daytime hours, even if that means waking Read more:Night
Couch Time 2007-11-15 03:37:13 Question:
“My husband and I don’t practice “couch time” per se, but we DO try to make a point of “catching up on each other’s day,” while we get dinner ready. Isn’t that good enough?”
Answer:
“There is such a good reason why “couch time” is encouraged throughout the On Becoming books, from Babywise to Teenwise. There is just no substitute for mom and dad taking a few minutes each day to stop everything and totally focus on each other. Think of it like this. There are plenty of times during the day when you and your children will “work” together folding laundry, picking up after play time, working in the yard, etc. but do those times in any way compare to those special moments when you take your preschooler on to your lap to read her a book, or when you give your 7 year old your undivided attention while he tells you what happened at school that day? I can promise you that your child knows the differ Read more:Couch
Fruit and Blessings 2007-11-13 20:51:20 The following testimony was recently forwarded to me and is posted here with permission. This testimony serves as encouragement to keep pressing on with the biblical parenting principles taught in Growing Kids God’s Way.
Howie’s Testimony
“This past Saturday, we had pre-arranged for a company to come in a clean some of our carpeted rooms. We had given our two children, Joel(11yrs) and Ainsley(8yrs) some instructions about where to play while this was going on. When the man arrived and began cleaning carpet, our kids came in and out a couple of times asking questions and observing the man working. My youngest had asked if she could stand in a adjoining room and watch and I said, “Sure.” My oldest was also watching at a distance and conversing with me from time to time. Both of them were very well behaved. At one point, the man stopped cleaning, cut the machine off and asked, “Can I ask you a personal question?” I said, “Sure.&rdqu Read more:Blessings
