Who’s on First?
2007-10-09 21:12:33
Earlier in the season, it was reported that Lindsey Broad would be playing the role of Vanessa, who is introduced as a possible love interest for Dan in episode 6. However, TV Guide and others have reported that Jessica Szohr (who played Barry Watson’s neighbor on Seventh Heaven and also had a recurring bit on What About Brian?) has won the role. Anyone know what happened? Was Lindsey replaced? Or was IMDB just plain wrong? The CW web site does not yet have a mention of Vanessa. Share This

Brand New Bag
2007-10-08 07:22:22
When Serena dangled about her Coach bag on Gossip Girl, my friend who works at Coach noticed immediately. She commented, correctly, that there would likely be a lot of interest in the bag following the show. She was right. Unlike Serena’s boots, which were surprisingly affordable, the Coach Legacy Satchel (available in black or whiskey) will set you back a few dollars. The bag retails at Coach for $768. Share This

How Do You Like Me Now?
2007-10-07 09:27:11
Despite concerns about Gossip Girl ratings, the show is continuing to build an audience. So far, Gossip Girl is the top-rated new show among teens aged 12-17 years. In fact, Gossip Girl’s numbers compare favorably with historically popular shows among teens. The Gossip Girl premiere scored higher ratings than the openings of Josh Schwartz’ other teen project, The OC, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Currently, the average age of the Gossip Girl viewer is 22.8 years old. That’s interesting to me since many of my 30-something friends are definitely calling it their guilty pleasure. To build an older audience, expect more adult-oriented story lines (I’m totally looking forward to the Kelly Rutherford and ridiculously hot Matt Settle hook-up that’s bound to happen). That trend has helped shows like Beverly Hills 90210 build an audience - it helps that younger female viewers tend to be very loyal. I can vouch for that - my frie

Not Such a Gay Ol’ Time for Dan
2007-10-19 08:34:51
As a follow-up to a reader’s question about Dan and his sexuality, I found this on www.afterelton.com: While it’s a brief interview, it’s also the first time I saw a major media outlet ask if the TV version of Dan might follow the path of his literary inspiration. Badgley’s response: “Yeah, I think he’s straight-up gay in the books. But I don’t think network TV really has the balls to make one of their [teenage] series regulars gay. Let’s say the show builds up to become a big hit, then I think they’d maybe explore it in year three or four. It would be an interesting thing to do. It could bring in a whole different demographic.” This is pretty consistent with my response. Share This

Who’s Missing on Gossip Girl?
2007-10-18 06:26:55
I read an interesting post over at Megan McArdle’s blog about the absence of Jewish characters on Gossip Girl - especially considering that the show takes place in New York City and not, say, the rural South (not a slam, it’s where I grew up and there are very few Jewish people in rural North Carolina). It got me thinking about what other ethnic groups are missing from the show and whether it’s a purposeful marketing decision or whether it’s a representation of the population of an elite private school on the Upper East Side.  I personally would expect it to be WASP-y but then I didn’t go to private school on the Upper East Side (in contrast, I went to public school first in a rural community and then in a city). The only real “ethnic” roles on the show so far belong to Nan Zhang (as Kati) and to Nicole Fiscella (as Isabel). What do you think?  Who is missing?  Is it a fair representation? Share This

Is the Chace On?
2007-10-18 02:21:09
More details have surfaced about our favorite American Idol’s schoolgirl-like crush on Chace Crawford (who was not even seen in this week’s episode - no worries, he’s prominently featured next week). Carrie Underwood, the most successful American Idol to date, told People magazine: He’s really cute. I’ve met him and he seems like a really nice guy. He’s got cool hair, he’s a nice height and he just has beautiful blue eyes. Ahh, the basis for a lasting relationship, no doubt. The relationship caught many by surprise considering that Underwood is a couple of years Chace’s senior - and had been seriously linked to the Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Romo until recently. Share This

“Dare Devil” Recap
2007-10-17 21:01:57
Blair is throwing a sleepover! It’s her big fall event (well, after the Kiss On the Lips Party). Dan makes plans for a date with Serena. Serena forgets that she has plans and Blair is annoyed that Serena can’t make the sleepover. Eric makes plans to leave the rehab center but Lily tells her that it is going to take awhile. He is angry and believes that Lily is keeping him at the rehab center on purpose. Dan takes Serena on a fancy date. He takes her in a limo to a fancy dinner that he clearly cannot afford. Jenny goes to Blair’s sleepover in Serena’s place. She has fun in the beginning but realizes that it is not her style. Rufus calls Allison to talk about the sale of the painting. A man answers the phone and tells him that Allison is in the shower. Rufus realizes that she’s having an affair. Dan is concerned about the price of his dinner date (especially since Serena ordered the $78 duck) but Serena takes care of it. He feels awkward at first but eventually decides t

Gossip Girl Online
2007-10-16 20:40:34
So, I decided to check out Gossip Girl in Second Life…  It was such a hassle.  I’m not a stranger to Second Life, having created an identity before on my desktop.  But my laptop wasn’t happy. Signing up with a new identity was easy.  But that’s where the easy stopped. You have to install the program on each computer that you use it with.  So, I installed it on my computer (it was almost 70MB).  The program wasn’t happy with my color settings.  Then it wasn’t happy with my video card.  It was one thing after the next. So, I’m not going to play this evening - it was really too much of an effort.  Perhaps I’ll try again tomorrow at my desktop. Any of you playing along? Share This

Is Romo No mo’?
2007-10-16 06:23:11
Does our favorite American Idol have a new man?  What happened to Tony Romo? Maybe being a football widow isn’t so appealing to Carrie Underwood.  If rumors are to be believed, Carrie was seen “getting cozy” with Chace Crawford (that’s Nate to you and me) in New York over the weekend.  The two reportedly kissed and canoodled before heading to Mario Batali’s Del Posto restaurant for dinner and then drinks at Soho Grand and the Rose Bar in Gramercy Park Hotel. Hmm.  That Oklahoma girl sure seems to have a thing for those Texas boys.  Is this a good thing - for either of them? Share This

Blake Lively Dresses for the Cure

Blake Lively recently attended the “VIVA LA CURE” Benefit for EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund. The Women’s Cancer Research Fund, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, was established to support innovative research, education, and outreach for the early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all women’s cancers. Prior CW actresses involved in the EIF effort include The OC’s Mischa Barton and Gilmore Girls‘ Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. You can see more photos from the event here. Share This

Role Model
2007-10-22 12:52:34
It’s been confirmed. We already knew that Caridee would appear on an upcoming episode of Gossip Girl. What we didn’t know were the circumstances surrounding the appearance. We do now. More after the jump (warning - spoilerish). Caridee will make her debut on next week’s episode, “The Handmaiden’s Tale.” Caridee plays the role of Bart Bass’ date. Bart Bass is Chuck Bass’ father, who, as you might recall, has some sort of history with Lily van der Woodsen (Serena’s mother). Lily asks Rufus (Dan’s father) out to make Bart jealous. Share This

Ratings, shmatings
2007-10-22 07:18:28
Gossip Girl’s ratings continue to disappoint number-watchers. According to the Nielsen ratings, the series is only averaging a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating, a 1.8 adults 18-34 rating and 2.4 million viewers, 2 million fewer viewers than the Gilmore Girls was drawing at the same point last season (though note to Nielsens: there’s a huge difference between a new show, three months in, and a wildly popular established show). So the CW is giving up, right? No way. Gossip Girl is the CW’s highest rated new show and it’s a hit among the demographic that advertisers are happiest about (18-34 year old women). But even more interesting is that Gossip Girl is a “hit” in ways not measured by the traditional Nielsen ratings: it is the most downloaded TV program on Apple’s iTunes and the most watched show in streaming on Yahoo.  I checked this morning - “Dare Devil” (last week’s episode) is number 1 and “Bad News Blair” is num

Is Kelly Bishop Moving to Manhattan?
2007-10-22 05:28:16
Nah, that’s just the rumor mill at work. The Gilmore Girls‘ Kelly Bishop will not be making the leap to Gossip Girl. The reason for the speculation had a lot to do with the description of Serena’s grandmother. More info after the jump (a little bit spoiler-ish so don’t read on if you don’t want to know). The audition notes for the role read: Celia Rhodes: 58-68. Serena’s grandmother & Lily’s mother. A larger than life character, wealthy, manipulative woman who clings to the traditions - Debutante Balls, etc… of her rarefied class. The character of Celia makes her debut in Episode 9, tying in with the Debutante Ball. The identity of the actress is yet to be announced. Is it just me or wouldn’t Lauren Bacall be awesome? I know that she’s older than 68 but: 1, she doesn’t look it; and 2, she’s a household name (Josh Schwartz, can you say “ratings bonanza” for an older demographic). Share This

Gossip Girl Fan Fiction?

More fiction?  The television series is already based on a book series.  But nonetheless, I’ve heard rumblings of some fan fiction floating out there in the blogosphere - especially regarding the Dan/Serena/Vanessa triangle and Dan’s sexuality.  I’d love to publish some here at Gossip Girl Report. Ozzy Rocks Gossip Girl?
2007-10-21 19:09:12
Oh yeah. The range of music on Gossip Girl runs the gamut from Henry Mancini to Rihanna. So I shouldn’t be surprised to hear Ozzy Osbourne on the show… But I was. Ozzy’s “Mama, I’m Comin’ Home” was featured on the “Dare Devil” episode last week. Talk about your classic heavy metal - we’re talking almost twenty years ago. The song was featured alongside Little Ones’ There’s a Pot Brewin‘, Prima J’s Rocks tar LP (already used in a fan’s Gossip Girl video), Cadence Blaze’s Came to Dance, Two Hours Traffic’s Ringing in My Ears, Kat Deluna’s Whine Up, All Wrong and the Plans Change’s I’m Doing It Again and Zooland’s Get Ur Party On. The “It” Dress
2007-10-27 07:31:22
Have you seen the dress? If you have to ask which dress, you’re clearly not paying attention. That dress. The Carrie Underwood dress. The Taylor Momsen dress.  The “it” dress of the season.  The cream taffeta dress with hand-embroidered gold chain detail and lots of swing. Imagine my surprise to find out that it is a Paula Hian creation.  I’ve met Paula - she works just around the corner from my own office in Philadelphia’s trendy Manayunk.  I’ve been to her fashion show at the Union League.  Kudos to Paula! So How Do You Define Serious?
2007-10-27 07:07:20
Chace Crawford has reportedly confirmed that he is dating Carrie Underwood, despite his appearance on Tyra (was that taped?). He has said: We’re just hanging, having a good time, dating around. It’s good. I love country music and she’s very classy. (Hey Chace, I like country music, too.  Call me!) Hmm. Carrie, for her part, has declared that she wants a “serious” relationship. Maybe it’s the age difference, but Chace doesn’t sound terribly serious to me… Share This

America’s Next Top Pop Star?
2007-10-26 09:58:48
So either today’s Tyra was taped eons ago (I’ll confess that I don’t watch the show) or Chace Crawford is a big fat liar.  He clearly said that he was available.  Hmm.  Wonder what Carrie thinks? Tyra interviewed Leighton and Chace.  They were both adorable.  Leighton seems very comfortable in front of the camera. The best part, however, was the ‘behind the scenes’ film with Penn and Blake.  Blake showed off her chocolate Maltese poodle, Penny.  Apparently, there are quite a few dogs (small dogs!) on set. Blake also confessed that she’s known Penn for years - and that he released a pop single when he was 11.  “Be That Way” was apparently not too successful because I haven’t been able to dig it up on Amazon.com or iTunes.  But I’m still looking…  Any leads are appreciated! Anybody else catch the gang on Tyra? Share This

Don’t Cry for Tony Romo
2007-10-25 08:15:31
Now that Carrie Underwood has ditched him for Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford, he’s playing the field a little bit… and not just for the Cowboys. The “star” quarterback (I’m from Philly, so I have to use that term loosely) is apparently drowning his sorrows with One Tree Hill’s Sophia Bush. Hmm. She’s also on the rebound. Think it will last? Mind-numbing or Mind-numbingly brilliant?
2007-10-25 06:34:43
The folks at New York magazine’s Daily Intelligencer take on children’s book author Lesley M.M. Blume…  and boy, do the sparks fly. You can check out their piece “In Which We Defend the Honor of Gossip Girl” here as a response to Blume’s piece “15 Going on 50:  How Gossip Girl is Killing Youth Culture.”  Then come back and dish.  Fair?  Over the top?  Does Gossip Girl really represent “nothing less than the soft death of youth culture and rebellion and self-determinism.” Hmm.  Let me think on this one.  I’ll be back. Serena or Vanessa?
2007-10-25 06:18:04
So who deserves Dan?  Do either?  Be sure to vote in the new poll in the sidebar. And what did you think about the casting of Jessica Szohr as Vanessa ?  I, for one, was disappointed.  She was a little too Cyndi Lauper/Madonna 80s throwback, when in the books she’s supposed to be more Smiths.  You know, edgy… Who would have made a better Vanessa?  My pick?  Thora Birch.  She’s pretty, edgy and cool. “The Handmaiden’s Tale” Recap
2007-10-24 20:59:29
It’s time for the masked ball! Everyone is making preparations… except for Dan. Serena hasn’t asked him yet - and he’s not sure why. And all is well with S and B. They are back to being old pals… for now. Serena agrees to be one of Blair’s “ladies” for the ball. Blair encourages Serena to ask Dan, which she plans to do… Only when she calls to do it, she hears a new voice on the end of the phone. It’s Vanessa, Dan’s old “friend” from years ago. But Dan tells Serena that it’s Jenny. That proves a bit tricky since Jenny is running errands for Blair. Nate witnesses his father fretting about being chosen to take Eleanor’s company public. It makes him wonder about other things that have been strange lately - including the missing money from before which has no mysteriously reappeared. While flipping through his passbook, he finds drugs that aren’t his (he is solely, as Chuck points out, an herb

Chace Crawford is Bringing Sexy Back
2007-10-24 18:47:51
At Justin Timberlake’s restaurant, apparently. According to People.com, Chace was spotted enjoying some “Southern Hospitality” with his new (dare I say it) girlfriend/regular date, Carrie Underwood on Tuesday night. They ate wings (not so Southern) and pecan pie (very Southern) at the restaurant before scooting out. On today (Wednesday), Chace accompanied Carrie to the set of Live with Regis and Kelly where he ran into the guest of the day… Blake Lively! (Photo source) Share This
