Pending Home Sales Worst In Six Years
2007-09-05 18:25:26
Although pending home sales for July are at their lowest levels in almost six years, the current downturn can be just the bargain long-term investors should be looking for. On Wednesday, the National Association of Realtors announced that the Pending Homes Sales Index, a forward-looking indicator, showed that existing-home sales are likely to decline in the coming months as mortgage turmoil work its way through the housing market. The NAR, the country’s largest trade organization, represents more than 1.3 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries, said that based on contracts signed in July, its Pending Home Sales Index fell 12.2% to a reading of 89.9 in July from the June index of 102.4. The level was 16.1% lower than July 2006 when the index stood at 107.1. (more…)

Make work cultures fit the needs and aspirations of young adults, and they will stay here
2007-08-26 22:59:24
Replacing baby boomers who retire presents a continuing problem for companies in the Pittsburgh region. And there is no easy solution in sight. Our universities and colleges attract many young students to Pittsburgh, but after graduation they leave in droves for jobs elsewhere. The Coro Report of April 2003 showed that between 1980 and 2000, the population of 20- to 34-year-olds in the 10-county Pittsburgh region dropped by more than 200,000 for a 32 percent decline from 1980 levels. Between 1990 and 2000, the region experienced another 6 percent drop. Of the solutions offered to this dilemma, few, if any, have focused on the need for Pittsburgh companies to restructure traditional corporate culture to make it more acceptable to younger employees. In the past 25-plus years, I have consulted with corporate leaders throughout the United States and in more than 30 countries around the globe. I have seen them create corporate environments that attract the most talented, younger people whil

The internet has opened a whole new world for the astute shopper. It’s now pretty easy to find rare items that in the past could have taken months or even years to source. Now, thanks to Ebay and other online auction sites, you have instant access to a massive range of new, used and collectable goods, all from your own home with the click of your mouse. However, this means that an item that once would have gathered dust in the back of a second hand store now has global exposure, and collectors worldwide have the opportunity to get their grubby mitts on it. This could mean a bidding frenzy on Ebay. So here’s a few tips to get you on the right path to snagging a bargain. 1 - Search for misspelled items. With the thousands upon thousands of items listed on Ebay each and every hour worldwide, chances are that there are a lot of sellers that accidentally misspell keywords in the title that will prevent the item from showing up in a regular search. If few people can find the au

Is It Time for Wireless E-Commerce?
2007-08-26 22:46:50
The answer is yes. According to Bill Watterson, author of Calvin and Hobbes, “The problem with the future is that it keeps turning into the present.” Businesses are well aware of mobile phones’ potential for wireless marketing, advertising, sales, and payments although many thought this potential would be realized somewhere down the road. But it seems like that future is now here. Critical Mass Almost a third of North Americans now say they could not live without their cell phone and these devices are rapidly evolving into more than a mere portable tool for voice communications. According to a recent study [AP 2006] Americans have become addicted to their cell phones, with four out of 10 adults aged 18 to 29 considering dropping their landline service. In fact, almost a third (29%) say they could not live without their cell phone. The mobile has reached critical mass. Thirty-five percent of those surveyed say they send SMS text messages, including 65% of those ages 18-29 and 37%

Team Building with Custom Made Logo Apparel
2007-08-26 22:42:43
Do you run a small business or a small team which needs to work together? Giving your employees embroidered apparel builds a sense of team spirit and camaraderie. In addition, it rewards your employees and shows them that they are part of something. If your people face the public, its another easy chance to show customers your name. The process that creates logo apparel is called embroidery. You may have not thought about this much but you very likely have embroidered apparel in your closet. That little sewn picture on your polo shirt is embroidery. Embroidery businesses exist in a variety of sizes. This is because of the investment needed. An embroidery machine capable of sewing 20 pieces at once is more expensive and complex to maintain compared to a machine which sews one piece at a time. For 1-100 pieces, a small company will give you the best price and delivery time. For 100 or more pieces, you want your quote from a “contract” embroiderer. Price and delivery depend on th

Building Out Your Small Business
2007-08-26 22:33:57
Just as on the Internet no one knows you’re a dog, no one needs to know that you’re not a mega-corporation. Technology really can level the playing field between your small business and Mega-Global Co. But which technologies? There are so many choices and so many pitfalls that you might be inclined to just throw up your hands in despair. The process doesn’t have to be that complicated. There are several key decisions you can make that will catapult your business toward success, without your having to spend a lot of money. To help illustrate those options, we approached this from the perspective of a business that, let’s say, recently received several large contracts and now needs to expand its operation to meet that demand. Before hitting CDW for a shopping spree, though, the first step should be developing an overall purchasing strategy. Without that, you may end up hurting yourself in the long run. Once that strategy is in place, then you can identify the few k

Secure Your Business
2007-08-26 22:30:04
The SMB network security market is heating up. In-Stat estimates that the worldwide security appliance market is poised for steady, if slowing, growth, reaching over $5.5 billion by 2011. A large part of this growth is sure to be driven small businesses, all of which need protection. Forrester estimates that 39% of small businesses will “significantly upgrade their security environment” and 44% will “significantly upgrade their disaster recovery capabilities” this year. Fortunately, there’s more competition than there was a few years ago, and, as a result, it’s now possible to buy better products for less money. The level of quality across the board is high as well; while some are better than others, you’ll get a decent level of protection with any of the products I tested. They’re all competent and, if properly configured and maintained, they’ll all protect your network. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but I’m happ

Continuous Learning
2007-11-18 01:20:51
Right now there are a ton of teachers out there to help our kids learn new skills. They range from piano lessons, to tutoring, to second languages. There is an entire subset of business that focuses and caters exclusively to children. I think it’s great for our kids to learn new skills and to experience things they otherwise would not. I do think that it is very interesting that we will sign our kids up for programs in which they will learn a new skill or to improve upon a skill they already have, but as adults, many of us will not do the same for ourselves. I will forever consider myself a ‘student’, and I seek to learn as many new things as I can, every second of the day. I know there is not enough time in life for me to learn all that I want, but I am going to try my hardest to cram it all in. (more…)

2007-11-16 01:16:49
Millions of business entrepreneurs across the Internet tap into freelance marketplaces to hire freelancers for their projects. In fact, the freelance/outsourcing model is becoming more popular to do business in the 21st century. It allows all parties (entrepreneurs and freelancers) to work out of their homes. It exposes both buyers and sellers to the choices available in the global marketplace across international boundaries. Best of all, it is a direct trade of skill for money, without all that bogus bureaucracy getting in the way. For instance, you don’t have to worry about the employee having a green card or providing their tax information, as the freelance site does this for you. While you can ask for evidence of credentials such as diplomas and certificates, the real thing that counts is whether the freelancer you’re hiring can do the work. The freelance marketplace allows you to evaluate freelancers by their work and not their resume. There are dozens of freelance mar

Online business-for-sale marketplaces allow sellers to reach a large number of potential buyers and provide resources for owners considering putting their business up for sale. Mike Handelsman, general manager of San Francisco-based BizBuySell, the internet’s largest business-for-sale marketplace, answers sellers’ questions about listing a business for sale online. Q:What should a seller do to prepare for listing a business for sale online? A: Allowing yourself enough time is key.
