Gastown, Night Scene - Revisited...again
2008-03-29 13:35:00
The fun of working in Oils and oil Pastels, is that you can go back and work on the painting until you are satisfied with the result. After looking at this one for a while and after having fresh eyes look at it and honestly tell me what they thought. I went back in and did some extra work to define it and correct a few perspective issues. Here is the final.

Meadows in Oil Pastels
2008-03-30 16:52:00
I guess when the spell is broken the art comes gushing! LOL. No I don't want to set this one up as anything more than a sketch and a sort of art stretching exercises. Here it is then a 3" x 5" entitled Meadows and a look forward to spring! On eBay

Sunrise

Another small Oil Pastel sketch. This one was done at night in dim light and without my glasses. I don't like the sky. I want to work on it some more, but the paper has no texture and it is very hard to add colour!

WC sketching

My brushes needed some exercise tonight, and since someone else decided to paint tonight, I decided to sketch her while she was focused on her work. OK, yes. I love watercolours.

Marsh Sunrise

Ok so a few friends looked at the sketch in the post below and everyone thought the sky was water, so I flipped the sketch around and what do you know, they were right! I fixed the trees to look like reeds and made the sketch what it always wanted to be. What do you think?

Sometimes its just about colour
2008-04-09 23:01:00
I ran across this painting by Julian Alden Weir tonight and just fell in love with it. I sat back and stared at it for a long time. How unbelievably stunning! My artist mind then started asking the usual questions: Composition, unity, balance etc... The answer to these questions were mostly negative. The three trees smack in the middle of the painting, the orange ones to the side, the uneasy sloping horizon, these were all no-nos, so how did this painting work so well? Then it hit me. Colour! Light! Key! Yes! Some times a cigar is just a cigar and some times a painting is just about colour.

Three Sketches
2008-04-26 19:42:00
It has been a long time since I posted my pen and pencil sketches to this blog. I looked back through my sketch book and chose three to share with you today. The first one was done today at a neighborhood park. It is a loose pen drawing of the park with the houses surrounding it.The second one was done a few weeks ago with charcoal, and a few pastels. An experiment really since I have never used dry pastels before. Turns out I shouldn't use them as they aggravate my asthma and I really don't need thatThe third one is a water soluble graphite pencil drawing. It is very simple but I love it.After Neda's terrible experience last week, I have decided to keep my images very small and nothing larger quality than 96dpi. Sorry, but I really don't want to find these images on photobacket for sale. I

A few sketches
2008-05-04 20:07:00
Watercolour on Paper.Today I couldn't really get into painting at all. First we were busy getting things done, and then I just was too tried to start something grand. So I did these 5 thumb-nail sketches. These are more like doodles in colour. Nothing too exciting just wanted to share what I did that's all :) Watercolour on Paper

Garden Corner - Pen sketch
2008-05-04 08:20:00
Spent a few days in Winnipeg last week. Depressing place. We lived there over 4 years ago and I haven't visited since. Nothing had changed. If a city could be going through a clinical depression, this would be the best example of it. Sad and with no hope to rise above mediocracy. Garden Corner, Ink on Paper. Speaking of mediocracy, here is a sketch I did no the plane. Nothing much, just a picture to go with a post :)

Kelowna, West Bank from the Mission Hill WineryPencil and water on Paper 4"x6" I spent a couple of days on business in Kelowna, BC. The area is as beautiful as BC gets! While I didn't have any time to do any painting, I managed to sketch a few pen and pencil works worth sharing. Kelowna, Mission Hill Winery Ink and water on Paper 4"x6" Incidentally, if you follow my sketches, you know I like to wet my ink and usually use water-soluble graphite pencils as well. I didn't have my water-soluble graphites with me. All I had was a golf pencil (the tiny ones used to track scores on the golf course). Guess what? I just discovered that these are the cheapest water-soluble pencils around!!! So much for the expensive Derwents!! I know where to get my next stash!! Kelowna, Looking North Ink and wate

The Rendezvous Spot (take two)
2008-07-13 16:09:00
Slow non-creative weekend. Just couldn't get any real nice pieces out... so far. I did fix The Rendezvous Spot though. The road needed to narrow as it went away and I had been living with it for a week so I am glad to fix it!

7" x 10" Watercolour on paper ©Fawzan Barrage 2008One more for the weekend and I am done. It is so nice to finally have a studio to paint it. This one didn't start off being what you see, but I like it better than what I had first envisioned it to be. I like it when I can insert figures in my paintings. It makes them tell a story and I enjoy that a lot.

Watercolour on Paper 7" x 10" © Fawzan Barrage 2008I got up early this morning with this painting on my mind. It is funny how sleep resolves issues. I had been struggling with this scene in my mind and I didn't want to put brush to paper before I could see it. This morning, I saw it, and I went about it without thought. It just happened. ... Hope you like it too.

Another early Acrylic to post. These will get better over time (I hope). This one was done with a knife without the use of a brush at any stage. Just experimenting with the medium.

Spring Rain
2008-07-04 18:08:00
It has been over 20 years since I last used Oil or Acrylic paint, but now that I have a studio to work in, I am excited to go back and to using them.Admittedly, this is a very tentative start. I have a lot to remember and a lot to explore in these media, but it is so exciting to go back to them.

Yes I am still alive. Yes I am still painting. Better yet, now I have a bo-ni-fied studio to work from and I am re-visiting acrylics and oil soon. But for now, a little 4x6 that I did on a recent trip to Edmonton.

Midnight Sail Watercolor ACEO
2008-07-27 22:53:00
Just a small ACEO to close out the weekend. I call this Midnight Sail. I enjoy doing aceos when I am not up to a full painting. They are usually delightful to paint with accidents almost always making the mark for better or worse. That makes them very organic and loose .I placed this one on Ebay. Frankly ACEOs are the only thing that one should put up on Ebay. They are cheap enough for everyone to

After The Rain - revisited
2008-07-27 11:13:00
My web-friend at Wet Canvas were kind enough to point out the jarring streight line in the foreground. They were right of course and this morning I made some changes to the painting and I believe it is even better. I extended the tree shadows into the grassy area and made some shadow areas in the foreground of the grass as well to spread the darks. Here it is finally done... I believe :) After The

After The Rain

This is the first time in a very long time that I have had the chance to work on a single painting all day. It took my mind off of the fact that my family is away, and I think - if I may say so myself - I did well today. We had a huge thunderstorm and I had to huddle in the car while it passed, but then because of that, the painting changed quit a bit with the break in the clouds and the vivid colo

2008-08-09 19:44:00
This little ACEO took me a few hours to make today. It has been a slow and drizzly day with a dark sky and never ending rain. So I took my time painting this one - small as it is - and enjoyed the lazy atmosphere that it, and nature had in store for me today. I am not satisfied with this one. I have to stop trying to paint these idyllic views they are just to neat for me. Fact is, they have been done so well by others over the centuries that I am not sure I could add anything new to them.Still it was a good exercise! No? If I Had A Boat

This is my first tentative attempt at using web video on my blog so bare with me. The drawing is nothing great. I just had to do something to try this out.

Istanbul - Colour corrected
2008-08-27 17:57:00
I just had to re-photograph this painting. The colours are very subtle and I had to work on it several times in PS to get it right. This time it looks just right on my screen. The yellow is a bit stronger than it shows in the actual painting, but the rest is just right. Istanbul, 12"x9", Acrylic on Canvas board.

Solitary Lookout

This knife painting was a true pleasure to work on. The colours again are not right in the computer image, but somehow I am having a very hard time translating the subtle colours that I am deliciously making to the bits and bites of the computer digital world. Perhaps I will try to rephotograph this one and the one of Istanbul again this week. I really want you to enjoy the paintings as they reall

Poppies and Lake

I am not sure if there is room on eBay for my kind of art in the ACEO category. I see other artists trying to sell similar work, but what seems to be "on fashion" there are fairies, mermaids and unicorns. Perhaps there is another venue for artists who do not wish to go down that path. I am not aware of it. Meanwhile, hope springs eternal. Here is another one I placed on eBay for your review. It is

This one took me about 2 weeks to finish. The photo does not do it justice. The colours are too subtle to capture in a photo, but I tried my best to work in PS to get as close as possible to the real colours.Istanbul, 12"x9", Acrylic on Canvas board.
