It was sculptured by the world-renowned artist Anish Kapoor. The Cloud Gate, installed at the AT&T Plaza, is a highly-polished reflective steel sculpture. “The curved, mirror-like surface of the sculpture provides striking reflections of visitors, the city, and the sky; since its installation, it has probably become the most popular sculpture in the city.” It is made of 168 highly polished stainless steel plates, and stands at 33 feet high, 66 feet long, and 42 feet wide, weighing 110 tons. Falkirk Wheel: Genius Invention
2007-08-23 20:05:46
My attention was lately attracted by this rotated boat lift. The Falkirk Wheel, named after the nearby town of Falkirk in central Scotland, is a rotating boat liftForth. The Wheel is the world’s largest boat lift. It transfers canal boats from one canal to another 100 feet higher. This spectacular centrepiece of the £84.5 million, Millennium Link, is the UK’s largest canal restoration project, developed by British Waterways to reconnect the Union Canal with the Forth & Clyde Canal, re-establishing east to west coast access for boats. The structure is located near the Rough Castle Fort and the closest village is Tamfourhill. Apart from being an engineering and design wonder, The Falkirk Wheel is a great day out. From the stunning Visitor Centre and basin, set at the heart of a natural amphitheatre of landscaped grounds, you can view the revolution of The Wheel or go for a stroll to see it from all angles. I have included a video from YouTube. Check it out! (more&helli

Arts: Casting Tin Soldiers
2007-08-23 00:56:47
I was reading an article about the history of the Forbes magazine. I discovered that the ex-president of the magazine, Malcolm Forbes, had the most extensive collection of toy soldiers. He started his collection in the late 60s and amassed a collection of over 90,000 figures by the time of his death in 1990. A toy soldier is a miniature figurine that represents a soldier. It have appeared in many cultures and eras. Tin soldiers were produced in Germany as early as the 1730s, by molding the metal between two pieces of slate. Those miniature figures of soldiers are extremely popular in the world of collecting. I have selected some pictures below, to show you how you can cast your own Tin Soldier. It’s definitely something I will like to have in my home wall! Maybe not the Nazi soldiers board, but something similar. (more…) If you like this post, buy me a beer.

Arts: Bookbinding
2007-08-19 04:20:14
The Bookbinding is the process of physically assembling a book from a number of folded or unfolded sheets of paper or other material. The Chinese was the first to practice this art with their bamboo book. Can you imagine carrying all those bamboo books and walk all over the China Wall. The Moai in Easter Island
2007-09-09 15:35:02
Did you ever hear about the Moai? They are the giant human figures that you can see in Easter Island . Almost all the statues have a large head that are bigger than the size of their body. People also call them the “living faces” which represent some of the deceased ancestors. The statues were carved by the Polynesian who colonized the island. Many of the statues were rock carvings and was never intended to be completed. Since the Europeans first visited the Island, the movement of the statues was for a long time a mystery. Eleven or more Moai have been removed from the island and transported to locations around the world, in the museums. Ireland: Giant’s Causeway
2007-09-26 19:52:14
I remember when I first saw those rocks, it appeared on the cover of the Led Zeppelin album “Houses of the Holy“. I can’t believe such hexagonal shaped rocks could exist in this world. The Giant’s Causeway is the results of volcanic eruption formed 60 million years ago. Today you can see approximately 40,000 columns of basalt rocks on this land. It’s one of the fourth greatest natural wonders in the United Kingdom. The Causeway become widely known as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ in the 1700s when large numbers of visitors came to view this amazing array of basalt columns. The Causeway came into public ownership in 1963 when it was bought by the National Trust. El Ateneo: Library In A Theatre

If you get the chance to spend some time in Buenos Aires, Argentina. You could visit this well-known bookstore, El Ateneo Grand Splendid. What makes this bookstore so special is the fact that it was installed in a luxury theatre. The theatre was build in 1919 by the empresario Max Glücksman and have a capacity of 1050 seats. Many artists have performed in his new theatre until they converted it into a cinema in 1929 and have presented the first movie ever with sound. By the end of the twenty century, for commercial purposes, the theatre was partially renovated into a book and music shop. The seats were removed but the painted ceiling, ornate carvings, crimson stage curtains, auditorium lighting and many architectural details remained. We can still feel the atmosphere of the grand theatre after all. The bookstore have only a small selection of English books. I guess you are not the kind of customer they are looking for.
