The TeapotThere was a proud Teapot, proud of being made of porcelain, proud of its long spout and its broad handle. It had something in front of it and behind it; the spout was in front, and the handle behind, and that was what it talked about. But it didn't mention its lid, for it was cracked and it was riveted and full of defects, and we don't talk about our defects - other people do that. The cups, the cream pitcher, the sugar bowl - in fact, the whole tea service - thought much more about the defects in the lid and talked more about it than about the sound handle and the distinguished spout. The Teapot knew this."I know them," it told itself. "And I also know my imperfections, and I realize that in that very knowledge is my humility and my modesty. We all have many defects, but then we also have virtues. The cups have a handle, the sugar bowl has a lid, but of course I have both, and one thing more, one thing they can never have; I have a spout, and that makes me the queen of the

Nimrod and teapot!
1970-01-01 00:59:59
RAF Crew Uses Teapot To Plug Gap In Nimrod HatchBritish military officials are especially sensitive to potential safety issues, in the wake of the September loss of a Royal Air Force Nimrod reconnaissance plane in Afghanistan... so many are concerned with the inelegant, but effective, fix another Nimrod crew recently used to block a hatch gap on their plane. The BBC reports the plane's crew used a teapot to plug a hole caused by a malfunctioning hatch cover on a flight from Cornwall to Kinloss."There was a minor malfunction with the hatch cover and the teapot would have been used to make it more comfortable for the crew," an RAF spokeswoman said. "At no time was air crew safety compromised."But the Ministry of Defense -- along with families of the 12 RAF personnel, a Royal Marine, and soldier who died in the September crash -- says the incident raises questions about the Nimrod's safety record... and techniques used to fix problems that may crop up in flight.Full article

Michael Graves
1970-01-01 00:59:59
IT'S not the old toy tin car or the plastic model assembled with glue. This toy, the Playsam Streamliner, is a five-inch painted wooden car that has become as powerful a symbol of Swedish design as a Volvo or an Ant chair. The design of the Streamliner is basic, a geometric nursery rhyme of a body and wheels and nothing more. It has been designated an official Swedish design classic by the Swedish National Museum and Swedish Design Council. Now, the Fitzsu Society, a shop in Los Angeles dedicated to modernist tabletop accessories and other items for the home, has persuaded artists and designers to create variations on the Streamliner. These have been auctioned to support a charity, the World Children's Foundation. For his contribution, Michael Graves mashed up the car with his familiar teapot. The October auction, called FitzsuGrandPrix, raised about $20,000.
