Rabbits 2007-08-28 16:23:00 There is some place near Cesis in Vidzeme where they grow rabbits for multiple purpuses, I don't know exactly which. Well, I don't care really. A year ago, they say that there were lots more than now, you could even step on them. Well, now there are some 30 rabbits jumping around and having fun. There are some of them on the photo.And the place where they are is called Zakisi farm. Find it on the map!
Moving Sea 2007-08-28 00:33:00 Saturday was so dark that I could make photos of moving water even before sunset. In Latvia there are not so many places where you can shoot the sea moving, because most of our beaches are sandy and that makes moving some kind of boring. , the most magnificant palace in Latvia. As many of the Latvian palaces and manors, also this one has been used for unimaginable functions. War hospital, school, warehouse. And finally - a museum. Autumn is coming 2007-08-27 05:40:00 Summer this year has been really terrible. It was some hot days in May, then it was cold June, followed by some summer days in July, then it was August which has changed to autumn. Beach Close-Up 2007-09-26 03:35:00 Stones so big - doesn't look like a beach, but it is! There are place on the Latvian Baltic coast where beaches like this are normal. And with our moderate (sometimes it is called 'cold') climate these stones doesn't get so hot you can't walk on with bare feet. Read more:Beach

The Blackheads House 2007-09-25 01:27:00 Today another tourist photo. The church is St.Peter's Cathedral. You can go up there and see Old Riga from above. Some nice shots can be made from there. I promise, I will go there and after that post some shots. Someday later.The red house is called BlackheadsHouse
. It was destroyed during World War II along with other buildings forming a city municipality square (called Rātslaukums), but in nineties it was rebuild. There are lots of discussions if it was a right decision or not, but the tourists like this place.

Train 2007-09-15 06:47:00 Trains once were something Latvians were proud of. We exported them to many republics of Soviet Union. Now we have the same trains here but they are kind of outdated.Some time ago one Latvian sports store Hawaii Express organized an event to determine which one is faster - train of bycicle. Bycicle won by 45 minutes, the distance was about 100km. Of course much of that was because on poor train tracks, but still - it's just amazing! Read more:Train
Love Padlocks 2007-09-13 15:59:00 This is not very old tradition here, I suppose it has spread here from some foreign news, but - yes, also in Riga just married couples lock their love on the railings of bridges and throw the key away. And sometimes after so many couples the bridge looks anything but architects wanted it to look like.Have fun!

Panorama Wheel 2007-09-09 04:22:00 Sigulda is a top destination in Latvia after its capital Riga. It is often called Latvian Switzerland because of river Gauja valley forming ups and downs in the city and nearby Gauja National Park. Of course, there are no Alps with snow covered peaks, but still - looks good. And if you go up in this panorama wheel, there is a magnificent view over the valley, the city, a castle and a palace.For the Western tourists this thing may be a little scary - old and noisy. In Exile And Behind A Fence 2007-09-08 14:47:00 These ostriches are African native birds but they are farmed in many areas all over the world. Also here in Latvia we have several places where they can be seen. One of the places is near the top tourist destination Sigulda and is called Salmiņi farm.Many other exotic birds and animals can be seen here. And you can buy eggs of these ostriches and also ostrich flesh, because the birds are here not for entertainment but for a festive table! Bon appetit! Read more:Exile
Fishermen Boat 2007-09-07 08:38:00 Fishermen boat on the seashore. Once Latvians were great fishermen, we have many books about fihermen life. No wonder - we live near the Baltic Sea which forms about one third of our border. But now we have destroyed fishing industry. And also many regulations of European Union isn't much help for Latvian fishermen. Let's see what will be left after 10 years...

Daugava river 2007-09-04 16:31:00 In this photo you can see river Daugava as it looks after they built Riga hydropower plant in 1975. It looks like a big lake, very calm, doesn't remind much of a river. Anyway - they couldn't destroy a beautiful sunset here!
Daugavgriva Lighthouse 2007-09-04 01:07:00 Daugavgriva Lighthouse
is on the left bank of river Daugava where it flows into the Baltic Sea. This exact lighthouse you are looking at, was built in 1957, after the one destroyed by the Nazi German troops in 1944.Near the lighthouse there are several more attractions. For example, you can lay on a much less crowded sandy beach or swim, watching ships going in or out of the Riga Port. Or you can walk in the nearby Piejuras (Seaside) nature park.

I was driving through the forest, then past some nice country houses, and then I saw this wooden house which definately has been a nice place some time ago, but now it is as you can see it on this photo. This photo is from Sarkandaugava (district of capital Riga) which has some remarkable places, including Latvian biggest brewery Aldaris. This, of course, is something different - the church with a nice small park and kids playground. I spent part of my childhood here.
