Sony Alpha 700 Digital SLR test 2007-10-27 02:27:00 ALPHA MALE? At last Sony
has two DSLR cameras, but is the Alpha
700 good enough to convince photographers to switch their allegiance? Angela Nicholson finds outAs the first camera to be launched after the Sony takeover of Konica Minolta, the Sony Alpha 100 arrived under a heavy weight of expectation. Sony had already made it clear that as well as satisfying the requirements of existing Dynax system users, it aimed to win new customers and woo photographers away from other manufacturers. It aims to take the number two slot in DSLR sales and achieve a 25% share of the market. Although it was supported by a collection of compatible accessories, the Alpha 100 was the sole representative of Sony's DSLR market ambitions. Many enthusiast photographers like to invest in a camera that sits within a range, so this was a bit of a handicap. Having a series of cameras underlines a manufacturer's commitment to a system, and it means there are second-body or upgrade options available. Sony has trie Read more:Digital

Pentax to Delay Camera Launch after Supplier Fire 2007-10-25 20:51:00 TOKYO (Reuters) - Pentax
Corp said it would delay the launch of its new digital camera after a fire at a lithium-ion battery plant run by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd's battery unit caused supply disruption.Production at Matsushita Battery Industrial's flagship factory in western Japan has been halted since a September 30 fire and it is unclear when it will be able to resume operations—a potential boost to rival battery makers including Sanyo Electric Co Ltd and Sony Corp.Pentax planned to use a certain type of lithium-ion battery from Matsushita for its new digital camera, but the fire and ensuing production halt have made procurement difficult, forcing it to postpone the launch to February 2008 from November.Matsushita's battery business was already hit hard in August when Nokia warned consumers that 46 million batteries made by Matsushita used in its mobile phones could overheat, and offered to replace them for free.Matsushita said on Wednesday it plans to boost output Read more:Delay

Shots in the Dark 2007-10-25 19:41:00 A trio of new DSLRs kill static to take crisper photos in low lightTRENDMore digital cameras now use CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors to capture sharper images in dim lighting, with less "pixel noise"—colored flecks that occur at high light-sensitivity settings when the camera's processor tries to boost the brightness in a dark image.REASONSLRs have large sensors that absorb more light than those in point-and-shoots. CMOS is handy at these sizes because it consumes less power than the charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors in earlier models. And CMOS sensors fit noise-reduction circuitry right on the chip.BENEFITAt dawn or dusk, you can photograph outdoor vistas too big for a camera flash to illuminate. Top Gear for Photo Enthusiasts 2007-10-25 19:26:00 So what if you're not paid for your photography? With the right software and hardware you can still make your photos look like a million bucks. But where do you start? Buying professional-grade gear isn't cheap, so you'll want to make sure you invest your cash wisely. It all starts with picking the right camera. Point-and-shoot cameras are good for taking snapshots on vacation or family events, but serious photographers will need to step up to a digital SLR. SLRs, or single lens reflex cameras, direct light toward the viewfinder as you compose a photo, letting you view a crisp optical image while framing, focusing, and snapping the picture. Since you're looking at the actual reflected light and not an LCD approximation, you see a brighter and sharper image, making composition easier. SLRs also tend to have more expensive lenses that produce sharper pictures with better color contrast than point-and-shoot cameras. In the past, buying a D-SLR meant shelling out $5,000 or more—out of Read more:Photo

Hoya Q2 profit down on memory disks, LCD equipment 2007-10-29 23:15:00 TOKYO, Oct 29 - Hoya Corp posted a 4.5 percent fall in quarterly operating profit
, hit by sluggish sales of liquid crystal display-making equipment and a delay in the production of advanced glass disks used in hard disk drives. Hoya, which acquired digital camera and medical equipment maker Pentax Corp earlier this year, benefited from brisk sales of optical lenses for digital cameras and higher sales of glass used in the production of semiconductors. But a delay in the production of hard disks with a so-called "perpendicular recording method" weighed on its quarterly earnings, while price competition hurt sales of glass used to make LCDs.Operating profit at Hoya, which competes with Konica Minolta Holdings Inc in the hard disk substrate business, came to 26.85 billion yen in July-September, compared with a 28.13 billion yen profit a year earlier. The result is roughly in line with Hoya's forecast for 26.36 billion yen. Merrill Lynch had estimated 26.5 billion yen.Net profit slid 8.2 pe
Sony A700 review - letsgodigital 2007-10-29 23:00:00 Sony A700 review
: Finally Sony are making good their promise to bring a real Alpha system on the market that not only appeals to the amateur but the semi-pro and even the professional photographer alike with the introduction of the Sony Alpha 700. I do not wish to claim the Sony A700 to be the ultimate tool for professionals. These photographers most possibly use a DSLR of the same brand they already own as a second camera. However; a start has been made. Many people were eagerly awaiting the Sony DSLR-A700. During the presentation of the Sony Alpha A700 in Italy, I was able to work briefly with Sony's new addition. Thereafter Sony gave us the opportunity to make an in-depth review about the Sony A700, read our experiences with this DSLR camera in the following review.Dennis Hissinkmore : letsgodigital Read more:Sony

dust spots are much more obvious at small apertures, and against clean areas such as a sky. In images shot with medium apertures they are larger and lighter gray. With wide enough apertures many may not show at all. They are also less obvious in very bright or very dark areas. Here is a portion of a sky shot with a dirty sensor. more : adorama
Manfrotto 190X Pro-B Tripod & 804RC2 Head: Review 2007-10-29 22:43:00 Manfrotto make good professional tripods at affordable prices - the 190X Pro-B being no exception.190X SeriesReplacing the 190 series in the UK, the Manfrotto 190X Pro-B aluminium tripod comes in at a svelte 1.8kgs, but is capable of holding up to 5kgs. This means the vast majority of DSLR and lens combos will sit snugly on top - even pro bodies with batteries and fat f/2.8 70-200mm zooms will make the grade. Its not only light, but compact too, measuring just 57cms when closed, and extending to 146cm maximum. Plus it's good value... so it's not going to break the bank nor the back.On LocationWithout the availability of wind tunnels or research labs in the ThinkCamera offices, it was to the fields to test: Wind and water? No problem! Those aluminium legs are designed to be light and strong, the quick release latches easy to handle; essentially you could throw this off the top of a house and it'd still be in one piece (don't try this at home, kids).Hardened photo-backpackers may know Read more:Tripod

Olympus E-3 DSLR Preview Part II 2007-11-05 22:16:00 Earlier in October we attended the Olympus
E-3 digital SLR introduction party in New York City. A few days later I had a more detailed tech briefing on the new E-3 at the PhotoPlus Expo tradeshow. I met with Sally Smith Clemens and Toshiyuki Terada, Manager of DSLR Planning from Olympus Tokyo. At the meeting I got to see some of the guts of the E-3, including the image-stabilized Live MOS sensor assembly, the new auto focus drive system, and the specially formed magnesium camera chassis.Improved Image StabilizationThe E-3 shares the same basic sensor-shift image stabilization system that the E-510 uses. However, Olympus has increased the sensitivity of the gyro motion sensor that detects camera movement. The E-510 was supposed to be able to compensate for up to three stops of movement. Olympus is claiming that the new E-3 DSLR can successfully shoot up to four or even five shutter speeds slower. We shot a little video of the mechanism to show you how it works. Notice how the imaging s Read more:Preview
