Fine-Tuning Exposure with a Digital Camera's Metering System 2007-10-18 14:21:00 Your camera's exposure metering system is a tireless friend that keeps plugging away, calculating its reckoning of the correct exposure (based on parameters you set) regardless of whether you choose to pay attention or not. It's available whether you're setting exposure manually or using one of the programmed or priority modes. You can't really turn off the exposure meter completely when the camera is on - although it might go to sleep after a few seconds of inactivity. Even then, as soon as you tap the shutter release button, a sleeping meter wakes up, looks at the current view through the lens, and reports its findings. How does metering work? The reason dSLR (digital single lens reflex) exposure meters are so accurate is that they interpret the actual light passing through the lens, which is flipped upward by the mirror toward the viewfinder (or sideways in the case of cameras like those in the Olympus E series). Some of the light is used for viewing, and some is used to measure t Read more:Digital

Pentax beats the shakes 2007-10-24 13:18:00 WHEN I first studied photography at school in the late 1970s the SLR camera of choice was the Pentax
K1000, a robust manual workhorse that sold for a reasonable price.Thirty years later Pentax is aiming for the same serious-amateur market with the 6.1-megapixel K100D Super digital SLR.Like the K1000, it is quite robust, has manual controls -- though it also has all the auto options you'd expect on a modern digital camera -- and is reasonably priced.Pentax SLRs have lost a lot of ground over the years to Canon and Nikon, so the price has to be good. At retail, you can expect to get the body for about $650.This is much more affordable than the nearest Canon model, the 8.2-megapixel EOS 30D, that sells for about $1400.But apples for apples, it's up against the 6.1-megapixel Nikon D40, priced at about $750.Dave Bullardmore : news
In the Aisles at PhotoPlus 2007 2007-10-24 13:09:00 When covering a show as big (and noisy) as last week's PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, it's easy to overlook some of the lower-key products tucked away in the various corners of the show floor. To be sure, the gear that grabbed the most attention at PhotoPlus 2007 was at the front of the hall where Nikon's new flagship digital SLR, the D3, and Canon's new top-of-the-line DSLR, the EOS 1Ds Mark III, were making their debuts. One of the biggest stories of the show was, undoubtedly, whether the Nikon or the Canon booth – which were located directly next to each other – was drawing more foot traffic.Dan Havlikmore : pdnonline

Depth of field: The small-sensor difference 2007-10-24 13:00:00 Having struggled on many occasions to explain the difference
between cameras sensors the size of a full frame of 35mm film and the vastly more common smaller sensors, I thought I'd point readers toward this lucid explanation of one aspect by Canon tech guru Chuck Westfall in his October column with the Digital Journalist. One reason you might want to pay attention: the vast majority of digital SLRs use smaller sensors than film SLRs, though Canon and Nikon have some high-end exceptions.Westfall details in his article how depth of field changes in relation to sensor size. I'm drawing attention to the issue as an excuse to explain why a common practice in the camera business raises my hackles. Stephen Shanklandmore : news Read more:Depth
Hasselblad deep-sixing H2 hybrid camera 2007-10-23 14:25:00 Hasselblad, a manufacturer of high-end medium-format cameras, is dropping its H2 product line, a move that spotlights the company's transition from film camera roots to its digital future. The H2 can record images on either film or a digital sensor, but there wasn't sufficient demand for the product, so the company is devoting more resources to its more popular digital-only H3D family, Hasselblad Chief Executive Christian Poulsen said in an announcement to customers Monday. PhotoPlus 2007: A Great Time to Be A Photographer 2007-10-23 14:15:00 I spent Friday at the PhotoPlus 2007 show in New York, seeing all sorts of new photographic equipment and running into old friends. I was impressed as always by the many photographic tools, but also by the increasing competition in the Digital SLR market, and how good so many smaller cameras and camcorders are getting. (Of course, being silly, I left my own camera back at my office, so Gearlog's Carol Mangis took a picture of the show with me and Terry Sullivan, who used to do camera reviews for PC Magazine and is now with Consumer Reports. The Business of Photography 2007-10-23 14:04:00 “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” -Andy WarholWhat is a professional photographer?Back in the day (under a decade ago), I wandered into a local “pro” lab that had a front counter for retail and a dedicated side room for pros only. Of course I went to the pro-counter and I asked a bunch of questions about E-6 temperature control and turn-around times. The guy looked me up and down and politely asked if I was a pro. “Uh-huh,” I replied. Then he asked if I was a full-time, earn-all-my-income-from-photography pro. I thought about it for a split second and said, “Yup.” It was the truth, but there has always been a part of me that is uneasy with the fact that sometimes the phone doesn’t ring. Sometimes the phone doesn’t ring for a long time. And, once an eon or so, it rings a lot.Laurence ChenFor more information : photographyreview Read more:Business
